i need to unroot my s3 for warranty purposes but i cannot find proper procedures for the the model sgh-t999v..
i have 2 questions,
1. can i just root a stock rom for sgh-t999 to my sgh-t999v?
2. anyone have the procedures to unroot my sgh-t999v
thanks
Flash a stock rooted Rom. T-Mobile one. That seems to be ok as long as you don't flash a T-Mobile radio.
Not sure if triangle away works on the Canadian version.
Maybe someone else has tried it.
All I had to do to return my last one was flash a stock rooted Rom.
I don't think they check the flash counter

If the Rom has some T-Mobile bloat left on it get it off there.

Or you can download the actual fw for your device. You will have to register but its no big deal.

I can see you have a Videotron Galaxy S3. They don't check the flash counter. Let's just say I know this "by experience". As long as it's just rooted and you don't have any custom ROM, you should be fine. But indeed if you can at least hide the SU app it would be a good thing.
You could also perform a factory reset in CWM prior to going to the store, as they will make you do it anyways (and you actually don't want them to see the CWM screen)prior to any exchange. It's company policy.

It's still probably safer to just use Triangle Away to get rid of the flash counter

If your trying to go back to stock, just download the stock rom from sammobile, it has everything you need like stock recovery, and then just flash it via odin.

Yes it should be the full fw which includes radio, recovery and more.

Thanks!
I'll test it tonight, wouldn't look good to download a 700 mb file at work!
I tried a few firmwares, but for some reason they all said "unsupport dev_type" when trying to use odin to return to stock non root (from stock rooted) In the end, the easiest way to remove root was to just let Kies update my gs3 to Jelly Bean (sgh-t999v). Painless, no data loss, took about 30 minutes with the firmware download.
Good luck
You will likely also want to triangle away. I won't link because it's extremely dangerous software that requires you to read up on the risks.
But that will reset your custom flashes assuming you have some on your counter you can check easily by going into download mode.
i recently lost my stock rom backup.. deleted it off clockworkmod touch by accident, so i only have the cm10.1 nightly i was running when i deleted it.. now i'm assuming i will lose root if i flash the stock firmware through odin? is there another way to get my stock rom back without losing root (and cyanogenmod rom backups)?
hey guys im having trouble with triangle away on my sgh-t999v with the baseband version: T999VVLUFNF1
after I used triangle away and I go into download mode it says:
current binary: Samsung Official
System status: official
qualcomm secureboot:enable
Warranty Bit:1
Bootloader AP SWAEV: 2
Although the current binary and the system status have changed the warranty bit is still at 1
Please help!
There is no way (and never will be a way) to change the Warranty Bit. Sorry

I guess im screwed for warranty..I thought it might be cuz I have a custom kernal installed that triangle away didnt work..but thanks anyway and sorry about posting in multiple threads, im kinda new to this
No problem, thats why i mention it, so you know for the future.
Tecnically, with the warranty bit tripped, the warranty is void. However, i have seen a lot of posts where people sent it in anyway and their warranty was still honored. Its not a guarantee, but there is hope it can be used if needed. The good thing though, is you most likely will never need to use it anyway!
How do I downgrade 4.3 to 4.2.2? 4.3 has alot of problems, wifi keeps dropping. I am using Rochester Institute of Technologys internet. How would I do that?
Thanks
Tmobile Galaxy s4, m919
I don't think you can due to knox.
With the newer MK2 bootloader and knox people seem to report bricks when attepting.
You might want to root, flash the older modems and see if that makes a difference.
I ran a 4.3 custom rom with 4.2 modems and bootloader without issues for the most part.

You need to go to http://SamMobile.com and download the
official stock M919 MDL firmware for your phone.
After doing that go into recovery mode and do a factory reset.
Once that's done you need to Odin flash the stock MDL firmware.
After doing that your phone will be 4.2.2 stock.
It will need to be re-rooted if you want root access and you will also need
to flash the custom cwm/twrp recovery if you want.
Good luck!

As for your root problem, try asking this in the i9500 specific forum. Our devices are sufficiently different that what works for ours won't work for yours.
As far as downgrading, you're probably out of luck like every other S4 owner in existence.

yes it downgraded the bootloader, the modem didnt take though, the bst dongle is a phone service box. and it allowed the downgrade. i was able to get the wireless back after i upgraded to the next firmware version. i dont have the s4 any more but i wanted to try it because everyone said it could not be done. and i did it. with a service box.

I've been searching for this dongle but I think is only available for the i9500, not for the T-Mobile M919.
I'm planning on upgrading to another phone so I'm trying to get this counter on my phone reset to 0, then unrooting.
Right now I am on the latest version of Insanity ROM Android 4.3 MK2 Baseband .
I tried resetting the counter using TriangleAway earlier, but I noticed I needed to be on a stock Samsung kernel.
So I found one (and this same thing happened when I tried to flash a stock rooted ROM with MDL) on XDA directly for the T-Mobile S4, only to find out that after flashing, it wouldn't get past the black screen after the SGS4 logo comes on.
Luckily, I restored back
I know how to unroot and everything I just want to ask before I do this,. Can I go ahead on using Triangle Away on my current rom? And then do the unrooting process?
If you took the OTA 4.3 you are Sol. If you still have the MDL bootloader you can Odin the MDL stock image then root and triangle away and then unroot. You will be good to go then.

No, I never had it updated when I bought it from Tmo as Android 4.2.2 . So you're saying with even with the current custom 4.3 Android & custom kernel that I have right now I can Odin the MDL? (Unroot, Root, TriangleAway, unroot?)

Yes. If you never took the OTA and only flashed the mk2 modem you can absolutely Odin the stock MDL ROM and root, triangle away then unroot (in that order) You'll be good to go then. Just make sure you're binary found is at 0 by booting into download mode when you're done.

From what I've read in other threads you cannot downgrade bootloaders so if you took th OTA you can't go back to 4.2. From what I understand it will brick your phone. If you are already 4.3 and rooted you have already voided your warranty. You may as well Odin the stock 4.3 and root again so you can flash other Roms since you are stuck on 4.4.

Whoa, this has got to be one of the most unorganized forums on the internet. LoL, sorry, its just soooo hard to find clear, up to date info, that I had to make a thread here.
I basically decided its time to update my phone and I want to root it, mainly to get battery savings and stop google from running all those apps in the background (who knows what info they are gathering).
Anyways, like the title states,
I'm on Tmobile, with a M919 on 4.3 with MK2, I would like to go to kitkat and root and NOT TRIP KNOX, if possible.
I'd also be interested in custom roms, if possible, like CyanogenMod... But of course, I'd like to keep my warranty, as I've already had to use it once, and I still have 2 whole months left and wifi is acting up (I get a lot of unstable wifi messages recently, didn't check my router yet but my laptop is working fine....)
Your help is appreciated.
Thx
ohh, my wife's phone is on 4.2.2, she is due for an update too, she wants the emoticons so that's one "major" reason to update...
Perhaps I can switch phones with her, and update that one to a rooted 4.4.2 without tripping knox, if possible?? Please point me in the right direction... I also like many of the features that dbombmod rom has, like call recording and more..

cool thanks, I will read up on safe root, but it looks like it may work. So once I'm rooted, I can install any rom right, even the 4.4.2 with knox removed and it would be fine right? And also the NB4 modem as well, and any kernel too?
My wife is hesistant to switch with me now because of the wifi unstable issue I have. I think I may have fixed it by clearing the Wifi Direct and Wifi Direct apps cache and data. Hopefully it is only a software problem, and not a hardware problem.
oyyy, after further reading, this does root the phone, but doesn't unlock the bootloader, and without an unlocked bootloader you cannot install custom roms, but I still didn't read if I can install another modem or another kernel???
what about towelroot? Does that unlock the bootloader?
tried towelroot on 4.3...
didn't work
updated to 4.4.2,
still doesn't work
ughhh
ohhh well, I guess I will switch phones with wife...
Lol. You can still download custom ROMs with a locked bootloader. If you do flash the NB4 modem you will definately trip KNOX. If you flash a non stock kernel you will trip KNOX and if you flash a custom recovery you will trip KNOX.

I finished setting up my old phone for my wife. I "Turned off" many of the apps that are installed that we never use, so her battery should do ok on 4.4.2
I just did towelroot on her phone, and it has instant root access, no reboot required or anything. Root Checker says I have root already. yay. Now I guess I need to update with modded firmware. Is there any particular order I have to install stuff?
Can I start with the rom, then modem, then kernel or is there a particular order I need to install stuff. And what should I use, odin or what?

You can flashbin any order. Some ROMs come with a kernel that they recommend but you can flash a different one if you prefer. If you DL Titanium Backup from the play store you can freeze any unwanted apps completely instead of just turning them off.

Thanks, I searched and found out that TWRP is the way to go. I used flashify to install it and I was able to flash the new rom. Works good. I also got call recording to work, but not with wifi calls, is that something that never worked or its just a bug in my phone? I'm thinking of trying other roms to see if they got call recording with wifi calls, but that would take a lot of time.
I also did install the NB4 modem flash (twice like the instructions said) and its good, got 2 extra bars (but I doubt my signal got any better, they just want you to see more bars)

Hey all. So im usually not in these threads, i own a sprint note3 myself. But my friend has a metropcs s4( SGH-M919N, jfltetmo). And he wants to root but dosent know much about rooting, roms ,and such. I would say im pretty good with these things, ive had a lot of experaince, just not with the s4. So basically i did some research and im putting a mini guide below of my understanding of how to pimp out this phone! If anyone could correct, add-to; and answer some of the questions I had. Thanks Folks!
General Questions
First off. My understanding is T-mobile and metropcs software is NEARLY identical.
1.What is the current version/ name of the latest T-mobile s4 software.
2.What is the current version/ name of the latest metro pcs s4 software.
3.Are they identical, or compatible. Meaning could i odin the latest stock tmobile s4.tar software on metropcs phone, and have everything work properly. (In case i were softbricked)
4. If not could someone please link me to where i could find the official stock metro-pcs..Tars (flashable with odin)
Rooting methods:
1.)This is Chainfires Auto-Root for t-mobile S4 which some have said worked well for them. Thou I have read of issues (loss of wifi- Fails)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005
is this the best most current rooting method for metropcs phone? Again any success or issues?
OR..
2.) Injecting twrp then flashing Update-Supersu
This is the most used rooting method for note3 and it seems fairly universal. Would this likely work for Metropcs S4?
Step 1: Place "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip" on sd card. This is Chainfires flashable root (http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/)
Step 2: Odin twrp-2.7.1.0.tar for tmobile s4 (http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/179)
Step 3: immediately boot into twrp. Flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip.
Reboot: Done
Theoretically this should easily root phone and instal twrp recovery, without changing stock software...thus, no issues. YES?
Unrooting
Again could someone please point me to the correct stock software .tar that I could odin to unroot, un-soft brick the metropcs s4
Custom roms:
I hear that the custom roms for Tmboile and Metropcs are very interchagnale
Obviously the AOSP unified custom roms should be safe to flash without issues. (jflte roms)
(Cm s4 unified nightlies: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=jflte&type=nightly)
BUT:
what about touchwiz based roms. Are there any specifc toucwiz metropcs custom roms to flash. Or can any of the t-mobile toucwiz custom roms be flashed to metropcs phone.
so again. If anyone could give me their thoughts/ideas, and clear up some of the questions i had and point me to best/safest way of working with the metropcs s4. Thanks in advance, sorry i know its a lot of reading: :good:
:cyclops:
4.3 or 4.4.2? I have a Metro Gs4 and I used saferoot on 4.3 with no complications at all. And any TW ROM will work.

thanks for the reply.. but ya i was asking what is the latest official software for the metropcs s4, and what is it called. I havent been able to take a look at the phone yet, so im having to look everything up.
My understanding is that the metro pcs was only upgraded to 4.3 with the name of mk5.
was there a kit-kat update released for metro s4?
1) NB4
2) don't know but I think it does have 4.4.2 update
3) pretty identical but I would not interchange firmwares
4) sammobile.com
Root
1) no issues with me with M919 using that method
2) I wouldn't recommend doing it this way, after 4.3 it doesn't work very well.. It looks like you're looking to flash a ROM, so root isn't even needed, just flash a recovery with Odin and flash ROM.. Although this will trip Knox counter.
Unrooting just flash stock firmware
Custom ROMs: aosp or touchwiz will work without issues.. If WiFi does not work, flash NB4 baseband (safe to flash on M919N)

From what I am told the s4 for Metro is still coming our with 4.3 JB. But once the phone is activated you have to opt out of the update when it asks. I have been treating MK5 just as if it was MK2 and I have not had any issues.

Thank you so much for the Stock firmware! :good:
I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the *seemingly* conflicting responses.
So i got a chance to look at the phone. It is 4.3 Mk5, What is MK2?
So, so far your "saferoot" root method seems to be the safest most compatible root method from what ive read.
thou as far as installing custom recoveries Twrp seems to be the best, but ive read that 4.3 Is now a locked bootloader!???
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544503
that sounds ridiculous. I dont believe its locked. and i should be able to odin the latest version of twrp to the device, right? I know knox has been implemented in 4.3+ but thats no big deal
also about roms:
I know that the actual tmobile S4 did get a kit-kat update (called NB4) the metropcs variant definitely did not
you said that any touchwiz rom would work, as did @serio22 above.
But it seems that they only stock custom roms in these threads are tmobile touchwiz kit-kat roms.
but according to @serio22 above: I should not "interchange firmwares"
So if that is true what touchwiz roms can you flash? they are all tmobile roms
My understanding was I could root, odin twrp. And flash roms. Aosp roms are golden but, i would think that since metropcs even uses tmobile network now, you should be able to flash any tmobile custom rom (even if its kitkat) and have everything functioning... True??
thank you both very much @serio22 and @Kriptik210
and im sorry to be a pain im just genuinely confused, and i really need clarification, i said id have this guys phone figured out by Monday!
Firmware is not the same as ROM, that's why I suggest you flash ROM instead of firmware, any ROM will be ok. Bootloader is not locked I'm sure, Knox bootloader does not mean locked bootloader as many people think. Just Odin twrp and flash your ROM as I said earlier, rooting would be an extra step.

ah that makes sense. Well id still want to root, just to titanium backup his things first, and have a secure stock rooted nandroid backup. Though then just a couple more questions remain :highfive:
So say i were to flash any toucwiz t-mobile kitkat rom Such as.
Insane Kit-kat v9
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2683507
or
Warpdrive
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2682608
The OS would be kit-kat. Would i need to then odin flash a kitkat baseband (modem) as well for working signal. If so how?
Also does the kitkat rom change the bootloader already on phone.
reason being. For the note3 once you update it from JB to kitkat. The bootlaoder is changed. Meaning you CANNOT downgrade even odin flashing the previous version .tar will BRICK
is this the same case? If i flash a tmobile rom (thus upgrading), would i not be able to odin the metropcs 4.3 MK5 stock.tar
OR
would i not be able to simply restore the nandroid stock rooted MK5 backup i made.
Thanks again :highfive:

Bootloader will not update and its not needed because kernels are modified to bypass this "restriction" only thing you need to update is the modem to NB4.. There is a thread already with instructions, just follow it and you'll be good.. And yes you can still flash back to 4.3 stock and restore nandroid because bootloader will not change

Thanks a millions times over good sir! I should now be able to put together the pimpest of phones haha
Its a good feeling when things all come together. Like completing a puzzle!
I've heard that my MK5 bootloader is locked and others say it isn't. Serio explained everything else lol. TWRP is great. XDA doesn't permit saying things are better than another but I use TWRP and I haven't had any issues with 2.6.
