Please allow posters to close their own threads and delete double posts. It's ridiculous not to have this feature!!!
What is so harmful about us closing our own threads?
I think it is beneficial, for example:
1) OP feels harassed: closes thread
2) OP learns that there was already another, more prominent thread of the same issue: closes thread
3) OP wants too closes his upcoming software update but doesn't want to read other's post issues that he has fixed on the next version.
etc...
Why can't we close our own threads? Delete our own posts?
For ***sakes look at these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4120834#post4120834
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535393&highlight=deleted
If you aren't going to implement this then atleast tell us why in the world we can't delete our posts!
Here is my previous thread posted at the wrong forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535157
After reading Mike´s post it is clear that the best and easyest way is to click on the red button asking an experienced Mod to do the action, otherwise it can be a democratic chaos...
Just my opinion.

It sounds obvious that you should be able to delete your own posts. However, it can cause chaos! Once you create a thread you do not own it, particularly if other users have contributed posts to the thread.

I agree, Just because you posted a thread, doesn't mean it's your thread. This is a community with no personal ownership of posts or threads.
mikechannon said:
Deleting the first post in a thread deletes the whole thread. This could be a long running thread with many posts and pages. To allow this thread to suddenly vanish because the OP deletes the first post can upset many contributing users.

However, it's relatively easy to have the odd post removed by clicking on the report post (red triangle) that appears on all posts. All you need do is say something like "please delete my double post" or "delete my post it's in the wrong forum" etc etc

Once again I reinforce Mike's statement. The Mods are here to assist you, please make use of our services.
mikechannon said:
There are also a couple of other fiddly reasons why it's best for a Mod to delete posts - one is that a Mod can also move the post to Trash. You may not know that deleted posts are still visible to Mods and leaving them kicking around forums makes things look very messy to Mods even if other users see a nice tidy board. Another reason not to allow user delete is that a very few users could use this to cover up "provocative posting" or just to cause trouble with other members. (You can imagine for example, that a ROM thread suddenly disappearing because the cook is bored with it could lead to lots of frustration amongst users and extra work for Admin and Mods.)
Just use the report icon or contact a Mod - quick and easy

Just basically report to mods is the summation here.
Got a question about deleting a post:
Once a post is deleted, then all posts after it in the same thread will be changed a post#. E.g, if post#2 is deleted, then post#3 became #2, #4 become #3 etc. But if the original post#3 is cross-linked to another thread using the 'view single post' function. In such a case, will the cross-link url address be updated accordingly?
The link will be to the deleted post, no re-shuffle will occur.
The URL is showpost.php and p=4153097 ("p" is the post number, not the thread number, that will be "t").
Here is one I deleted from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=6
As a moderator, I can see deleted posts. Try that URL above
Dave
In the above case, seems you deleted the whole thread. This is the url you pointed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=6,
And I can not access these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=7
My question is for example in this thread we are talking in,
if you deleted this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4121794&postcount=3.
But I already crosslinked this post (next one to the deleted) with this url: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4132664&postcount=4.
So my above url will become this post, is that right?
BTW, sometimes I can see the contents of deleted post from a google search result.
Edit: Ok, seems I got it, you said no re-shuffle. That means if #3 deleted, , #5 is still #5, so there is no influance on crosslink address of posts. Thanks.
This is a quote from another post i made in another thread. The reason i decided to make this into a thread is because i honestly dont think a lot of people read a very old thread for requests. Please reply with a real opinion.

The admins say this is our forum, why not give us some control? Not mod permissions or admin permissions but our own 'personal' permissions. There's a vb mod called the "Comprehensive Ignore System" it can do these things for users :
users can ignore entire threads. These threads will then not show up in searches, forumdisplay, and "new posts".
if a user puts someone on their ignored list, they stay ignored, meaning their threads will not show up in forum displays, searches, or "new posts".
Users can ignore threads with certain tags.
Users can select to ignore an entire forum, so that they no longer see it, nor do search results that are located in those forums show to the user.
Complete user group control for each of these features.
Admin can also clear a users ignores when editing a user.
Users can review and remove ignores from their UserCP.
Click to collapse
This can give us power over our forum without giving us the power to control others, but control what we see.
Link: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=181626
There's also an addon to the above mod called "Users on ignore list cannot reply to thread" and it can do this:
If a user is on the thread starters ignore list, that user cannot reply to the thread, or quickreply. This of course is bypassed by moderators and admins.
Click to collapse
This will allow developers to ignore other people they see as incompetent and not helpful to the cause in the thread but those uses on the list can still view it.

.☆.☆.☆. Section Rules .☆.☆.☆. - Updated March 29th - PLEASE RE-READ
Further to the pre-existing Dev section rules listed below, a couple of new rules.
Firstly, when starting a new ROM thread, can Devs please start a 'companion' thread in the Q&A section?
In doing so, it makes it much easier to separate genuine feedback (bug reports, fixes etc) from the other crap (thanks, 'downloading now!' and so on).
A couple of recent threads have become inadvertent test grounds for these new, stricter rules:
CM7 T989 Kang with bug fixes
And
Rom skyrocket ics port sgh-t989
And as I'm sure we can all agree, the threads are significantly cleaner which makes it much easier to find the useful information, both for Devs and downloaders alike.
Whilst we're on the subject, I'd like to thank both eugene373 and Racing19969 for having been our unsuspecting guinea pigs in all this.
NB - please only do this for new ROM threads, it's just too much work to try and sift through the hundreds, if not thousands of posts in pre-existing ROM threads and sort between posts that should be in the Dev thread and posts that should be in the companion thread.
With that in mind, I'd ask RDs to consider starting new threads for their next releases instead of updating existing threads, that way the new split system can be implemented from a fresh start.
Secondly, can everyone please be more vigilant in terms of reporting posts that not appropriate for the Dev section?
We Mods can only do so much, we need the help of everyone here - in particular RDs, if you see your ROM threads going off-topic/getting cluttered, please report the post(s) and lock the thread so that it doesn't deteriorate before a Mod has a chance to intervene.
Hopefully, with everyone doing their bit we can get this section tidied up.
☞ [ READ ME 1st ] .☆.☆.☆. Section Rules .☆.☆.☆.

12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence you created the work then in the spirit of sharing all work will remain posted on the forums.

Sorry guys I don't know where to post such topics.

To contact XDA staff, you don't need to make a post but just move your mouse and point to the list of moderators on top of every forum header to PM them directly also this can be done by clicking the orange triangle on every post title header on your right corner.
2) To understand posting limit , read this
5 minute restrictions, is due to some people who register on web sites ( any web site including XDA) just to advertise their product, sex trade or call girls services) they normally use bots ( spam bots, which automates their spamming) so you can have numerous threads created by a spammer in a forum or many forums within five minutes, and to try and stop them will be fruitless as they just joined to do it (spam) and quit the forum. They will register again once banned using another name and do it again, so imagine the life of moderator deleting the spam, can be hell indeeed, when this restriction is not practiced, although it will affect legitimate junior members, it cannot be helped till you are a member ( meaning proven as a credible person and valuable member of this community after the initial 10 posts)
3) regarding XDA app you need to post here read or search that thread before posting , might help you understand ho many times such issues had been reported or resolved.

KNOWN ISSUES as of 12/3 (we're working on these!):
Some threads/posts may be missing. We imported missing threads, some first posts missing still.
Need to launch new XDA app asap. All current apps are broken like Tapatalk and XDA app. Use the browser instead for now plz (update: 12/7-8/20 target launch)
In-thread search not working (update: 12/4/20 should be fixed)
More stuff (we're reading every post!)

For login issues... use the "Forgot password" to reset your password. If you do not know your email address or it is no longer active, we will work on a way of getting access restored.
If Google login does not work, you can reset your password and reassociate (called "Connect Account") your Google account to allow login.

We're excited to welcome you to the new version of the XDA Forums, which is now based on XenForo software instead of vBulletin. If you're not familiar, XenForo is a modern forum platform with a focus on speed, sharing, and overall fluidity. TLDR: we long ago outgrew vBulletin and we wanted to make a huge upgrade.
Things are different! We know it will take some time for everyone to adjust to the new forums, and we ask for your patience as we work out bugs and issues to make the XDA 2021 forums as familiar as possible. One fun thing to try: change templates in the bottom left corner. We have a few to choose from and might add more. Whether you like a dark or light look, or if you want to see classic XDA colors from a decade ago , we have you covered.
Use this thread to report bugs or ask questions. Our partner firm, Audentio, which designed the forums, might respond on our behalf within this thread.
Thank you for your continued support of XDA, and we hope you enjoy XDA 2021! ✌

Known Bugs/Regressions:
Some posts (former DevDB OPs, at least) can't be edited unless user disables the WYSIWYG editor and uses BBCODE instead. Fixed 12/09 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-115#post-84076621
All users have enforced signature length and link limits, which should be higher/removed, at least for advanced forum users. Fixed 12/20 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-135#post-84140273 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-135#post-84141915
Advanced forum user max title length is too short, truncating them (e.g. "Senior Recognized Developer / Recognized Contribut").
Long forum names are truncated (e.g. "Android Software and Hacking General [Developers O").
Thanks/Likes counts are reduced for most users, sometimes dramatically, seemingly from Aug 29 - Dec 2; possibly related to (7).
Various old forum emojis aren't mapped to new unicode ones, and ones in old posts that do exist (e.g. :cowboy:) don't display.
Some users have reported their OPs and/or attachments reverting to older versions; possibly related to (1). Fixed 12/09 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-115#post-84076621
Broken redirects from old links for many threads/posts.
Disabling Alert in Preferences forces Mobile App Push enabled, one should be able to disable both.
Users who were Senior Members are now only Members, as though the threshold is different. Fixed 12/09 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/page-115#post-84076615
"Unfurl"ed URL links to posts sometimes show a preview of the OP instead of the correct post (e.g. [URL unfurl="true"]https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/welcome-to-xda-2021.4197018/post-84073623[/URL]

I know you guys are probably still working out the bugs, but so far the forum is super slow. It take 20 to 30 seconds to load a page. And yes, my Internet works fine with all other sites at the same time so I know it's not my computer, browser or Internet connection.
Also, for some reason, I can't load page 2 of threads and it seems like some recent posts were not migrated over?
Question. What's this mean for the XDA Android app? Not able to login at the moment. Plans for updating it I take it?
Where is the Search Thread box? I used it all the time! Edit: When using the top of page Search box here is a drop-down menu option to search this thread but it's no working. Edit 2: It has been fixed!
How can you add a title to a post since Advanced is gone?
No option to not include your signature in some posts & in others not like in Advanced before the migration?
Most Thanked posts in the thread (liked) in the right sidebar is gone?
***
Hopefully the site is still settling in after the migration. I know this can take time. Looking forward to continue here on the new platform and hope all the great experiences of old times remain the same and new ones are added.
I would second the earlier comment about the site being slow but again i probably answered my own question in the first sentence i typed.
it's slow, but the cost of change need some time, imagine you are merge years to a new platform..
it's not easy for sure, and can't be done in one day.
I assume that everyone can already tell but it really is very slow. I hope that it can be fixed!
This is dreadfully slow, 20-30+ seconds to load a single page.
Trying to go to the *last* page of a thread causes it to continuously go to the first page of the thread, and "jump to new" is even more broken, listing "recent" posts but labeling each one as "#1" and then mixing in "first page" posts as well.
Evident for me on this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...oid-auto-use-torque-with-androidauto.3657805/
Update: while we're back online, we know the forums are slow. We're actively working to fix some database issues that are causing the slowness. Thanks for your patience.
The site looks great! Thank you for all your hard work on this! I am sure you will get all the bugs worked out soon
Small bug: It seems I can no longer moderate my XDA Community App forum. Is this on the list of things to fix?
