Hi everyone. I, as many others, have been having an issue with my microphone cutting out during a phone call. I have a roooted Verizon Galaxy Nexus running the 4.0.4 leak, but it appears that for everyone who is having this issue it doesn't matter which ROM you're running or even if you're rooted or not.
[EDIT]: It per one of the posters below, this is not so much a "microphone" issue as it is an "outbound audio" issue. Unfortunately I can't edit the subject name to refer to this, but for me personally when I've been doing google searches on this issue the first word that came to mind anyway was the word "microphone" or "mic" anyway.[/EDIT]
People have been trying different things like flashing different radios, muting and unmuting, turning off voice privacy, etc., but it seems that nothing helps. Not even several hardware replacements or sim card replacements.
However, I did notice a pattern from different forums, etc. It seems that some people either have the problem all the time, or not at all, and it seems that some people reported that traveling to different metro regions affected whether or not they had the issue.
So I was curious to see if the pattern has to do with geographical location as an issue with Verizon's network, vs. hardware/software issues.
This poll has 50 possible answers, 1 for each state. Please answer this poll ONLY if you ARE experiencing this issue, and please only vote for your state if you live in the state's capital. For example, I live in the Denver metro area, so I would vote for Colorado. However, if I lived in Fort Collins or Grand Junction, I would NOT vote at all.
If you have traveled and visited another state's capital and have had this issue there, you can go ahead and vote for it as well.
It will be interesting to see if we have a lot of hits in certain major metro areas and none in others.
[EDIT2] Also, if you don't have the problem at all, go ahead and post a comment with your location. In fact, it would be interesting to see if people don't have the problem but others in the same city do. [/EDIT2]
Thanks!
I thought I had this issue just turns out my pinkie was covering the microphone its king of poor positioning watch, the way u hold the phone after changing the way I hold it no one complains they can't hear me

I had this problem on back to back to back phone calls this morning. Horrible.

My wife and I are both having the issue in Richmond, VA but I could only vote once for myself. She has reverted to an old droid x as she cant rely on the phone anymore.
Might be a little late, but maybe we should collect ZIP codes instead? Then we could use this tool: http://batchgeo.com/
Try watching how u hold the phone I'm seriose since I changed the way I hold the phone this is a non issue your prolly plugging the microphone

I voted. I'm in South Carolina. I'm pretty sure it's NOT a regional problem though.

If holding the phone different worked for you, then you don't have the issue this is referring to. This issue can happen with a wired headset, Bluetooth headset, on speaker phone, which none of these would be affected by how you are holding the phone considering you aren't using the mic on the phone. The people on the other end hear a series of clicking sounds, then no audio.

I realize you're trying to help, but you really don't understand the issue. The OP really didn't describe it properly, as it's not a "microphone" problem, but rather an "outbound audio" problem. I use mine at work as a speakerphone with it sitting on my desk, and I lose outbound audio all the time. Others have the problem with a bluetooth headset. I don't doubt that there are some people who have had an issue with covering the microphone hole, but that is not what this thread is about. This is an ongoing issue that people have been troubleshooting for months, and Verizon/Samsung is supposedly working on a software fix to resolve it (I'm not holding my breath).
I had the same problem on my 2 rogers GNs(GSM version)
after I upgrade my baseband to i9250xxkk6, the problem gone
I like the OP enthusiasm, but I don't think you will be able to glean any info on location. Owners are too spread out. Maybe in a few months.
I'm in Raleigh, NC.
I got my phone on release day and noticed this problem a few days later. I've since replaced the phone, then the SIM card (a theory that it was SIM-card related was floated over at AF).
After changing the SIM card the problem seemed to go away for a couple of weeks, but it came back with a vengeance.
I hate the idea of getting a "refurb" from Verizon (I put refurb in quotes because, based on the FIVE refurb'ed Incredibles I had, I'm pretty sure they don't do anything except replace the glass if it's scratched), but I guess a functional refurb would be better than an aggravating semi-functional new phone.

I can't help but be reminded of Steve Jobs.... "You're holding it wrong!"
I'm glad your phone is working properly but, as others have noted, this is most definitely not the problem we're talking about.

You're right, I was caught up in it at the moment and thought it would just be interesting to see how the issue maps out, but this little poll in no way is a troubleshooting tool, more of a type of infographic maybe?
The only fix is going to be a software update from el goog. can't wait for it!!!
I just got off the phone with Tech Support about this.
The Level 2 agent found an internal support document about the problem and read me what it said for the fix.... It says that the upcoming software release is going to cover this. It goes on to say that the tentative (dammit) release date for the software release is late March.
I don't want to trade in the new phone that I've babied since day 1 for a refurb of unknown quality if a fix is coming within the next couple of weeks.
If they don't release the update soon (which wouldn't surprise me at all), I'll probably just flash a new ROM & radio.
Flashing a new rom/radio does not help. I'm running nothing stock (leaked radios, CM9 Kang Nightly, Franco Nightly) and I still have this issue.
Good to know I'm not alone, Minnesota is currently winning! :-\ :-(

I was told the same thing by VZW support, but mid-march... which is NOW! I'm really getting sick of this. Ready for the fix and some info.
I have the same problem on the GSM version. Also Raleigh, NC.
hello world,
its been a while since i've been on xda for forgive my lack of knowledge and bare with me:fingers-crossed:.
i've had a G2 since its release, rooted it to the 2.6.35.10-virtuous [email protected] #15(adroid version 2.3.3) and never looked back. This thing has been running flawlessly despite numerous drops from my hands(they dont build 'em like this anymore).
Last month I updated my radio to 26.13.04.19_M build and have been enjoying the batterylife.
Alas, just yesterday i've noticed that no one can hear me on the other end of a call, although i can hear them just fine. After tinkering with it i realized it was indeed my microphone and my ribbon was indeed torn. i replaced it myself promptly and still didnt work, took it apart again, and put it back together incase i forgot something. Everything else works fine so u can imagine my dismay(i can do everything but make phone calls )
The microphone still has issues and can barely hear me when im screaming at it, but even then ppl on the other end hear a faint voice.
so i ask u fellow "Vision" owners, what can i do to fix this?
(im also aware that 3 other members have experienced a similar dilema, 2 of which are recent, but no remedy has been brought about)

ok guys and girls heres my problem, i work in an automotive shop 8 bays , i have a very large snap-on tool box which i have mounted a computer surround sound system to . every morning 6 days a week i plug my phone in and we all listen to pandora all day. now the plus to this is i can hear every phone call, email or alarm that comes to my phone . used this set up for 2 years with my rezound . well with my new One the music sounds great but alarm sounds and ringtones are very low to the point that i almost cant hear them .also on my rezound music would kinda... not pause but stop for a second when notifications came through then come right back on . the One does not ,the notification just plays on top of the music. does anyone else have this problem ? all my sounds are set to the maximum . im thinking its some sort of programing error and was hoping a dev could fix it ?
thanks guys

Notifications alarms and such (minus phone calls) are very muted without a doubt. Sometimes when I go walking and listen to my music I have issues with that if someone texts or something.

Glad to hear its not just my phone . Now is there anything we can do to fix it ?
Drives me nuts too. Luckily I have the Pebble watch so notifications vibrate my wrist, but I still miss a few when I'm driving down the road streaming music and charging my watch. Looking for a fix or workaround as well.

That doesn't effect them when music is playing. Its been an issue on every HTC phone I've ever owned. They are severely muted when music is playing.

and all i have had is htc since my first smart phone ,my last being a rezound and the ringtone and alarm sounds were louder than the music .granted nav was lower since htc or google (not sure who) took out navigation volume .
there has to be a fix . this is very annoying

I may be S-OFF but it came with a price-tag, 8 days of stress. Monetary value was also worth it, but being ignored for 2 days while other phones that got there 1-2 days after mine did with no response, not a great process for ME personally, please don't attack me again ppl this is MY experience and opinion.
But,
trust me bro if I knew how I'd do it.. I always do..
I have and never will mess with the audio ESP on this phone.
I could turn it too high because I have no idea what I'm doing and blow all your speakers.
I don't ever claim to be Mr. Amazing DEV either, in-fact according to XDA I am only a Recognized Contributor.
but I digress. I have limited skill. I am not one that can write original code.
I am decent with smali, but again cannot write original code, most devs can't either, in-fact prob 99%.
Does this mean I am worthless as a Developer, IMHO, no, as it's proved on the SG3/SG4.
Basically, my skill range only goes so far, I really do wish I could fix everything you guys ask for, but the reality is, I just am not that talented to accomplish the task, and I',m never embarrassed to admit it. I have an *idea* of where I would start coming from the S4 and call recording, but that entire MOD confused me, so like I said I don't want to change a value and boom there goes ur speakers lol
my notifications come in VERY loud compared to my s3/s4.. I have it set to less than half, FWIW

I think someone would need to use custom rom or custom hacks to do this. Definitely would have to be rooted to fix this. Something like the Viper rom with the extra tweaks it has might accomplish this. I know...this is not avail yet.
It is just a built in protection I bet. It thinks you have headphones on and some of the notifications can be pretty loud.

i guess that could be part of it, for ear protection . probably not to many people running a set of speakers all day for music .
And andy i meant no disrespect at all . sorry your phone got passed up and you were without it so long . i can flash a rom and maybe a little more .thats the limit of my romming abilities . i have no clue how much you know ,but im sure its more than me . so all i can do is ask . loving the rom cant wait for the next update . thanks again

wow, in how many different threads are you going to go off topic and bring this up? You don't want to be bashed for it, stop posting about it.
Where'd your thread go about buying a java card? You make stuff disappear better than houdini.
To the OP, I have noticed this as well. I'm guessing this will definitely require root at least. Maybe devs can incorporate a fix into ROMs.
Those in the know swear an exploit is coming, and that should help things. Personally, I'm sending my phone to colorado. The guy has been 100% perfect on getting the phones s-offed and returned. I think the longest total time has been 10 days.
cool thanks for your input .

hi everyone! I am seeking your expertise as I came upon this forum trying to help my son fix his phone. He's only 11 years old- but as we call him at home our "tech guy". He got a brand new HTC One M8 (carrier is ATT) yesterday and 3 hours later - the phone was "bricked" as I have been told. Apparently, (these are his words) he "unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev, then flashed twrp, then flashed supersu.zip.
I have no idea what any of that means but apparently he did something wrong because his phone is not working and we don't know how to fix it. If you have any compassion for a frustrated Mom who's trying not to be angry with her son -- I would appreciate any advice you can give on how to fix this.
I have attached a picture of what the phone looks like when we turn it on. I also posted this under the ATT forum too.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Going by the pic, the bootloader has been relocked. So that's a problem. The bootloader will need to be unlocked again. I would suggest heading over to Youtube, as I have found video tutorials the most helpful when I was learning this stuff. There are plenty of videos that are even specific to the M8.
Edit: I should also point out that a phone can almost always be saved/restored if it still powers on. So don't panic. It would probably be in your best interest though to find someone experienced to fix it. Trying to explain the process to fix it here is not going to be helpful to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. If you can't find someone experienced, then my best suggestion, as stated above, would be to watch some Youtube tutorials on unlocking/rooting the M8.
Okay. In all seriousness.
When was this screen grab taken? In other words, is this your current position with the phone?
Relocked... etc etc
Are you in the US on AT&T?
Your tech son needs to restore ATT backup.. Hopefully someone in that forum has it

UPDATE on my son
Thank you all so much for your responses! It is much appreciated. Believe it or not - this kid fixed it all by himself. Basically (remember I am not technical) he unlocked the boot loader then flashed a ROM onto an SD card and was able to load. Don't think I worded correctly - but I think you know what I am talking about -- it's fixed and working fine. WHEW!!
I guess he "retraced" the steps he did last night and was able to get it. Actually it's strange the first ROM he put on wasn't allowing him to find or pick up wifi. He found another and got it. This kid is good!
I will certainly keep the info to this forum handy because something tells me that I will be visiting again with this child..................
Have a great evening!!
p.s. I typed the wrong key -- he's 12 not 11 And - sure I'd adopt! But he did save up his own money to get this phone and only wanted it to do these "cool" things as he says to it.....rest of my family - we are simple and use Iphones -- sorry.
All I can say to this is Wow!!

I'm glad to hear everything worked out for you and your son.
It's great to know that you're letting your kid tinker around as he is. I know these are quite expensive devices, but we often do learn from our mistakes, and that is even more true when it comes to technology. I'm sure that I have a bit of a bias being a software developer, but tech is such a huge part of life now, and that is only going to become more so with time. So getting an early start as he is, your son is going to have a leg-up in the world, even if he doesn't choose this type of field as a career path.

Thanks!! He's very into all of this stuff and always has been from a very young age -- started with Legos at 2. He doesn't play sports and this is his "thing". He really LOVES all this stuff. He's actually really good and understands most things. As you can see - we certainly have issues now and then but overall we certainly let him "tinker". I really should write stuff down so we can laugh about it in about 10 years. We tried to limit his Internet time a couple of years ago and added a password on his computer that we had to input on his computer to gain access. Little **** put a keystroke logger on the computer to get the password. Then he somehow modified the main password screen to say PENIS when we logged on. The stories go on and on....... We will let him continue his technology building and hopefully he really have a bright future in technology!
Thanks for all of the input and support from this forum!

I was the same from an early age and always have been. I have taken apart or modified more household items than I can think of. I broke a lot of stuff messing as a kid, but now I have a lot of knowledge and can fix almost any thing properly.
It seems you are not so bad yourself with the technical stuff as most moms wouldn't have a clue or even be able to repeat what you have explained here.
Hi guy,
Not sure if anyone else has had this (can't find anything here, or with search engine, so starting to worry it's not software problem), but just the other night, was surfing then all of a sudden, I get this loud horn type noise from my phone... Certainly woke me up! Then stopped... Then no sooner did it stop, again it happened. I check, but my volume is almost at mute. So I close Chrome, and re-open, and haven't heard it since, but now I have noticed my speakers crackle and distort on certain frequencies.
I'm hoping this is just some software issue, that hopefully I can just update, or re-set, but I haven't come across anyone else having this problem.
Please help
Thankyou, O.

Do you have any mods (audio) installed ?
Are you rooted? Running a custom ROM ?
We need a little more information..
If you're completely stock then no it's not normal and I'd put my money on a hardware defect..
If you are rooted with a custom ROM and perhaps some mods installed it still doesn't sound normal and I'd try to go back to a custom but stock type ROM.
Least then you can see; if it replicates, then it's more than likely a hardware issue.
Did u push the speakers a little too much with a mod? Over amplify them or similar? Any water damage? Drops?
From the outset it doesn't look good but until you / we can answer the above we won't know more.
Hopefully it's just a mod gone wrong.
If not then it'll be a defect covered by warranty anyway..So a return to stock and RMA will get it sorted, so a hindrance but not then end of the world.
Let us know.

Hi Dladz,
Sorry I didn't put more info in before.
I'm totally stock (running 7.0). Not running away mods, or audio changes.
I suspect that it is just that, a hardware issue, I was just hoping not. I've never had an issue with any of my HTCs' before, nor have any of my friends. The build quality has always been the best you can get.
I guess it's back to the supplier it goes :/
Thanks for the response,
O.

Ah that is a shame and no worries, I've skipped info before as i'm sure others have and will
I wouldn't let it put you off HTC they do make some rugged devices and I swear by them, speak to a rep and see what RMA would take then get it done mate
All will be well, this wasn't your fault, I'm just thinking what could've caused it if anything?
Playing at loud volume constantly, music or audio with frequencies which put stress on the speaker??? Nah I dunno mate, either way it's not your fault so get yourself a nice replacement
Good luck fella. :good:

Thanks Dladz,
I've loved HTC from the start, and still do. I recommend them to everyone I know and meet. This is just one fault in the entire history of mine and everyone I know who has or had one! I think that is a pretty good fault rate.
I'm already hankering for the HTC Ocean ? Can't wait ?
Cheers,
O
I had this problem too on my HTC 10 one month and a half ago . I was on leedroid with nebula kernel and no other sound mod and all of the sudden the bottom speaker started to crackle and make many distortioned sounds . I suspected to be the kernel so I asked the developer , but he said that he hasn't touched anything sound related . No one , but only me, had this problem reported on kernel thread . I asked on ROM thread but the same.
Now I see that someone on purely stock had this problem. Only thing I can say is that where I live 2 months ago was a really cold winter and that affected the speaker.
I had send it back to repair services and now it's all good

HTC 11 will be interesting, wondering what they're going to do with the screen now that everyone is looking to go bezelless.

I just hope they don't put the home button on the back!
It is this same issue that´s making me want to upgrade from my otherwise still great HTC One M8. A distorting top speaker that the repair shop couldn't fix (they tried 3 new speakers, to no avail). It´s very annoying and I am waiting to see if the HTC 11 ticks everything I want in a smartphone:
- Full Metal Chassis
- Stereo Front Speakers
- 64GB of UFS 2.1 Storage
- 4GG of RAM
- Support to Micro SD cards
- Snapdragon 835
- Great low light camera with IOS (like the Pixel)
- Preferably with water resistance
Otherwise, I am buying the HTC 10, which is much cheaper now since it´s been almost a year since it was launched.
I dont understand why we dont even have a Evan Blass rumor about the supposed upcoming HTC 11, that is making me a bit worried...
Cheers
I have the same problem.
Now if anyone know what is the certain solution for this problem?
