I'm travelling out to Europe next week and am planning on taking my Desire.
Apologies, if this is a stupid question but is the definitive way to stop being hit with data charges just to switch my APN Control using the Quick Settings app ?
This would allow me to use the phone and not get hit with data charges ?
Just want to be sure.
It is easier than that.
Go to Menu->Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Networks and ensure that "Data roaming" is unticked.
If you are on T-Mobile UK, and heading to Europe, you don't even need to do that as TMo won't allow you to use data unless you buy one of their Euro Internet Boosters.
Regards,
Dave
just out of interest, what country are you visiting?
I have a slightly odd requirement, and I wondered if there was any way to fix it:
My carrier has a partnership with a second carrier so we can roam on each others networks for no extra cost.
Where I live, my own carrier only gives me a 2G signal, whereas the other gets 3G. Thing is, I have to physically select the other network. If it's on Automatic, it always "prefers" my own carrier.
This is fine until I'm on the other side of town where the other network gets no signal at all. I then have to manually select my own carrier again!
Is there any way to get it to prefer the other network, or even more ideally, prefer the one that offers the better signal at any given point?
Hi,
a bit of *bump* because I'm struggling with the same issue. I had such option on my previous samsung i780 (oooold) and it worked like a charm.
Currently my mobile operator has 2 roaming partners and if I want to change quickly the preferred order (because in some location it might have better coverage but only there and only for a while) I wold have to switch simcard to the old phone...
Isn't there at even a separate aplication to do that? Does andorid API allow such modification?
Glad I'm not the only one!
Interesting you mention an app to do it... i've not looked actually. If an app can access the list of networks and actually set the phone to use one, then I guess it would be possible. I'll check it out...
to the best of my understanding this is somewhat network option/setting and when suggesting an app I was thinging abount some way to read this setting, modify it and then save/send back to network. It would be a matter of access to the network settings from the API and knowledge how to operate it....
Still investigating this. Looks like the stuff to access the list of networks is in some internal APIs, so a little harder to access. I'll post back when I learn more...
Hey I hope you guys can figure this out have you tried the *#*#4636#*#* command and changed the radio? This will select the most preferred network.. e.g. I'm with Telstra in Australia, the stock radio defaults to 2100MHz but Telstra's HSPA+ is 850Mhz.. so I have to switch to AUS2 radio so it defaults to that every time.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
@Simmo3D
It's not about the radio band but about the service provider itself.
Maybe I'm dumb, but I can't find the roaming control settings. I live in Mexico and cross everyday into the United States.
I need to turn my settings for roaming like this:
Domistic: Data & Voice
International: Only Voice
I also have the Call Guard on because it alerted me if I was "International" Roaming or just "Domestic" Roaming when I was going to answer a call....
I had the Epic 4G and had those controls as does my chick in the Photon.... is it because of having the Nexus? Is there a way or an app to get the settings back?
Thanks!
I'm running CM9 so it might/probably be different.
Go to settings, then hit the menu button (three dots)...there should be an option to click 'Data roaming' and 'Restrict background data'.
Right but it doesn't give the option to block International Roaming while keeping active Domestic Roaming....
That's my problem. Living in the border city, I get some domestic roaming down here and I want that... its just the international roaming that I don't want to access. Every other Android phone i've had has that setting that differentiates.
The phone doesn't tell me when I am roaming domestically or internationally either. Do any custom roms address this?
sorry OP, but i also have a similar question... I'm using CM9 and I'm going to japan and i would like to only use my phone on wifi and disable all data. how would i do this
Hey xda-dev.
I recently rooted my phone and did a carrier unlock through the dial code method.
I'm currently in the US travelling, and even though I paid for a unlimited text/call US and Canada, I get a "EMERGENCY CALLS ONLY" and now, there's just a circle with a line through it at the top where the signal bars should be.
I will be in the US for another 4 days or so, and I need a way to get my phone to start working because I need to get ahold of friends and people at home while I'm travelling.
Is there any way to reset to default on the service menu? What is wrong with this even? I have no idea how to troubleshoot this whatsoever.
There is nothing wrong with your phone. Who is your carrier? It's probably the fact your carrier does not have any roaming agreement in place where you are.

You'd have to allow roaming. You can call Rogers about it, one thing though, unlimited text/call US & Canada can mean from your city. Once in the US, you're not on Rogers towers anymore, therefor, you get roaming fees.

It's not your service, It's your phone. I noticed this the other day when I went to the states too, but I forgot to make sure that I automatically roamed to the right network.
Try this.... Go to Settings -> More Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators | Searching | -> Automatic
As soon as you go into the Network Ops it will start to search to see what's available around you. Make sure after you've searched its set to Automatic. That way when you are out and about, It will go to whatever network the sim card is in your phone it will choose that one first, but if it can't find that one it will go to the next best thing.
I did the same thing myself when I moved to Vegas for 2 months... I unlocked my sim and put in a T-Mobile card in...
If that doesn't solve the problem, then your phone wasn't unlocked fully. Reason why I say this is I work for Rogers/Fido and have seen this issue a few times other than doing it personally myself.
Sorry wrong thread

Hello everyone! I have a question, which I'm sure I already know the answer to, but figured I'd ask all the smart people here.
I have the unlocked 2XL from the Google Store using Project Fi. I have both an eSIM and physical, both giving same results. My phone always defaults to Sprint as the carrier of the three (Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular). I can forch jump to T-Mobile or US Cellular, but my phone will always default back to Sprint after a reboot or after sitting for about an hour. I've also purchased FiSwitch (amazing app btw), and I force jump to T-Mobile using it and even the dialer codes (same difference), but it always goes back to Sprint. I reached out to the Dev of FiSwitch as well and was instructed FiSwitch can't force it to stay on T-Mobile. Sprint's service is just subpar to T-Mobile in my area (home and work). T-Mobile provides better signal strength, quality and network speeds. I'd love to make T-Mobile my default unless I choose to change it.
My question... Is there anyway to force my phone to always use T-Mobile as the preferred carrier? Through build.prop or other means? My guess is this might be programmed into the radio, meaning I'm probably out of luck. I am rooted as well, which hopefully will help me with replies. Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply! Those codes, along with FiSwitch are what I've been using. Unfortunately, after force jump to another carrier from Sprint, my phone will always move back to Sprint after a reboot or after just sitting for about an hour. Force jumpting to T-Mobile, for example, doesn't actually turn off the auto feature permanently. Per the FiSwitch Dev, he's not sure there is a way to force it to jump to and stay on T-Mobile, the phone after sometime will always jump back to "auto", putting it back on Sprint in my case.
I guess I'm looking for a way to not temp jump to T-Mobile, but force my phone to always use T-Mobile unless I chose otherwise.

I have that app, it's the one I mention in the OP. It can force switch, but it's not permanent.
Hey! Have you had any luck with it? I’m facing the same issue...
I've not found a way to force lock it to a certain carrier, but I did find by accident that using the "next" option with FiSwitch, cycling through until I land on the carrier I want, it will stay there until I hit an area where it drops, in which case it will automatically switch to another that works in the area.
I basically sit locked on TMobile now except one area I go where TMobile doesn't work well and it will jump to Sprint. I just hit "next" in FiSwitch when I leave that area and lock in TMobile again. :good:
Woah, thanks a lot for your kind reply. I’ll see how it works on my pixel. Strange, that they haven’t came up with a solution for a longer period of time as looking around, much people has this kind of issues.
Thanks for your prompt reply!!

My phone on reboot will default to the best signal, I live in Chicago but work just over the border in Indiana, when at work often my phone will reboot to Sprint, but as I cross back into Illinois it will go T-mobile on a reboot. I am using an E-sim. I also use Signal Spy for my switching needs.
What happens if you only use e-sim?

I get the same results with ESim vs physical. I just mainly use physical over the ESim because of my flashing between stock and custom ROMs and Google 2FA is a pain with only an ESim since the phone is not activated until I actually login to my Google account whereas with physical SIM, I can get a SMS backup code right from the start. :good:

I know this is not exactly what you want but what if you used Tasker to do the switch to Sprint for you on reboot.
Only decent workaround I could think of.
