Rooting my Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi, I've some basic experience regarding rooting and flashing of roms but I have some enquiry before I start flashing on my up and coming nexus 7.
So here are the steps to proceed on:
1st unlock the boot loader using fastboot oem unlock
2nd flashing a custom recovery using fastboot flash recover recovery.img
3rd just do a full wipe and install my downloaded rom and gapps
And I'm done with the steps for flashing on the N7 2013 edition right?

Nexus Toolkit from SkipSoft does it all and is very easy to use.

toolkits are nice because they make it easier indeed, whereas they should not replace the knowledge of manually doing it for the case of emergencies should you mess it up.

Why is this wiping everything on the phone?

So here's the deal. Flash my gnex with the file provided according to this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394051
Now the thread specifically say "NO WIPE". But every time I flash using ODIN its wipes everything on my phone. And yes I have followed instructions to the T. My phone is unlocked and all options that are supposed to be are unchecked/checked.

If your bootloader is locked, ODIN will wipe. Just unlock your bootloader and be done with it. See link in my signature on how to flash a ROM using fastboot instead of ODIN.

Yeah. What's up with this wave of modders buying a Galaxy Nexus, wanting to do custom firmwares/ROMs, mods, etc and then out of the blue they are afraid of unlocking their bootloader?
It makes no bloody sense at all.
ODIN flashes always wipe, easier to use fastboot to flash the stock images

Only with repartition set.
You can flash kernels, radios etc without wiping just fine. Or at least that used to work fine on my SGS1.
That said, I agree about fastboot being a on overall better tool for most tasks. I see no reason to use Odin if you can do the same thing via fastboot.

Agreed. But like I said my boot loader/phone is unlocked. I don't mind fast boot was just wondering why this wipe the whole phone when it say it doesn't.

[FASTBOOT][GSM][4.1.2] Rooted Factory Images

I have modified the Yakju Galaxy Nexus factory images by completely wiping my Nexus, restoring using the factory images supplied by Google, rooting them and repacking the images with root intact.
After trying so many ROMs that are available, sometimes I think, especially considering the latest releases from Google, that stock is the way to go. Flashing it using these images is my preferred method, being the cleanest, and I have provided these for your convenience as I haven’t seen them anywhere else only ever seen flashable ROMs (i.e. from Recovery) based on the factory images, etc...
These are:
Factory Images “yakju” for Galaxy Nexus “maguro” (GSM/HSPA+)
Android 4.1.2 (JZO54K) with SU binary only
Android 4.1.2 (JZO54K) with SU binary and SuperSU app
Download links are here. MD5 and SHA1 sums are listed so you can check the downloads.
You have to use Fastboot to flash these to your device. The only requirement is that your device's bootloader is unlocked, which you can easily do, but be warned that this will wipe your user data as will flashing these factory images.
To Unlock Bootloader (in the terminal):
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
Unzip the factory image and just run the flash-all.sh in a Linux terminal or flash-all.bat in the Windows command line.
thanks 'mate! I'm gonna try this out in a bit last time I was on stock was still 4.1.1, and my current custom ROM is still on that version.
What are actually the differences of 4.1.1 and 4.1.2? Just thought you had any idea.. :cyclops:
In 4.1.2 I've noticed better battery life like others have reported and notifications can now be expanded and shrunk if you hold on them and drag up and down.

It would be really helpful if someone could help how to install this using a Mac?
Now that's more like it:good: People should start using fastboot more often other than toolkits:good:Learn to install drivers on your computer. Thanks for posting :highfive: I just hope people take the time and learn it..

I'm not 100% sure as I have never used a Mac for that but there's a good guide here.
Hey, thanks for the links, just want to ask, if I'm already rooted and unlocked my bootloader, if I flash this via fastboot, will it erase my apps/internal memory/photos and such? Quite curious it's just the unlocking the bootloader that deletes all data. Will like inquiries. Thanks!

If you just run the script as is, it will wipe everything. The best thing to do is just flash the system.img if you want to retain your data.

[Q] [urgent] Help needed

so i got into this problem i sucessfully unlocked the bootloader using htc offficial method flashed the twrp recovery wiped everything as coming from stock rom
downloaded the slimbeam rom and the g apps and flashed it but the problem is after the htc boot screen i am getting this kind of message in red lines and then it get stuck at that i tried several other roms also still the same problem any solutions where i got wrong??
On your PC, take the rom you're flashing and unzip it with 7zip, get the boot.img file over to where your fastboot is, then in fastboot USB mode, issue this command -
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Be sure that you're only using a rom for your phone.

You're unlocked with HTCdev.com but encrypted signature security is still there - aka s-on.
You'll need to do this with every rom flash, unless it includes an s-on kernel installer.
And if one does, those don't work 100% of the time, not the dev's fault.
This is pretty much the standard procedure for all s-on HTCs.
You can skip it if your flashing a similar rom and you're sure it has the exact same kernel as the previous one.
But you'll probably spend more time figuring that out each time than just doing the procedure.
I think most people do the rom first, then the boot.img - I think that you want to go with that.
Thanks man really appreciated the reply
Btw can you suggest stable cm rom kernel combo and
also do I have to flash the boot. Img from the rom I downloaded?
I would be great if you provide stable cm rom :thumbup:
Send from my nexus 7 still on jb
Sorry, I own other HTC models and you have to go with one for your phone.
And yeah, you want to flash the boot.img from each rom you download and try.
The boot.img contains the kernel - that ties the hardware to the rest of the rom.
They have to match up.
So we I am also trying to flash ligux rom so we need to flash the rom and gapps in the recovery and then flash the hell boy kernel through flash boot via cmd right?

If that kernel and rom combo are compatible, yes, that's it exactly for an s-on HTC.

You will want to install your recovery using a cmd prompt. Our phone is S-on, so you may run into difficulty trying to use goo for a recovery installation. MAKE A BACKUP ONCE YOU GET TWRP INSTALLED!!!!
If you want cm10 you will need to get your twrp up and running first, download your desired cm10 zip to your computer, open archives using 7zip, copy the boot img from the rom zip to your working fastboot folder (assuming that you have fastboot set up since you got this far), open a cmd window and navigate to your fastboot folder using the command cd c:\yourfastbootfoldername.
Once your rom is installed, reboot to bootloader. Plug your phone into your pc, it should switch from fastboot to fastboot usb. Use the command fastboot flash boot boot.img. You should now be able to reboot your phone and enjoy cm10!

You should install kernel that given on every ROM thread, and not always HELLBOY.
Unlocked bootloader doesn't mean that your phone is S-Offed, it is different.

There is a whole lot more work to get the device s-off. Your kernel is the boot img that I mentioned earlier. I am PrimoC, so I don't have experience with hellboy, but I do have to flash a new kernel with every rom. If you are going from one cm10 to another cm10, you might be safe, but I wouldn't chance it. Unlocking your bootloader allows you to flash kernels. It doesn't give you s-off.

The one that came with ROM. And please.. just read the damn instruction in the ROM thread, everything is said clearly there, I can bet on that. Read it carefully step by step or you will end up here soon or sooner with another question like "Guys my htc is bricked help".

How to I install custom ROMs on the Nexus 5X?

Like I remember reading something about flashing factory images first them installing the ROM, I'm getting confused coming from an LG G3. On G3 it was just root, flash TWRP, then flash ROM of choice. But with Nexus 5X it's a lot more complicated. Can someone give me a detailed way of properly flashing a custom ROM?

You just have to flash corresponding vendor image for that months security update. E.g. Yiu are flashing a rom based on july security patch. You need to just flash vendor image from July once a month. As long as you are flashing rims based on july patched, you need just flash vendor from july once
