MODEM][FLASHABLE] MK5 Virgin Mobile/Boost Modem
Please make sure you thank @CNexus the next time you see him, because without him it would be much later before this got out. The guy’s a genius, and a huge help whenever I get stuck. So thanks!
Just a notice: Modems do not contain Knox, this is no different. It is safe to flash, so please don’t ask if it will install Knox. Now you know!

JD, thanks for all your modem zips, I like to keep a folder of your zips for VM modems and a folder of the Sprint ones from CNexus on my phone for easy switching on the fly. All work like a charm!
P.S. I'm struckn from over at Android Forums, thanks again for all you do!
Thanks to everyone who made this happen
is there a specific set of APNs that are best utilized by this modem?
I get improved reception for calls and texts in my house (which has horrible service) however MMS is non-existent and data takes a while to connect.
I'm a VM user btw

This is a completely stock modem, and I have not messed with any apn settings. Have you tried other modems? Maybe MK3, MG2, MD7, or heck, I've even heard some guys having success with LJ7. And when you first flashed, did you run the reset activation by running ##72786# on your dialer? And updating prl and profile? Just spit-balling here...hope something sticks

It's a Virgin Mobile / Boost Mobile modem, but the version in the OP works on the Sprint S3. Keep in mind, with modems YMMV.

Thanks JD you saved my life!
Thanks. This modem works very well for me. The MK3 was very slow to connect, would drop connections and was slow. The MK5 connects very quickly, is stable and is quite fast even on 3G.
It Worked!!
OMG THANK U TOOK ME A WEEK TO FIND THE PROBLEM.... and it was just right in front of me!!!!

You should have 4g LTE if you have it in your area. Did you check to see if there is lte coverage for your carrier? It is different from 4g, so it might be worth checking. Additionally, if that's not it, have you tried reactivating everything after initial flash? Try running ##72786# from your dialer, and let it run through activation. That might help. I remember when I first flashed MK5 it took forever and several activations to finally get 4g

Correct. Modems have nothing to do with bootloaders, even though they use the same letter/number system for naming. Anybody on Sprint or Virgin Mobile or Boost can use the modems from all previous builds for any of these phones interchangeably as well--both MG2 and MK5 from VM/Boost have been reported to work well on Sprint phones, and I can confirm personally that the Sprint modems like MK3 and MD4 run fine on Virgin.

Hello everyone,
I bought a T-Mobile S3 and I'm in Canada with Mobilicity. My question is, can i flash the Mobilicity rom on to the T-Mobile S3 without problems?
Thank you
You can flash T-Mobile roms.
But, you can't flash T-Mobile radios.
Just make sure the Rom you are flashing doesn't change your radio
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Sorry, I should clarify. I'm only planning to flash stock Mobilicity (a different carrier) roms on to the T-Mobile S3. Do stock roms change the radio?
That should be fine. We just see people doing it the other way a lot more.
Just do a backup before you start flashing and you should be ok.

Great, thanks. So flashing the stock or pre-rooted roms found in this section won't change the modem?
You probably won't be able to do this. I'm assuming you're talking about Odin flashing the mobilicity fw, correct? You can try it but it'll fail its device check at the beginning.
Flashing the fw, if successful, will flash the modem too. Is the phone currently working as its supposed to on their network?
If you flash a custom rom, it will not include the modem. But there are no roms based off any of the T999V firmwares that I'm aware of.
Out of curiosity, is there a particular reason you want or need to do this?

Thanks Doc,
Yes, I am talking about flashing with Odin and Mobilicity stock fw. The reason I want to do this is because the T-Mobile variant isn't able to display the added language I want, as opposed to the Canadian variant. I am still new to all this and just figured the lack of language support is from T-Mobile's rom. I've tested a Canadian S3 (i747M) and the language I want is supported correctly. Everything about the phone works fine, just need the additional language support. So I thought maybe if I flash the Mobilicity rom with its CSC on to the T-Mobile phone, I would be able to display the languages. This is all based on my current understand of how the phone works. If you can enlighten me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Im pretty sure you're correct that it'll get you the language support.
I'm wondering though if its something that could be enabled or added to the current firmware you have. If it can be it'd probably be easier than trying to get the T999V fw onto the phone. I've never really messed with any kind of language support though. Maybe someone else can answer this part of it.
If not ill try to see if there's a way to flash the fw you want to use without having to run it through the kitchen.
I'm thinking that it may be included in our stock fw already and just hidden/disabled. If so it may be possible to enable the option by editing one of the CSC files like feature.xml. no ifea if that's possible, just a thought.
Are you currently rooted?

Yes, I am currently rooted (thanks to your thread with the pre-rooted stock fw) on the T-Mobile's latest fw. I tried using the app morelocale 2 to enable additional language support and another app (created by wanam - link provided at the bottom) found on xda that displays languages that are hidden in the menu to be selected. I've also tried using root explorer and going in to the language.xml file and editing it to support more languages. All these methods only provide partial success as some content is displayed in the desired language while a lot of content isn't (menus etc). As I've said before, I tried these methods on both the US and Canadian variants, and the Canadian phone displays 'everything' in the selected language. I've read somewhere on xda that the US variants doesn't support many languages and thus lead me to the idea of flashing Canadian roms on to the phone. But now that I've learnt that flashing stock fw will change the modem, I have to be sure first whether that will affect my phone and my carrier. And if anyone is interested, the language I'm trying to add is Chinese. It just seems weird to me that such a big market is excluded on the US variants.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1925831
I think they were expecting that most people who speak chinese would be getting the international version. Probably didn't want to mess with languages that only a few people would want to have on the US variants. Just a guess.
If you are able to flash the firmware you want, it will flash the modem as stated, but you can always just flash back to whichever you are using now. I've got a thread stickied in development with all modems.
Something I had been thinking about doing too was making a deodexed, roooted, base rom from the T999V fw. Hadn't decided yet if it'd actually be needed by enough people to be worthwhile. If there's not a good way to flash the fw, ill probably go ahead with it.
I was thinking, Mobile Odin may be able to flash the fw for you. Not sure, but its worth a shot (and you can exclude the modem from the flash).
If you get the paid version it'll inject root for you, if using free version flash the root66 fw. Ill post the link to it in a min.

If you've edited your build.prop for google wallet or changed the device name/model, DO NOT use Mobile Odin! It'll brick your device.
Mobile Odin thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
You'll need the flash kernel from post 8:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22234918&postcount=8
Make sure you download the correct one!
MobileODIN_FlashKernel_T999-v2.0.apk
Install mobile odin first, then the flash kernel.
When you run it press Choose File and select the fw you downloaded. Then towards the top press modem, then where it asks internal or external sd, choose clear. Do the same for recovery if you wish.
Then flash firmware!
That's it!
Let me know if it works or not, or if you prefer not to use it.

Agreed. Generally, I think people who speak Chinese would get the international version I guess. But I thought the international model doesn't support the AWS 3G bands T-Mobile is using? Really no choice but to get the T999.
Sorry I'm a little confused. Using MobileOdin, I should try to flash to Mobilicity's rom and then flash the modem back to T-Mobile's? And the flash kernel, what is that for? Is it something needed to use MobileOdin free and Pro?
Thanks for the help so far Doc. Greatly appreciated.

You have to manually install the flash kernel for the free version. Pro version does it automatically. Basically its a temporary kernel that M.O. uses in place of recovery and kernel to flash things locally on device.
With mobile odin, you'd flash the root66 firmware. But one of the great things about it is you can then de-select parts of it such as the modem. This way it'll flash everything but not touch your current modem or whatever else you de-select.
Hope that makes sense.

Awesome, thanks for the clarification. I think I'll try that.
Cool, let me know if it goes. If not I've started building a rom from the T999V firmware, but I've got to leave and probably won't have it up till late tonight.

So I went ahead and used Mobile Odin to flash the 66root Mobilicity fw and excluded the modem. Had a bit of a scare when I got stuck at the Samsung logo but I just booted into recovery and cleared data and cache and gave it some time to start up again. Everything is great. It displayed Chinese flawlessly (built-in apps, menus etc). The only other thing that changed was the cellular data indicator. On T-Mobile rom I've only seen 4G displayed. After the flash, it displays 3G and when I open a browser or do anything requiring data, it changes to H+. I don't know what kind of effects may result from this but seeing as how 4G just meant H+ anyways in this case, I don't think I need to worry. However, only time will tell whether the flash was 100% compatible. I can't thank you enough Doc. I was banging my head against the wall for the last week thinking I should have just bought a Canadian version of the S3 but with your help I was able to have what I wanted. Now... if only 4.1.1 was released for Mobilicity... sucks to have to downgrade from JB to ICS.
Also a side note... comparing the roms from the different carriers, T-Mobile sure has a crap load of bloatware compared to Rogers and Mobilicity.
I'm on videotron, T999V
the H+ stands for HSPDA+ which is what 4G actually is .. 3G+
the T999(V) runs on the AWS spectrum and currently there is no carrier supplying more than 4G .. altho tmobile claims that will have LTE over AWS in 2013
welcome to the wonderful world of the Canadian small 3, bloatware free, language enhanced, stock roms lol
I am curious.. when you going into More Settings, Tethering ... can you run the native tethering and get screens like this ??

That's awesome! I'm glad to know Mobile Odin will do this!
As mentioned, the change in what it shows your connection as is normal. You now have it the way it should be in fact. Tmobile changed it to always show 4G to go along with their advertising. If they let it show H+ or 3G it'd be harder to make the claims they do.
On the bright side, rumor has it you guys should all be getting JB in the next few weeks. So at least you know its coming. Personally, I found nothing wrong with ICS. There's not a lot you'll probably miss and the lack of bloat may actually help make up for it.
Sorry I forgot to mention that if you go backwards you will have to do a data wipe.
Glad I could help out man! Enjoy!

Id imagine so, as long as Mobilicity allows it. I don't think there's very much different between the 3 carriers builds. Probably some csc stuff is all. But I may be very wrong here!

Ya, most 4G is just rebranded H+ and not true 4G like LTE. I figured it was just a rom specific thing to choose what to display, 4G or H+ because even with the Rogers phone, it chose to display 4G when not using LTE. The only thing that set off my concern was that the phone just didn't stay connected to H+. It toggles back to 3G when I'm idle or not using data requiring apps. Rogers just got JB 2 days ago. Seeing as Mobilicity is a smaller company it might take a while.... :crying: but you're right, not missing out on that much.
@cLogic:
Confirmed that I get the same screens as you do for tethering.
You are experiencing normal operation. It always has done this you just never saw it. It saves battery and bandwidth. Once you start a data transfer it should jump pretty quickly to H+. It can get annoying, but youll get used to it.

Edit - nvm, reread your post and it answered my question.
When I was using Mobile Odin, a question occurred to me while flashing. Since Mobile Odin injects root, couldn't I have just used an official stock fw instead of the pre-rooted one?
Please direct me to a thread that explains this if it exists. I am not a newb to flashing but still lack some knowledge about it.
I unlocked my gnex, flashed twrp, flashed superuser, then flash the jan 14th nightly cm10.1 which worked well for me.
Then i decide that i needed to flash a radio for some stupid reason(obviously the wrong one) leading to an endless battle to retrieve my connection.
I used odin to get to ics stock. I am running ics stock and still no service connection. I can see my imei but..... network, mobile network type, my phone number, min, prl version, and iccid are all unknown.
EDIT:
I flashed a different stock rom from odin. Stock ICS. Then flashed the radio that came with it and now..
Voice calls work though i feel like the reception sucks
Sms works great as far as i can tell
4g works great
3g doesnt exist at all.
I think i may just be missing the radio for 3g. (cdma?)
Im afraid of flashing anything before knowing what will actually work but i need 3g.

After getting it mostly working with ics I flashed cm10.1 but did not flash another radio.
This confuses me because i thought i needed an updated radio to go with the updated rom. From ics to 4.2.1.. But instead of needing another radio it worked the same as it did with ics.
Is the ga02 going to be what i need with cm10.1? Also does it work better from fastboot or twrp? Does it matter if i flash a cdma or an lte radio first?
Ga02 is not needed but it's the latest radio.
They all work but different people prefer different radios.
Many are flashable using twrp. Just got to find them.
Also make sure the radios you flash are for your carrier.
Hello all. I bought Galaxy Nexus L700 a few days ago. It was used.
And I have a problem now. After it boot up, I have a message "no SIM-card, No Service" After I change Mobile Network from CDMA to LTE/CDMA and back to CDMA I have a signal. But no 3G.
I know that this issue is available at Verizon Gnex until you insert SIm card. I'm confused because there is no SIM card.
Does anybody know how can i fix it? I tried flash factory image from link above, but with the same result.
Please, help!

Hey everyone need a question answered. I just purchased a used sgh i317 and am planning on unlocking it to use on the tmobile network. I have read and understand the process of using the aws hack to enable att modem to use the tmobile 3g/4g network. I was just wondering if it was possible to flash the factory image ( SGH-T889_TMB_T889UVBMD1_teshxx.zip) for the tmobile note II with odin from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2102380 . If I did this would this completely put my sgh-i317 as basically a tmobile note 2 with full data and wifi calling.
I have read in the forums that I should always keep the att modem. Is this also true of the kernal too. Or is my plan to completely turn the sgh-i317 in to an t889 possible as stated above. I really appreciate any imput you would have. thanks!
Most people flash tmobile image so they can use the native wifi calling app.
If that's not a concern for you, I would put in the tmobile sim, unlock it, then add the tmobile 4G APN and reboot. If you live in a refarmed region, you will get 4G data with no further steps.

Can't mix modem's. You end up with a bootloop. But most of the time the modem's are separate from most Rom's. But ya might want to do a double check just to make sure. So you don't run into any problems..

I appreciate it! I think I got it. The stock factory image would include the radio (I guess most custom roms do not), kernal, and OS. Since the sgh-i317 is so similar to the t889, I could technically flash the tmobile factory ROM onto the sgh-i317. I would just have to flash the att modem in place of the tmobile modem. Think I am just Going to flash a custom rom with wifi calling and just flash the newest att modem too. After I unlock the AWS and set my APN to Tmobile, I should be good to go! I appreciate your help guys! If I missed something here, please let me know.
Sounds about right. You're essentially good to go with any ROM or kernel from the I317, T889 and N7105. You should be fine as long as you don't mix modems (check the backgrounder in my T889V LTE guide if you feel like it) or flash N7100 stuff (see multiple reports of messed up IMEIs and such).
Hey so im afraid im on the same boat as those who flashed a t889 modem on a t899v version of the note 2. I had fixed my signal and etc so now I have a working phone which although was a pain im glad I have a working phone. But for some reason whenever it looses connection to WIND HOME, it can never connect back to it untill I reboot the phone. ALSO when I try going automatically to search for a connection it either looks forever until a force stop or nothing happenings if I do manual it shows wind home and like 6 versions of WIND AWAY, no matter what I touch it will never register it even though it claims it is trying to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it helps even though its the same error throughout what ever rom I use im using a t889 modem, with tweaked 2.5

You can brick your phone if you use a modem not intended for your phone. Just flash the T889v again.

Has any one been successful in reverting to a T889V modem?
Also, once the T889 modem is flashed on T889V phone, does that unlock all the available LTE bands? For instance, would I be able to use the AT&T, Rogers, Telus/Bell LTE bands? Or would I need to flash specific modems for those phones?
Is there a custom modem file that would enable all the LTE bands the phone is capable off?
Are there any disadvantages to installing T889 modem on T889V? Would I lose anything?
Hi,
I have note 2 from AT&T at 4.1.1 with I317UCALJ2 and I took t-mobile connection, I can not have mobile hotspot on. Also I get call drops and less 4G connection as compared with my wife's iPhone 5, she is having consistant 4G and mobile hotspot. I called t-mobile they changed my APN settings to fast-t-mobile.com, but it did not work much, then I was reading a forum and I dialed *#2263# and selected WCDMA ALL (when I did that my APN in the settings changed back to epc.tmobile.com). Now I am getting 4G band but still no mobile hotspot.
My phone is unlocked, I unlocked my phone using the key combinations posted in this forum last year. What should I do to make my phone more usable?
Thanks
sounds like some software problems try more roms..

I am not rooted and I have the stock ROM. Can someone please guide through the process?
Don't check CDMA all. Check LTE and then make sure you use the fast.tmobile.com SONg setting

I tried, still no luck

I tried that, still no luck, should I put any custom ROM? if yes then which one?
No rom yet....
Since you are changing carriers entirely...have you cleaned the device to make sure no bad data is present ??
I would suggest doing a factory reset to clean the device....
Then enter in the T-Mobile APN again and test...
If the process does not help ...a new or different modem may be needed to improve your signal...
All of the steps to do this are in the general and development sections...and you should begin by searching and reading the steps....
Go slowly...until you understand the process...and only then should you attempt any flashing....
We will be here to help....but you need to learn the process if you intend to flash files to this device...
Start in the "everything" thread in the general section....
It covers the basics of root and flash procedure...and how to avoid mistakes that catch several people...
And do not update your device via OTA...
It will give you a Knox bootloader...and that is not good for users...especially new users to flashing...
Read much....learn much...and only then should you flash....g

are you seeing LTE signal? if not, then you are on T mobile's legacy 3g or possibly the reformed 1900 hspa. Since the phone will not get 42mbps hspa, your speed maybe a bit lower due to 21mbps hspa. I am using the phone on t mobile network and do not have issue. i did have the latest att modem. When I was on the 4.1 rome, I did flashed the latest modem before the 4.3 rome.

I unlocked the phone, I also have supersu and triangle away on my phone. I do not remember what all I did. But I am on 4.1.1. If I do a factory reset, will I loose everything meaning unlock etc? Or should I install a modem? If yes then which one?
If you are ready for the 40 mbps hack....here ya go...
If you have a PC and a few minutes....this link will get you on track ...
I use ATT and have never used this method...but many have...and report proper speeds after unlock to TMO...
Good luck...g

factory reset should not change your unlock. The phone should stay as SIM unlocked (if that is what you meant). Once it is sim unlocked, it will stay as unlocked. It should not affect your root either as factory reset (though I am not 100% sure since I have custom rom so cannot remember if stock rom will remove root). Often it is best to stay with the same modem as the rom version. Here is the link to the modem list: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987541
I have the latest one but I am using 4.3 rom. I cannot recall which modem I had when I had 4.1.2 rom so do a bit search, but I think it is the MJ4.
