Dear all,
Seems some dust is stuck up on my i747s proximity sensor. I will get it cleaned at a later point, but for now I need to disable the proximity sensor. The phone screen just turns off as soon as I dial a number and wont come back up until the call has disconnected. So cannot access the screen while on call.
I am rooted and on CM11 (kitkat). So do not have the TW option to go and disable proximity sensor in call settings. There is an option to disable the driver using hardware disabler app but I found by searching that that is causing a lot of battery drain. Anyway if someone knows the driver name and location for the proximity sensor of i747 then please do share that.
I have tried a couple of sensor test apps and all report that the sensor is active but it has something close to it so basically the sensor is always thinking that its close to the ear.
So need any ideas to disable the proximity sensor completely or at least from being invoked as soon as I place a call. Thanks for any help.
Do you happen to have a screen protector on that's covering the sensor? It can cause the sensor to think its covered. Thus having your screen always off

Thanks for your reply. No Screen Protector on my phone. I have gone through a lot of search results and screen protector has been a common culprit but after hours of searching I think my only option is to disable the sensor. Long term I need to open the thing and clean up the sensor.

As you guys might have read my display got broken and i replaced it myself. However in the process I damaged a few thing. The home button does not work and the proximity sensor is broken. The problem with the proximity sensor would just be fixed by disabling the blank screen when calling. Can anyone make a odin package (cannot do update.zip due to broken home button). Or tell me how to disable this function?

Mine is broken too and now everytime i'm calling the screen turns black. Which is no problem except when you are calling a computer a needs to "2" to proceed.....

Used the free app ProximityScreenOff. Its in the market.
Make sure you select the Proximity sensor instead of the Light sensor in settings.

Dosen't solve my problem with screen turn off, during call.
I have a default proximity sensor, which I need to disable.
I can do it, very easy with miui rom.
But I have tried and tried with Cyanogenmod without any luck.

Hi all,
My light sensor appears to be broken on my phone, I put it to my ear when making a call but when i return the screen is still black.
The screen does not return to normal till the other person hangs up (anserwing mchines are giving me the rage lol)
Does anyone know how to fix it? or just turn that function off? Not sure why its suddenly broken.

yes go to settings and screen disable auto light

Take a vacuum cleaner and vacuum on the top left of your screen,around the screen seal, small dust particles can get in there and affect the light sensor. It worked for me... give it a shot!

Proximity sensor red faint light always on now , randomly turned on not sure why....

Hmm.. My quick research of this makes me think you have a rogue app, a sticky setting or a defective sensor.
Let's be sure we're looking at the right thing. Your faint red light is just to the left of the front camera lens, correct? If so, then it's a definite indication that you're proximity sensor is on and constantly taking a reading.
Is it always on, from power on to power off? Or does it turn on once the phone has booted up? Does it stay on long after the screen shuts off during idle?
This sensor is used by motion features and talking functions. Triple check that you don't have 'smart stay' turned on, or one of the other super cool gs3 features enabled. I'd consider turning them all on manually, rebooting and then turning them all off followed by another reboot.
Lastly, take a look at your apps. Any kind of app that involves motion or talking (Voxer, Skype, certain games etc) can activate the proximity sensor and keep it on. A lot of those apps start on boot and never go away. Close them one at a time, or consider uninstalling suspect apps temporarily.
As a hardware test you can install Elixer2 from the play store (for free). Its sensors section allows you to turn the proximity sensor on and off, as well as test the near and far readings. If all else has failed, it might be nice to know that at the very least, your sensor can be turned off.
Report back with results from everything and we'll go from there.

Well i was using Viber, when i turned it off manually, the red sensor light went off. So it must be ab application that is keeping that sensor on all the time. Smart stay does not need proximity sensor and enabling or disabling it causes no change to sensors. Hope this will help ya

Thank you so much for the awesome response. I didn't find any other similar responses on the Internet other then " oh that's just the ir sensor don't worry about it". I too have viber and I believe that was the app causing the issue because of the way it integrates itself with the phone, can't be certain because so many apps updated as of late but it is gone now thankfully.
I get this when I`m in a dark room. The sensor will turn on. The only way to correct it is to restart the phone.
Plausible Solution
I don't know if this works 100% of the time, but it HAS worked for me. Go to your Viber application, menu, and then EXIT the app. Viber seems to be the culprit, so if you find exiting the app manually every time bothersome, you might be better off uninstalling the thing. Click the Thanks button if it helps =p

Disable Proximity Sensor
I´m trying to disable my proximity sensor in GS3. I tried with Hardware Disabler and doesn´t work, and the Elixir2 can´t disable the sensors.
Does anyone know another app to disable the proximity sensor?

Howdy Campers!
Quick question about the proximity sensor and in call screen off. When i have this feature checked "Turn off screenduring calls" should the proximity sensor be active and turn the screen on and off if i have it up to my head??This is what the feature reports to do.
When checked the screen goes off and will not come back on (none of the buttons seem to wake the screen, only end of call will).
Any ideas??

Do you have a screen protector on or maybe accidentally covering the proximity sensor? The phone is supposed to wake when the proximity sensor isn't covered, not when the call is ended.

actually it looks like the proximity sensor isnt working well for anything....
besides the calls the air gestures (scrolling) stopped working.
I dont think smart stay works either....
i factory reset the phone still nothing
on the lock screen i do see the little white dot follow my hand around so not sure what to think.
any suggestions before i take this back to the store for a replacement?
So I've noticed my AOD isn't turning off at all. While I do have it set to "Show Always", it should still turn off after a short time if the proximity sensor is covered., as was the case with the S7, S8 and S9.
Could you guys please confirm if this is the case for your AOD too? Turning the phone face down or put it in your pocket (or just cover the top half of the display) for a few minutes, see if the AOD turns off. Let me know if anyone sees it turn itself off.

I suspect this could be a bug which Samsung might need to be made aware of, hence my request for others to test. Unless I'm missing something VERY obvious. Or Maybe this is by design?

It's a sad news for you. S10+ doesn't have a proximity sensor as a trade-off for the screen (sounds ridiculous?). And some features are like sh*t due to the lack of proximity sensor. I don't know if I can go through with this so-called flagship

Ummm, of course it has a proximity sensor.....
Try making a call to someone (use voicemail if you want). You'll see a little white flashing dot to the left of the cameras, near the battery icon. This is the proximity sensor: https://hothardware.com/news/blinking-white-pixel-samsung-galaxy-s10-feature-not-bug
Try covering it up while in a call. The display will go off. Because you just covered up the proximity sensor. Because they do have one.

No it's not. Can you check it on your phone with *#0*# in the dialer or any proximity checking app? The result is always 0.
I had troubles with the double tap to wake and the show fingerprint features, and sometimes with calls when my phone behaves abnormally. Then I checked and it turns out that S10 doesn't have a proximity sensor. Samsung did other things to replace the proximity sensor's function, but it has been much worse than before

tried it on a S10E, the AOD always stay on even when in pocket.
Can confirm on my s10+. AOD does not turn off in my pocket or laying face down.
did anyone notice the werid little flashing spot above the the signal bars? that`s the only place where when I put my finger over it the screen goes off during call

Seriously, it has both a proximity sensor and light sensor as per normal. They may work slightly different, hence why crappy test apps from the Play store don't work. And why AOD is no longer turning off in pockets.

Not only apps in Store, but the SS diagnostic mode doesn't show either. Check the attached pics of S10+ and Note 5 in SS stock diagnostic mode

Same here.
Tbh it's not really a trade off I'm happy with because it makes AOD a source of battery drain at this point. I want to be able to put my phone face down to save battery. Do you think this might actually be a bug?

Found this article which confirms the existence of a proximity sensor.

The trade-off might be due to the fact that's the sensor is tied to that blinking pixel and is only active while making phone calls.

Same here, AOD doesn't turn off when flipping it over or covering top portion of the screen.
I'm starting to think this is why they added the feature of AOD only turning on when you tap the screen once as a trade off for it not automatically turning off

I tend to agree. I carry my S10+ in my shirt pocket and have noticed that AOD remains on.
Additionally, if double tap to wake the screen is on, the screen will wake on in your pocket without double-tapping it. I have disabled this feature as its annoying that this is also buggy!

This combined with the lift to wake option interpreting placing in pocket as lifting and the ultrasonic fingerprint reader activating in pockets is giving us of a real annoyance.
I hope Samsung are aware of this and do something about it.. .. ..

Very strange... just tried disabling double tap to wake the screen and it didn't stop it happening... Doh
It's a bug, they forgot to link the older aod behaviour with the new implementation of this sensor, I expect it to be fixed in the next update, along with everything else.
I'm constantly getting this too. Even with AOD off and the option to not turn screen on when in pocket(can't remember exactly name) I'm still constantly having my phone turn on in my pocket. At work I get a break every 2.5 hours and sometimes 45 minutes or more of that it'll be on in my pocket. I've pulled it out several times and the emergency call screen be on with a lot of numbers pressed. It's definitely a huge annoyance. My battery almost died during a 10 hour shift because of this.

Hi everyone. Any thoughts on this issue? This still persists for me even though my phone is up to date and it's may already.
I too think that there's a trade off with the in-screen proximity sensor and the fact that the phone doesn't recognise that's in a pocket. Mine keeps going on while in it.
There must be a way to get around this issue but I'm suspecting we'll never see an optimal fix since the proximity sensor uses that lit pixel to work and nobody would like to see it blinking every second.
I blame bad engineering here. Thumbs down for Samsung mobile.
I blame the new in screen proximity sensor. I doubt they will ever get a fix for their first gen type used on our devices. It'll probably be fixed on the note 11 or S11. I hope not though.

folks, its a bug in Oneui which existed in all S10 and s10+... its had been reported since day one and still Samsung still unable to solve this issues till date. And they published an notice in Samsung member app, next update will be addressing this issues finally. so lets wait for May updates and see they really solve it.
