Am I screwed? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Ok so i have a nexus 7 2013 wifi
and it stopped working.. shut off on it's on and I tried to turn it on and
is now stuck on the google logo.
Tried recovery and factory white and i get this
(E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log) <-- like so.
Never attempted to root or unlock my N7 so it was stock everything when this happened.
People suggested tool kits (Wugs specially)
but i can't access the "Usb Debugging" or anything since i am stuck on the google screen.
Am I screwed? Do I have a paperwight?

Since you did nothing to void the warranty, just send it in.

My apologies forgot to put that i don't have the packaging or anything :/
my mum threw all that away without me knowing and well.. i was pretty upset with that. :/

I don't see why you would need the original packaging???
When I RMA'd other stuff(like a laptop) they didn't want anything but the laptop, w/o the battery.
Same with phones.
Did you contact Google?

The N7 far as I know its hard to brick, having lots of alternatives to fix it. I can't tell for sure (just trying to give a little piece of mind) but there must be some ways to restore your device. Youv need adb (Google SDK) and corresponding drivers installed. Im @bed now but I'm sure someone will be able to give you some steps to do so.
Good luck mate.

That contains the SN of the device and warranty card which Asus was asking. Since i can't get into the system not have the packaging to confirm that... they say they an't do a RMA :/

Don't adb require you to be in usb debugging mode? I can't use any adb stuff since i can't actually get to the tablet menues and interface.

use this for a factory reset and kitkat upgrade all in one.

You can try to ask the google for s/n.
Or just ask here for one.
Also my nexus doesnt have any warranty cards

How would google get me my N7s S/n?
How would it work if i got one here? wont they know it's not the same when they fix it?

1)Im pretty sure google records both imei and s/n when you sync device for ADM at least. You wont die by asking them
2)They will notice if checked. But, underneath the cover there is no any s/n or imei numbers. At least on wi-fi version.
So to check they have to repair device first.
Also, not sure about nexus, but my optimus phone shows the s/n in the bootloader menu

Mine does too and i gave that to ASUS and they said no that wasn't it :|
and idk but their techs are derps. I said i can't get passed the google logo and they still keep asking me to go to the settings and get the S/N from there i am like.... facepalm

[Q] Received Ebay Phone, am I screwed?

Ok, I bought a galaxy nexus SCH i515 off ebay. The phone was listed as verizon, all the information behind the battery came up as sch i515. However when I powered it on. The phone said activate samsung account. The phone matches verizon info on the back. I contacted verizon and they said most likely the phone was rooted and that the phone could not be switched back even after a hard reset (which i did). I have wifi so used that to get on play store and downloaded rootchecker.... it says phone is not rooted.. (did original owner just unroot phone) am I screwed or is there anything I can do to get verizon able to activate it?
1) wrong section
2) follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
after step 2, check in the phone status menu for the model number.
So i'm a noob and after running through all this I can still (and verizon saying that the imei number wasn't in their database) make this work with verizon... i dont want to get this into a boot loop or fry this thing.. sorry for bugging out... I just want to know if this will officially work... again my phone was verizon and was switched to a sprint phone (upon powering up it asked for sprint activation.)

I appreciate your quick informative answer but if i've already called verizon and they have informed me that the imei is not in their data base.... if i do all these steps and flash back to complete stock the imei still will not be in there data base correct? I mean I'm still stuck on this.... if I need to start asking somewhere else please let me know. Thanks
Just flash the factory images from Google. And make sure the ESN is good you can check it just Google search

Just to make sure. You are in the bootloader on the phone and you are typing in the Fastboot devices and then OEM unlock command in Windows cmd? Try a different set of drivers. Uninstall the ones you have now and click the link below. Install those and do the "fastboot devices" command again. The naked divers seem to give people the least amount of problems.

as is strewn throughout these forums....ADB and FASTBOOT use different drivers. just because you have adb working doesnt mean that fastboot is setup properly

Missed the X......
Now the phone will not even boot any more at all....cant enter bootloader.......does not power up at all.!!!
Jesus...what have i done.......
It here any chance at all to fix this somehow?
Hello and thank you for using Q/A,
because you can't enter bootloader, you can't do anything. You can try to send the phone to Google. Say: It didn't boot after OTA Update.
Kind regards

Yeah it's most likely a paperweight. Try sending it to Google. Flashing the wrong firmware destroys a phone as you probably already know

I am totally aware of that....
but somehow one must be able to flash the bootloader from scratch....
Normally via special software etc.
That´s what i was hoping for....
Only thing I know to use is a riff box to jtag it. Not sure if they have one for 5x.

Your use of the period seems rather condescending. And no, you as the end user cannot fix that. You did one of the few things that is unrecoverable unless you manage to get the bootloader to accept adb commands somehow.

Well. the bootloader is flashed into the phone from the beginning aswell during manufacturing. I work with electronics and software and i know there is always a way to reflash the bootloader. All the electronics comes in the beginning with no software at all, one only needs the proper software/hardware. Most probably by jtag....or if they have some other special tool for snapdragon 808.
Stupid of me not to see that the version i flashed was not for nexus 5X...and only for nexus 5
sight...
Good luck. Will Google not rma it?

Device State - locked

I know there are other threads regarding this but those included someone having TWRP already flashed and in this case I do not.
I sadly took a chance and bought a Nexus 5X off someone on Kijiji and it looks like I got got scammed.
I've own other Nexus phones in the past but was unaware of the OEM Lock on the latest devices and it is in a locked state and I do not know the google account to unlock it (as it wasn't my phone prior to this)
None of the fastboot/adb commands work as it is locked.
I just wanted to know if there was any other way I could fix this or if I have brick on my hands here. Any assistance would be amazing as this would mean I just blew my money away.

So you purchased a 5X that wasn't factory reset? Have you tried asking the previous owner for assistance? They might be able to remotely wipe the phone using Android Device Manager.

Sadly you may be right, but like any good thief he seems to be unreachable, so I unfortunately can't get the money back. I have checked the IMEI and it is clean so i should be able to activate it.
I just need a way to bypass the FRP (Factory Reset Protection). I've seen posts on this on XDA but they are for patches up to the March 1st Patch. I build I have is the March Patch and I can't seem to find any workarounds for this patch level.
In the event that someone has found a way please let me know as it would save me a lot of grief.
Thank you for your responses.

I don't know if will help, but the N preview may not include or may reset FRP. Usually OTAs only include the changed files but since the N preview was bricking locked phones, Google released full OTAs that contained everything. You could try flashing it with ADB while in the stock recovery.

I was thinking the same thing but I don't want to make the situation worse than it already is. I have seen vids from RootJunky showing that the N preview is bypassable and it can be done with a reset.
Will the OTA wipe all the data on the device?
Just to be clear are these the OTA's you are referring too? http://developer.android.com/preview/download-ota.html

Bummer. I was going to suggest THIS. But there isnt a 16 TOT file.
So you were able to successfully flash N from the stock recovery? And you simply couldnt get past the login screen? FRP is a *****. I had no idea what it was when I sold my Moto X Pure Edition last year. I ended up giving the guy I sold it to my password so he could unlock it. That was after about a day of searching for a workaround. Then my sis bought a G4 and when it arrived it was locked with FRP. We ended up finding a tool to wipe it out. Such a pain. Lol. Good luck finding a solution. Let us know if you get it working some other way.

I unfortunately don't have a sim to test with. The one in my current is a micro not a nano. I am going to contact a repair store tomorrow to see if they can assist and I will try it out.
Sorry yes I did exactly as he suggested and it didn't work.
It gives me the option during setup to setup like it was a new phone but then as soon as I connect to my WiFi it performs a check and states the same reset message.
Which is why I might be thinking that it is the 72 hour lock on and maybe it will go away once it is complete.

I would try it again. If you factory reset from within android, it should disable FRP, including the need to wait 72 hrs.

Sm-t807a bricked... Kies doesn't support

OK so the att tab s was rooted I, impulsivity, decided to try and flash Xposed through FlashFire. I mistakenly flashed the wrong zip though. I am now left with a tab that only goes to firmware trouble screen. My computer recognizes it, as does Odin. Like I said Kies is saying it doesn't support it so right now I'm stuck. Did they actually flash with odin or just fail?
That screen usually presents itself when something fails to flash.
They failed, I don't remember what was flash to cause that screen. I have no problem getting Odin to connect..I just lack the right files apparently. Well I had requested many times for someone to catch the OTA when it came, but not one person could be bothered to make the effort. So now you and others are in this unfortunate situation. [emoji19]
If someone with root can pull the system.img from a T807a running lollipop there may be a chance it would flash.
Yeah I saw you asked that a few times while I was searching through threads. I have even thought about replacing the mother board lol. I got the us cellular variant really cheap on eBay so I don't need this tab but this is my first brick out of all the devices I have owned. So it's a pride thing lol...
So would any exynos variant stock recovery work? I'm pretty sure I was on 5.0.2

It's unlikely any other recovery would work, even though it would be compatible, it will likely just get rejected by the bootloader.
However you've nothing to lose by trying.
Like is had said in your original thread... If you can find a samsung support store or even bestbuy (although the ones around here have no idea what they are doing), they can flash the original firmware for you... The same thing happened to me with xposed, except I installed the right one, it just bricked the tablet, which i suspect is because we can't get any other recovery nor unlock our tablets, all we can do is root them...

Wow you're right. I'm sorry I didn't even realize I didn't respond. So sorry for that. I tried those files and they didn't take, I cannot get into recovery and now I'm stuck at this stupid screen

I guess I'm lost.. you said odin recognizes it, so why didn't you just flash the stock firmware over?
Nvm just realized there were 2 pages. Did you try getting the firmware from sammobile.com?

Nexus 5x stuck at google screen [Potentially Hard-bricked]

*** The issue is resolved!!! Thanks to xda, the solution is provided in the link in the comments.***
Couple of days ago I got this OTA notification that Android 7.1 preview is available for update. As my phone is rooted I started the manual update procedure. After the flashing was finished, I restarted the phone and then I saw it was stuck at the Google screen. Just stuck, no response. Seemed unusual to me.
Let me tell you that I have been modding my Nexus 5 for about two years. I am familiar with most of the tweaks that can be done to a Nexus device. Nexus 5 served me amazingly. I bought Nexus 5x 3 months ago.
So, after it was stuck I restarted. Still stuck. I will tell you step by step what I did then:
1. Flashed the OS 7.1 again (I dunno why, the flash.all script doesn't work for me, so I always do that manually) - result is the same.
2. Last October update (NBD90W) was available in the folder so I flashed that - same result.
3. I downloaded the previous one (NRD90S) and flashed that - same result.
4. I locked the phone and unlocked again to erase everything (not sure if that's a good idea), then flashed the OS again - same result.
5. Then I tried LGUP and the tot files to give it the factory version. LGUP detects the phone, started installing. When the installation is finished and the phone restarted - same result.
6. Now that I gave it the factory version the phone got locked!
7. I searched google for hours but couldn't find a way to unlock it as the OS is not booting and I cannot turn USB debugging on!
8. Then I tried the default recovery mode (Android recovery, from the recovery screen Power + volume up) as it doesn't require unlocking the device. Wiped the cache and restarted - same result.
9. My phone is detected by the pc and ADB. So, I wiped everything and tried ADB sideload and get this error E: footer is wrong
10. I tried Nexus root toolkit. It detects the phone in fastboot mode, then restarts it and then it again is stuck on the Google screen.
I am extremely depressed!
I am from Bangladesh and there is no authorized LG servicing center here. So, I can't ask for their help.
All that I did over the past two years was the awesome threads of xdadevelopers. So, a big thumbs up for you guys . :good:
I learnt from the web that phone can be hard bricked if a wrong bootloader is flashed. That's impossible for me as I always remove the factory image extracted files after flashing is done from the ADB>platform-tools folder.
Now, is the phone hard-bricked? If it is, what to do with it? Will replacing the motherboard get my phone back? Any kind of suggestion will be very much appreciated.
Bummer. This sounds a lot like what I just posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/req-help-bootloop-7-1-1-beta-ota-enter-t3486957
I really hope someone has an idea how to fix this...
Like DC_Knight said, please try the TOT method given here. Hope it works.

Well, I don't get bootloops, my phone is just stuck at the Google screen and I can enter recovery mode (lying Android with red exclamation mark), from there I can enter Android recovery mode, where ADB sideload is available.

How about trying to get a replacement if you're still within the 1 year warranty?

Please say something about replacing the motherboard. It's very very pricey, so I want to be sure -_-
sounds like its hardware problem, contact seller to replace it. if not going to happen, then buy a new phone from a company that does have a dealer in your country to warrant. aside of camera, the specs of other phones at this price range are better
That thought is also roaming around my head, still Nexus is Nexus!
What's the price going for the 5X over there? It's as low as $280 here in the US which is easy better then it's original.

Try the tutorial here. It's little bit different from the original thread ,
as @bardhi92 said, THE MAIN DIFFERENCE HERE IS THAT AFTER I FLASHED THE .TOT FILE, I BOOTED MY PHONE INTO BOOTLOADER AND DID AN ADB SIDELOAD OF THIS OTA.ZIP
Well, for my case, eventually I successfully bring my N5X alive. The tricky part is to enter Android System Recovery (hold Power + Volume Up) after flashing TOT.

Thanks for this, it looks interesting and I definitely didn't try that. I'm at office right now, I'll let you know after trying this.

There was a difference in the method here and I didn't realize that before; as it was written at the bottom. Sorry about that. I'll try this method and let you know. Thanks!

Goodluck, and let us know the result.. :fingers-crossed:
A warranty is a warranty, it doesn't matter what country you're in or where the repair place is. People in Canada send stuff to the USA for warranty issues all the time. I'd get on the phone with LG until I heard what I wanted, but I'm a stubborn old goat lol.

Well, there is no authorized dealer here; I had to buy it from a local shop. So, there is no warranty!
