SMS support for N7 LTE 4.4 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi guys, need some help because after updating to 4.4 SMS function using go pro or 8 SMS doesn't seem to function well? Did I miss anything?

Apparently the ability to set a default SMS client is completely disabled in the 4.4 factory image for the LTE Nexus 7 (2013). This appears to have been done at the framework level (much like tethering being disabled on ATT). Hopefully someone will be able to write a similar patch soon.
You should still be able to receive SMS via the BasicMessageReciever in the mean time.

tnx for the response. what a waste in upgradind to 4.4

It's awesome how there is now no way to delete SMS messages because of 4.4 so I have to root to kill them all.

I've tried every possible apk. Modified the framework-res.apk (fc's on boot). I'll look into it from source code. It's in the telephony.apk and framework.

Deleting the text storage should be easy fixing the default and menu is another problem. It's funny because I have the Wi-Fi only version and I was using sliding messaging to text with Google voice but it does SMS like it would on a phone so I still had this problem even though they weren't actually normal texts.

Connect to mobile (SMS, Whatsapp)?

Hi,
I just got my Nexus 7 a few days ago and am wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to connect the tablet with my mobile. What I would like to do is receive and send text messages on the tablet, routed through my phone and if possible the same with Whatsapp.
I know you can get Whatsapp working on the Nexus 7, but not with the same phone number as the mobile, at least not at the same time.
Tablet Talk App
This is quite nice for SMS and it also alerts you to phone calls.
Doesn't do whatsapp, but I have no idea what does
I use tablet talk wicked app
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
personally, i use MySMS..
I went with Tablet Talk and it really is great.
Anybody know of a solution for Whatsapp?
Maybe email the developer of Tablet talk and ask him about adding support for whatsapp
From the reviews I am reading, it's pretty amazing. Sounds good.
I sent a feature request for Whatsapp support - I'll report here when I get a reply
I restored my whatsapp to N7 by titanium, and receiving the messages on both devices N7 & GNexus

Won't the app give you an error that its not working?

he is right, just make a backup with TB on your phone, then just copy the 3 achievement to the TB folder on your tablet, do the restore with TB and it work, i have it on my Iconia A100 and my phone :good:
This app works flawlessy in my opinion.
Koush (ClockworkMod) has just released TabletSMS, works a treat. Easy set-up with a free trial period as well.

I'll give restoring whatsapp a try. If it's as easy as that...
Tablet talk is very simple and it makes getting text messages and phone calls fairly simple using the app. I barely touch my phone now that I use this app at home.

i also used the Titanium method. Do you receive the same message on both devices? When I send a message from my Nexus 7, I only receive the response on my Nexus 7, not on my phone. The same when I send from my phone, I only receive the response on my phone only. So in my situation i can not receive the same message on both devices. You can?
Mightytext
I've been using Mightytext. I really like the computer apps/notifications and that it uses my phone number. It works in the N7 browsers but no apps or notifications as of yet.

Would this work with the WiFi (non lte) version? Previously, I installed the MMS apk from my note 2 and it didn't work on my non-rooted nexus 7. I had to go with Google voice to get MMS. Any ideas?
If you don't have cellular service there's no way you're gonna be able to text. that's awesome that it works on the LTE model though, makes me wanna pick one up...
will we be able to make phone calls on the LTE version with an xda hack? i want to put my simcard from my nexus4 into the nexus7 LTE model
thanks

It makes me want to pick one up, too. You know, if it were available in the US and all...
I deodexed the Mms.apk from my Nexus 4 (Android 4.3) and put it on my N7 LTE. Worked perfectly. If you also want to use the original JB Mms.apk, here are the steps:
1. boot into a custom recovery
2. mount your /system partition
3. adb push "path to your/Mms.apk" /system/app
4. adb shell chmod 0644 /system/app/Mms.apk
5. adb reboot
And that's all. Original 4.3 SMS App for your N7 LTE
Good to know. Thanks

When the LTE tablet comes to the US, this hack probably won't work on Verizon Wireless. They specifically put an SMS / MMS block on tablets upon activation. (So even the sim card swap wouldn't work.)

all you need to do to text from your tablet is use this app. It ties to your phone number and text come and go via wifi. I use it and almost never text from my phone anymore. It also works inside of gmail on your pc, or has a chrome extension and works as a tab in chrome. There is almost no lag between the time the phone gets the text and when it appears on your tablet in both send and receive. I highly recommend this app.

Nifty. Yeah, that would work even with an SMS block because it bypasses the cellular network entirely. Good find.

Phone number harvesting for future text ad revenue maybe?
You can use certain SMS apps on WiFi only. Like whatsapp. You download the app from the whatsapp website, install and select your country and enter your phone number in and press OK. It may take 5mins. After it will fail and you just enter the number you received on you phone and type it into whatsapp on Your tablet.. Tada.
Note. You can only use whatsapp on one device.

Voice+ from CM with Google Voice and stock mms.apk (or any other texting app) is another method for texting with your tablet, but only with your GV number. I was also using Desk SMS with Tablet SMS, but That hasn't been updated in a year and don't know how I feel about paying for an app that's no longer supported, but it works well, though SwiftKey seems delayed when entering text in that.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Just use go sms pro, that works well and doesn't require root or overwriting mms.apk

I use Tablet Talk. Great for SMS, MMS and Phone calls. It links with your phone via WiFi or Bluetooth.
I also have Text + installed. Works over WiFi. You get an actual phone number for your tablet.

GUIDE : How to install Whatsapp on the Nexus 7

How to install Whatsapp on the Nexus 7
http://www.whatsapp.com/android/current/WhatsApp.apk
Download Whatsapp apk from here. Install on your N7. You'll get an alert that it won't work. Just press on and continue. Punch in the phone number and wait for the text and the app to run out of the waiting time then you'll get a call me option. DON'T PRESS IT. Just put in the six digit code you got by text. Enjoy!

On the smartphone I do get the code option but on the N7.2 I only get the call me button that just stays.
I waited out the 5 minutes then a call option came and also a small text box appears where you put in the code. It worked for me. You send a screenie? At the call me point take a screenshot.

What if the message couldn't be received?
Guys ill tell u simple and 100 % working method for whats app
just take back up from titanium from another cell transfer to nexus 7 and just restore apk + data of whats app and youre good to go .
I am using whats app plus on nexus 7 2013 so i am 100 % sure it will work with u guys also .
I must be missing something as this really couldn't be simpler.
I installed WhatsApp (dowload from various places) and then gave it my mobile number.
Mobile got a text with code. Ignored that.
WhatsApp on tablet timed out after 5 minutes and then asked to Call me with the verification code. I said yes and it did with automatic message repeating the code 5 times. I inserted code on tablet.
Simples!
Did the same thing, only I got the app from aptoide. Install the app/apk, use your phone's number and u are set
Thx it works

[XVoice with Hangouts]

Xvoice is an Xposed Framework module that works like CM Voice+.
Along with Nexus 7 SMS enabler, in theory I should be able to send and receive SMS from Hangouts. I'm able to receive them, but it won't send.
I have the Flo WiFi model, if that matters.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have an N7 but I did make the XVoice+ module.
You can try my test build (At the end of the first post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2598889)
If that doesn't work, you can try adding this. http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.makuser.nexussms
Or do both.

I have a Nexus 7v2 flo but can't figure out how to set this up and get it working.
Do you have to be tethered to 4g or will it work with WIFI only?

All you need is xposed framework with nexus 7 SMS enabler and xvoice+.
You don't need to be tethered, it works over WiFi with your Google voice number.
I got lot of errors doing this too, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I just got tired of it and started using Voice again.

That's how I have it set up but form what I was reading it should work without the SMS enabler and also on the enabler spec it says
" Enables SMS+Tethering feature on Nexus 4, 5 and 7 (2012: GSM and 2013: LTE version) and Moto G and X running KitKat"
Nothing about the Flo model of Nexus 7
From what I read it worked on the tablets until the KitKat update after that I can't find anyone saying they have it working.

Looks good so far on my rooted Galaxy S4 using Hangouts as the SMS client. I can confirm that it doesn't seem to work on a tablet, though. I installed and enabled it on my LG G Pad 8.3 GPE and the GVoice messages still go to the Voice app. Not a big thing, though. Thanks for doing this!

I realize this thread is a bit dated, but I've recently taken over development for the XVoice+ module. I use a FLO as well and confirm that it is 100% working with this device, just as you described with the Nexus 7 SMS enabler (though I use the older version of that module, since tethering is already baked into the ROM I use)
You can find more information on the project page at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xvoiceplus-voice-xposed-t2862699
and on the original thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-xvoiceplus-voice-xposed-t2598889
I strongly suggest trying out the latest experimental build as the issues you described should be fixed now.

I got texting to work on a WiFi nexus 7.

But I was wondering if anyone with more experience in android could help.
I installed an xposed module that unlocks the "default SMS" options in settings and in other texting apps like hangouts. Now I used the cyanogenmod voice+ app and linked my google voice, then I went to hangouts and got it to import my existing texts and that worked.
Now this is where it gets weird and I need some help lol its pretty glitchy. I actually receive texts fine, but I was able to send one text perfectly and now I can't send anymore.
If anyone wants to work on this please go ahead
