Thanks so much. Beats regular CWM by miles, not complaining about CWM but swapping back to it I have missed TWRP, this fills those voids.

It is, however the nice thing about this recovery is that it is customizable. Go into "PhilZ Settings" -> "GUI Preferences" the tap on "Menu Height" until the menu suits your needs. Personally i set it at 72

TWRP is a very good recovery, stock cwm too. My recovery was greatly inspired from twrp to whom I give credits in my sources/thread.
However, i really do not care about your personal tastes, nor do readers probably. If you have no contributing dev posts, no need to add them here. It is the developer topic
You can open a recovery discussion on your tastes in General section.
I monitor above 70 threads to give support. So, if everyone posts what ever he likes just to talk, I keep wasting my time refreshing threads just to read useless comments.

Just a question... what does this recovery do that twrp doesn't? Why would I want to use this recovery?

This recovery is cwm based but with twrp elements like customizability.... I find twrp often unreliable and often instillations made by twrp are often not the same quality as cwm.... Also it fails to migrate sdcard between 4.1 and 4.2+.... This for all I know doesn't have these problems

What? ??
By the way most users like options. If you don't then stick with cwm and stop trying to discourage further development for the note. This is a development website (xda developers) the purpose of this site is for developers to share work and users are free to try it. Now I'm happy with TWRP, but another option is great and I'll probably give this a shot soon but others didn't like the options or want to try something new now

Huh? Was this thread moved recently? Because I thought it was in the developer's section.
I have been toying with Kit Kat, so I had to leave TWRP for non-touch CWM to get it to function (a known issue). If I'm not mistaken, I've flashed both 4.4 and Touchwiz 4.3 with this recovery with no issues - and I still get to have touch. I appreciate the work, philz!

I tried to search a little bit for this and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I'm new to flashing ROMS (just flashed my first one yesterday - blazer 3.7) and I am wondering what the correct procedure for flashing a new ROM would be.
Blazer 3.8 is coming out soon so that would be what I would flash to (if it makes any difference since they are both blazer). If there is a difference, what would it be? Thanks in advance for any help.

Flaming aside and lesson learned and research done.
Flashing from 1 Rom to New different Rom:
1. Hold power button + Volume up (until you get to recovery)
2. Backup your setting (NAND)
3. Wipe Dalvic, Wipe Cache, Reset to factory setting
And or flash Calkulin's_Format_All_For_E4GT.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
Direct link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=771828&d=1320435068
4. Install zip from (sd or wherever you have it saved)
5. Reboot (first reboot could take up to 5mins before your running)
Note: If your updating same to the same Rom, read OP (original post) and most of the time you don't have to do factory reset (meaning you don't have to reinstall all your apps again)
Gokd luck
Thanks for the tips. If I have apps on my sd card will they be deleted as well?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Factory reset will delete all your apps/photos etc... Backup specially your photos etc.. Apps you can always reinstall. You have to either manually reinstall everything (which is what I do) OR use back up and restore apps like Titanium Back etc...
As fun as flashing is, you will probably run into problems at first... Use Q& A section or do NAND restore (very important to have)

No, they won't, all apps on internal/external sd are safe. Just wipe /cache & /dalvik cache when upgrading same ROM. Add /system to that for moving between ROMs ... now you had better git before the flames begin again!

There are many apps, system themes, tools and tweaks you can't use unless rooted.
I know Android is highly customizable out of the box, but rooting opens the door and gives you even more control of your device.
Certain apps such a Vibrafix (haptic feedback disabler), AdAway(amazing ad blocker app that uses the same hosts file I have used on my PC for years), Inverted Gapps, and loads of great system maintenance tools that require root, etc, etc.
Welcome to the lovely world of root. I mainly root my phones to out new ROMS on. But they become to damn addictive so be careful lol. Now I just use root to take off all bloatware and ads custom kernels.... Have fun and yes read read read and read again. Before trying anything

Keep back-up of a good, working, configuration, and stick with your S3 variant. The same goes for flashing flashable zips - stick to the ROM you've chosen to flash (obviously this can vary with mods for any AOSP ROM, etc.).
General rule of thumb. I just rooted and flashed Slim Bean on my girlfriends S3, so I'm new to the S3 community too. Hoping I can find a solid AOSP build to flash on her phone.
Thread moved to Q&A.
@ OP, Do you see a general sense of the responses you're are getting? Reading, Reading, Reading is key. All of your questions are fundamental Android questions. You need to look into recoveries, root apps, different ROMs/Kernels - all of which can be found with a simple XDA or Google Search.
And please do not open and thread about, "Which ROM is the best?" or "What is your favorite ROM/Kernel combo?". Best advice I can give is to read a few OPs in the Dev section and if you find one that you like, check out the last 10 pages or so for bugs. Narrow it down to one that you want, then start reading.

Bingo.
Like yourself, I am new to the rom flashing scene. Once I get my phone set up exactly how I want it, I do a Nandroid.
After that, I do a standard backup at least ocne a week of my apps and their data.
Alot of backup apps will provide the ability to merge backups. This is a great feature because I could uninstall an app today that I like for some reason, and a few days from here when I do my next app backup, instead of having to reinstall it before the backup, it's already carried forward in the merged backup.
Just do your research before you flash ANYTHING!!!!!!. Any terms that you dont understand, just google. This is an awesome site, almost everything is already covered. Welcome to the darkside......or something.
I tried to install latest illusion and liquid JB 2.4 but dont like them, internet doesnt work on liquid jb and there is also no market app on either one, not sure if its the ROMS or my installation.
Now can any one plese help me to find the rom that has best features (good bettery life could be a bonus).
thanks in advance.
Your install process is way off. There are support threads and q&a's and instructions in the OP of the thread... No such thing as a "coolest rom" try them for your self with proper install procedures before saying they're ugly or don't work.
T-Mobile SGS III
Coolest ROM?
That made me laugh.
You need to go through and pick which ROM or ROMs fit your needs. No one can pick a ROM for you, another members ideal ROM may not be your ideal ROM.
As for the installation process and having certain apps not being there or not working properly, you need to read the first post of the thread, also know as the OP. Reading it will let you know what to download and how to install/flash it through recovery.
Here's some advice that will save you in the future:
-read the first post/op of each thread
-have questions or problems with the ROM? Read the first and last 10 pages of the thread, if the problem isn't addressed or your question isn't answered, then politely ask for help.
-Google is your "friend", usually typing your issue followed by xda in the search bar and you'll find what your looking for

To update official software, you need to be on stock software, unrooted, with stock recovery What version of Jelly Bean is your CleanBean ROM based on?DO NOT take any updates while rooted or on custom ROMs.
Yeah don't ever take official OTAs while rooted/on a different rom other than stock. Hell i never even take an ota for the rom that I'm on, i always do things myself to ensure everything works right. Your build.prop needs to be updated to trick the OTA update, check the developer's thread to see if he posted one for you to flash

I wouldn't be too afraid. Just be as careful as you can be. I believe editing the build.prop is pretty harmless so long as you keep a copy of the original somewhere. You should do it yourself! You'll feel awesome knowing you took another step and got your hands a little dirtier and have 1 less thing to have to depend on someone else for

Well we don't have to warry about that any more since my phone crashed and I forgot to backup that ROM so I'm back on cm11, but no one else had a thread answering this question so I hope it helps others.
Hi guys, I was looking at rooting my phone. However there are some issues I have with it that hopefully you guys can rectify.
How can I update?
What is the most popular rom?
Is it worth rooting?
My main reason for rooting is getting rid of the bloatware from samsung and optus on my phone. I also want to customize Nova launcher with icon themes but I can do that without a root. What other things can I do with my phone with a root?
Is rooting hard? And how do I backup my phone before I do it? Searching around on here I came across an app called Titanium Backup but you have to be rooted to backup with that?
There is so many more questions I want to ask, but I will leave it at this for now.
Thank you!

This is not your phones tech support desk and nobody here owes you an answer so when you create a topic be patient. Also not putting "help me please" as topic title would help, just be precise and descriptive about what topic is about.
To answer questions..
1. You flash rom through custom recovery.
2. There is no such thing as a "best" rom and asking this question is against rules.
3. Yes.
I would highly recommend you do some reading/research.

However yes I agree, I was excited by the prospect of rooting my new phone.
This is not your phones tech support desk and nobody here owes you an answer so when you create a topic be patient.

I know no one here owes me an answer, just because you have a lot of posts does not allow you to make the rules around here. I contribute to these forums as well, I was just hoping for some friendly help.
Obviously someone didn't get any of their mum last night
Also not putting "help me please" as topic title would help, just be precise and descriptive about what topic is about.

Changed.
1. You flash rom through custom recovery.
2. There is no such thing as a "best" rom and asking this question is against rules.
3. Yes.

1) I can do this through Odin correct?
2) Ok, what is the most popular rom?
3) Ok.
Should I change my kernel to a different one than stock? My friends said it helps performance and battery life, but I don't know how stable they are. Could someone suggest a good one?
Last time I rooted my old phone I did a bad job of it, I lost all my stuff and I don't want it to happen this time.
If I buy Titanium Backup could this prevent this? I want to be able to update the ROM how can I do this, and what rom would you suggest in this case?
Thank you.

Whihc is why we have so many duplicate topics because newbies do not bother to search/read and instead prefer to be spoon fed.

And at what point did I remotely say anything about me making the rules?
I was simply informing you of the rules that XDA HAS!
You are not allowed to bump posts after a short period of time!

2) What is best/most popular types of questions are not allowed on XDA. Try some and find out for yourself.

Then make a backup first. You probably wiped data via recovery or something.

I already answered this earlier, please try and read.
Some ROM's like Cyanogenmod for example have inbuilt rom downloaders which will enable you to download next version and then flash it automatically.
However process is same, simply download new rom, reboot into rescue and then flash next version. No wipe is needed if its same base/version. You only need to wipe if going to new rom/base etc. Wipe will only wipe data partition on internal, your external is untouched.

Managed to root my stock rom.
If anyone is interested in doing this see the sticky in the n7105 thread the guy shows you how to install a custom recovery and install supersu 2.0 through that.
It is also great to try different roms, you can backup and install multiple roms to your liking.
