Yes.

To clarify, yes, because twrp backups are placed on your SD card/internal storage. Factory resets won't wipe your internal storage.

Just don't wipe the storage!

i read somewhere (yet to test) if you wipe data in CWM that it doesnt wipe virtual sd (pics, videos, songs, etc..)...but if u wipe from the factory reset option under settings in the phone, then it does wipe everything...is this true?
Wiping data and cache in CWM do not wipe the virtual SD card but yes, factory resetting will.

Hey I'm still new to Verizon g nexus and want to confirm that wiping data will not erase things like pictures, music and everything else on my internal memory

Wiping data in custom recovery will not touch your "SD card"

Yes. It definitely will.

Yes I am also wondering if doing a data wipe from clockworkmod recovery will delete the sdcard partition? I am about to try as soon as all my music finishes copying over to my computer. I'll post my results here once I know.Cheers!

No. Wiping in clockwork mod will NOT delete anything on your "SD card".

If you're on a custom ROM and wiping from CWM Recovery, it will not wipe the virtual "SDcard".
If you're on stock ROM and doing something like unlocking the bootloader, wiping the device, it will wipe everything.
I'm on gummynex and the optimus prime recovery. I should be fine then

Can indeed confirm that it saves the sdcard partition from a clockworckmod custom rom wipe. Yay! Thanks all!
Thanks for all the help guys

I'm not use to factory reset in recovery wiping internal storage. Because of this I had wipe all my titanium backups prior (now I know to keep it on the external storage).
But this means every time I install a new rom my internal storage will be wiped (unless I backup to external storage) ?

internal storage doesn't get wiped when you factory reset. i'm using CWM from the toolkit (the universal CWM). what are you using?

really? I'm using the same CWM from toolkit. I remember doing a factory reset in recovery and install new rom. I noticed all my files were gone. I'll do it again and see what happens..
I just wipe/factory reset from CWM and internal storage all gone.

Get off of cwm and use twrp. It definitely doesn't wipe internal storage.

As a heads up, I had an issue with the latest TWRP not wiping anything for me, verified it twice. I reverted back to 2.3.1.1, keep an eye on that though.
I think they released a new twp to fix that

twrp-2.3.1.4 zip. To update it do I just boot into recovery and flash that zip?

Was looking for this thread because I'm having the same problem. I flashed 2 roms with cwm and didnt have any issue with backups, the 3rd time I lost everything on internal sd. Is there anyway to get TB to recognize extsd? I know it did on my evo, but I can't get it to on the note...of course TB is to busy t9 help

I'm looking to sell my galaxy nexus and I was just wondering if its okay to just make a backup of my internal storage and wipe the whole thing. I'm not sure if there would be any hidden files that could be looked at (Google Wallet/other secure app files) if I just do a factory reset and wipe my pictures. All I'm asking is if it is okay to wipe the whole internal storage of my Gnex. Thanks for any help.

Factory Reset is enough!

Factory reset only deletes user data. If you want tot delete everything you can just lock and re unlock the bootloader.

Factory reset only wipes /data in a CUSTOM recovery. In stock recovery it handles the storage partition also

I want to format my phone to clean all the crap files iv accumulated. If I format through twrp, will it just reinstall the current rom I'm running? Did this before on my s4, just want to make sure. Thanks guys

Like internal storage you meant? I always do that on top of cache and dalvik wipe to get a full clean install and no trace of previous rom. To be on safe side always have nand backup when doing that.

Yeah like if I go to wipe, then select all except system or that also?

Factory reset, advance wipe, then I wipe cache, dalvik, system, data and internal storage. I have all my back ups in external card including copy of titanium backup for data. Then I flash any custom rom.
