hey guys so my sister bought the Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 (T-Mobile one) and she is using it in canada with the wind network .. the phone is nice but that blaotware is an noying (the wifi hotspot doesnt work ...) the wifi calling and ect ... now i do have some android experiance cause i own the G Nexus and its so simple to flash roms on here now what worries me is the samsung flash coutn and ect .. if soemone doesnt mind can you tell me which rom would be best, stock-like maybe performance increased? better batt life? clean, stock, slim, no bloat? ive downloaded the tool kit, id take the time to read but i want to set it up for her tmr and i have other stuff i have to do so if someone wouldnt mind taking the time pointing me in the right direction or writing me a mini-guide thanks!
First of all before you start going crazy, you can disable almost all of the bloat by going to Application manager. Unless your sister hates Touchwiz I'd leave it as stock. On the other hand if you're certain you want to flash a rom, there is an app to reset the flash counter called triangle away. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
Development has all of the links in stickies.
She can use a launcher if she doesn't like Touchwiz.
Personally, I would not do this for her - not to be mean, but because if she can't do it and doesn't understand the risks and responsibilities of having a rooted phone, she could get into more trouble than just having bloatware.
If she wants to root, show her a guide. Answer questions. Help her find resources. But the worst thing you can do is to do everything for her. That's great if you just want to make a quick $25 from a random idiot friend/coworker - but unless you hate your sister, I'd focus on teaching her, not doing everything for her.

well actually she doesnt know anything about phones, but i want to remove it for her because shes used my galaxy nexus before, she like touchwiz i just want to remove all the bloatware D: coz i.e. mobile hotspot doesnt work i thought maybe some developers would have fixed a kernel for better battery life (something to do with data my freind has told me) other then turning on and off she wont be using root other then me flashing a custom rom on her phone

If you haven't found it yet, go to Application manager swipe over to the right until you get to all, and click on and then disable anything that looks like bloat.
You can also use titanium backup or rom toolbox to freeze bloat apps. But I wouldn't root and flash rom for her because she can break her phone if she would start going in places she shouldn't. Explain her the dangers of rooting and flashing, show her what she can do and what not with rooted phone. Explain which apps should be granted su permissions and which not. Teach her basics of advanced Android phone use and if she decides to go with it then flash rom and maybe we will have new member to xda family
As to the rom, if she decides to go with it, I recommend FrostyJB. But don't rush with flashing it, my own sister almost broke my rooted sgs vibrant when she was using it because she had no idea what she was doing. So teach her first then flash for her

You guys are a bit exaggerating, I installed a rom on my sisters g2x and all she has to do is not mess with super user app. Someone who doesn't know about rooting wouldn't install a rooting app meaning won't have to mess with apps that gives you permissions. It's a big responsibility but not so much if someone is planning to stay on one rom forever. Heck I even showed her how to get into recovery and clear cache, fix permissions keep in mind she's far from being android literate. So as long as he explains the Basics she will be fine.

So which ROM Would you guys best suggest - something that is stock like - yet slim no added crapware, that is snappy and a bit customizable? the customization is not as important (maybe a lil)
I figured I would start this thread so that we can move all the non-development talk out of the development section. I hope people will use it so that when something that pertains to development is talked about it will be easier to find. We can discuss what kernels gives best battery life, which ones work and which one break things. We can post about our favorite apps, widgets, wallpapers, or how the weather is outside. Maybe someone will get help on an issue they are having. We can discuss anything within the guidelines of XDA, lets just try to help keep Jovy's thread clean.
I'll start, has anyone had an issue when coming out of sleep the screen is dim and you have to go into brightness and tap it to make it work? I think maybe I set my clock frequency to low or maybe I should be using a different governor. Another issue that bugs me is when I have ripple effect set and use a black background for my lockscreen the borders of the screen look slightly grey. I have read posts about this and by turning off ripple effect the color is like it should be. I like the ripple effect and I like black backgrounds, does anyone know about a fix for this, or does anyone notice this issue on their phone.
Here's the link to the Darthstalker ROM if you read this post and want to check out the actual ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014442
I am not the developer of this ROM, all credit for this great ROM goes to jovy23 and those he's listed in his OP.

I flash quite a few kernels, always making a backup prior so I can always restore. When restoring I always wipe like I'm installing a new ROM. Just to make sure nothing gets left behind.

Same here! I find 99.9% of ROM-related issues for us flashaholics stem from not performing a full wipe prior to a flash. I've been fully stable on every DaRTHSTALKER update, with LOTS of varying kernel testing, by using this method. Full data + cache + Dalvik wipe then flash than another cache/dalvik wipe before the boot is always a good strategy!

I always make backups for any change I flash too but the last phone I rommed was my g1. The vibrant was too much of a pain and there wasn't any good roms with Wi-Fi calling. I know these things are a different beast so I just wanted to make sure. Btw doesn't nand do all of the wiping process for you?

Much better. I guess I didn't even try the Rom tweaks on this one in the first place. Gonna see tomorrow how much better it will be. On another note, has anyone successfully connected to allshare play with another gs3? My girlfriend got hers (completely stock 4.1.1 w/no root) and everything else interacts except for that. Would like to group cast with her and I've followed the videos online to do it but our phones don't show up in each other's network, connected to WiFi of course.

Thank you for this thread, this is an excellent idea!
I've been a fan of this ROM since the very day the version 9 was uploaded. I got my SGS3 late December (this is my first android device), tried a few ROMs and stopped on this one. (BTW: a suggestion to put a link to the DARTHSTALKER S3 ROM thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014442 on OP so everyone new to this knows what it is all about).
This being my first post on the entire forum I was not allowed to ask questions on the original ROM's threads (and there are at least two I am following).
Now, if you don't mind a newbie question, here it is:
I am a T-mo subscriber using an unlocked AT&T phone. Currently I am on DARTHSTALKER v9 port for AT&T (here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087164 ). As the most of you I am eagerly awaiting version X1 of the DaRTHSTALKER, but my question is: can I just flash the T-mobile version or should I wait for when an AT&T PORT is available?
Thnks.

I would pm Jovy as he would know best, but maybe someone may be able to answer the question for you. I am new to phones also and the S3 is my first smart phone. I too have tried most of the roms, but keep coming back to this one. I do know that most at&t kernels are compatible, I would want to be 100% sure of ROM compatibility before flashing, might end up in a bad way. Thanks for the suggestion about seeing if Jovy would put the link in his OP.

I had something happen last night that I've never had happen before and maybe sometime can tell me what it was. I was restoring back after messing with a few mods that didn't work and when my phone booted up in the lower left corner it said "Safe Mode". I went back into recovery and wiped cache and dalvik cache, fixed permissions, and then rebooted and safe mode was gone. What is safe mode?
Thanks,
Todd
Edit: Should have used Google first. Safe mode is similar to computer safe mode. It only loads base os to allow for removal of files. Still don't understand why it happened, but atleast I know it wasn't something bad.

I WOULD NOT DO THAT! Although I cannot answer the question directly, every carrier has modified there own Galaxy S3. They are all completely different. I know that if you flash a Universal galaxy S3 rom onto a T-Mobile device, it will completely hard brick it due to a change in the partition structure. If you have an At&t device, I would still stick to the Galaxy s3 at&t roms even though T-mobile is your carrier.

+1. Unlocking your phone only allows it access to a different carriers sim card. It does not change the base of the phone itself. I have a Tmobile SG3 that's unlocked for my travels but any ROM I flash must be a tmo based ROM. In your case stick with the ATT ROMs so you don't end up with a brick, and enjoy this great rom
My s3 is stalking your s3....
Does anyone have a flashable (zip) stock kernel?
I have looked and looked with no luck, I mean I can always just re flash the rom, but wanted to explore other alternatives first.

Did anyone else just have a message from T-Mobile pop on the screen about something to with an update?
Just curious because I just did twice, but each time it stated something about me running an unofficial version of android.
After several restarts it popped up again except this time I was able to grab a screen shot of it. I hope this is really it.

Nothing for T-Mobile T999 in my area yet. Make sure you guys mention your device model, carrier, and current build too please. These will all make a difference.
There has been no kernel source released yet though and from what I've seen recently they've been releasing that before or at the same time as the updates. Doesn't mean anything for sure but figured it'd be worth mentioning.

Oh, and if you get the update and want to pull it so you can share it here, this is what you do.
Let the update fully download, but when ready choose postpone. Next flash twrp via Odin, then reboot into recovery. Use the built in file manager to copy the update.zip to your sdcard. I think it will be in /data/fota or maybe in /cache. If not just look around for the fota folder.
Or if you choose, flash the supersu zip after booting recovery, then reboot, install a root browser and copy it that way.

If you've flashed back to purely stock you can force it to check. Go to settings, about device, software update. What is your current firmware build? Were you using a custom rom when you got that?

Ok, so I'm not new to Samsungs and I'm not new to modding, but the Note 2 is different from any experience I've ever had. I've had a SGS2, SGS Blaze 4G, two different SGS3's (i747 and i9300), and now the i317.
So, here's the issue. I got the phone off Swappa and it was pre-rooted with a custom recovery already. So it really wasn't much to upgrade to TWRP 2.7 and flash CM11. All's good for the next two weeks. Enter stage left: busted USB cable.
I come home from work yesterday to find my dog chewed my charger. I have more at work, doesn't help me at home (45 minute commute). Naturally, seeing as how I haven't charged in a couple days, it died.
Got to work this morning, plugged it into the charger aaaannnddd nada. No charge. I figure, "I remember reading about this in the DN3 thread!" So I borrow the battery out of my coworker's N2 and he charges mine while I use his to flash. And my hunt for bootloaders begins.
I've flashed:
GN2_N7105_(4.3_MK5_permissive_kernel).zip (as suggested in the DN3 thread): no dice.
cwm-i317-ucucne5-modem.zip: again, no dice.
A couple others, I did have about 50 tabs open on my browser, and I've lost track of what I actively have installed.
With each one of those, I checked my Build Info with Android System Info, and it reports my bootloader is I317UCAMA4
I've even tried flashing a couple kernels, including AGNi_pureSTOCK-v4.2.4_N7105_4.4.2_AROMA-signed.zip and cwm-i317-ucucne5-kernel.zip (which coincidentally makes android.process.media and com.android.dialer crash consistently), and still nothing. This is the problem with a device that has a bunch of variations: information overload.
So, I ask the community for help.
What I want: TWRP / CM11 to function optimally and to charge while powered off.
What I need: the proper kernel and bootloader, preferably in a recovery-flashable format, but I'm not too shy to Odin if necessary.
Thanks in advance for your help
re: charging problems
I have two I317's. One has the 4.1.2 bootloader and one has the 4.4.2 bootloader.
4.1.2 bootloader- if I install a 4.4.2 rom, it turns the phone on if I plug in the charging cable. It won't stay off while charging. The charging works normally with 4.3 roms. I also tried this with the MJ4 (4.3?) bootloader.
4.4.2 bootloader- if I install a 4.3 rom and try to charge it with the phone turned off, it hangs on the empty battery charging symbol and cannot be turned on without a battery pull. The charging works normally with a 4.4.2 rom.
For my two phones and 4.4.2, the rom has to match the bootloader for charging to work properly.

I'll give it a shot. I tried the DN3v5, but was getting several FC's and some issues with LTE. No matter what I set my APN to, it would always revert to 3G preference.

Sounds appealing. I'll come back to it tomorrow, about to start homework now. College life stinks.
On this NE5, do I need the pit? And which portion in Odin do I push it to? I'm searching for that now, I know I saw it in a thread somewhere...

Well, oops. I flashed in the Bootloader slot. It seems to have took, Android System Info is reporting NE5 under Build Info. I wonder if I should re-flash under pda....
By the way, thanks for all your help, peoples. I plan on viewing every single thread over the course of the next few weeks (or months, depends on how my classes get) and writing a SGN2 Bible (kind of like what we did over at the Galaxy S Blaze forums). I cant say I'll read them all, but hopefully, I can sift through all the hundreds of pages of threads in a timely manner.

You can flash everything in PDA, including boot loaders. When you flash a single tar with the full firmware in PDA, it contains everything, even kernel and modem and etc.
The reason for all the slots is that some firmware distributions come with separate tar files for each part, and you can still flash them all together.
Im not new to the rom game but have a simple question. Less of a question and more a request for some tips
Is there any lists or apps (like Goomanger) where I can find roms that work 100% on my G2?
I hate installing a rom then setting up all my accounts and a week later realize that the gps or wifi isnt working right because of the rom.
I know I can read through the forum but countless times I download a rom thats suppose to work 100% and a week later I find a problem.
I did notice some of the roms on like Goo manger work better than just downloading one off the forum but it limited options. Any tips or is this just the nature of the game? Granted I have resorted to just rooting and modding my stock rom but its not the same.
Kinda what i have been wondering myself, i haven't found a custom rom yet that works 100%. If anybody knows of one, please let me know.
Super g2 is awesome and I hear a zvd based Rom is on its way other then the artifesto 2faced Rom.

To be honest, I have been on at least 1/2 a dozen custom ROMs and and feel the best option is stock rooted for me. I use xposed and the split window mod and that's all the customizing I need.
As supasanch24, said. Stock is not to bad. A little clean up though, and it runs fine.
