Moded stock rom VS custom rom - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, i'll get a GN2 soon, what is better for a good battery life and a good perfomance?
Modded stock rom or custom rom ?
I mean touchwiz rom, or aosp based roms ?

AOSP will most likely be faster and more fluent but only TouchWiz has some functionality concerning stylus (S-pen)...

I think i will not really use spen.. What is more battery friendly between AOSP and TW?

Tw is more battery friendly than aosp but I know some people on beanstalk have being saying that the rom is just as battery friendly.

best rom for galaxy s3?

Hi im currently using the frosty jellybean v7 rom for my gs3. But i really dislike the battery life for this rom.
Im looking for a good rom, touch wiz or not. With a good battery life and great features in a most stable manner. Also, if there is one that can wifi tether t mobile, than let me know of my options. Also if possible, is there a non touchwiz rom with actual touchwiz features like svoice or motion/nfc?
Thanks in advance.
Best advice is just to try each one. You're going to get a different answer from everyone and only you know exactly what you want. That being said, it's AOKP for me.

There's quite a few AOSP/CM based ROMS in the original development section if you want to stay on JB but try something new and without Touchwiz. Battery life is decent too especially cuz alot of the Samsung bloat isnt running.
AOSP Roms use android's built in Wifi Tether. Not sure if this is compatible with how T-mobile's tethering plan works as I'm on a Canadian variant. NFC is available on these roms as well but SBeam is not.
As for the Touchwiz features, some of them can be mimicked with apps though how I'm not sure how effective or faithful these apps are. Try googling the name of the feature and add "Aosp" or "Galaxy nexus" to the search to see if there is a stock version of that feature

AOSP or TouchWiz Based?

Just a simple thing. Are you running an AOSP based rom, or as TouchWiz based Rom?

At the moment, I'm running Kobridge's ROM for the battery life (need it for school). I probably will be switching back to AOKP 4.2 soon though...both of these ROMs are fantastic, in my opinion.
I'm on Dastins Wild for the Night Cm10.1. Great rom in my opinion!

I get about 24 hours out of CM 10.1 with 2 hours of screen time. So battery life is pretty good.

Stock s3 camera app on custom rom

Is there a way to install the stock camera app on a custom rom? My gf loves the stock camera but I feel her phone would run more smoothly with a custom rom.

By custom do you mean AOSP/AOKP? Because no it won't work. The TW camera needs TW framework.
Ever consider a stock based ROM that has been debloated and tweaked?

I've used embryo on my skyrocket and liked it a lot but haven't seen embryo for the s3. Is there a stock based rom that u would recommend as far as stability and performance? I know the best roms are banned but I'm just asking for an opinion on where I should start.
Thanks for the quick reply!

No embryo ROM here that I've seen.
What do you mean by the best ROMs are banned?
S3Rx by loserskater seems to be pretty good from what I've read. For myself I've mainly been running blandroid by danvdh and idyar and it's been rock solid / great battery life.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

4.1.2 vs 4.2.2

Is a 4.1.2 slower than a4.2.2 ROM?

That's a question that is hard to quantify really. Yes, 4.2.2 has a tendency to be faster but its also not bogged down by TouchWiz either and most of the other bloat is gone from the ROMs as well. Its not really a fair comparison especially when you factor in that 4.2.2 uses 3.4 kernels and 4.1.2 does not.
Slightly, I don't feel it's very noticeable tbh. I am speaking from custom 4.1.2 Roms though.
Any custom rom should blow out non rooted stock imo. Regardless if it's touchwiz based or AOSP. These custom roms are debloated and tweaked for better performance.
I was absolutely happy with Touchwiz Roms. I only went to AOSP roms cause I wanted to try something new.
The only thing I miss are the extra camera features from touchwiz. Other than that, AOSP roms offer a lot for you to play around with.

[POLL] Touchwiz-based ROMs vs. AOSP-based ROMs

Which do you prefer?
Both. Hybrid that is.

For whatever reason, I get significantly better battery life using tw roms vs aosp. I prefer the look of aosp though. Battery life is winning the battle right now and I'm on TW
I have always preferred an aosp rom but they do not always offer all the goodies.. like mhl, or t-mobile wifi calling for example.. definitely always had better battery life for me, more free ram etc..

I dunno. That's a tough one. They both have their pros and cons. I can't honestly say that I think one is better than the other. If I had a low end device that might be a different story. I've been sticking with TW lately.
Ever since the s3 I've been sticking to tw since they offer some goodies that i find convenient.. And also the battery life has been way better for me

TouchWiz + rovo89s Xposed framework + one of the many tweaked kernels = better than any AOSP rom I've used. Just my own preference though ^_^

After trying pretty much every ROM compatible with my TMO S4, I keep coming back to the TMO TW ROMs. Most importantly, you can't get wi-fi calling any other way. But, as Slim TW ROMs have become more common and my comfort level with making changes has risen, I have given up the idea of dual booting with an ASOP/GE/MIUI/etc. ROM as my daily driver & TW for wi-fi calling, and am now back to focusing on getting as stripped-down a TW as possible. I care nothing for eye candy and just want the quickest & most stable setup, and TW has fit the bill best for me.
TW (by a slight margin)
I prefer TW because of the camera
AOSP is still very snappy but TW is catching up to that standard (for me)
I use stock TW unrooted 4.3 btw
For me it depends on what is available at the time. Right now I've got the latest 4.3.1 cyanogenmod nightly:

AOSP all the way, I hate touchwiz it's so ugly.
TouchWiz seems to have much better battery life. I do prefer stock because I hate a lot of extra cruft but if that can be removed, it's not so bad.
Plus Wi-Fi calling is awesome for battery life.
I know a certain someone has gotten wifi calling to work on aosp.. Still waiting to get a hold of our myself tho..

On the S4 AOSP?
I know it works on AOSP for the HTC One, but if you know someone who has it working on the S4 AOSP roms, you should advise that person that there is a considerable bounty built up of people willing to click the donate button a few times for a working installable Wifi Calling APK.
interesting to read the comments. I've been going back and forth between TW and AOSP ROMS. Is having the newest Android release the only major advantage of AOSP over TW? I don't think the look of AOSP is a valid reason since you can install launchers (i.e. Nova Launcher) to get the AOSP look on a TW ROM.

exactly.. I love aosp but im using tw with nova. I gotta have battery life
what changes does samsung make kernel side? Are the improvements made to the asop kernel? It does seem like TW has better battery life...
also if someone has wifi calling ported... why is this staying in the shadows??
I like cm 10.2 stable, my daily driver, but when wicked v9 comes out, I'm going to be jumping on that real quick.

Am I reading this correctly? A 4.4 GE with wifi calling exists?
