Would it be possible to add QI charging to Xperia m and have the phone detect that it's charging wirelessly? I was thinking of using these two products.

Well it will detect normal charging and not wireless charging as such. I think u will find some difficulty in taking the wire to the left side unlike the one shown in the image has the charging slot below. And it won't interfere with the NFc in any way.

I had assumed that the NFC and QI coils are in different locations on the nexus devices. Since the NFC coil is centered in Xperia M, there would be some overlapping.
Other pictures of similar receiving coils show the ribbon cable being folded, so I was thinking of diagonally bending the ribbon cable.

If this receiving coil doesn't short the data lines on the USB connector, it will be detecting as device trying to connect to usb, but there is nothing connected to the data lines, so is it possible to use this to detect that it's wireless charging as opposed to regular AC charger or connection to computer?

When you buy things from China/Hong Kong, you may get something dodgy - not saying you definately will, but when you hear about exploding iphones and whatnot, I think it is down to that.
I just bought the official charger for the Xperia Z Ultra, and took out the cable from the dock and just use that personally.
Have now 4 magntic charging cables dismantled from the dock, all 4 work perfectly and grant fast charging ..........................
(If You pay cheap, you get cheap, that´s a universal rule)

Got one of these a couple of weeks ago and no problems with it. Using it with the official charger and seems to charge fine. Guess I got one that was not assembled on a Friday afternoon.

no it doesn't
and the Z Ultra Dock and Z1 dock are the same except for the slot as the phones are different thickness - I use a ZU dock with my Z1
and to the OP - the Sony original charger has the data pins shorted out to enable fast charging when the phone detects this - it is the phone that decides whether to fast charge or not based on the shorted pins

The USB has 4x pins/connections - + and two data pins in the middle, as the mains charger has no use for data connection they are shorted out on the charger to enable the phone to identify a charger with fast charge ability
you could have a 2.1 amp charger connected to the phone but if the data pins are not shorted out the phone will limit the charge rate at 0.5 amps or 500ma
I have a Xperia Z1 and I was wondering if it is equipped with any functions that enables wireless charging (QI-enabled something)?
Tried googling but found no results other than some news on Xperia Z..

I have to admit, it's a convenient technology to just lay your mobile onto that charger and get it charged.
But there are two big disadvantages from my point of view:
Low efficiency - the induction tech used has a small efficiency, so there's a big loss of energy
Low charging power - the charging rate that is possible with the current tech is rather low, it takes AGES to have your phone fully charged, and I even read about people not getting any extra fuel because they used the phone during charge.
Personally speaking I like the magnetic charger plug for our phone a lot more, because it has hardly any loss and just takes a second to attach it, needing no closing of flaps upon removing.

I have a n4 as well. Charge time is marginally longer/slower. The info you have read is incorrect based upon my and other users that have used wireless charging.

Thanks guys. I do own the magnetic cable (dismantle it for the cable), however it is a nuisance that the magnetic cable only works with the charger adaptor and not with the PC..
Been trying to find alternative ways to get my phone charged other than opening the flaps and I thought wireless charging may be a better idea

I use my magnetic cable to charge the phone via laptop and it works..not sure why not for u

Nope. Mine is stock. infact magnetic charger seems to charger at a faster rate for me from Laptop
I have 2 of the magnetic cables: one is original from the sony DK-31 dock and the other from japan. Although the both look identical to one another, they function differently.
The original one doesn't charge from a laptop and has to be used with an adapter
The generic one charges from a laptop and can be used with an adapter, however in a laptop it charges significantly slower. Has to charge all night and it still won't be a complete full charge in the morning - it will be close to full.
1.) The Z1 does not have any sort of wireless charging built in.
2.) The Z1 will charge via PC USB connection, however the output of the USB cable varies based on the standard.
** USB 2.0 can charge at a rate of up to 750mAh with concurrent data transmission. Without data, the charge rate maxes out at 5A at 5V.
** USB 3.0 can charge at a rate of up to 900mAh with concurrent data transmission. Without data, the charge rate maxes out at 5A at 5V.
** USB 3.1 can charge at a rate of up to 900mAh with concurrent data transmission. Without data, the charge rate maxes out at 2A at 5V and up to 5A at 12V or 20V.
3.) Qi wireless chargers are slower than wall chargers as well. A typical Qi wireless charger transmits power at a rate of 750mAh at 5V.
To put this all in perspective, the standard wall charger that comes with the Z1 charges over USB 2.0 at a rate of 1.5Ah at 5V.
A PC USB connection will typically be 50% slower at charging than the stock wall charger for the Z1.
Thanks all for the reply. Yup, my cable is inded the one from the Sony Charging Dock and hence it does not seems to be working with the computers unless it is paired with the adaptors.
At least now I know that Xperia Z1 does not comes with wireless modules.. Keep hoping that it may have.

Mine doesnt do it either.
I removed the cable from the original sony dock.
3rd party adapters work plugged in to the computer..

Note, WITH a receiver. A receiver is a piece of hardware which sits under the base of the phone, and is connected to the charging circuit. Just google the term.
You'd have to be really motivated to take your phone apart, just to attach that. Without considering the space that module would need vs the available space inside the phone, which is pretty slim to start with. Actually with a metal phone back, I believe the module would have to sit outside of the phone, between the plastic cover and the back - so the phone back would not be flat.
I have had a Nexus 4 with wireless charging for the last 2 years, and I rarely use the wireless charger I bought:
- charges slower than a wall charger
- if you pick the phone up - as we all do - you stop charging and additionally multiply the number of charging cycles.
Cables are not as cool as a Qi pad, but a Qi pad also needs its cable...
Anyway, out of the box, the mi3 doesn't do wireless charging - just confirmed that with my wireless charger

You need a wireless charger receiver, you will lose the USB port, when you want to use USB you will have to take the case off and take the charger plug out.
Since it's pretty thin you can use any case, or none (Maybe not metal cases).
You also need a wireless sender, this is the pad that the phone sits on.
Notes: Since these are only 500ma (have not found a pad > 500) and with less efficiency (so its actually less than 500ma), it will take a very long time to charge the phone. I dont even know if its able to keep up with the power requirements of the phone if it's in use.
Powerbot chargers are supposed to put out 1000mah. I think its partially dependent on the actual charging cord plugged into the qi charger though

that is true. all parts need to be compatible to get a decent charge rate. i had a charger that put out 2amps and a cord that supported it too but most receivers put out 500-750mah which results in a slow charge. and i havent found a decent receiver yet either. Most of them are really finicky and need to have the phone placed just right on the receiver for it to charge.
Whether it be an internal wireless receiver or external usb c receiver. Most external usb c receivers are at the minimum 3.9" tall which seems to be the issue.

You can get an Ultra Thin USB-C Qi Wireless Charging Adapter, and you could install it on the phone and keep it hidden and in place by getting a Razr phone case. I plugs into the USB-C charging port and the thin flat ribbon cable has a 90 degree bend to it. I used this coil adapter before on a convention smartphone years back, the only drawback is that your USB-C on the phone will be occupied by the coil. Wireless charging is slower than traditional USB-C charging.

I'm aware of that but the issue is most of these are at least 4" in height which would cover the fingerprint sensor.
Find the shortest version, and if need be you can cut it to streamline it.
The ribbon cable has some flex to it, and if you use a heat gun you can bend the flex cable like an accordion to reduce length. You could also diminish the height of the coil pack by cutting it. Since the phone has a glass back, and your "sandwiching" it with a case, there is no fear of creating a short when charging.

Wouldn't cutting it cause it to malfunction? Also, do you mean use a heat gun to fold it in half? Do you have illustrations?
I think he meant to cut the edge to make the fingerprint reader completely clear, but not to cut too much to avoid the coil, and I'm assuming he meant to fold the cable in half.
Another point besides the charging speed is the heat that the coil produces.

Just a few questions. Where can the wireless adapter in this picture be purchased (link)? It looks like the usb dongle is too long to fit properly on the phone since the adapter is shifted below the fingerprint sensor. Does this wireless adapter work good on the device without overheating?

I see this for Barbuda nut only comes with lightning connector... would need USB-C ＆ only 5v so... I would still buy one at that folds its level because I don't really care if it's fast charges because I leave the thing on the stand overnight and it may actually be better for the battery to slow charge.
I played around with this as well. I was able to trim the one I'll link below to the right size. The key is to not cut the coil, the rest seems like it can be cut without a problem. In the end I didn't like not having access to the USB-C port. But it was a fun pandemic project.

I'm a little late to the party here, you can solder in a wireless coil to the inside of the phone. The best coil I could find is this 7.5W (5V 1.5A) coil. There's a 10W (9V) option, but it would require addition circuitry to use in a phone.
The external plug-in solution is by far the easiest option, but it has too many flaws: blocks usb port, protrudes too much, fragile- must be kept inside a cover to protect it, most put out 2.5-5W, and it looks horrible.

And here's a youtube link showing installation. You can skip half of it. aim is to tap it to the ribbon carrying the charging from the usb.
It does require some understanding of basic circuitry and soldering... not for everyone.
Ive just bought the new Razr 2022, and will be installing it on that.
Just keep in mind that the RAZR has two batteries, and getting it apart isn't for the faint of heart.
It's also one thing to get apart, and another thing getting it back together..
Just advice, but definitely watch anything you can get your hands on before tackling, and good luck.
