L520 horrible signal - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have 1bar or red xall of the time. I have found that this only occurs when switched to 4g LTE. If I switch to 3g only I have great signal. Im currently in NJ. If I reboot whole in lte I get signal for a bit then back to none. Been working on this issue with sprint. The reps never heardof thisissue and At first the rep insisted I swap my phone out but, I refused because I believe I have pin pointed the issue to LTE and would rather be part of the solution. A ticket had been opened with Samsung. Let me know if you have the same issueand what you have found. For now just rousing strong on 3g. I'll keep everyone posted.

Hi,
I am not sure if your post refers to the Galaxy S4 mini (as I see in the subject you write "L520"): please confirm if we are talking about the same device otherwhise I should create a new tread.
Anyhow, here is my issue:
I live in Italy and have Vodafone as phone carrier. I recently got S4 mini phone. Before I have been using a Nokia XpressMusing 5530 phone.
I have always been having full signal with 5 out of 5 bar. Since I moved my SIM from Nokia into Galaxy S4 mini things got worst. I have most of the time barely 1/2 of the signal I had with Nokia, still in the same place and same carrier. Where I had 5/5 now I have 1 or 2 out of 4.
I reported this issue, which I greatly dislike to Samsung Exclusive support team and was told that I am forbid from comparing brands and even models as each individual smartphone or phone behaves differently. I replied that when a person spends €400 for a phone, it is implied that phone signal must be perfect! Sometimes, when it changes from Data to Wi-Fi the phone signal disappear and it reappears un within 5-7 sec displaying a circle with a bar across (meaning no signal).
Is this phone supposed to behave so bad? What to do?
I am still undecided whether to just sell my phone and get something better, like HTC One.
Thank you,
Spiro

Buon Giorno Spiro. Yes I Am referring to the galaxy s4 mini in the USA. The phone should have great signal. Im not sure how to Fix this either.

Why does my Signal suck?

Hi,
I own a VZW Galaxy Nexus, I'm not as phone savvy as I use to be and I can't for the life of me figure out/ find and reputable sources about why this phones signal sucks so terribly bad. Presently in my house I can rarely send texts and my calls will drop due to lost signal. I live in PA a few miles from Chambersburg/ Waynesboro (for those who may know the area). When I go back to MD I have no problems pretty much. I'd like to chalk it up to just where I live but I feel like theres another reason.
I've got Android Revolution HD not the 4.1.0 one (downloading now) I have the one prior. It works great, very smooth, no random reboots unless Im playing music, using the GPS, and charging it (which is odd...). I've read a couple different things about PRL one being that it can screw up your 4G and the other being that its no big deal. I have yet to do it because honestly I still don't believe it will make a difference.
What I am looking for is some confirmation so I can stop beating my head against a wall when I'm trying to send a text. Even over wifi I can't send one (idk if you can but I figure it shouldnt hurt it). I'm sort of missing my HTC Droid Inc 1...too bad the screen got smashed.
No one has a answer for me?
Patience young padiwan... someone will reply shortly.
I did notice something though, when my modem when completely herp derp and I had it shut off down stairs I got better reception then I do upstairs in my room with my PC : /
Edit: no idea if this means much but checking signal strength and it was at -100 dBm 1asu then went to -93 dBm 2asu,
Is your baseband I515.10? If so that's probably why. I have had two Verizon gnex, one with I515.10 and one with I515.9....
After talking to many people on here it seems that people that had a phone that shipped with I515.10 (including myself) have pretty frequent signal drop. Whereas the people that have I515.9 (what my first one was), do not.
It's a shame, but there isn't really much you can do about it other than call and complain that it is a well documented problem, and hope they send you a better one.
It's frustrating for sure, but I still wouldn't trade this device for any other.
Also, forcing the PRL CAN ruin your sim card, but it's not like it's a guarantee. As far as I know though, there isn't really any benefit in taking the risk and trying since the device auto updates PRL.

Yep my baseband is I515.1 ...LAME guess im gonna go call VZW
Good luck buddy.

just as a reference, texts rely on cell signal, so if you dont have cell service but have wifi, texts wont send/receive.
called them and it turns out i'm on the very edge of two distant Cell towers one at 5miles and another at 7miles. Biggest issue is the terrain because I like in Southern PA there are a lot of mountains and hills which interfere. The Tech rep also mentioned something about the time of year going into play because of the amount of water in the surrounding area which he got from an engineer @ VZW.
In all honesty it sounds like they were feeding you a load of crap. Not that there's no truth to what they say, but if you had a different phone that worked in your home, but your galaxy nexus is not working? Then what the verizon representative was saying would not be aplicable.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Yeah... That makes no sense at all man. It's just coincidence that 60% of Nexus owners have the same problem?
If you raise enough hell, the will send you another... Trust me.

You can confirm this based on using an app called OpenSignal (free from the market). One of the tabs in the app is "Map" and will show your current location, as well as the location of the tower your phone is connected to, with a red line between the two.
It's because it's SAMSUNG PEOPLE.
No one will admit if anyone has any experience with any Samsung device they should know compare an HTC or iphone or moto photon signal to any SPRINT SAMSUNG PHONE ITS NOT SPRINT.
It's the Samsung software or hardware that's been glitched since day one since the first epic
They all have weak signal u can compare a photon which is Motorola to this galaxy nexus
Galaxy s2, galaxy s3 any Samsung, WEAK SIGNAL PHONES, and not one person realizes this with comparing the experience of device to Device on the same network
. How can u get 5 constant bars on a photon or 2 or 3 on HTC evo or sprint I phone in the same area, but always 1 bar on Samsung phones All on the same network. ITS SAMSUNG SKIMPIN OUT ON THERE BUILD QUALITY whether hardware or software related, it pisses me off they persistently ROLL OUT brand new Devices all year and waist good phones cause they can't build a stronger signal phone.
So forget about complaining about signal issues it won't change until they figure the real reason out
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I have personally never had a signal issue, but I also have a baseband of .9. I feel this link gives a good insight of signal reporting on the GN.

Learnt something about Canadian LTE from a buddy who works for a carrier here

So I was enjoying a cigar with a buddy who is a field tech for a Canadian carrier (not mine rogers, but another one) when we got on the topic of a samsung tablet work issued him.
He said he uses it to troubleshoot LTE issues they've been having.
Basicly the device loses LTE and either goes into "no service" or get's stuck in HSPA+.
I freaked because i've noticed the same issue, but thought it was related to CM10 running on my phone.
Apparently they discovered it has to do with they're infrastructure. The phone loses LTE, tries to re-negotiate,gets rejected, and stops trying.
They're work around is to get firmware updates to get the devices (he didn't mention which ones) to re-negotiate a second (or third time) where it almost always goes through.
I just reboot or bounce air plane mode and it often works.
Just figured people might find that interesting.

Bell has had the same issue (for a while), I haven't received any calls about it recently but also didn't receive an email about it being resolved but it appears so. Our temporary resolution for it was to just keep it at H+ for the time being
Found where I posted about it here

When I bought my S3 at the Bell store here in Québec city a few weeks ago, the salesmen insisted on NOT giving me a LTE sim card.
What he told me conquers with what you are describing.
I accepted is suggestion and got a H+ micro sim.
Since then, I returned to the store to get a LTE sim card and I did encounter the issue once or twice.
I am now forcing my phone to remain on H+ at best via Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Network mode.
In the greater HRM (Halifax/Dartmouth/Bedford) we have a pretty good LTE footprint according to the Rogers website, but my S3 is constantly reconnecting. I can tell because every time it drops LTE, my visual voicemail app will notify that it has no service.
I turned LTE off because it was just hammering my battery. I could barely make it through a 10 hour work day with little to no usage if I leave LTE on, and I'm supposedly in the middle of the service area.

Off topic: CM10 has awesome battery life with LTE i find
I first read about LTE causing loss of service several months ago. I returned my first SIII because of it and the replacement phone would also loose service randomly. So now if I want to be assured that my phone is working when I really need it to, I have to disable LTE. Seems like more people need to know this since for some people it is important to know that your phone hasn't just decided to go into NO SERVICE mode without warning.
I'm told service providers were, until recently, strongly denying there is any such problem with LTE. It wasn't until the iphone5 came out with the same issue that this became a real problem for customer service.

Not sure if this is the same issue, but I sometimes receive a "not registered on network" or "sim not registered" when phone switches from LTE to 4G or comes back after being in a no service area.
A tech calls me once a week to track the issue and he told me last week they put out a fix for eastern canada and will soon do the same out west if it works. This is Telus by the way.
If you are running into what I mentioned all you have to do is switch to GSM/HSPA Auto mode under - settings/more settings/mobile network/network mode.
Of course you won't have LTE but its a reliable temp solution if you require consistent service.
MTS LTE
I've heard similar from MTS about their LTE!
My Galaxy S3 works fine on LTE, but my brother's S2 LTE never seems to display LTE on the screen, just says 4G all the time, yet speed test results indicate it really IS LTE! The first 2 weeks, his phone kept dropping to NO SERVICE randomly, but more often than not! We swapped out the LTE SIM on day 2 since the first seemed to be defective. After that, I updated the S2 to the latest release OS which seemed to have remove SOME of the issues.
From what I've heard, the LTE towers need the phone to be quiet on network activity for 20 seconds or so before it will attempt to jump back onto LTE. The S3, being much faster, doesn't seem to have issues flipping around as it needs. I'm told they are deciding which software/firmware to upgrade their towers too which will hopefully happen early 2013!
So I'm wondering if this might be the same issue with other carriers, where the problem is ACTUALLY with the towers and not devices?!

Not that stupid as I, like I said, did experience the issue since I got my LTE sim card.
But to answer your question, no I did not have to pay for the new sim card.
I've done the same. I find "4G" fast enough for the most part, so I just leave LTE off for the gain in battery life.
Also in Halifax I might add!

Note 2 very poor reception

First of all, I hope I am posting in the right place this time. I couldn't find anything for Note II Canada.
So I just bought a BNIB Note II a few days ago. It's the i317m (from Rogers/Canada) but had it unlocked and modified (or whatever that is called) to get it to work with AWS network (Wind mobile). It worked but the reception on the phone where I live is horrible. Basically the phone will only work if it's stuck next to one wall in my place (where the signal is 1-2 bars). Once I move the phone to any other place I lose all connection, and the phone is rendered useless, which really sucks. I have an older Blackberry that I'm borrowing and it constantly shows 2 bars anywhere in my place. I also had an LG Optimus and as much as it sucked at reception it was still better than the Note. Wind signal is generally good in my area except for a couple of blocks but still, I was expecting the Note II to have better reception than other phones.
So, I'm wondering if this has something to do with this particular phone or is this a known issue with all Notes? Anything I can do? The phone will show full bars once I'm out of those couple of blocks where I live but is it possible that the Note II has worse reception than cheaper and older phones?
Thanks.
I think Samsung are known for weak radios

I'm having the same issue with my Note II on Mobilicity. After researching I've concluded that Samsung devices have weaker radio's that most other devices. I can wander around my home with my Note II in one hand and my wifes HTC Panache in the other and the Note II's signal is always 7-10 dBM lower than the Panache. The Panache never loses connection in my house and always has at least 1 bar while the Note II will drop in many places. Every time I call Mobi they say they'll make changes redirect an antenna by a few degrees or boost the signal but nothing ever changes.
I wish the phone would auto connect to the CDN Roaming network whenever I drop. I think it sort of does but just doesn't Register on the network because I do have a indication I can make Emergency Calls Only and shows I have 2-3 bars.

I've noticed that my Note2 has poor LTE reception, 1 bar and 1Mbps down. If I switch to WCDMA only I get 4 bars and 7MBps and 1up. I just thought that it was my area. 2 weeks ago I got an S4 and the signal difference is a amazing. The S4 has 4 bars of LTE and I get 20Mbps down and 10up, the Note 2 on the same sim still gets 1 to 2 bars and very slow data.

What's wrong with my Note 2?

Dear T-Mobile Note 2 Fans,
I absolutely love my Tmo Note 2.
However, I have one issue that's bringing me great distress and that I hope the community can point me toward a resolution.
I get no to very weak intermittent signal (no bar) at my home. Other places, I get normal signal.
Phone:
My phone has the latest stock T889UVBMD1. It's rooted. Immaculate. Never been dropped.
T-Mobile Coverage:
There's excellent T-Mobile coverage at my home area 2G/3G/4G/LTE.
Experiments:
I have taken my sim out, and inserted it into my wife's T-Mobile HTC One, and have gotten full bar 4G/LTE strong signal. Hence, This exclude possibility of bad sim or poor T-Mobile coverage in the area.
I have installed other modems (BMB4, VALL4) to no avail.
I have installed other roms (Jedi Master 16 to no avail.
I have used KIES to completely restore my phone back to factory state to no avail.
I have tried going into Setting ---> Network Mode and changed the settings to no avail
I have tried going into Service Mode via *#2263# and tried to force it to LTE/WDMA and WDMA ALL mode but to no avail.
I have used Open Signal app on both my wife's HTC One and my Note 2. It seems like the HTC One is connecting to the nearest cell tower. Hence, the strong signal connection. Whereas, the Note 2 is not connecting to the nearest possible cell tower.
Please kindly help me resolve this issue. Any other places aside from my home, my phone works perfectly fine. At home, I get no to very weak non-usable signal.
Many thanks in advance.
I had the same problem, what worked for me was going into network settings *#2263# and selecting (2) wmcda - all
I get full signal everywhere now & still connect to lte on the data side.
Thank you for the suggestion. I did try *#2263# but to no avail. Zero bar
As if there's an invisible force field around my house preventing JUST my Note 2 from the network.

Seems like the internal antenna is having an issue. Hmm, is it overheating?
Only reason I ask is I ran into this issue but with my old GS3. The antenna portion of the phone was burning up at times and not sure why exactly. So I decided Root the phone which resulted in a lost IMEI, injected it back in, still no signal and still the phone was still burning up. Long story short I just eventually just ended up taking it back to Tits-Mobile.

What worked for me was turning off lte, leaving at max 4g. My signal went from half to full.

many people I've known all have experienced the same shiiiiiit from tmobile
i think tmobile is playing game on its users
tmobile knows where we live and reduce signal ....tmobile knows at home we gonna jamp their bandwidth ....cause we're on unlimitted plan
let's dump tmobile and go for Gosmart
Is that possible? I'm on the $70 PrePaid unlimited plan. There shouldn't be any throttling.
When I do take my sim out of the Note 2 and insert it into my wife's HTC One at home, I do get full bar speedy connection.
Perhaps, they are throttling base on the IMEI of the device, rather than, sim. That's just pure speculation on my part.

mine is on $70 pre-paid as well...but can't watch Youtube without having buffering; annoying and embarrassing
my coworkers are on Gosmart $45-plans and watch movie online just fine.
My N2 all test speed @ 20Mbps ....but it's just for show; there is no use.....cause when I tried to download a file just 40Mb....it takes way too long relatively to its speed test.
I think the name Gosmart is realy "go smart"

s4 mini duos network problems

Hello,
I appeal to all the users that have samsung galaxy s4 mini duos (i9192) to give me a honest opinion on their experience usage about this issue
I want to buy the phone because i have 2 sims, work and home and need both always on but i've been read that this phone has major problems with network signal such as:
"Poor network performance. I'm forced to restart 4 to 5 times per day to regain the network access. I checked from my service providers, no issues on their part. Dual Sim a failure. Apart from network issues, the design, ram performance are average. I'll recommend not to buy this instrument unless the dual-sim network problem is rectified."
Like this, there are many more in samsung phone forum.
Anyone can give me their opinion?
False. I'm using it without problems with two sims work/private. Signal strength may be lower, but it's not so bad. Device is very fast, in antutu it has more points than 4 core htc one x+ or galaxy s3.
Software is bit buggy, but nothing serious.

False. I'm using it without problems with two sims work/private. Signal strength may be lower, but it's not so bad. Device is very fast, in antutu it has more points than 4 core htc one x+ or galaxy s3.
Software is bit buggy, but nothing serious.

Thanks for the quick answer.
Yes, i have read many reviews and all shows very good results. But if you go to http://reviews.in.samsung.com/7463-en_in/GT-I9192ZWAINU/samsung-galaxy-s4-mini-reviews/reviews.htm you will see the very bad opinions.
Seems that the phone in bad coverage areas lost signal and don't regain signal unless you restart the phone or the network. Have you already been in bad coverage areas?
It will regain signal. For example yesterday - I was in underground parking lot and signal was very poor to none, but somehow I've got the incoming call when moving to other spot.
Maybe it's firmware related. I've updated manually to amh2 version through odin. Mine new csc is ser - Russia

Anyone else that has not experienced this problems?
I would like to know this also, I'm considering buying it solely because of the "Dual Sim" but I keep reading lots of people complaining about the signal issues.
I dont have any problems with my I9192 been in my hands for 2 months by now the network problem you describe it's very rare just couple of times since I've been using it but I've turn on and off airplane mode
for me it's a really good phone

Same problem
I also have the duos version. Once the signal is lost/falls in the dead spot region, it doesn't come back a automatically. Fed up with this.. after buying such a high end phone, restarting all the time to get network! What is the use of fast processor and all stuff if we can't make a phone call with it? And after reading the comments on the below page, it is clear that this is a known issue of the model:
gsmarena.com/samsung_i9190_galaxy_s4_mini-reviews-5375.php
Any solution for this? The handset has turned out to be useless.
I have not had a problem like this with mine, it works perfect. I live in a bad signal area and if I go down stairs in my house the phone will lose the signal , when I go back up stairs the phone always regains the signal with no problems.
I can't fault this phone, it's ten times better than my last one, HTC Desire V

Thanks,
Only the fact that you mentioned you have to do airplane mode 2 times is just severe enough, because in a phone with this price range that's a problem that should NEVER occur, and you can be the lucky guy that just has good coverage signal all of the time.
I came to the conclusion that it happens with much moore models than the ones that not happen.
I'm going to order the phone even with this feedback hoping that i have a flash of luck and my phone doesn't have the problems, because i've been waiting months for a dual sim phone with top performance and this seems to be the ideal phone to me.
I will post my experience here, if anything goes wrong i will try to sell it.

Yes, i totally agree with you.
I don't know how a brand like Samsung brings to the market a phone in this price range with these problems. And worst, dont't give a solution to them. Did you try to contact Samsung or use the warranty with them?
Same Issue with Samsung GT-I9192
Hi All,
I am facing the same issue with my Samsung GT-I9192, which I purchased on 1st Sep.
I am using 2 simcards, one being Vodafone and the other Idea, India region.
Surprisingly the issue is only with Vodafone, where the signal after dropping (very frequently) does not refresh.
In case of Idea simcard, the signal refresh is working fine.
I am not able to understand if the problem is with the service provider, sim card, hardware or the software.
I used my vodafone simcard with Galaxy Core (another dual sim phones), and they seem to work fine,
which gets me all the more confused.
The only difference that I notice is in the Mobile Network Type.
Its EDGE:2 for Vodafone and UMTS:3 for Idea, wonder if this has got anything to do with the network issues.
I did the default available 2 firmware upgrades since purchase, they seem to have worsened the problems.
Let me know if you are facing the same issue, with the same service provider.
Need to keep a close watch on the solution, as it seems to be affecting more people than expected, surprisingly couldn't find any issues a month back during the time of purchase....
Regards,
Varun

In my case, it's Vodafone also, but is in Western Europe.
My concern is that i have exactily the same problem in my present phone (Sony Tipo Dual) and it's the main reason (along side the big improve of speed and etc) for buying this phone. At the present, people call to me and they say that phone answers occupied (no network signal) and i look to the phone and it shows top signal strenght. I'm beginning to think that dual sim phones with android have some limitations (maybe antenna limitations).

Hello,
I appeal to all the users that have samsung galaxy s4 mini duos (i9192) to give me a honest opinion on their experience usage about this issue

In my case S4 mini network refresh is not working for secondary sim (aircel India) and working fine for primary sim Tata docomo. I buyed this mobile as it has 1.5 gb RAM with dual sim instead of Nexus 4.

thats true it should never occur, i think its implementation problem, android its not mean to be for dual sim phones the solution for dual sim on android its a samsung workarround, it should not be buggy but has some problems it does not make the phone unusable for me, I don't get coverage all the time, I travel from city to city and get poor coverage all the way so i think its not a big issue since it happen just a few times.

Hi Sriram,
My problem is very similar, Vodafone on either sim slots gives network problems, and Idea on either sim slots works fine. That makes me think that the problem must be hardware / software related to Network type. Its EDGE2 for vodafone and GPRS1 for Idea. What is the network type of your sim cards?
Phone defect.. Not related to Sim card

I use idea in the first slot and BSNL in the second slot. The trouble occurs with BOTH SIM. Earlier I used idea -Vodafone pair, the problem was still there. I live in am area where all operators have weak/varying coverage. Airtel and aircel have already been reported as showing same problem. All the users are affected with this issue, so it is clear that this has nothing to do with the operator, it is a fault of the phone either hardware or software. I think you have idea Sim working fine only means idea network is better in your area and may not need frequent network cell changeover. (?) And another fact we can see from the reports is, that, almost ALL THE COMPLAINTS have been reported from INDIA where the model released is the duos.
S4 Mini Network issues.
I too have a S4 Mini for less than a month and I am also facing network issues. One thing to notice is that the sim with internet doesn't have issues. Irrespective of which slot it is in. Currently I have Vodafone IN on Sim 1 and Airtel on 2 (with 3G). Airtel works fine and Voda has issues.
I did speak to Samsung care, they were very nice, however the problem wasn't solved, I have been adviced to go to Samsung service center and get the S/w reimaged.
I still haven't done that, however what I did was to reset the phone and while I was browsing on the play store I got a software called "Where is my Signal" by Grey Boy. For some reason I feel it is working fine now. I have not had any issue from last evening, baring one time when I was on a long conf call for around 150 mins today. else it has been working fine and receiving calls on both sims too.
I had used this software to refresh the network once, it has helped me, not sure if this is going to sustain but for now it is good.
If some one else also has this software installed and is finding this to solve the issues kindly post the same on the forum and may be helpful.
Will repost tomorrow again with the status.
BTW I agree to many opinions in this thread that Samsung should have done some testing or atleast after many of these issues coming up needed to provide a patch upgrade.

HB
Will factory reset work?

I had tried three apps of that kind: where is my signal, network booster(marcstealth), and network refresher lite. None of them could overcome the strange problem of this phone though at first they seemed to be working. Another question is, how do we know when to refresh network? If we know the signal is lost, we can restart or do something like that. Then there is one more issue: sometimes it shows good/full signal strength, but when try to make a call, will realize that it was false! I made to run the network booster app run when signal is low, using tasker app -but we are not supposed to live such a life using this celebrated costly handset.
But one thing in your post is of much importance. DID THAT RESET WORK? You haven't said much about that.

Rajesh

The reason for reset was to ensure that none of the softwares I had installed were causing the issue. The reset didn't change much compared to the way it was earlier.
Some observations of when the problem actually happens (again this is my observation and doesn't need to be the same in your case)
> When I am on a long incoming call on the sim which has Internet.
> Noticed that short calls don't impact the network.
> If there is a call drop imm after you receive a call.
I am planning to get the phone firmware re-imaged from the service center however I will need atleast 10 more days to do it as I am currently in a different city and I am not carrying the invoice copy.
BTW Rajesh, did u get any response from the CEOs office?
Regards
HB
