[Q] Question about wiping data with TWRP. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm flashing my phone with a new ROM, and I'd love to clean my phone out completely. I noticed when I did the standard wipe data/cache/dalvik, I'm still left with all of the other junk from my previous install (draw something, photos, etc.). How do I go about cleaning out my phone without screwing anything up? I've been Google searching what the exact steps to do so are, but all I can find is people wondering how to fix the screw ups I'm trying to avoid.
I'm using TWRP v2.6.3.0.
Thanks.
edit: Apparently I can't English at 4am.

Bump. Anyone? I figured this would be a simple one for most of you guys.

I will format data also. This gets rid of the extra files from previous downloads that is not always cleaned by factory reset.

I'm assuming that you've also been doing factory resets?
If you have and that's still not getting rid of enough for you, there's an option in TWRP to wipe your storage (see the last paragraph in particular: http://teamw.in/whattowipe) and get rid of everything, though I've never done it myself. You'd obviously have to be careful about having your nandroids, backups, and the ROM you want to flash somewhere else ready to go after you've wiped.
I'd wait for confirmation from someone who's done it before giving it a go, mind you.

I assume that the storage wipe won't affect my SD card? That's where I have the ROM, etc. That's all I'm concerned about.
My options when I go into the "Wipe" menu are Advanced Wipe, which gives me the options to wipe Dalvik, Cache, System, Data, Internal, External, and USB-OTG.
The other option is "Format Data", and that says it'll wipe my apps, backups, pictures, videos, media, and removes encryption on internal storage.
I assume I need to do the "Format Data" one, but I'm just wondering if that will affect any of the important stuff in the phone, ie. recovery and whatnot.

Okay guys, thanks for the help. I just went into the "Advanced Wipe" menu, and wiped Internal Storage, as well as the standard dalvik, cache, etc. Seems to have done the job, my phone now has 10GB free with a new ROM, as opposed to 3GB free. I figured I'd post my results, just in case someone else wanders over here with the same question.
Thanks again.

[Q] Factory wiping before switching ROMs

Hey guys.
So for obvious reasons, most ROMs need wiping - which is fine. But when I got my HOX, it was semi-second hand (dude bought it, didn't like after a couple of weeks) so I did a factory reset wipe from the bootloader and I noticed it deleted all the pictures and music that were in the /sdcard/ folder.
Now, I have a TON of music and pics in there - filling out most of the 32gigs. Is there a way to wipe without deleting everything in that folder? Backing it up each time is going to be a pain.
Erm you need a pc to flash so copy the stuff you wanna keep to the pc befor you flash....

Ignore the previous post, but when you factory wipe/wipe dalvik cache/ or any rom related wipes, you do not touch the part of the memory that your HOX has designated as SDCARD, therefore anything that is saved to an area that you can access from the phone while its running Eg. pictures songs videos and such will not be affected, it only affects the internal section, the rom/internal apps/and system settings.

Sorry, missed one part, do not do a factory wipe from the bootloader, this is a complete refresh to the state it was in from factory, instead if you have rooted i would recommend installing a custom recovery, like CWM or something, so when you do the factory wipes and such, it will not affect the /SDCARD/ area.

With CWM 5.8.4.0, bootloader's factory reset option takes you automatically to Recovery screen, so all files on SDCARD remain untouched unless you format your SDCARD from recovery.
Thanks you guys!

[Q] ROM Issues

Had a strange thing happen to me today with my Skyraider Zeus 1.3 ROM. Had everything setup the way I like but then I decided to try and change my lockscreen ring. Found some from somewhere, suppose to work with 2.3.4 sense 2.1. Flashed in recovery and restarted and got my status bar with icons but no lock ring or shortcut icons or any way to unlock it. So I pulled the battery, went in to bootloader, then recovery and did a backup restore. Everything was fine after that...for a while. Then i plugged it in to charge it, shut the phone off (all the way, not fast boot) to charge for about 30 minutes, then restarted. When it restarted, I had just a red battery icon, no percentage numbers just my red icon circle. Then i noticed when the screen would time out and dim, it would never shut off. It just stayed on dim, forever (and no, I wasn't plugged in). Restarted...same thing. Pulled bat...same thing. Finally I tried another restore of the same ROM, but it went right back to the recovery menu instantly without doing anything, then tried 2 more backups with the same result. Finally I did a completely different ROM restore and it worked. When it opened I noticed the battery icon was doing the same thing, along with the display eventually dimming and staying on dim. Did a complete wipe, data, cache and dalvik 3 times, flashed the ROM again figuring it would fix it... but no. After a few minutes, the battery icon turned red again and then the display would time out (after the 30 seconds i set), go to dim and just stay on. After awhile it went back to normal again but then did it again. This has happened about 4 times in the past 2 hours. I don't know what I did but its got me worried. Do you think it could be some settings file stored on my SD card? Or possibly the batterystats.bin file? I am about to reset it and see if that helps. Honestly, I don't know what is going on. I just hope its not hardware related. Its just coincidental that after my bad flash of the lockscreen ring that it happened, so i figured it was a software issue. Sorry so long guys, just in a bit of a panic right now
just do a full wipe and reflash the rom

I did that. I wiped everything out 3 times just to make sure and reflashed the ROM, like I stated above. Strange though, I haven't seen the issue reappear since the first couple hours of my reflash, since then its been ok. I guess ill just wait and see if it starts to happen again.
Definition of Full Wipe
Just making sure you know what a full wipe is and allowing others to Search Full Wipe and know what it means. When I fist started flashing I wasn't quite sure what Full Wipe meant.
Here are the instructions:
In Clockwork Recover
scroll to mounts and storage
select format /system -> Yes - Format
---Done---
Select format /data -> Yes - Format
--Done--
Select format /cache-> Yes - Format
--Done--
Now you may flash a new rom

That is different from what I was doing. Though I am not new to flashing (almost a year) I have heard and read other posts through the months about people saying "do a full wipe" then saying "wipe data/factory reset wipe cache and dalvik cache". If this is the case there is a lot of people doing full wipes wrong. Hell I've even seen developers mention full wipes in this way. Not saying that your wrong, im just honestly not sure whats correct. But I am curious, what is the difference between the two? Is it because its formatting and the other is just wiping, or when its wiping is it also formatting at the same time? If that's the case wouldn't it be the same thing, just in a different way? You've peaked my curiosity
This isn't my list, but there are good explanations on the thread that I found, I cannot post the link due to my lack of postings but if you goolge: Full Wipe Spider
It should be the first search item.
Enjoy your new found knowledge.
Especially moving from Sense to AOSP, I format /system, /data, /cache. Usually, I do all three no matter.
I dont know but you could have problem with the battery or charger.

[Q] Wipe Internal SD

I've been using a ROM on my ATT Galaxy S3 that has been acting weird; maps force closing, black screens constantly, apps freezing for extended periods of time, and I want to start fresh. I'm going on a road trip for the holidays and would really like to use maps as they were intended.
I wiped all my personal data but there are still some pictures showing up in gallery and some app folders that didn't get deleted. My understanding is that this is all on the internal SD card. Is the ROM itself (AOKP 4.1.2) on the internal SD card also? If I were to go into CWM and format the internal sd would I lose everything and would the phone be unable to boot or would I be able to simply re-flash the ROM? if i were to put the new ROM on an external SD card would i be able to go back into CWM and flash it from there?
If I'm missing something feel free to correct me or point me in the right direction (a guide would be ideal). I've searched on various sights and can't find exactly what I'm looking for, everything seems a little vague.
Thanks a bunch and Happy Holidays.
Wiping your sdcard probably won't fix anything. Try this
Download the latest versions of your ROM, gapps and if you choose a kernel. Go into recovery backup your current setup, factory reset, wipe data, cache, and dalvik. Flash new ROM, gapps. Boot it up then boot back into recovery. Fix permissions. Then you should be good.
Brilliant. It looks like that fixed all my problems thus far; no flickers, no black screens, maps are working.
Thanks again, hope you have a good holiday.

[Q] Full wiping and residue files

This is a question that has been bugging me for some time since my technical knowledge on Android doesn't go that deep.
Whenever we do a factory reset with either TWRP or CMW recovery to change from one ROM to another, does that action delete EVERYTHING from the previous ROM, or are there some residue files left?
Every now and then, whenever I see that my device feels slow or having lots of small issues, I flash the stock Google factory image, which deletes pretty much everything extra, and start again from there.
Do any of you do this aswell once in a while? Or is it useless?
Any other tips to help my little bit of OCD regarding a clean file library?
Thanks!

No a factory reset doesnt wipe anything. In fact it only wipes your data (your apps and any app data). So if you want to start clean you must wipe: factory, cach, system, dalvik cache.

OP 5T Issues

I'm facing these problems with the 5.0.3 update
1)not receiving calls (the person calling me gets the "phone switched off" message)
2) weird static when I'm playing music on the phone speaker or on earphones when I get a notification
3) can't flash magisk 15.3 for some reason (this isn't really a big deal but the first 2 are)
Anyone facing any of these issues and can help me out with them?

is there any other way around it? i really dont want to go through the hassle of backing up my entire device :/
it is the fix for anything
this way you make the final cut without going through the working arounds
in my opinion your time is better saved this way
you won't spend more than 1 hour setting everything up again

what if i wipe the system and then flash the full zip?
i mean i have a lot of data on the internal storage and backing that up will be a task, so thats why im trying to avoid the factory reset
Clean installation does not require you to wipe your internal storage so your personable files do not need to be moved around.
However, you will have to re-install the apps and setup the configurations again.
