You're right on top of things thunder, good job.
I dont really see many people posting MOD's for ROM's instead there a million ROMs of the same thing and basically simple mods. I figure I can start by cranking out some mods if I got time.
MOD Buffet would be great instead of a ROM buffet. Makes it easier to learn what changed and how to change things in the future.
Agreed, I would like to do a lot myself. I'm glad you're jumping on it. It's definitely appreciated.
I'm having all sorts of goo.im issues (the sharing website, NOT a "personal" problem).
Are there any mirrors out there?

ODEX Untested version in the OP. Flash at your own risk, at worst youll have to restore your current rom so make a backup first.
I flashed this via TWRP on the rooted stock OTA MK3 ROM... and I think I bricked my phone. It won't move past the glowing Samsung screen. Have I totally screwed myself?
EDIT: I did make a full backup beforehand, so I'll try to do a restore. I'm not sure what went wrong.

Just restore in TWRP. It is very hard to brick an android device with a system only write. All this was replace your android policy jar and odex in the framework folder. You can probably just flash the Rom you had on your phone previous the flash of the mod and should be fine.

I just flashed it and my phone sat at the Samsung screen on reboot. I restored my backup in TWRP and all is well.
Restore didn't work.
It looks like someone has gotten an Odin version of the OTA, so I guess I'll have to go that route. I did a full backup, so hopefully I'll still be able to access some of the files I've added the last couple of days that I hadn't had a chance to backup to my computer yet.
Or, if it's truly bricked, looks like it's time for a new phone!
I just pulled the mod. Proof enough for me it doesn't work universally. I seriously doubt you hard bricked your phone. This is very hard to do using functions of recovery with out a script built to do so.

Not sure why but the .tar file is followed by a .md5 extention, so I just removed it and it became a .tar, just for others to know, thanks
the md5 extension is so you know it hasnt been messed with, and so you know the download is not corrupt...
odin flashes md5s and checks the downloads...
What would be the benefit of flashing this versus your other similar kernel? Sorry if this is a stupid question....
Thank you so much. This is perfect. Do have a question. Does this have a new version of cwm or the same one from yesterday? I ask cause the back soft button wasn't working and the storage mounts were reversed. Just checking to see if that has been fixed.

It is the same just without root and busybox. He made it for those of us that prefer having root controlled at the system level versus the kernel. You don't lose anything either way. If you use this you have to make sure you are running an already rooted rom. There is less conflict by doing this since most, if not all, roms are already rooted.

Once again thanks for you help. One last stupid question before I retire from stupidity, but how do I know which way I am rooted? I thought the only way to root was FROM the kernel. I ask because I'm specifically on midnight rom v2 and have no clue which way I'm rooted.
Is there any way someone could upload a mirror to a different site? I'm wanting to flash this but I'm at work and my company is blocking the site that the link is for. If you can that would be awesome if not, no big deal. I'll try and get it when I get home.
Edit: Nevermind. Managed to get it from my phone.
I can up it to megaupload if that helps Tiffany.

Just curious, if someone has flashed chris' previous kernel, what benefit is there supposed to be? Is it not the same stock kernel with some tweaks? Especially if you're concerned with losing root. Not singling anyone out, just curious as to the rationale.

Because kernels that have forced copying of root & busybox cause issues when you start using complete custom ROMs because they overwrite files that are already included. Plus if your including a custom recovery, what the point of including root, etc when the user can now flash what they want?
Also, Chris, the recovery you have included in this won't mount the internal storage or even make a backup to it or recover, it only wants to use the external sd card and since I don't use one because of the delay it causes coming from sleep, I can't do anything except test flash stuff
I flashed this around noon and once my phone rebooted, I updated my 'profile' under 'about phone'. Everything seemed fine, an hour later...I had a LOS, rebooted and got it back, an hour later, same thing...LOS. Rebooted and I updated the profile again, it's fine for now.
Do we have to update profile every time we do a reboot??
Didn't have any issues when in stock.
Hi all, this is my first post and i hope to take advantage from it.
I've done a lot of research in the android development forums. The first thing i did to my phone was to get it rooted. So far so good, i followed the instructions and everything went ok.
Now i want to install a ROM. Thing is there is a lot of terminology i do not quite understand and i want to know for sure how this process is done correctly. In theory i know how to install a ROM but some disclaimers keeps me from doing it.
The main question here is, my phone has to meet some prerequisites in order to install a ROM? I mean, the android version of my phone, baseband version, kernel version and build number necessarily need to have the same characteristics from the ROM i will be flashing? For example, Team Kang's Juggernaut base band version is T989VKID mine is T989UVKL1, the android version is 2.3.5, mine is 2.3.6 and so on. That basically is it. I do not want to mess up my phone but at the same time i wanna enjoy those great roms.
Thanks in advance and i wish a happy valentine's day to all
Download ROM manager. Pick install from sd card. Wipe data and cache. Pick the ROM you downloaded. Just make sure you only install roms from this forum
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The answer to your question is basically no. Roms don't change your baseband. So that doesn't matter. If your on 2.36 and you install a 2.35 ROM you'll just be on 2.35. But in the case of a kickass ROM that would be just fine.

instead of using rom manager, I would suggest doing everything from the CWM recovery itself. The manual way is always better and you encounter less problems along the way..
i.e. backup/restore isn't complete. didn't wipe everything clean... etc.

I could be wrong but I think the last version of CWM wont let you make backups to the internal but you can flash from the internal. But the newest touch version that just came out a few weeks ago does have internal suppoert for backups so you have to flash the latest one. And I would listen to them when they say not to use rom manager there are far too many problems with it. Also the latest version of juggs is 4.1 and that is 2.3.6. I would use that one. Good luck

So this must mean we can flash fash back to stock with odin if we have problems.
yup! this is our fall back ROM. now we need a triangle away to reset the counter!
It Works
I decided to be the test monkey on this one.
I had a nandroid backup of when I screwed my system so badly it just boot looped repeatedly. Restored that with cwm, verified it was still hosed, unpacked this zip, used odin to burn the .tar.md5 to the phone as PDA, rebooted.
It does some gear chunking while booting the first time then reboots - don't panic yet! On second boot it does some more rebuilding, then 'WELCOME!'
Bonus: CWM now sees the actual external sdcard as /sdcard and can find things like roms and backups on it. Edit: This CWM finds .zips on the sdcard, but doesn't seem to know how to backup/restore.
So is this for un rooting our phones?

After burning this with Odin I ended up with a CWM that I didn't expect - and I've never seen one that actually recognized the external card. However, with all the things I've been trying it's quite possible I ended up burning a boot image I forgot about. I need to try reburning this and see if anything changes, but can't do it right now.

Strange - I had kind of a weird experience with this. I flashed via Odin as usual (as I've done a 100x before) and when it rebooted, it still had remnants of the previous rom I had installed. I didn't get the "welcome" screen as if I was starting from a new factory rom. but at least it got me back to step 1 and I could flash the Lean 2.1 rom again to repair my screw ups.
This is a Plain Stock ODEXED Rooted ZVC ROM. It has Root and Qualcom app removed. If you need the ZVC radio, get it from HERE
Must have unlocked bootloader.
In TWRP, factory reset, then wipe /system, /cache, /dalvic, and /data. (Do not wipe internal data, /data/media - that's your SD.)
When it boots up, turn off Wifi. For some reason it always turns itself on when first booted up.
Then go to Settings>System Updates and update Profile, PRL.
Then Settings>Activate this device.

Thanks for this! I've been having endless problems getting ANYTHING to bring my device past a bootload screen or recovery. This managed to get through successfully and load (no data, but phone calls were OK) However it would constantly reboot anytime I altered settings. This, I believe is due to whatever issue it is I am having with the phone, and not this ROM. I was just pleased to find a original stock rom and actually see an OS on my phone (however brief it may have been)
I should also mention I had to sideload this as it was the only method available in my current situation. After a reboot it hung on the LG screen for a solid 20 minutes or so before moving onto the Sprint 4GLTE and then Android itself.
This upload at least gave me hope that no other rom had yet to achieve (that my phone's emmc or internal memory is just fried?!
Either way. Thanks again for your efforts

An unmodified, deodexed, ROM will boot up slower. Not quite sure on this part, but, it has something to do with how Deodexed isn't cached like odex, so it makes it a little slower.
If you're looking for the most stock experience, odexed will run like factory.

My anal-ness made me do this. And thanks to Shabbypenguin and xboxfanj, I got what I wanted.
What is different in this version is the kernel is straight from the ROM. So this Rom will have ALL the markings of stock. Kernel included. If you install this, relock your phone and un-root, it'll look like factory.
Also added is a flashable zip for the LG Stock Kernel. All LG Markings.
When I get time, I'll update the Deodexed version.
EDIT. You DO NOT have to use this if you downloaded a prior one. Unless you want to.
EDIT2. I forgot to mention, I did zipalign this version
Another, and the main reason I made this, is that this would be like a simple version of LGNPST. IT WILL NOT REPLACE LGNPST. But it may help to fix simpler problems.
For instance:
Flash ZVC modem in OP
While still in recovery flash ROM
Voila! ZVC ALMOST like LGNPST
You the man bro!

No. You'll still have root and you'll still be unlocked. You have to be both to flash it.
This'll just return everything to a bone stock rooted/unlocked phone.

Well I learned a lesson just now on how I should really step out of original dev thread more often and check this one out. I literally just finished lgnpst -_-. But my problem isn't fixed so I'm downloading anyway. Great job, this is needed more than people may realize.
This is what I am currently on. I can't get 3g. I just got a new screen. Its been busted since last June. I'm trying to switch to a new ROM or even stock, but I can't get my phone to flash the 4.4.2 gapps package. Can someone walk me through this and maybe post links? Any help will be appreciated.
Oh.. And Xbox gave me the new twrp zip. That allows me to actually flash the ROM but not the zip. (Status 7 error)

Maybe just a bad gapps download? Are you using Bank's gapps? Also, the picture you posted said Android 4.2.2, gapps 4.4.2 won't work with that. But if you have the updated twrp and are flashing a 4.4.2 rom, my best guess is 4.4.2 gapps was just a bad download.....

Ha ha yeah, that's no good. I think core is 25mb and standard(which you will probably want for most 4.4.2 roms) is 75-80mb. That's probably your issue. Until you get everything installed and working, I would make a backup of your current system even if 3g is borked so you still have something to revert back to. So once you download gapps, from twrp's main menu I would do the following. Go into backup and backup everything. Once that is finished go back to the twrp main screen and select wipe. Then select advanced and wipe everything except internal storage. So data, system, cache and dalvik all need wiped. Maybe even do it twice to make sure. Then install the rom, and then gapps, then reboot. As long as the downloads are good, you should be good to go! And always make sure you have the appropriate gapps version for the rom 4.4.1 rom needs 4.4.1 gapps, etc. And if you do go back to flashing stock, that shouldn't need gapps, only AOSP/CM based roms will. Good luck!
I appreciate it. I've been swapping back and forth with my backup. Finally got vanir installed but 3g still won't work. Can you send me a link to a stock jb ROM? I was told by Xbox I may need to update the prl and profile.

Yep, what he said and xbox is right. Once you get stock up and running make sure you make a backup for that and keep it safe - so you can update prl/profile for data or sometimes roms won't be able to get a gps lock. Again, you will have to flash back to stock and get a lock, then flash the rom and that usually fixes it. Backups make things so much easier. Go nandroid! And you are welcome, always glad to help over here in the lgog forums!

It totally is, wtf?
Here is the link to the zvc deodexed rom thread here.
Or the classic odexed stock zvc here.
Both links are working, just clicked em, lol. Odexed is stock, deodexed, read the thread but it allows you to theme the stock. I'd probably go with the second link because you are switching to another rom anyway.
You rock. Thanks for your help. Also should I do a backup of my current setup or do I need to reflash this ROM after getting 3g to work?

Dam XDA app is being weird again. Sorry
GO with the stock odexed. It's the closest to stock so less chance for errors.

If you used LGNPST and a stock zvc bin file you would, but the link is for a zvc odexed rooted rom. Basically stock zvc already rooted. As for keeping the backup, I would make a backup of the zvc rom(once you update and make sure everything works), and get rid of the other one after you backup that one. Then just flash your new rom and gapps, if you have any issues, you can go right back to a working stock and try again or something else.

No prob, Im having issues with my new linux mint 16 install, mdm failed and I couldnt boot so I was back and forth. Could only startx and cinnamon was running without hardware virtualization - SO slow on a dual core 1.7ghz vaio. But I disabled mdm login and all is back to normal. Thanks to you for picking up my slack earlier buddy.
EDIT: By the way @engine95, will he have any issue flashing that zvc rom from the updated twrp? I've never tried it and I think xbox gave him chad's twrp-geespr recovery(just guessing though).
I used LGNPST (sp?) when we first got jb to root. I haven't used this phone since July first. We didn't have zvc back then. I'm just wondering if I flash it will I lose root? I don't have a comp at the moment. Mother board crapped out.
Also the second link is dead. There's no download and the description says dead link. Lol

XDA is killing me today. Here is the direct link from androidfilehost. http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23252070760972777
Edit here's dev host. http://d-h.st/qV2
Edit 2. It is already rooted, so just flash and go.
You should have no problems installing with any TWRP. Not sure about CWM

EDIT: He beat me to it, but I'm downloading and saving it myself just in case. 846mb - I forget how big stock is!
Lol yeah stock is huge. So much unneeded bloat. Thank you guys for sticking with me and helping also having a sense of humor as well.

And no, you shouldn't lose root with this, it's already rooted. The stock zvc bin with LGNPST sets your phone back to factory including losing root. This should be zvc with root.

Anytime man, as Ive said multiple times, plenty of people, including engine, helped me when I first got this phone(and they continue to do so). Let us know how it goes!
I used to know a lot about phones but when I started going to school i dropped my guide status at android forums and stopped coming around all together. Now I got this phone fixed I wanted to make sure it completely works.

Yeah Ive been into computers for over 20 years but some of this phone stuff is still new to me. And the lgog is very different from my old evo4g, but I'm learning. I still need to get a new pc so I can start building roms myself. Well glad to have you here man, the ls970 is a great phone and has a great community behind it.
