Ad blocker on 4.4 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Anyone found one that works well after the update? No ads on my phone (rom'd Note2) apps but they are all over the place on the 7!

AdAway works for me, works via the hosts file so it blocks ads everywhere

Try, making sure your SuperSU binary is up to date then clear the adaway's data in settings. Launch the app and download and apply the host file. I had to do this step a couple of times but once it updated without stopping/crashing everything has been working.

I noticed if the screen goes off while AdAway is updating the hosts file, it'll hang and the only way to get it up and running again is force stopping and clearing the app's data, but keep the screen on and you should be okay

Both Adblock Plus and AdAway are working fine for me - I use both, since they use entirely different methods of blocking ads. They never conflict for me, and whatever tiny loss of efficiency exists is a terrific trade for NEVER seeing an ad, anywhere.....ever.
They survived a non-OTA 4.4 upgrade and re-rooting for me. I lost wifi manager and the Xposed framework, but nothing else.
Nexus 7 2013 wifi stock rom, rooted, twrp, SuperSU, etc.

Is it in the play store?

I used to see it on my phone but not on my nexus 7

adaway and adblock plus run perfectly on mine.

Android Market 3.3.11

androidpolice.com/2011/11/01/download-android-market-3-3-11-adds-new-settings-default-auto-update-update-over-wi-fi-only-shortcuts-and-more/
Can't post the link, sorry!
link: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...te-update-over-wi-fi-only-shortcuts-and-more/
Installed this earlier today. Seems to be working good so far. I like the Auto update option over wifi setting. It also seems to be more responsive than the 3.2 that I have been using.
Sweet, my biggest annoyance with the market was how I could only chose between auto-updating and possibly wasting my data plan (minor I know but I don't NEED the facebook update instantly) and having to manually do it. Love how MIUI has the option.

mine is working good to on MIUI I wonder how much earlier did we actually get this update from other people who will get it from their carriers?
After installing this, I started getting "popup" ads in my status bar. After uninstalling they went away.
Did I miss a setting or something? Lookout scan shows no threat, but I can only assume it was this market given the evidence...
can someone enlighten me on how to install this blasted thing?

You should be able to navigate to it in a file explorer (like rootexplorer) and just click on it to install.
Yeah I figured it out. Search-fu is lazy today lol.

[Q] Ad Blocking

Can someone tell me why I still have ads on my apps?
I am rooted with one-click, installed Calkulin's rom 2.9.2 and went ahead and installed Adfree to see if it would help. Still have ads.
Never had a problem with the rooting or flashing the rom. I have also tried several modems trying to find the best for my phone. I currently have FC18 installed and it seems to be the best so far, Sat. lock is almost instant.
Thanks in advance,
Rick
OP where are you seeing the ads?
Did you run adfree and rebooted your phone ?
I'm on blazer and see ads in tweetcaster. That's the only one as far as I can tell
go to the settings in Addfree.

Add free works best while app with adds is running, hit home button, open add free, run add free, you should get a conf. No add present, do this while on wi-fi .
Works for me every time.

Tried adfree, adaway and rom toolbox.
Still get ads on some apps.
Oh well, they are free apps so can't really complain.
Edit: I found another post on another forum and it stated if the host file shows a bunch of IP addresses as "127.0.0.1", then it didn't work. Anybody know how to fix this?

Odd...that is precisely the core of the ad-block... basically any address that points to that, say ad.doubleclick.net gets redirected internally to the loop address, i.e. it wont be able to load the ad since its being blocked. It could be that the application is getting the ad from somewhere else. Try droid wall.

Ad blockers removed from the Play Store by Google

Seems Google says no to ad blockers: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...purging-ad-blocking-apps-from-the-play-store/
Here is the link to F-Droid as the dev of AdAway suggests to use in case anyone wants it: "AdAway was removed from Google Play. I received an email from Google Play that AdAway was removed due to "Violation of section 4.4 of the Developer Distribution Agreement." Thus, it will never be available on Google Play again. Please switch to the open alternative: F-Droid, and install AdAway with F-Droid" http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=adaway&fdid=org.adaway

I know. I was just posting to give a heads up. I flash a bunch of ROMs, and sometimes do clean installs (mostly dirty nighties), and go to the Play Store to my "ALL" tab to easily download my apps, and AdAway is one of the first ones I grab. Now it won't be found, so now we know why.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't realized that yet. On a related subject, do you know why one of the build in sources for AdAway stopped connecting today? is that possibly something google did as well. I suddenly started noticing full screen ads in some of my apps so I checked AdAway and it says that the ismeh one is not available anymore. It might just be coincidence but that just started today so I thought it was worth mentioning.
I have noticed this as well. I am getting ads as of yesterday. Only 3/4 sources works.

Which source are you using? I'm on 3/4 now, and everything is working correctly. I checked for updates, but it says newest hosts files enabled. Although it did happen once before. The way I fixed it was to FC app, clear cache and data, reboot, and re-download the blocking files (and of course reboot once new files are done downloading, and have been applied).
Like my original post said I was using the built in (default ) sources.
I found the solution through the AdAway issue tracker. https://code.google.com/p/ad-away/issues/detail?id=413&sort=-id
That issue has a comment which points to: http://adaway.sufficientlysecure.org/hosts.txt
which is a copy of the original ismeh host list, once you add that as a source it starts blocking again.

Yeah they put the host list that had been down back up, in the file itself the header even says "14-03-2013 Back from the dead"
Yeah I second TB. First thing I thought when I read this in the morning. Screw Google doing that. I tether and it keeps chrome on my desktop from showing ads. One of the best options about android being taken away. That sucks. I hope the developers for the apps keeps updating sources. Adaway has been great so far.

Since its open source, somebody is providing updates for the app.
And also I noticed that one of the hosts sources is back online

Adfree or adaway

hey guys...their is adfree and adway...does anyone know difference between either and which one is better....thanks for any help...
Adfree seems to have less issues updating on my Note 3. Both are equally effective, it's just a hosts file editor.

I've tried adaway a bunch of times on my phone, running various roms. I could never get it to work right. Sorta just hangs there when it says applying updates.
That said, I haven't tried the adfree but adblock works perfect.

Yes this is typical and requires multiple tries to get it right. It can be a PITA if you have to revert back to stock hosts frequently, for example.
Adfree does not have this issue.
IIRC Adblock is a Firefox extension that only works on Firefox. Ads will still appear everywhere else.
Another benefit of using the hosts method is tethering. Since connected devices are using the phone for DNS lookups, ads will not appear on those devices as well!
Never had a problem with adaway. Works like a Charm, but I also Use a DNS changer App

AdAway is open source, so it's the better option for transparency especially for a root app. I switched from AdFree over a year ago for this reason and because the AdFree developer refused to post ChangeLogs for updates (I HATE that).
Zero issues with AdAway either.

How to block ads?

Hey all. Noob question. I'm rooted with the latest Magisk + app (14.5 / 5.4....3?). I have a few modules installed, nothing much. There's a module called unified hosts adblock, but it requires doing some configuring in terminal that I'm not sure how to do to be honest.
Are you guys using this for ad blocking or another method?
I always use ADAway, just check systemless hosts option in Magisk Manager under settings first...

I'm using Adguard and I'm impressed by the result!
So no need for root for the moment especially with the absence of custom ROMs...
I also use AdGuard. It worked for me very well even when I was not rooted. It just has a key at the top of the screen because it routes all your data through a local VPN it creates on your device. When you give it SU access. The results are just as good if not better, minus the annoying key icon. You can use the free version. But I believe that my lifetime license is well worth it. They are an extremely transparent company when it comes to their software. They take prIvacy very seriously. I sound like I am advertising for them, but it really is a very simple easy to use application.
Thanks all! I installed AdAway last night after reading the XDA thread on it. I haven't done any testing on it yet. I'll also keep AdGuard in mind for the future. I appreciate the advice!

Have you noticed any irregularities with adguard lately? I've uninstalled and went back to the July build because it was destroying my battery (30% usage over the day) and used about 50 gb of data over wifi according to the data usage manager. I've only had the old build for a day so I can't quite tell if it made it better. I just wanted to know if anyone has also had issues. Kinda makes me just want to root and be done with it.

I used to use Adaway then swapped to unified hosts magisk module.
Open terminal, type:
su
hosts m f g
That dowloads the lists for adware/malware/fake news/gambling
Done.

It was just easier to use the magisk module when I got the new device.
They both do the same job essentially.
I'm not super clear on the root for this phone, it seems a little different from all my other Android phones. In the winter I like to watch Netflix from a treadmill, so I'm concerned about Netflix continuing to work. I have to get rid of these ads though and have always used Adaway. By using Magisk, will my Netflix continue to work?

I use Blokada which is featured here on XDA. Works pretty well.

If you're worried, in Magisk just go into "Magisk Hide", and tick Netflix so it hides root.
