Any lawyers use this tablet? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Random question, I know, but I'm a third-year law student, soon to be lawyer, and am contemplating the purchase of this tablet. I thought I'd just throw this question out there to see if now or in the future any lawyers or law students use this tablet, and whether they find this tablet productive for their work. Aside from personal entertainment use, I would like to use the tablet as a more easily accessible version of my laptop. Ideally I'd use it to highlight PDF documents, conduct some research, respond to emails, etc.
Thanks!

strange how you wound up here with that question lol
the stylus is nice and it's a high end device, name brand, unlocked bootloader... I only have one complaint. the back is kind of slick making it slide easy

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer.
This is a great device for email (I use for gmail and corporate email), note taking, pdf annotation, research.

Hah yea. I've been on these forums awhile, mostly for rooting my phones and tablets and loading an occasional custom ROM. Just thought I'd throw that question out there.

Thanks! Most reviews, etc online demonstrate game playing and occasional notetaking, so I was curious how it did for actual work lol.

The Note should be perfect for the job, it's exactly this sort of work it's designed for. I'm not a lawyer, nut the Note has almost completely replaced my laptop, having something compact with a battery life that lasts a whole working day & beyond is so much more convenient.
If you're using it for client data or other confidential/sensitive information, make sure you're appropriately covered on the security front should you lose / misplace the device.
As for software recommendations: I use EZpdf, Aquamail and Office Suite amongst others.

I'm an astronaut and I found the s-pen and this tablet are much better in space than the old ball point pen and paper. That s-pen just never seems to run out of ink... Until the battery goes flat.
But seriously, as an Engineer there is no way this is a laptop replacement. Yes the screen is nice, the battery reasonable, Touchdown is close on having the features of Outlook (but not quite), note taking is OK (well the best digital way I've found for meetings but not perfect), editing office documents it doesn't really do so well in with multiple office packages (viewing is OK though), and any other software I use on my laptop/PC well it falls short there.
I have a windows 8 tablet/convertable which is definitely a replacement for the laptop but keep a desktop for more serious work. But the windows 8 tablet sucks as a tablet compared to the note for QUICK viewing of things like documents, emails and researching on the internet which you have listed.

Help me when my arguments againts the iphone please!

Hey guys.
Strange post perhaps, but Iv always loved my HTC Devices.
So tomorrow my Touch Pro 2 will arrive, when I told my friends this and showed them the pictures. They laughed and said I was just fighting against getting an Iphone.
I believe I have made an informed decision, mostly because I can choose what hardware I want, (in this case a proper keyboard and bigger screen). And also because I can use so many free apps for WM6.1 that the iphone users have to pay for.
So please can you give me some more ammunition so that I can stop losing the arguments about why the iphone fails. Cheers.
Find new friends with better taste in phones?
You cant really use the bigger screen size argument. Just a beautiful input device and ability to customize it to the hilt.
Well there's always the 1 step behind the times arguement...I mean Iphones aren't as hi-tech as many of HTC's phones...oh...and you can change your batteries or add memory with cards...

You are getting confused with almost any manufacturer apart from HTC.
Iphones can't multitask, not even the new ones.
The screen isn't as "responsive" as the iphone, but you can use a stylus for precision (like making a doodle with the stylus ) and if you live in a cold climate, you can wear gloves and still use your phone. With capacitive screens like the iphone you gave to take your gloves off. Really annoying if you use them.
You don't have to jailbreak it to get many of the things working. And supposedly flash is coming to Windows Mobile first if I remember correctly (by first I mean before the iphone).
You can use it with any network you want (if it's unlocked) and if it's a branded version, you can unlock it without fear of bricking it after an upgrade.
That's just what comes to mind.
Oh, the screen is .1 inches bigger. Not really enough to make an arguement. But it does have more than twice the resolution, which is a goodo point as images can be clearer and reading texts won't tire your eyes as much.

Because I constantly seek validation and enjoy being right? Im not an armchair psychologist.
I can't stand the smugness of the iphone user trying to shove the latest nose flute app in my face, "do you have Excel?" I ask.
"Yes" replies the iphone user as they connect to the apps store and pay £15 for the most essential of software on a business phone.
I think my biggest reason for liking the touch pro 2 is that it just looks stunning with the screen on. Everyone has seen the iphone now, and I like to be different.
Cheers for the replies guys.
Yes, there are just too many iPhones on the street - no "WOW" factor these days. I find the pro2 can turn quite a few heads, especially when I pull out the keyboard and start typing... mind you, someone asked me once where I bought my iPhone with a keyboard!!

The IPhone is too common. It also means you surrender too much rights to Apple. They control what you should use. They ignore you and work at their decided schedule. "Cut and paste" is a new feature -- only idiots will believe that.
"There is no vulnerability." -- between Iphone 3G and 3GS, Apple plugged 48 holes.
The battery overheats fast. The screen wears out fast. The material used to maufacture the IPhone is cheap stuff.
IPhone is totally hopeless without connectivity. At the least, TP2 can still be useful.
The famous Appstore! -- How many apps do you really use? Many of the apps are "fractured" because Apple does not allow the developers to add in some features for fear of opening up their closed ecology.
You need more?
Agree with above that the App Store is overrated. I have an iPod Touch, and I have about 2 or 3 useful 3rd party apps. Everything else are just time wasters.
I have a couple reasons why I wouldn't buy an fruitphone.
1. Useless homescreen. The lockscreen shows the date/time. Once unlocked, you just have grids of icons. You have counters that show number of new messages, but no previews. Notifications of new messages and appointments really suck.
2. Terrible multi tasking. Let's say I was wasting my time with a game on my fruitphone while listening to music. You can forward or rewind tracks by double pressing the one button to bring up the music controls. But you can't go into the music app to change your music and go back to the game! That's just dumb.
3. Internet browsing. You can't open links in new tabs! No text reflow. That means you have to use landscape mode if you want to zoom in to read the text and you don't want to scroll horizontally. Also, no full screen view in browser. You always have the top/bottom bars.
4. Low resolution display. Text can't easily be read in zoomed out web pages. Photos look terribly pixelated.

Why do you have sheeps as friends...
People have posted some really good points on this thread like TP2 can
- multitask apps
- a monster text machine
- a monster email machine
- a full keyboard
- two mics with noise cancelling abilities
- two speakers for better loudspeaker calls
- better wvga screen (better resolution screen)
- Touch flow 3d is so so smooth(people friendly)
- excellent notifications screen
- better calling options
- better word processor apps like power point, word, excel
- a crap crap crap load of more software for Wndows mobile than iphone will ever have
-the device looks better IMO
But you cant really fault the iphone that much. It is a very pretty with better processor, same ram, bigger onboard harddrive, 3.5mm jack. The OS for both devices are totally different. But in all honesty WM is better than iphone OS BUT Android is better than WM and IS the future of the mobile phone generation....FYI
I agree with the above post. Check out the N900 phone too, its OS is a pseudo linux desktop and its mobile front is very finger friendly looking at youtube.
I am looking at the TP2 myself despite having an iphone. The iphone isn't a very good organizer partly because of its notification/background app. problem, I still haven't got used to the soft keyboard on a 3.5'' device after a year of use - hinders alot of communication and productivity for me personally, the resolution of the screen affects my PDF reading and the lack of bluetooth signalling stops me adding mice/keyboards.
This forum also offers a lot of ROM's too. Although there is a lot to be said for the iphone (its best software comes supplied and the rest can easily be downloaded from the appstore/cydia mostly for free or next to nothing) and no doubt I will have to encounter the same annoyances i had with my touch diamond/kaiser back in Winmo land. I have no doubt for most leisure users who have mastered the soft iphone keyboard that its probably the most fun and beneficial phone for them though.

yes, who could forget about a good ol' fashioned IPhone bashing thread.
you shouldn't let others opinions have an effect on what you want. different strokes for different folks. it's not like either the Tp2 or the IPhone are bad phones.
yes, you can make fun of them for not having the ability to multitask, not being able to sideload applications, interchangeable batteries etc.
just remember it's not wise to throw stones from a glass house.
just ask your friend to change something on your phone, then you do it...tell them to type something, then you type it, ask them what ap they have, then you go get it for free...I do it ALL DAY to my friends that have it, they hate pulling their iphones out now lol. The best is "can you tether? Yeah! For free? AH!!! YOUR PHONE IS CRAP! lol HTC wins. BUT............the iPhone does kill every other device in UI processing, hands down which IMO is a HUGE player in satisfaction. If you can do with 10-30fps UI, HTC with TF3D would be the better choice.
a huge issue for me was free internet tethering. I think with the new 3GS you can do this - but it costs an EXTRA £14.95 per month to O2 for the lowest deal! What a ripoff. That and the pull out keyboard are prob the main things for me.
There's an article at MSN that may be helpful....
Also, the Iphone loudspeaker is so-so despite calling itself a media machine.
The resolution is horrid.
The sound from the headphone is soft.
Voice command from BT definitely not working.
How do I know all these, I own a Iphone 3GS. Why don't I get rid of it? Too ashame to sell it to someone and have him curse me for selling him a lemon (despite it namesake).

Touch Pro 2 vs. Blackberry

I am basically a new user to windows mobile. I previously had a blackberry 8900 but decided to switch to the touch pro 2 because of all the great reviews that I heard about it. So far I like the phone but i am not to thrilled about it at all. The browser is excellent as well as the screen but the phone seems to lag in many different areas. For whatever reason the phone seems to lag a lot and would get stuck on certain screens. The e-mail doesn't seem to come as quickly as my blackberry did;the facebook application actually was better at synching contacts and who refresh by itself on my blackberry; Also i keep getting these phantom messages that are basically just accumulating. Even after a hard reset the problem is still occurring. The only real problem that I had with my 8900 was the battery on it wasn't the greatest. I guess the purpose of this post is to really ask in your opinion why do you like this phone over other devices because maybe it does a lot a great things that I just don't know about. Thanks to all who partake in this topic.

What he meant was that the 8900 is more like the Dash 3G and isn't really in the same category as the Touch Pro2.
As for the lag, I really don't see it with mine. It really depends on how much you have running in the background, I guess. If it (the lag) is too much, you can always try flashing to one of the new WM6.5 ROMs.
My Exchange email makes it to my phone faster than it does my Outlook client on my computer.
The keyboard is immeasurably much better than anything on a Blackberry. I can't type accurately on a Blackberry because the size of my fingertips is considerably greater than the size of a key, so it's physically impossible for me to press one key at a time.
The screen is much larger (and I think higher-res) than a Blackberry. This is a big advantage if you want to play video clips, and makes web-browsing much more pleasant too - the high resolution is great for making small text legible. It's also good for some games.
The call quality is superb - loud, and clear, which is especially important for me because I'm partially deaf. I like the noise-cancelling and the lay-the-phone-face-down-to-switch-to-speaker features.
I like how tweakable it is, and I like the huge range of downloadable software.
I don't experience any lag with emails. Email from my work Exchange server gets pushed directly onto the phone almost instantly. Mail from my ISP is polled every 5 minutes, so there's not much of a delay. I don't get any phantom messages either. I don't use facebook, so I can't comment on that.
I think you may have some problems with your setup - perhaps even a faulty phone...?

It is a possibility it is the phone. Also as far as the call quality. The speaker phone isd beautiful but as far as the handset it sounds muffled and not as clear as my 8900. I don't like altering softwares to get something to work especially if something cost so much it should work perfectly right out the box. I will see what happens after I exchange this thing

you are entitled to your opinion but for the last year and a half i havent had any problems with the blackberry devices. It has done ever job that I needed it to do quickly and efficiently. That's certainly not been my experience - I find it very clear indeed. (The speaker phone isn't nearly as clear as the earpiece on mine, and doesn't go quite loud enough for my damaged hearing). Do you have the T-Mobile version of the phone? There have been a lot of complaints about the call quality on them - they seem to use different audio parameters from the stock version. (But this can potentially be fixed).

It's not just about tweaking the way things work, it's about adding entirely new capabilities that you didn't necessarily know you needed at the time you bought it. The TP2 is flexible in the same sort of way as an iPhone or even a desktop PC - it does all sorts of things.
You can't really compare the TP2 and the Blackberry. Two different things. Just flash a new rom and your problem is solved.
The muffled sound on T-mo versions is a recognized problem. There is a fix which only requires copying a file to replace another one. It is even available in cab format. You might want to try it as it does not require flashing or hacking. The rest, well, you've already gotten pertinent replies so there's no need for me to repeat them or be redundant. Good luck.

I am like you that came from a BB 8320 to the touch pro 2 which I waited 5 long months for. First, let me say that these phone comparisons are apples to oranges. I have been an avid BB user for 3 years starting with the pearl.
You are used to the speed at which the BB service pushes the emails, and the functionality of the BB. BTW, you can set the the time interval for your TP2 to check your mail boxes. I use the internet like crazy all day long, the BB is no comparison with this, TP2 hands down. The email, thats a different story but the TP2 is not far behind, like the BB I get my emails pretty fast. MYspace and Facebook I can not comment on since I do not like those sites.
I have similar issues with the lag but I will live with them. For the same reason I did not get the iphone; what is coming down the line for WM with 6.5 soon for the TP2 as an HTC upgrade and the cooked roms via Hardspl, the BB is no comparison.
My last WM phone was a motorola mdx-220 I believe, I still have it and I hacked the hell out of it!
Just give it some time, you will have to get used to a new platform like I am. Touchflo is good but it still has issues. Just wait for the upgades to come along or go back to the BB. BB has its issues too, especially with that 4.5v firm wear which constantly would crash my phone in the middle of a business call to reset. That used to piss me off!

If you like things to work straight out of the box buying this phone was a bad idea. Out of the box its a brilliant phone but somewhat sluggish. You really need to Flash HardSPL http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550131 then take a look at some of the ROMs, I'd reccomend EnergyROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547794 or Miri's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552643 or if you like WM6.1 like me, BXsteez's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550991
Enoy the tweaking, its the reason i buy WinMo.
BB push mail
I think the mail on BB is the fastest because the BlackBerry does Push Email...
I run both an 8900 and a TP2. I totally understand what you mean about the lag. I am fortunate to have access to all sorts of mobile devices but the Blackberry (for me) just works the best. Simple things like auto correction when you are typing. Easy capitalisation and a load of other features I now can't do without. I also think WinMo is crying out for a decent Twitter client.
I think the TP2 is the best WinMo device by far. It's fast and feature rich BUT my Blackberry remains my preferred and primary mobile device.
Luckily i have a Blackberry and a TP2 so i get the best of both worlds
My TP2 i use as my personal phone, i love its web browsing, keyboard for the heavy texting i do and all the smart little features like the WifiRouter.
Blackberry is just for seeing my emails as they arrive. I dont even really reply i just like to see them when im running around at work.

Considering Windows Phone 7

I currently own an iPhone 4 32GB on AT&T and I am considering a Windows Phone 7 device. Should I go ahead and sell my iPhone and purchase a device? I currently own a Zune (which I am selling) with a Zune Subscription (which I plan on keeping) and I am looking into selling my PS3 for an XBOX 360.
I have a lot of music, so that's what I do most. I also text and use the internet a lot, as well as check email. I also use Pandora quite a bit too (though with the Zune marketplace on the phone, probably not as much). I play games, but not often. I love the battery life of my iPhone. I also have an Otterbox to protect it's beauty. I am also a big fan of its screen and resolution. I use my phone as a camera too. Also, I want better navigation than what I currently get on my iPhone, which is MapQuest 4 (since the iPhone Maps sucks for navigation).
I have been considering the Samsung Focus, HTC Surround, and the LG Quantum. Are there more for AT&T I should consider? I really like the Dell Venue Pro, but it seems like it's not offered for AT&T.
So, what do you guys think? Should I jump ship? By the way, I LOVED the Zune and it's interface, if that helps.
Well really the only one who can decide is you. I'd head to a mobile store and just play with one until they kick you out. I have an LG Quantum, here are some thoughts:
-the software keyboard is. a-may-zing. I can type almost as fast on it as i can with two hands on a desktop. Bar none, the best I've ever used. If you text, this will blow you away. It just knows what you meant to type
-the zune player leaves a LOT to be desired, sound quality wise. wp7 needs an eq app soon. It'll get one, but for now, expect a flat sound. Very dissappointing.
-I don't know why I'm reading bad things about it, but the new IE is so fast it's overwhelming. It renders things very very quickly. Better than my wife's iPhone.
-the interface and UI is awesome. It's honestly the next step in smartphone software. Very impressive especially once you get used to it
-great Facebook integration. It adds all your Facebook/SIM contacts/hotmail contacts to one "contacts" app. Which at first sounds like too much. But after using it, I never want to go back. If I want to get a hold of anyone I've ever met, no matter from where, they're in my contacts hub. I can then choose to email them, post on their wall, text them, or call them. It's so quick and easy

I have a question on the sound. Is it comparable to the Zune, better or worse? What about in comparison to the iPhone?
I want to play with it but work and college kind of get in the way.
Like said above, go into a store and play with one. I'm gonna have to agree to everything sure said, windows phone 7 is amazing..the user interface is incredible. I've only had my HD7 for 4 days and I can't put it down. It's so smooth, the social integration with Facebook and your contacts is genius. Go play with one I doubt you'll be dissapointed

Zune player sounds just fine. He must have really bad headphones or something. But it's at the very least on par with the iPhone if not better.
However, OP, I recommend you stick with the iPhone 4 for now. Several reasons.
WP7 is currently bug infested. You should probably wait and see how and if Microsoft is going to deal with it. You also should generally wait until Mango to see whether WP7 will take off or not. It's a bit of a gamble as of right now.
If you insist on taking the chance with WP7, I recommend you wait for Nokia's WP7 phones. The current hardware is pretty good but Nokia phones will probably have nice exclusives and, if they base them on the concepts, will be the sexiest phones out there.
All signals essentially point to 'wait.'
Based on friends of mine who have made the jump, I'd say go for it. They all love the UX on Phone 7 and while the platform does miss some functionality today it's not something that you will notice on a daily basis.
In the end though, it's a question only you can answer, so I'll agree with most others here and tell you to go have a play with it in store.
I have been a long term Windows phone user (version 5, 6.1 and 6.5). Unfortunately my current MDA Vario has developed a speaker problem and I'm forced to get a new phone (T Mobile have previously 'fixed' the problem which has now returned)
What you tend to forget is that you shouldn't buy an operating system - you purchese functionality. The key thing is whether the phone can satisfy all your requirements.
As for me, Windows 7 doesn't currently satisfy 3 key requirements:
1. No internet tethering out of the box (you have to really delve down to make this work)
2. No turn by turn navigation
4. No decent ebook reader which can read either lit or mobi format (although the Kindle application has been issued, there is no easy way to load my old books which I haven't purchased from Amazon). All in all I'm very disappointed that MS Reader has not been upgraded
As a mainly business user, I'm not really too interested in Zune or Games and am a bit unhappy about syncronisation via the cloud. As a haooy Napster user (supported in 6.5), I would have to swop to Zune
So what have I decided. I have gone ahead and purchased a used HTC Diamon Pro 2 running 6.5. This will do everything I want and I will wait until Windows 7 finally catches up.

1. While I understand what you're saying it really doesn't ring true with me. If you own a Samsung you can enable tethering in 15 or so taps (including entering all the numbers).
2. Really? I have turn-by-turn on my Omnia7. Works great too. AT&T also seem to be offering some sort of navigational package, as does several other carriers around the world.
I can't comment on the ebook reader situation as I find the phone too small to read large chunks of text on anyway, but your point seems valid enough.

Really? What's your problem with the cloud exactly? Not being confrontational here, just wondering what, if any, gripes you have about using a secure always available filestore. I can understand some people not wanting to store their confidential documents on a random SkyDrive, but as a business you can run a locked down Sharepoint server locally.
I moved from a 32gb iPhone 4 to a Samsung Focus on the basis of the strength of the Zune platform. There have been drawbacks to moving over to such a new platform (marketplace bug being one main one, lack of apps being another) but also benefits such as the close facebook integration, UI, live tiles and above all, the zune integration.
I've had no sense that the zune player quality is worse (nor better) than the iphone. The desktop client and zunepass blow iTunes away. There really is no comparison.
I would play around with current phones, but as someone above said, you may want to wait and see if they announce any Nokia phones in the April timeframe (MIX 11). Although I guess the resale value of the iP4 will decline after the iP4s/5 gets released this summer.

A) No, my headphones are good quality. The PSP (generation ONE), and Samsung Omnia 2 blow it out of the water. They sound EQ'd, with presence and body. My Quantum just sounds flat.
B) After reading your post, you sound like a hater. So OP, please disregard his comments. Wp7 is not "bug ridden", it works just fine. Not sure why you insist on claiming getting a wp7 is "taking a chance". I think that description would be more apt to an Android phone, as the fragmentation has assured no one can tell which device will actually be good. As for wp7, there are hardware minimums across the board, and the software is smoother than silk. Haters gonna hate I suppose.

No. You shouldn't, especially if you already have a Zune.
That's just my opinion.
I had almost the same exact decision to make a few weeks ago. I was going to upgrade and it was either the iPhone 4 or the Samsung Focus. I went with the Samsung Focus because I already have an iPad, but it truly is a great device. Theres some bug's with it, but I'm counting on Microsoft to fix them.
Things I like:
1. Camera button
2. Interface (duh)
3. Facebook integration (I like being able to add a contact and have it automatically pull in all that users information for me)
4. Nice keyboard (like it better than the iPhones, but it still has its gripes)
5. Zune Software instead of iTunes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6. Bigger screen (Focus has a 4 inch screen and it is a big difference from the iPhone's small 3.5 inch screen)
7. Bing voice search (this is something I show all my friends. I can just say "hamburger" and it finds all the local hamburger joints around me wicked fast)
8. Flash support is coming (http://wmpoweruser.com/flash-10-2-incoming-but-no-wp7-date-announced/)
Things I don't like:
1. Marketplace is very slow, laggy, and unstable
2. Battery life isn't quite as good as the iPhone 4
3. Camera settings reset (this is not a feature Microsoft...)
4. Not as good browser (no html 5, different format that isn't quite as mobile friendly, no reordering of bookmarks).
5. Apps need PERMISSION to run under the lockscreen. If they don't even have this option they must be relaunched after you unlock your screen (why?!?!?!)
6. Less API support
7. No multitasking (will be coming this year though)
All in all make the jump as you have a 30 day period to return it (I'm still debating). If you keep it and you end up not liking it after awhile you will be just in time to upgrade to the iPhone 6 when it comes out in 2013 (possible benefit?)!

I've never used a Zune so I can't comment, but see my other post about comparing it to other devices. My wife has an iPhone, but I've never tested them side by side (that would include hooking each one up to itunes/zune and transferring the same song, etc... I'm just way too lazy for that, sorry, at least I'm being honest)

See, there it is. I've been surfing on my phone since I got it... never had a problem rendering any site. Unless you're going to some flash-laden bloatfest, I don't understand how you can't think that this IE is fantastic.

1. That's one phone on one carrier. That doesn't work. If you have T-Mobile the Samsung hack will not work. It's an outliar, and non-factor in the grand scheme of things.
2. No one in their right mind pays for Turn by Turn on a smartphone unless they need offline maps. Why pay $10 a month for Navigation when an HD2 can do it for free in Windows Mobile with the Bing App? Or an Android phone with Google Maps? $10 a month is a lot to pay just for Navigation.
The only carrier that makes sense for is Sprint, since they give away their Navigation features for free if you have their $69 (soon 79) plan. But Sprint currently has no WP7 devices.

That's your opinion, but you have pinch to zoom and automatic text restructuring in these apps that make it trivial to read. This wouldn't be a big issue if Microsoft had decent Skydrive integration in the phone. In that case you'd just need to upload them to you skydrive and find an app that can read that file format. But that isn't coming for over 6 months...

Some people just like to have better control over their stuff. There's nothing wrong with it and he doesn't have to have a problem to have this specific qualm with any smartphone platform. They are all a bit too cloud-centric, IMO.

There are HTML5 Mobile websites that are much better to use than their desktop (or WAP) counterparts on a smartphone browser.
touch.facebook.com >>> facebook.com or m.facebook.com on a mobile browser - by far. That is just one example. There are dozens if not more. HTML5 support being missing is a strike. NOt saying they need to implement the entire HTML5 Draft Spec tomorrow, but launching with basically no support for it was not a good idea, IMO.
With Multi-Tasking and third party browsers this would not be an issue, though, since we'd probably have Opera or some other Mobile Browser (probably WebKit) ported to it. If Microsoft had implemented a dual (Trident + WebKit) rendering engine, that would have been a killer feature... With the ability to set defaults on a site by site basis, of course.

1. I disagree as it's not only achievable on the Samsung handsets (of which there are actually 2 available), the LG ones are just as easy. HTC handsets can also tether but IIRC, yes, you do have to dwelwe a little deeper. Point is, out of the 9 launch handsets, 4 can tether by entering a few numbers onto the phone - so do what people did way back when, chose a device based on functionality rather than looks. Also, as a business user, get yourself an off contract device - it costs the same (or in many cases less) in the long run, but gives you more choice. Also, don't forget the world is a lot larger than the US, the Omnia7 can be had on pretty much any network you like in Europe - on-contract if you so please.
2. I don't pay. Navigon came free with my off-contract Omnia7. Sure, I had to spoof the Navigon http server for map downloads other than Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, but there is no monthly fee. I realize some of the other carriers do charge you (ATT being one), but the point here is that there are options available to you. Regarding paying for navigation, as much as I love Bing (or even Google) maps due to its satellite imagery it's not, IMO, a replacement for a dedicated navigational tool ... yet, and looking at the sales statistics for these apps on the iPhone, most people seem to agree with me.
I'm not condoning the fact Bing did not have turn-by-turn out of the box, far from it, but to broadly say "No turn-by-turn" available and use that as one of three reasons for dropping the OS is just wrong.

Of course it's my opinion. Pinch to zoom or text reflow makes no difference to me, I still don't like reading books on a 4" display. That's what tablets are for IMO. Like I said though, I wasn't really commenting on it and agreed that his point was valid.

Better control? How can you have better control than a correctly configured and secured Sharepoint server hosted by yourself? Sure, you could live in the old days and manually copy files on and off your phone, forever wondering if that really was the final version or the second to last draft or whether your colleague had amended it between your last sync and the presentation, but really. Are you serious?
Using your phone as a mass storage device was never a good idea - it was a stop-gap measure because at the time it was invented/popular we didn't have S3 or properly configured corporate networks that allowed users access on-the-go.

I'm not saying its a bad browser, it is in fact very good, but not quite as polished as iOS's Safari browser. I like to organize my bookmarks from most used -> least used, but WP7 only organizes them alphabetically. iOS use's WebKit for its browser which is more supported than IE's rendering engine (what is it?). If you go to gmail for example you will get a hampered down dump phone mobile view (this is simply for example, other sites do this as well).
Yeah, ironically IE renders mobile sites way worse than Android or iPhone. The websites are partly to blame because of course they have had lots of time to optimize for those platforms. I don't mind the rendering of full sites... sometimes the font sizes are way off, but overall not bad and at least it's quick.
All in all the browsing experience is not as good as the other mobile platforms. I've got high hopes that IE9 fixes that.

is this tablet worth for 250 euros?

Hi,
microsoft is doing an offer for all student in some european countries selling the tablet with the touch cover for about 250 euro, is it worth?
i want to use it for office, surfing the net, reading comic (especially mangas), listening music and so on.
I used the original transformer (TF101), so how it compares with it? and the mostly important question how does this tablet works with the stylus? i have the adonit jot pro does it work well for taking notes?
Thanks.

The wacom stylus is only on the pro which is not in the 250 euro offer. A traditional capacitive stylus (ie a finger replacement, doesnt do any fancy pressure sensing, palm blocking or anything) still works on the RT. The jot pro is a capacitive stylus so will work.
The RT can only run apps from the store or those specifically proted to jailbroken devices. But it does have microsoft office on there (a few macros and advanced features missing but its more or less the full version) and the full internet explorer 10 (sorry, no alternatives).
Some people have reported audio issues on the speakers (but not headphones) with the last windows 8.0 update for RT, think that's sorted in 8.1, otherwise there are several audio apps on the store with my personal favourite being nokia music, however I am still not happy with that so I am half considering writing my own. VLC is on its way and I think there might be some other players over in the ported desktop applications thread. I dont know if the old windows media player is on RT desktop mode, but the default music app isn't great, you will want a 3rd party one.
Comics I dont know about. I think there might be a comic reader in the ported desktop applications thread (I dont know much about what formats they support or what formats these comics even come in as I dont read them digitally) and I saw a surface pro review where they had some sort of comic app from the windows store. If they are PDF's though, there is a PDF app built in which for just reading a document is absolutely fine, other fields it leaves a bit to be desired but I am happy with it for my needs on an x86_64 desktop.
I dont own one but for actual productivity purposes it should certainly beat your old asus.
For that matter, if you're asking about Surface, shouldn't you be asking about it in the Surface subforum? This subforum is about Windows RT, which runs on a number of different tablets...
I actually own both the tf101 and the surface RT and the Surface is infinitely most fast and responsive. I've tried a capacitive stylus with both tablet and neither of them really were satisfactory, so if that's really important I would suggest going elsewhere. Otherwise, the Surface is easily the best productivity-centric tablet. Personally, I'd say it's a great deal.

@GoodDayToDie if i asked here and said adonit jot as stylus it means i was referring to the rt version, otherwise i would have asked in the other forum
To all the others thanks for the nice answers, i'm not yet completely sure about buying it, i'll see if i can try it in some shops
This is a ridiculously good offer. Do not hesitate and get one, you will not regret it!
My point is that you never even said if you were asking about a Surface or about one of the other RT tablets. The Surface sub-forum is at least about Surface devuices (be they RT or Pro) rather than about the OS which happens to run on some devices, some of which happen to be Surfaces.
In any case, I second the other commentators: 250, especially if that includes tax, is a fantastic deal.

What features are you going to miss, love or are concerned with when buying the Fold?

Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.

I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode

Looks like we'll still be able to create a gif from a video (you could still have done it on the S9's too). Here's a tutorial for the S10's so I'm sure the Fold will be able to make one too:

Also, it is Dex ready/capable.
Great points you've made in your response! Thx!

The specs on Samsung.com for the Fold only show NFC for Samsung Pay. They did the same thing on the Galaxy Watches.

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).
MST not listed in their specs but hopefully it's just incorrect. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. Good luck gents.

I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
