Using custom ROMs, CWM & TWIP, backup apps like Titanium and Reware MyBackup, etc. are not new to me. I've done my share of ROMs on various phones & tablets.
It's really easy to say wipe data for best results when upgrading to a new Android version or ROM. That's typically what I've done as recommended.
But, when a carrier like T-Mo finally pushes out their update, for example the MK2 to move to 4.3, the data gets upgraded automatically and reliably. Obviously no wiping of data.
I don't want the locked MK2 bootloader and KNOX. Other than that, I'm OK with mostly stock.
If I flash one of the MK2 modified stock ROMs on top of stock 4.2 (maybe just rooted), will it upgrade the data just as it would when you do a carrier upgrade? If necessary, I would also flash the latest KT kernel & modem, so Wi-Fi calling would work and the latest baseband would match. Again, as close as stock for now w/o locked bootloader & KNOX.
This would save me a lot of headache and hassles with having to use Titanium for apps & data. I can always also do a Nandroid to back up before an after this entire process.
Has anyone tried to upgrade to the latest modified stock MK2 ROM on top of a stock MDL ROM and keep their data?
If you flash the rom you have to use titanium but believe me it's 10 times better than doing the ota.. It's worth extra step.sit down watch TV and let titanium do its thing.

A little background... I've been a SW developer for 20 years. I want to understand how stuff works. I have no problem screwing around with my phone, Nandroid, wipe data, etc. and have already done so. My wife just wants a working phone and could care less. I want to upgrade her phone w/o locking her bootloader and w/o KNOX in case I want to use her phone later. She wants all here system and app data to remain identical, otherwise, I'll have to hear her *****ing & moaning until I fix it.
Technically, is there any difference between flashing a the modified 4.3 stock ROM w/o wiping data and doing a traditional carrier upgrade in how it handles the upgrade for any data partition? (ignoring bootloader & modem upgrades). Does the carrier upgrade do anything different after it formats and installs onto the system partition? I wouldn't think so. Please correct me if I'm wrong here.
Also, I think it can be sketchy restoring TB System Data from older OSes (4.2) onto newer OSes (4.3). I'm particularly referring to stuff like SMS/MMS/Call Logs/etc. Maybe I'm wrong here and a newer OS is always expected to be able to upgrade order system data if restored?
So, in order to retain all that stuff (for her phone), it would seem that simply flashing the modified 4.3. ROM onto a dirty 4.2 data partition would be exactly what the carriers do when they push the update form 4.2 to 4.3?
Here, go to this thread follow the directions in the OP carefully and your wife will be on the latest boot loader Knox free MK2. Once you've finished that then you can flash any type of 4.3 ROM or 4.4 and not have datadrops or any problems. Pretty much doing the 4.3 ota for the bootloader but Knox free.

Flashing roms without wiping is not always a great idea. If you do... atleast clear cache and dalvik cache. You won't lose your data but you may or may not have issues. YMMV. As far as transferring system data from different Android versions, that is a no no. Just backup your sms and what not using the various programs on the Play store, most of them do a good job. What I REALLY recommend is for you to make a Nandroid backup using Nandroid manager or through your recovery such as CWM or PhilZ. Once you have this backup safely stored on an EXTERNAL SD card or on your computer, you can experiment and flash away. I doubt you'll have problems since the upgrade is minor but just have your backup handy... it is critical in case you have problems after doing the dirty upgrade and to avoid getting your butt whooped by the wifey

Because some roms wipe the data partition before they install, some don't, all depends on the dev who made it. That being said, u are SUPPOSED to do a factory reset and a system format in cwm before flashing any rom

Using Odin to flash firmware is different from using cwm to flash roms.
Stock roms are treated as updates. Unless you're updating to a new firmware base, aka 2.2 to 2.3, or 2.3.6 to 4.0.4, data is left in tact, and new system changes are flashed over the existing rom.
Updates changing the firmware base wipe everything before installing to ensure no incompatibility problems.

Sorry noob here but it's my understanding that I can't back up my App data and upgrade to ICS from GB, Is that correct? Is their anyway of updating to ICS and keep app data? I'm rooted and running Juggernaut ROM.
I believe most user apps and data can be restored from GB to ICS, just don't restore any system app, and keep in mind that some apps and games may not be compatible with ics and that's going to make the restoring batch get stuck, just keep that on mind
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Will it Brick or Soft brick my phone if i redo a batch and it's not compatible do you know?
If you restore system apps or their app data, then it is likely, but if restored user apps have compatibility issues then you'll mostly get force closes.

I do suggest referencing this post which has so far the best route if you're going your route. I have been able to upgrade and keep all the data using the stock upgrade in Kies for two other phones (not mine) and they have not had any issues.
I went the odin flash route and just want to remind you to wipe all the system partitions (I used Darkside SuperWipe) then flash Radio then flash ROM
hope that saves you some time.
Thanks Guys!!
Yeah, just hit batch and restore missing apps w/data. You'll be fine.

I last updated my Dinc2 to the 4.08.605.3 patch back in October, and haven't updated since then (I'm rooted, so the OTA updates don't come down). I'm otherwise running stock, and would like to update to the latest (6.01.605.05), but to do so I need all of the updates that came between what I'm running and what was just released. I found the OTApkg.zip for the latest release, but I know there was at least the 5.10.605.9 release in between, and I can't seem to find that package.
I know how to strip out the unneeded firmware from the update package so that it won't fail (all I want/need is the boot and radio, and then update the MD5 sums in the manifests), I just need the files to do so. Does anyone have links to (or can post) copies of the older update(s)?
Thanks!
Why can't you just flash the latest update found in the development section.? Don't see why you would need all the ones in between

I'd rather not have to flash an entire ROM, which (I believe) would blow out everything on my device and make me start over installing apps and so forth. In any case, applying the updates is something I feel a lot more comfortable doing, since I've done it before, and thus I'd rather go that route this time as well. And Verizon's updates aren't cumulative, so you need to apply one on top of the other.
I'm not so adventurous that I want to completely depart from the stock ROM, but I also want to keep my root
If you are worried about apps and such just backup with titanium.
To my knowledge you could jump from one to another... Might need to wipe in recovery before doing so but you can restore the apps without having to download again... U can backup app data if needed as well...

Oh, I know I can do all that, but it's rather time consuming, and I'd much rather do the work necessary to deal with the upgrade off of my phone than on, meaning a small update and no wipe is preferable to having to do all them backup and restore, even if it means more work on my Linux box...
You can just flash the stock rom posted in development over your current setup only wiping cache and dalvik and you really shouldn't have any problems or have to set up anything again. Just make a nandroid first in case you were to come across any issues, but you really shouldn't have any.

Hi Folks,
Newbie question here. I had installed the wonderful I317_Repack_T889_N7105ZHALJ4 ROM when it was first introduced in November. Not too bad, but kind of a pain. Last weekend I tried to install the Lidroid ROM, twice actually, and then I had to back it out because the phone went dead twice.
So my question is there an easier way to seemlessly install the ROM like the carriers tend to?
My process was something along these lines:
Take a TIBU off everything
do a Nandroid backup
Follow the flash process, I use CWM
Restore the apps, with app data using TIBU
Triangle away
Rebuild the APN
Setup all the screen layouts, widgets
Setup all the system default settings
Generally, the ROM builders recommend to not restore the app data. Boy it is a BIG time consumer if one has to go back and setup all app passwords and setting. Lots of apps I guess.
Even if I restore the app data, one still has to go through and setup all the phone defaults, home screens again, and general settings. Ends up taking me hours.
So is there some secret method to do this quicker, and easier? Is there something besides Titanium Backup that can save all this stuff, like system settings, home screen layout, app data and settings when going to a higher level of Android? Something that makes the process easier but is reliable?
Thanks in advance.
Well if you are talking about going back to stock, I have a topic for that in general.
If you are talking about flashibg roms...
I would make a nandroid backup of a stock rooted firmware the way you want it, then restore it when you want to flash a rom.
Your steps should now be this
Back up stock rooted firmware (once)
Then when flashing...
1. Restore backup of stock rooted firmware.
2. Flash Rom.
Then when you want a new Rom follow the same steps.
Why do triangle away over and over. If you want to revert to stock unrooted then do that.
I never use tibu anymore.... too lazy.

personally i flash over roms, I will only revert to stock if flashing over another rom causes problems.
I haven't been to stock on my note 1 since.... 5 minutes after I got it home..... in April
Just wipe and flash new rom.
Pretty much Any issue with a Rom installing( even say a boot loop) can be fixed with a simple redownload of the rom then moving it over to phone in recovery, wiping and flashing again. Or... restoring a backup of you are the type to make backups.
I pretty much treat going to stock add just for returning a phone for warranty due to legitimate hardware defects nowadays.
I'm running CM11 with CWM Recovery. I don't want to get ride of CWM Recovery.

Wow! I had already forgotten all about that! Lol!
And just fyi to the op, the one you asked about is the full firmware. If you want to flash just a stock Rom but keep everything else as is, use the link from serio22, or pick whichever rom you prefer from dev section. There should be a plain stock rom for every build, you just have to dig for most of them. They will all most likely be rooted, deodexed, and de-knoxed just so you know.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
I'm very new to this.
I saw the link serio22 posted.
I chose the Based on the Official Release. T999_Official_UVUEMJC_Deodexed_KnoxFree.
Do I actually need to use the other files such as Kernels and Modems?
Thanks.
Depends.. If you updated to official 4.3 firmware before cm11 then no.. If you didn't, then yes.. And I just realized I gave you a link to an older 4.3 build.. Newest one is NC2, if you want it try to see if you can find a ROM based on it
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
I don't think I need the newest 4.3.
I'm doing this because I have a friend who currently has the same phone as I do but his screen is fully cracked. I suppose the full digitizer is.
So he's wondering if I he can use my phone temporarily to get his data out. I tried getting out from the Kies desktop software but can't access due to his password lock.
I just thought of installing 4.3 on my phone and sync his previous data from his computer to my phone.
I myself have never updated to 4.3 on my phone. I suppose he has. He doesn't remember. I don't want to change my CWM recovery. Just a quick install to 4.3 and back to CM11 after.
So you're saying I have to install the Modem and Kernel too in order I can get 4.3 working on my phone?
Thanks.
Well actually, the modem and kernel is just to get data and WiFi working, but given the circumstances, I don't think it would really matter
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
The kernel should be included in the rom. Without the modem, data connections and phone signal won't work as serio22 said. If you're running cm11 though you might want to consider updating the firmware anyway. As I understand it, the roms work much better with full 4.3 firmware. You might want to verify that though.
Just curious, how are you planning to try and get his data to your phone? Is it a nandroid backup? I can tell you a possible alternative to be able to get his current data off his device. He'd have to be using a custom kernel I think though. (A custom recovery might be enough. Can't remember for sure)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
His phone only has been using the official firmware. No extra modding at all.
The only data he needs is his contacts, notes, and possibly his photos.
I will give it a try with these 4.3 ROMs and see if it'll work.
Thanks.

Hey... if you're just trying to recover his data why don't you use Odin to flash cwm to his phone and use the hardware buttons to do a nandroid backup?
Seems to be the easiest option to me.
You may be able to do a factory reset to get rid of the password lock while you're at it without wiping his internal sd card. From there its just a matter of plugging in to pc and copying the sd contents to desktop.

I was able to get the data he last synced with Kies before but only up to the last date he synced, which was November 2013.
I don't think I can do the nandroid backup because the screen is totally black. Digitzer is broken. The phone itself still works. I can see my desktop reading it.
Is there anyway I can fully duplicate his current data and settings to my phone now without depending on the broken screen?
Thanks.

Clockwork mod recovery can use the hard keys to select options and execute commands.
Just put the same recovery on his phone using Odin and boot with hard button method (volume up, home and power buttons. Let go of power after first vibrate)
Then simply use the volume and power buttons and mirror the actions on his phone to create a backup.
Since you will be creating a backup of your phone at the same time it will be safe to restore the one you make from his phone on yours and retrieve data.
Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk
Is that safe to do with a black screen?
I can't see if I have chosen the wrong option while trying to replace the Recovery system.
Thanks.
Alternatively you can try to use adb from your computer. If you are not familiar with it just Google android adb and it should tell you all about it, how to install and use it.
You'll probably need to flash an insecure or custom kernel (should be able to do this from odin).
Then boot up the device (I prefer doing this from recovery), connect to the computer and start adb. Once confirmed its running and it sees the device, enter the following command:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=\path\on\computer\data.img
This can take a while.
Then boot recovery on your phone and enter the command again, but in reverse.
dd if=\path\on\computer\data.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15
This will write the data to your device where you can then use it exactly as he had it before the screen broke.
You might think its easier to use cwm as stated above, but I figured id offer an alternative in case youre not comfortable with it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Either way is safe. You would literally be mirroring actions on your phone.
Press a button on your phone and do the same on his.
Since cwm and other custom recoveries are all the same setup when using the same versions I've actually done that to make a nandroid backup on a completely different model phone. Specifically I used a Huawei Ascend (original) to guide me through backing up a huawei M835 without a hitch since they both use the same recovery system.

Thanks for all the tips.
I managed to enter the PIN to the broken phone and backed up the most recent data using Kies software.
I realized how much little space I have left on my phone after having restored only some of those data.
Is the old CM11 install files still taking up the space right now? If so, how can I delete them?
I already placed the backup file from CM11 to my own microSD card.
Thanks.
If youre running low on space its most likely because you either have a lot of apps installed, or just are simply using a lot with your own stuff. When you flash a rom it formats the system partition and writes the new one. Going between cm and tw, you would've had to factory reset so there shouldn't be anything left from your previous one except for your own user data on the sdcards. You just need to dig in with a file explorer and find what's eating up your space. (Your nandroid backups do take up a lot of space, up to 2gb each, so check thst you dont have multiple backups saved.)
