I currently have a hard silicone back cover case on my phone but it becomes extremely slippery if I don't continuously wash it.
The back is completely smooth and I am terrified of dropping it.
I need to find a case that actually has a texture or some form of grip and keeping it under $20.
Otterbox Impact Case looks awesome, but I haven't found any good feedback on if its made from silicone that looses grip and goes slippery.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.
Amzer jelly case. Lots of colors, terrific feel, padded corners, textured grip area, good lens protection, and so cheap on eBay you can get them for less than burgers. And if you're someone who swaps out batteries, or has a car or desk dock that wants a naked phone, they're easily removable.
Thank you for the reply.
I've had silicone cases that would lift up when ever you would slide to one side or the other.
How are the edges on the sides of the screen?
Also, anyone know how the otterbox impact cars are?
Sent from my HTC Evo via the XDA app.
The Amzer just barely wraps over the sides of front face of the screen, maybe 3/32". The bottom comes up about an eighth, and the top is cut out to clear the light sensor, speaker and front camera. I've not had issues at the edges, but I can't say if that's how I use it.
I don't think the Otterbox is in anyone's hands yet.

Alright, thanks for the info.
I am terrified of the sides being lose enough for anything to slide between them and my phone and cause my phone some damage.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUT8179c2lc - at ~1:20 you an see the sides of this case being crazy loose)
I was hoping someone that had an otterbox impact on a similar phone would have a comment on if the cases texture or fit was an issue.
Thanks again.

The Amzer isn't as thin. I've not had the pull-away issues, but then, I won't carry a glass phone in a pants pocket, either. I usually carry mine in my shirt pocket.

Looks like they're going for about eight bucks on eBay, including shipping.
Hi again,
I added grip tape (left over from a skateboard deck) to my current case...lol.
It serves its purpose very well, but looks awful.
I have a chance to get the Platinum Case (Best Buy) for $10.
Anyone have any comments on this one?
Does it go slippery or feel like it could slip out of your hands?
EDIT: I just bought the case. I read some good reviews on it... guess I'll see once it arrives.
Hi all, I am looking for a new case for my Vibrant. I currently have the "Officially the best Case.." but unfortunatelly it is falling apart after a good 1+ year run. Now I am looking to replace it with the same one or with something better (have not been keeping up)
Looking at the "Officially the best case.." I do not see any current links for it. And I have to say that I am limited to purchasing a case from ebay and worldwide shipping. Can you guys recommend something?
I would recommend any type of TPU case. I have one, and it has lasted me 1+ years. Absorbs shocks well and is relatively thin. There are a bunch on eBay.
I am looking at some black TPU cases, but on the poor images they put, I cannot see if there are buttons, cut out buttons on the actual case.. For example this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-New-T...ccessories&hash=item20bdf50ab6#ht_2636wt_1392
I do not see power and volume buttons on the side..
From what I know, I doubt that any will have cut out buttons. But you could make the holes yourself.
Ya, ok, not cut out buttons, but at least take the shape of the buttons...so you can distinguish them where hey are by touching the phone..
The cases will have protruding buttons for the places where the buttons are located. I hope you get a good case.
You should get the otterbox. I've had mine since it came out and it still looks like new. Dropped it a couple of times and you'd never know to look at it. I'm sure that you can find it on ebay.
I just got the Trident Aegis case. It looks nice and provides good protection (silicone + hard plastic). The buttons are also easier to press than before.
However, the thing is a dust magnet (what kind of silicone isn't?), so I'd recommend keeping it out of dirty pockets as much as possible. It's also not cheap ($25 on Amazon), but is worth it IMO.
I also bought a Mercury jelly case off eBay today, so that's a cheaper option.
3D0
The 3D0 case seems to be pretty good. I just wish it covered the entire back like the model for the SGS II does.
casemate hard case and screen protector keep my phone mint, and very thin. Was $35 and I have a picture from my wedding on the back that i constantly get comments about. Had it a year and hardly shows scratches.
I'm returning my Trident Aegis. The plastic started chipping off and I wasn't really a fan of the dust it attracted.
I'm using the Seidio innocase now. Seems kind of flimsy, but is a lot lighter and thinner than the Aegis.
Get a TPU. It protects from scratches and dropping quite well, I'm reluctant to buy any other kind of case. I haven't seen any TPU cases with the buttons cut out. They're one piece units that are hard to rip, tear and really damage in any way. And all the functions of the phone are still easily accessible. The buttons may feel a little hard to press at firsts, but you get used to it. I bought one like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/TPU-Silicon...576411?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3371ccc19b
Trident Cyclops here. Available on ebay starting at $17.50 shipped and it is a tank. I did remove the built in screen protector as it annoyed the crap out of me. Gorilla glass is awesome and as far as I am concerned I do not need a screen protector.
My only gripe is getting it into and out of my pockets the silicone does tend to grab the cloth.
I have the Otterbox and would highly recommend it. It has good shock protection with an outer layer to prevent scratching. The silicone layer does attract lint but good luck finding one that won't!
As I understand it, the silicone cases are more environmentally friendly than the TPU. I've been using silicone, rotating through 6 colors (liturgical) seasonally, and have dropped my phone more times than I can count. It just bounces. Not a scratch to be seen, and given the softness of the silicone, it does a better job than most non-water resistant cases at keeping things dry. And, like Martha Stewart's silpats and silicone lubricant, nothing, but nothing sticks to it. Yes, it's a bit rubbery, but I can put it in the back pocket of some jeans I probably should finally put in the skinny-pants bin as easily as without the case. That's pure silicone, which isn't TPU. TPU is pretty plastic-y, rather than rubbery, usually, but it depends on what other, er, crap you put in it. I think the folks selling it don't care what kind of plasticized, probably-a-little-toxic material their selling, they just want to move them.
What I like most about it, though, is that it stays on when I want it to, but I can pop it off in .75 sec. OK, then there's the price...
Thansks for the info. I need back case asap. This thread helped.
i hope im not too late into recommendations but a silicon case should be the best choice, the vibrant is an extremely tough phone and hard cases would be almost a waste( plus the overall thickness will increase greatly)...
My case is a hard case and is very thin, the silicone case is good unless you carry your phone in your pocket. Then you get to experience lint and your pocket turning inside out whenever you need your phone . I recommend casemate hard cases, you can customize them.

This is a pro/con list based on MY PERSONAL preferences and use. Both cases offer extreme protection, but that is where the similarities stop. There are other similar threads, mostly "box openers", that are helpful but I didnt see a "real world use" thread of the two cases. I will also update the thread as/if I think of more things. Comments are welcome if you have one of the cases and can think of something I missed. Questions are welcome I will try to answer them the best I can.
Otterbox Defender
PROS
beltclip - covers all the screen, easy to get in and out
Power/Volume button covers - silicon, much better to me
gripable back - set it on any surface, its not moving
doesn't cover LED notification light
CONS
hard plastic "clips" are flimsy and easy to break, I broke one
my VZW GN w/ OEM extended battery just never felt like it fit it quite right, it was tight
no kickstand
cant use accessories (docks and such) with the case on
silicon outside peals off casing as you put it in and pull it out of your pocket
silicon outside gets loose after a month or two
attracts dirt and dust
built in screen protector, trap dirt and dust inside the case and possibly scratch your screen, or touch it on the inside and have a built in fingerprint
Trident Kraken
PROS
hard plastic "clips" are strong and I dont see them breaking, definitely not easily
my VZW GN w/ OEM extended battery fits it perfect!
Kickstand!
Trident makes accessories (docks and such) to go with the case
silicon inside never budges, not even when pocketing it
thicker silicon, hasn't begun to get loose on me in the month I've had it but its on the inside too so that helps allot
does NOT attract dirt and dust
screen protector included, but not built into the case so it doesn't trap dirt, dust & fingerprints
CONS
beltclip - covers almost none of the screen, not so easy to get in and out
Power/Volume button covers - hard plastic, makes it harder to tell how your holding the phone without looking at it or in low light, also makes it easier to accidentally turn the screen on when your not trying to.
back doesn't grip - this thing slides all over the place! Its not just that it just doesn't grip, its like its lubed up! my biggest gripe with the case.
covers LED notification light about half way
Currently using the Trident Kraken, liking it so much more than any Otterbox I've ever used. How do you think they compare in everyday drops though? Like which one would protect it more from falls.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I like it much better that the OB too. So far I haven't dropped the Kraken, which kind of surprises me given how slick it is. I'm not worried about dropping it though, the case seems plenty protective. I was never worried about dropping the OP either. Right now I would have to say that drop protection is a tie. The one difference I might foresee is the Kraken itself scratching on the hard plastic outside, but maybe not. And I have no doubt that the phone would be safe, that's what is important to me. It would be nice to see side by side drop tests higher and higher till one breaks just to know, lol. But I would say both cases will take a good beating before the phone gets hurt.
Right now I have the Silacrylic. I like the protection it provides and it's the thickest case that I can live with. I don't like how hard the silicone around the top and bottom edges makes the phone difficult to get in and out of my pocket. Two other cases interest me; the Faxion and the NGP.
The Faxion may be just what I'm looking for. It looks similar to the silacrylic but without the silicone. Is it still protective? I've never had a TPU case. Does it actually absorb shock like silicone or is it a big step down in protection? Also, the front rim seems very tiny compared to the silacrylic in the images that I've seen. The front rim seems like it's the single most important part of a case, so I hope it's still enough to keep the screen off of the ground on rough surfaces like sidewalks. If not, then I'm not sure I see a purpose in having such a bulky case at all.
I would be inclined to get the NGP. it seems that if the Faxion isn't that protective, then I might as well step down to something very slim. It looks like it would still help with falling on linoleum and wooden floors at home and home is really the only place I drop my phones. I'm the least caution there. I think the grip of the silacrylic is the reason why I haven't dropped my GS3 at all yet. I think the NGP would provide that function as well. How is the front rim on the NGP? Do you think the case would protect against drops around the house? I know about the buttons and I'm unconcerned.
Thanks for reading my long post. Do you have any advice?
Can anyone recommend the thinnest case/screen protector etc that will protect the phone incase it were to drop. All the one's I've seen still take away so much from the look of the phone, and make it look thicker. All of my previous phones including my current galaxy nexus have always been naked. The gnex has dropped on concrete and been fine, however the n5 doesn't look like it can take a fall at all.
I've stumbled across the Poetic Bordering Bumper. This looks like it's very thin. Has anyone had any experience with them before, I have no idea if this would protect a fall?

Thanks
Sympathy bump
The Poetic bumper doesn't clear the camera on the back. So laying the phone on it's back could potentially scratch the glass there. I wouldn't recommend it.
I've tried the Spigen Slim Armor, the Diztronic Nexus 5 case, and the official Nexus 5 case. Of the three the Diztronic is the easily the most svelte and closest to the shape of the original phone. I do like the official case... but no doubt it's way overpriced and it does add substantial girth to the sides of the phone. I returned the Slim Armor. It's not slim and it was flawed. At $10 on Amazon the Diztronic case is easy to recommend.
Never saw the point of worrying about the camera lens on the back. Does it stick out a little bit on this phone? Sure.
I've never used a case on a smartphone and any of the phones I've had in the last 4 years the screens looked perfect after keeping them in my pocket when I wasn't using them. Things that are hard (gorilla glass is relatively hard) are really difficult to scratch. (Being brittle, ie: shattering is another story)
Your keys won't scratch them, (the glass is harder) neither will coins, and the like. The main common material that can scratch the glass is sand. (quartz is significantly harder than the screen)
So yeah, if you live in California or Hawaii or something...you might want a FULL cover...otherwise personally it's not something you should really worry about. You spend all this money on a nice phone, with a nice feel to it...ENJOY it.
(And no, I have no idea if the glass on the camera lens is the same as on the face...personally it wouldn't surprise me if it was even harder...since ya know, it's smaller (harder but more brittle materials can be easily strengthened by being thicker) and doesn't require a touch interface)
My combo is Rhino Shield (protect from direct impact to the screen) + dbrand frame skin (protect from dents).
Also, the phone seems to be quite durable if the point of impact is on the sides, according to Android Authority's drop test.
I'll try this just for 5$ http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Goog...PC-Combo-Cases-For-LG-Nexus-5/1504212977.html
I'm very happy with this case, Ringke Slim. I tried a few others and they were either too bulky or hurt my ear. I can also still use the nexus wireless charger.
The diztronic case adds very little in size and even has a soft touch very similar to the nexus 5
The little black magnetic ring around the camera acts as a bit of a lip. I still think they should have made the camera like the n7. Love the poetic bumpers BTW

The Diztronic case looks chunkier than the rinkge slim to me. Am I being blind?
Ghost and Jeff - You both have the bumper right? Is it true what I've read about the buttons being rubbish?

Yes the buttons are wack. The volume isn't as bad as the power button but they still both have very little feedback. They work well though but I'm hoping that poetic will fix the bad feedback on the buttons.
