VLC updated now Kitkat friendly - Nexus 7 (2013) Themes and Apps

version 0.1.4 now out fixes the "crash on open" problem... I was missing my VLC .... great app..

ART or Dalvik?

At least it works on Dalvik. Gre^D^D^DBest video player ever.
US residentials need to download it from web, probably due to license issues.

[Q] Real Player for Android - Updated

Hello Everyone,
Did anyone tried the newly updated Real Player for Android ? Please share your experience.
A good player but it is still beta (at least for me in the market). Sometimes it force closed 1 time and eats a lot of resources. I still prefer Winamp for music and rockplayer for videos. But if some bugs will be fixed, it will be a good all in one player.

PLEX Media Player Playback Issue

Is anyone running the Plex Media Player successfully on the A100?
I am on the latest 1.12 ICS leak and when attempting to play a TV show from my library over my LAN I receive the following:
"We're sorry but there was a problem attempting to play 'TV Show name here'
There was a problem with media playback."
For a song I receive:
"We're sorry but there was a problem attempting to play 'song name here'
An error occurred (error 0x 17: UNKNOWN)"
I can connect to the server just fine and the content shows up as expected but playing the media results in the above errors.
I have tried all different combinations in the settings and think this may be an ICS issue. Unfortunately I never tried it on HC before I upgraded so I can't be sure if its the device or the android version.
I pretty sure it's not a codec issue because the content plays fine in PLEX on my other android devices and I believe the app itself installs the codecs.
Anyone have it working on either HC or ICS?
Thanks!
Well I guess nobody use this application?
As an update I have researched the issue further and through the PLEX forum's have determined that ICS Rom's in general ARE experiencing problems with this app. Some users are saying that if the device has received an "official" ICS (Ex. Galaxy Nexus, Moto Xoom, Etc.) that the application is working fine while users on "custom" ICS rom's are having difficulty.
The general belief is that the official ICS Rom's offer built in hardware acceleration and the custom rom's do not because they were not built from the official source.
This worries me because the ICS we are using is a leak of the official and I would assume hardware acceleration was already incorporated. Perhaps not and they will add it last minute prior to the official release but I'm doubtful.
Again, if anybody uses this app, posting your experience would be appreciated.
I have never even heard of this app before, try using more widely known/supported apps like MX video player, TTPod, and PowerAMP.

Thanks for the advice however PLEX is way more than just a "player". It is a complete media content system that is running throughout my house. It consists of two separate applications. One is a media manager and the other is the "player". Players can run on all different platforms and access the media being served up from the manager.
I currently run the players on a minimum of 6 different devices. Using a simple player like you have referenced (no matter how good they may be) is not an option for me.
I either need to downgrade to HC or wait (and hope) that the official ICS release will fix this issue. Or use another tablet.
For those interested see this LINK. Unfortunately the Android App is not free but the local media manager and players for Linux, MAC and windows are free.
Hi, did you manage to make things work with Plex?
I can not even log in the frakking server...lol
At first I thought Firewall was playing around after an update, but even diable was not able to log.
Any ideas? It is a really lovely app that one.
Do you know any other with similar results?
Tks brother!
It works fine on Cyanogen. Once I went to that ROM all issues disappeared.
Yes

Yes. I was having the same error as you and many other ICS users. There was an update to the server this week, and now it works. I am on stock 4.03.

DTS Audio for android == LAWSUIT

DTS audio *used* to work outofthebox in both DicePlayer (my old favorite), and in MX Player (my new fav), but both of them REMOVED the dts codec a few months ago apparently because of the threat of lawsuits from using unlicensed code.
(UPDATE: DicePlayer dev juami posted below that they were refused even the option to buy a license for DTS, because they prefer to deal with the big industry players instead; also, DicePlayer can still play dts IF you install an external codec plug-in)
Just curious what most people are doing out there in order to play their mkv videos with the very common DTS audio track (vs the less common AAC/MP3/etc audio tracks). Re-encoding phone-friendly versions with HandBrake; using an old app with DTS support; using a PAID app that paid the licensing fee (can't find one), or, something else...
EDIT: I'm going to keep a list here of players that are known to support DTS or not:
DTS IS SUPPORTED OTTB (for now):
VLC Beta - (h/w 1080p decode works! - BEST option, but, the app must be sideloaded, since it shows as incompatible with the US S3 in the Play store. See Time_Zone's post below for the attached VLC apk. Thanks!)
BS Player - (s/w ONLY (eats battery): h/w mode always falls back to s/w mode, but dts is ok. 720p s/w == ok; 1080p s/w == CPU can't keep up; too choppy)
Rock Player - (s/w ONLY (eats battery): no DTS when in h/w video playback mode, and s/w playback is blocky crap. Also, the app fails to playback a video when sent a video intent to play from another app)
DTS NOT SUPPORTED:
Video Player default - (Touchwiz, AOSP (CM10, AOKP, ...))
MX Player - (updated versions removed codec; google for old apk version)
Dice Player - (updated versions removed codec; google for old apk version (2.0.6), or try searching XDA for external plug-in support instead.)

Awesome. I'll give it try, even through from what I've read the beta is still very buggy & laggy.
Wonder how long they'll "get away with it" before removing DTS support too.
EDIT: VLC beta is currently incompatible with the US SGS3
FWIW, BS Player is one of the few I've found that can handle DTS Audio, however, it fails to playback do h/w accelerated playback of the video, and falls back to s/w, so it's choppy with 720p, and fails with 1080p

Whoa! That works! Wonder why the Play store shows it as incompatible...
So, after enabling h/w acceleration (disabled by default), my 720p & 1080p vids play without a hiccup. Smooth video & crisp dts audio. I'm not seeing all the bugs that are warned about. Thanks man.
If I try to skip ahead or behind off a cifs mount across network the audio goes out of synch... Thats the only bug I have seen.

Diceplayer is not discontinued. ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.a&hl=en )
and there are a way to enable un-supported codec
search "xda diceplayer dts"

The impression I got is that DicePlayer switched from AdSupported&Paid versions to DonationWare in preparation of becoming AbandonWare. In any case, they removed DTS, so it's out of the running, and from the comments I read about the external dts workaround you mentioned: it doesn't work as well. VLC wins for now. Thanks, though.
For myself I have a backed up apk of the last MX Player to ahve DTS and I simply install that on new devices.

That is your impression. but I am working for upgrading diceplayer. We do not adandon diceplayer. I am very upset and feel that I should really adondon diceplayer. Why do I do bothering jobs like supporting JB and fixing bugs and adding external codec features.
removing DTS is another problems. MX also remove DTS. we have same situations.
did you copy libffmpeg.so to /sdcard ( root of internal storage memory ). and enable custom plug-in and restart diceplayer?

I didn't realize you were one of the DicePlayer devs when I replied. So, sorry 'bout sounding as if I was bashing DicePlayer.
I used your app for over a year mainly because it was fast, played just about everything I threw at it, and because it was and still is the only player (afaik) that can browse & directly stream from windows network shares (without having to first mount samba/cifs in a separate app). It was just the loss of DTS and the (false) impression of it becoming abandonware that made me leave it.
Mind if I ask how much the lawyers were asking for a DTS licensing fee? And, how is it that VLC and others are getting away with it?
DTS deny to sell thier products to sw player makers.
We already contact them to buy license. But they refuse to sell.
They want to sell DTS license to hw vendor like samsung.
And Samsung don't want to buy to put it in their hardware... don't they know that make their handset sells even faster??
Trying out to video on Galaxy S 3 Jelly Bean (Omega V14)
Dice Player - Error prompt "Video playback Sorry, this video cannot be played." just by starting the app
MX Player - 1.6F show version not supported and close
VLC Player - Software mode playback on some videos ok, enable hardware with have choppy videos
Not sure is upgrading to JB worth it...

I see no Omega ROM in the dev forum... and when I google it, it says it's still ICS, not JB.
Anyhoo, VLC Player has been great for me, and it's all I use now since it plays everything I throw at it (like DicePlayer used to). My only minor gripe with it is that it's sometimes herkyjerky in the first 3 seconds of video before it 'catches up', so I can never see the first few seconds of some videos.

If rom is CyanogenMod ,ASOP/AOKP they won't have samsung media codecs. That's why hardware acceleration not working.
Flash samsung stock based rom with proper kernel i recommend this ktoonsez sammy kernel . And video playback will work properly.
very interesting thread, i hope mx player will be compatible with DTS audio in near future.
MX won't be compatible cause of the mentioned legal issues, but they added support for custom ffmpeg builds, which eventually might help adding DTS support back... if someone does it ofc.
might try Dice player again with the dts tweak, but i have been using vplayer for videos with DTS. Free in the play store and works rather well.
Well just like last time Dice player freezes and lags, with certain MKV files such as anime. BS Player is by far the best player around and love the LAN features, just wish the UI was cleaner.

[Q] [CM12] [Desire 816] Podcasts not playing correctly on any apps.

Hello, I am having a problem playing podcasts. When I start a podcast it plays for a few seconds, then the sound cuts out but the playback continues and silent seconds go by. This happens in Podcast Addict, Podcast Republic, and happens in Apollo with downloaded podcasts as well. I don't really know why this is happening and I haven't found any way to troubleshoot the problem. Other audio/video streaming services such as Spotify, Netflix, and Youtube work perfectly. The only problems I am having with playback is with podcasts, it doesn't matter which app I use to play it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix my problem?

Hello, and welcome to XDA! I asked the moderator to move your thread to make user-generated answers available
The build you are using is experimental and has battery drain issues. Check the bugs list. Some of the framework modules and APIs conflict with each other, and some third-party apps like the ones you are using don't fully have Lollipop support yet
I recommend switching to KitKat until there is a more stable and usable ROM. I checked out the ROM thread for the version you are using and the ROM is still in the Alpha testing stage. Not even beta. Along with alpha comes unstable.
I think that a lot of noobs (I'm not saying you are one) have issues with trying to get the latest and greatest, however the latest and greatest doesn't always work properly.
Best move: Switch to KitKat.
Hope that helps, and don't forget to use the Thanks! button.

Android Auto, in order to use Rocket Player, have to use Google Play Music first

Half question, half observation, and half speculation. That's three halves, only two of which make 100% but two out of three ain't bad.
On the completely stock but rooted 8.0 and also on the latest 8.0-based Leedroid ROM on a U.S. Unlocked HTC 10 (with latest TWRP and latest compatible SuperSU), playing music through Rocket Player on Android Auto in my 2017 Chevy Impala requires me to first load Google Play Music, play just for a moment, and then I can pause (or leave alone, doesn't matter) and switch back to Rocket Player and hit play, and it'll play just fine (it'll automatically pause Google Play Music if I hadn't already).
It's consistent - every single time (just in case "consistent" wasn't clear enough LOL). I haven't tried any AOSP/CM-based ROM, older or newer. I'm looking to keep all regular phone and text functionality so that rules out beta versions of AOSiP 8.x. Once I stop the car and restart, I have to go through the same workaround again to use Rocket Player.
With both my wife's and my Google Pixels (hers the XL 128 GB and mine, unfortunately so far, the regular Pixel 32 GB), Rocket Player works immediately.
I have done searching and reading, both through Google searching and searching specifically in the XDA Q&A and Guide/Discussion sections. Although I've seen other problems I haven't specifically found this one mentioned.
Weird! If anyone has any ideas other than switching to Google Play Music, please let me know. FYI, I've also tried disabling Google Play Music, which of course only made it so that I can't use the workaround I found, and I do plan on looking into what other music players support both Android Auto and ReplayGain. If anyone has any suggestions for a music player that fit those two requirements besides Rocket Player, I'd appreciate those suggestions as well.
Thanks!
Supports both ReplayGain and Android Auto:
Rocket Player, but with the caveat on stock HTC 10 Oreo and latest Oreo Leedroid that each time I want to use Rocket Player, I have to temporarily start playing with Google Play Music first. This problem doesn't happen on the Google Pixel with Rocket Player.
I also just noticed that the description of both the free Rocket Player and paid Rocket Player unlocker don't even mention the Android Auto feature which it most definitely does support, so perhaps I should look at all music players that do mention ReplayGain but don't mention Android Auto.
GoneMAD, description only mentions ReplayGain but I happened to notice a review in the Play Store that mentions how good it's Android Auto capability works. I don't understand why these media player authors wouldn't tout their player's Android Auto compatibility if they have it. I'll try it and report back.
Update: GoneMAD seems to have no issue on the HTC 10, I can go straight to playing in GoneMAD without playing using Google Play Music first. Since testing for an hour or so, repeatedly, I disabled the Google Play Music and Rocket Player apps, and I'll test GoneMAD again over the next few days and/or a week before I decide to buy the unlocked version from this 14-day trial version.
Those that seem to support ReplayGain but not Android Auto (haven't tried Neutron so don't absolutely know that it doesn't support Android Auto):
PowerAmp (public beta 703 in Play Store)
Neutron
Those that seem to support Android Auto but not ReplayGain (I have not actually tested any but Google Play Music, but the description of the others don't mention ReplayGain):
Google Play Music
Pulsar
MD Player
Doesn't seem to support either ReplayGain or Android Auto (haven't tried any, but nothing in the description about those features):
doubleTwist
BlackPlayer (free or paid)
Equalizer
Shuttle
Shuttle+
Musixmatch
Try Poweramp beta.

Thanks, Mate. I own PowerAmp so that's a great suggestion. I'll update if it helps alleviate the issue.
Update: Unfortunately, PowerAmp Beta doesn't support Android Auto. Google Play Music and Rocket Player are still the only media players that show up as available to Android Auto. Maybe someday, eh?
Update 2: Or maybe the Beta version of PowerAmp that's in the Play Store (build 703) isn't the latest Beta that's available. You see, I was already signed up as a beta user for PowerAmp through the Play Store, but it sounds as if there's a closed beta version available, and that they're shooting for another beta version in April, although I can't tell if it's planned that it will be a more public beta or still closed beta. The beta forum for PowerAmp doesn't mention having Android Auto capability, so I'm not too optimistic it will be included anytime soon.
Update 3: Check the OP for how I've changed it - I'm going to test GoneMAD to see how it works. It appears that it's common for music apps to not mention in their (even sometimes lengthy) descriptions that they're compatible with Android Auto. Some definitely aren't compatible, like PowerAmp and Neutron, but if GoneMAD doesn't work sufficiently well, I'll revisit others that mention ReplayGain but don't mention Android Auto, in case they secretly do support Android Auto.
I'll probably turn this thread into a Discussion/Guide thread (moving to that section) once I solve my issue, assuming I do, so people can know what apps support Android Auto without trial and error.
