Noticed that the YouTube app only plays in HD mode if you are on either WIFI or LTE. (Note 2) Anyway to make that app think that I'm on LTE on the S3?
You could always just go to general settings in the YouTube app and click high quality on mobile

Yup. But it ain't HD. It's a bit painful to watch when your used to HD. I know T-Mobile non LTE speeds are fast enough.
Since Youtube auto-adjusts to the available speed, I doubt there's any way to switch to HD. You can use the Browser based Youtube or tweak your Data Speeds based on Doc Holiday's Tweaks in the S3 Modem Thread.
You can try using this app, you can stream HD videos even if you are on edge. and it has other functions too

here is a thread with modified youtube w/hd that i can confirm works on stock cm9 a5. he also has version for froyo/gb but i have not tested those personaly but should work. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715 i am running the wifi 3g black theme and works perfect. hd looks amazing. make sure download is apk and not zip. i had to download to computer then transfer to phone to get proper file. be sure to thank op of original thread for awesome work.
Seems to work for me just fine on CM9 A5. Only issue now is that Sprint's data connection, at least in my area, is horrid.
i have to use roam control anytime i watch videos.

Why is the Epic not capable with the standard version?

"The catch is that YouTube HD res won't work on every Android 2.2 or 2.3 phone or tablet, as we're told it is set dynamically based on screen size and resolution." Richard Lawler engadget
Aha
I can confirm the Modified Youtube APK WIFI+3G working on Stock Rooted EL30 for the Epic 4G. Instead of the usual High Quality, the videos are viewed in HD.
It's a tough call, as the resolution is the exact same size as when it was HQ. But I *think* I can notice the higher sampling. Nonetheless, I rather have this then not ever have the option.
Great!
I like this! My 3G speeds suck but this YouTube doesn't have the weird video artifacts in CM9 like the other one did.
Works like a charm on mine with cleangb, thanks!

Hello
I uploaded 1080p and 720p videos taken with my Note 2 on Youtube. But then the quality is very bad when im watching them on the youtube app frop the phone. Even in HQ. Is this normal ?
Same thing watching them from a computer in 480p ( i have to choose 720p streaming minimum to have it quite ok but for me its a lof of time to load) but I have seen some video test taken with the Note 2 and they look fine in 360p.
Anyone experienced it or has a solution ?
Can you give us a link to the YouTube video so we can see what's going on?
I haven't uploaded video into YouTube from this phone, but I don't see why the quality would be poor.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
you have to wait for a while for YouTube to work on the video first.

really ? I'll wait a few days then and see what happens.
Just checked from the phone, it's HD, no problem with that. Quality looks okay.
One thing, in phone, HQ and HD are two completely different things. HQ could be 480P but HD is 720P.

Thanks for playing my video.
This is the quality I have with the HQ activated.
I'm not sure this is an okay quality, i've seen better. You both had the same kind of view ?
Even played it with my LG phone, its the same.
Just so we clear, I just have to click on the HQ button on the bottom left corner right ?

The uploader on xda app only proposes me 640x360 max size.
But we can see my quality is completely different from yours no ?

Again, if the video is 720P, then it should show HD button, not HQ, on your Note.

It is a 1080p video ! First you should try it on your computer you'll see the quality is very bad in 360.
And I have never seen a HD button on youtube android app, only HQ. Have you ? Its the same with my LG phone, shows HQ.

Well I rarely see videos which show HQ. I see HD most of the time.

I feel dumb lol. I found the reason why I havent got it HD. using WiFi gives me HD. but 3G network doesnt. I always use Mobile data.
I really have a good network connection, the carrier or Youtube must have blocked HD videos. still, my 3G HQ quality really sucks then
thanks for your time
now for the second part of the matter, is this normal 360p using the computer to stream is such a bad quality ?

Do you have a compression app like Onavo Extend running? Maybe the video is being compressed to save bandwidth on playback?
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
The native YouTube app on our phones only support HQ on mobile data. HD on wifi.
There is a hacked YouTube app on XDA which allows HD on mobile data, but you need to root to be able to install it.
I'm using it at the moment and it's beautiful.
It's got nothing to do with your carrier blocking HD on mobile data, just the YouTube app itself.
Try the hacked YouTube app here on XDA.

Simple question. Have anyone else ever noticed that when using 4G network that the quality of their video is significantly lower than that of the Wifi? Our phones are made for handling full HD so why not give it to us at all times unless we ask to get HQ and Not HD? seems a little silly to me. Not thay much of a bother but I'd just like to see my videos in full HD whenever I'm on the go.

Check your youtube app settings. If you want it to load in high quality when on a mobile data network you have to explicitly tell it to do that.
No no I understand that. But watch a video in HQ on YouTube.. Then connect to wifi and watch it in HD. There's a good deal difference in quality. At least to me anyway
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
You have to use the modded YouTube version by theo0so. That's the only way.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah there's a modded youtube floating around that allows you to watch in HD over 4g. Personally I don't see much of a difference between HD and HQ.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk 2
When on 4g the highest is going to be HQ. But when you're on wifi or LTE It's HD. Or as mentioned you can use the modded YouTube app to always have it on HD regardless of connection.

Ahh! Thanks for the information all of you! I saw a slight decrease in resolution in the videos between HQ and HD and for some reason it bothered me. I'll be downloading this app immediately! Thanks!
Is YouTube Pixilated for everyone using the app or only those running custom ROMs like CM11? The only work around for me was using the previous version (4.x) of the YouTube app. But then you miss out on the new UI and floating Window.

Its pixelated also on stock rom. Im using Viral instead.

That method, viral, and the old YouTube app produce the same video quality in HD mode. It's the new YouTube app that shows horrible quality on the G Pad in HD. Its weird because on my phones the new app has always shown HD in actual HD.

Hello, I have a note 2 n7100. I used to have 4.1.2. Flashed 4.3. Everything went well. One thing that's bothering me is the youtube app video quality is low even when I choose HQ. It gets better but it's pixilated. On 4.1.2 it was basically hd. Has anyone else experience the same problem? I can't figure out what it is. The rom?. Or a setting somewhere? Could a custom kernel effect it somehow? Any tips or advice appreciated.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Are you on 3G? Because usually the app switches to HQ rather than HD only on 3G.
Also there is an app called Viral .. It let's you choose whatever quality you want, its kinda good, you may want to try it
Thanks, i guess i had a modded youtube app before where it would automatically play hd in 3g. Noe it only has hd option on wifi only. The only solution i foind is the OG youtube downloader. Where you can choose what quality you want when on 3g. But it doesnt have an auto option to go to highest quality when on 3g. Ill check out that viral app. Thanks.

Actually most of the roms have youtube apk as system app and those apks are a little modified for better performance!
If u have system youtube apk then you can remove it by using root uninstaller from play store(needs root).
And reinstall youtube from play store!
