What's the trick to the lte modem list ? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I flashed Darthstalker rom and tried 4.3 leak...
I have the Metro t999n All the 999 roms flash fine But the Edge" and Lte icon isn't there.. I understand you can flash any t999 rom to the lte capable phones but Not the opposite.
Its my understanding t999L and t999n modem/radio zips are compatible with t999 roms.
I tried to flash one of doc holidays Lte modems thats claimed to be compatible to enable lte on the t999n running any 999 rom and still get no Data besides edge.

The modems for T999L/N DO NOT AS IN NOT meant for T999. That's fastest way to brick.
Now having said that, before we get ahead of ourselves, kindly elaborate what was the basis for you concluding that there is no LTE ? Would it be just the lack of Icons on the Notification Area or something more (such as true speed test)?

flashing modems between the T999 variants doesnt actually brick. you just get no service.
if you have a T999L/N, and flash a T999 based rom, you should be able to still get LTE from the N or L modems. Depending on the rom, it just may not display in the statusbar.
start a download, check settings, about device, status, network type for your true connection.

I used to think Flashing T999 modem to T999 L or N is ok. The reverse isn't. I guess you learn something new everyday.
Thanks Doc.

Actually I never stated my question in the manner In Which you took it as and answered... my issue is the opposite I'm not flashing t999n or L modems on a t999 device I'm flashing t999 based roms on the t999N/L device
When the flshsing is complete its just signal bars no sign of a 4g icon or lte either. .. even when mobile data is on .
That's why I asked does it require flashing a modem or kernel and modules or From what doc holiday says that just cause we see no icon we still may have data...
Its just a simple question really..
What do I need to do because the 999 roms I happened to flash are both 4.1.1 which I assume won't work with a 4.1.2 md7 kernel or modem

Funny but strange..ive never seen any device or heard of one actually getting true data with working Web without the visual icon of Lte, 4g, 3g edge 1x or g Icon Actually displayed.
Just signal bars usually means signal for calls.

i cant say one way or another on the 4.1.1 roms, but this is all covered a few times in the T999L thread. T999 roms cannot display lte because they dont even include the icon i dont think. lots have confirmed by looking at settings that they do indeed have lte. even if it doesnt say so in the statusbar.
pre-4.3, it should not matter what modem you use. if you fibd otherwise thrn you will just have to stick to 4.1.2 roms. others have reported it works fine either way.
so if you have a T999L and flash a T999 rom, but cannot get LTE, try another rom. if you still cant get lte, the problem may lie with your device and or setup.

Or is it the actual stock radio
Awesome! Thank you so much for this Mr.X.

I'm not sure fi wifi calling requires the tmobile modem, so it's really up to you guys to test and report in. What i can tell you is these modems will not damage your device.
they all work for me on telus (with exception of the DoMoCo one, since have no networks it supports here) However using the tmobile and rogers radio cut my HSPA+ speeds down to HSPA as the radios appear not to support dual channeling of HSPA on 850/1900 like telus needs.
for some reason it wont install on CM7 i have tried CWM and ROMmanager, no go on either, its the Tmobile vk1 radio

Diffrent radios might increase reception in some areas, increase download speeds and might improve battery life or they can do the opposite and be detrimental to recepition, download speeds and battery.... Users results may vary. Flash and test for your self.

How sure are we that flashing modems through cwm is 100% safe? I know on a lot of other phones that while it is possible, its said that it is not safe. Correct me if I'm wrong but I just wanna be sure.

Generally fastboot is the safest method because of the bit check before flashing but I run the G2/ HTC Vision radio thread and as long as the MD5 matches it pretty safe, out of over 10000 downloads of my G2 flashable radio zips I think ive only seen 1 brick but even that one couldnt 100 percent be connected to the flashable zip so in general I thinks its very safe.

T-mobile + Telus = 3g ?

I was wondering, i have been trying different roms for a couple of days and i noticed that if i dont use TELUS roms, i do not get a 4g logo on my screen.
It's always on 3g. Is it actually runing at 3g or is it just a bug since im using a T-mobile rom on a Telus phone ? Is it actualy runing 4g ?

Thank you for clarifying !
I am showing HSPA:11 is this 4G?
If not what radio and tweaks do I need to make. And what are some working links?
I have been searching for the Blaze 4G radio (not sure which version I need), which was suggested by many as the best radio for TELUS users, plus any tweaks. But none of the links work.
I am with TELUS. Using the lastest Darkside Kernel, AOKP milestone 6, LLE4 radio.

I understand that 4g is really 3.5g. My question is what is the best radio and tweaks for a T-989D in the Toronto area.
And working links to the radio.
I already understand that in these ROMs, H is the symbol for 4g (3.5g). Also the speed on custom ROMs isn't as good as Stock.

Oh that wasn't directed towards you, that was more towards the general concern of op's.
Regarding radio it really is random, some user's opinions on radios differ from others even though they're in the same area. I wouldn't focus on the speed and focus more on the latency because where's the point of having fast speed when half the time I'm waiting for a response (ping). You can go into some of the custom roms thread, some have modded radios ready to flash. Check out tdj's thread he has like 3.

[Q] Best option for AT&T phone on T-Mobile

So I am new to GSM phones anyway but I just got an AT&T GSIII and I am using it on T-Mobile. I am a Sprint user initially (rooted Gnexus) and testing T-Mobile in an area I frequent to compare if it is worth switching.
My questions is I am already downloading the root kit and ready to run a ROM but should I use a T-Mobile Rom or an AT&T Rom. Also not sure if I should be asking this in the T-Mobile general section. Any advice would be great.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
If its an ATT phone it should have an ATT ROM. (I've never tried any other carries so anyone else correct me if I'm wrong)
Just set your APNs to tmobiles APN and you should be set.

You can use any Rom that states the option for picking tmobile or att in Aroma installer
Also I can verify you can odin a stock T-Mobile tar file onto the i747 and get perfect working 4g and wifi calling.
Flashing strictly t-mobile roms may be another problem.
A few good roms for T-Mobile users on the att i747 @re
Wicked Rom v10
And T-Motion both in att android dev.
Make sure to choose t-mobile as the carrier when u set up aroma install on the i747 if you use tmobile sim..
The reason the roms all works across the t999 @i747 is because the phones are so identical and the build props have been tweaked/edited to create working roms on a completely diff carrier device.

You should have no problems flashing T-Mobile ROMs on there, and you can always flash back to an AT&T rom if it doesn't work.
You will need to follow these instructions to get it to flash though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45813646&postcount=2

Wondering if you ever got this done and working with WiFi calling.
I have this funky i747 in a T999 case thing going. I'm running an ATT stockmod ROM on it, but thinking of flashing a T-Mobile ROM on it
This one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2501303 - though I've been advised not to flash the modem it says to flash ... last time I did on this phone I lost IMEI ... upside is this time the NVitems data has been backed up). At any rate, I haven't tried it yet. Word is it'll either work or it won't, and I can flash back to the ATT stockmod I'm using if it doesn't. But I'm a little leery of trying it right now.
The reason to do it would be to get wifi calling. Otherwise I like the phone just fine the way it is. That's why I'm reading threads like this. To see what experience others have had.
I flushed with Wicked v10 :

[Q] Regaining T-Mobile 4G on Cyanogen 10.1 roms?

I have a Galaxy S2 T989 and am on T-Mobile with 4G access. I updated to Android 4.1.2 through Kies and the rooted, and when I'm running that OS I have normal 4G and Wifi action. I flashed Cyanogen 10.1.0, 10.1.1, and 10.1.2 and I lost 4G on all three, even though all of my T-mobile network settings (APN, network mode) were identical to those on my wife's T989 - still running official 4.1.2.
Someone over at Cyanogenmod forums said that I needed to update my radio/baseband. How do I do this?

Do u still have service, are u able to make calls and such? If not I can give u a link to the radio and u just need to flash it in recovery just like a rom, but if u can still make calls and such ur fine but most aosp ROMs like cm don't use a 4g icon so 4g would be equivalent to h++ over signal bars, I only say this because ppl get confused about the actual icon too and wasn't sure what u meant

Is there a way to update to the NB4 bootloader/baseband without flashing stock/OTA?

Simply put...
I know what Knox is, and what it does. I never had a warranty (2nd hand phone) so I don't care if it trips...
There's plenty of stuff on here about how to work around not having NB4 with modems, etc... NOTHING about how to GET NB4 if you aren't on stock TW.

My personal .02 cents, there are some advantages to keeping the MDL baseband, but as you mentioned you are not worried about it. Good luck.

I second both statements! I was also on the Amaze. What a great phone that was!

I am in same boat. Don't care about knox and at some point want to get latest baseband. Currently I am on 4.3 GE (DANVDH's). My bootloader is 4.2.2 MDL and I have the MK2 modem. Thinking of holding off till the 4.4.3 drops, course that could be a year by the time TMO releases it...
Does anyone know if I will need to go to the 4.3 MK2 release first and then to 4.4.2 NB4?

I wouldn't even bother doing a full firmware flash. I'd just update modems and flash a custom ROM of my liking. I'm on the MDL bootloader with the NB4 modem and running on TheSickness Insane KitKat. I have the perfect setup without 1 single issue.

Will probably do that in the short term - but that only upgrades the GSM modem not LTE

Actually no. We get LTE

Without upgrading the bootloader, the standard process DOES only update the GSM modem. Updating the LTE modem to a version that doesn't match the bootloader would create other issues. However, that doesn't mean that LTE won't work. LTE still connects and delivers fast speeds. I've never tried the new LTE modems myself, so i can't confirm this is true from firsthand experience, but I've seen in at least one place that upgrading to the newer LTE modem while on the old bootloader results in no data at all.
Here's what you end up with if you upgrade following the standard procedure in the modem-updating instructional thread:
MDL Bootloader
MDL LTE radio
NB4 GSM Modem/Baseband
It may just be a placebo effect, but once I updated to the NB4 GSM modem, data speeds even on LTE seem faster and my coverage is better just about everywhere.

I agree about the speed and coverage. When I was on MK2 I had 3 bars and spotty coverage. Once I update to NB4 I got full bars and coverage everywhere. My LTE definitely got much better than ever. It doesn't work the same for everyone. Some people reverted to MK2 because they had a better experience with it.

thanks crawler, that's what I thought.
Anyway I plan to upgrade bootloader at some time (to hell with knox) to get the latest LTE modem.
But before I flip knox the bird I need to check if my work email client (airwatch) is actually using knox. I know airwatch supports knox, I am just not sure if my IT has it enabled.
in the meantime I have updated to NB4...
thanks guys
Well , after update to NB4 GSM modem LTE signal strength shows stronger, but that's usually just a change to how the interface reports actual signal dBs and not a reflection of actual better signal strength.
Actual speed tests seem unchanged over LTE.
I will probably still do the full update once 4.4.3 drops
