Hello All,
I have been lurking around here for quite a while testing out all of your guys' hard work and was wondering what I need to begin to develop a ROM! I know I would need a dedicated Linux drive to code and compile. Is there any way I can do this off an external HDD? I'm open to advice and I'm really enthusiastic about this so please help out!
All the best

Ok, I've gotten quite a few PMs about where and how to get started working with Android. I wrote up this guide to help people with porting AOSP ROMs. Be aware, there is no sure fire way to port and you probably will run into bugs and problems. I won't be able to help fix your problems just by someone saying "this or that doesn't work" or "I'm getting a bootloop". Please refrain from posting things like that in this thread. If you have a problem with something please post a link to the thread of the ROM you are trying to port and the base ROM and any other useful information and a logcat. I can give you ideas, however I am not going to do anything for you... it is a lot of trial and error and it's not for everybody. Search, search, search, there is a WEALTH of information on this site, use it... Search before you post, more than likely somebody is having or has had the same problem. That being said here is the guide for anyone interested, there are other guides out there but I wrote this one from my experience.

Good luck.
Minimum Requirements:
-A working knowledge of Android OS
-A working knowledge of Android terminology (see the link at the bottom if you are unsure about some terminology)
-A working knowledge of how to use 7zip or a similar program (as well as the program installed on your computer)
-A working knowledge of how to use Notepad++ as well as the program installed on your computer
Here is a very good thread to help you get started as well, if you are shaky on anything:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941195
Also this app may be useful, LAIA:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2104750 Learn Android in Android
Happy Porting!
Man you are on a roll. Thank you for this, your roms, and all the help you give the community. Thank you
Hello guys, I want to learn to port android roms. I read quite a lot about it on android.google. I understood quite a lot but not at all enough for porting a new rom. I did not understand how to make drivers for Xperia M(not available on their developer website either). And I did not read further as It went all over my head after that . I want to learn how to build a new rom from scratch. I do not want to use cynogen mod builds, Android Kitchen or pre-built roms. I want to make my own rom the google way(using stock resources provided by google). I need a person as a Mentor for it and loads of resources that will help me achieve it. I am a beginner level C/C++ and Java developer. I realize I do not have enough knowledge for it but that is why I need your help. Lead me to where I can gain this knowledge. Any one who would like to take this novice as his/her disciple will have my gratitude for life time.
Ok So I Still Have A D710 And Wanted To Make A Rom For it I Have Rooted Every Phone I Got and Installed Roms An Stuff But Wish Someone Could Help Me In Making A Rom If I Do Get The Help Specially On Porting I Will Try To Bring Lollipop To This Device If I Could Get Help In Developing a Rom I Would Be Happy Thanks
Is Their Anyone Out Their Who Can Help Please I Really Would Like To Try Lollipop On This Device Anyone Please Help Me on Developing I Have No Experience
It's far too complicated for anyone to walk you through. If you don't know how to get started, your first step is most likely to get started on a Computer Science degree with an emphasis on programming.
Can anyone please provide a proper, elaborate guide for compiling roms for miatoll tree? Have time in lockdown and eager to learn the process.
The guides on google are way too generic or backdated. I guess it'll help many people like me if some DEVS took the time to write a guide which shall in turn, in my opinion promote more development.
This video can help you, checkout this one and Part-2 also. The person compiled ROM for Mido (I guess). But you don't have to do much changes and many things will be same as mido.

i would like that too if some pro dev did a small basic guide as most of the guides are old now i know the basics of compiling and some other stuffs but that's the end of it nothing more.
