[Q] Best Minimalist case for the Nexus 5? - Nexus 5 Accessories

As I wait for my phone to arrive, I'm researching cases. Personally, i'm done with the ultra protective cases, so I want something now that's as minimal as humanly possible
My research brings me down to two in particular:
1. Spigen Ultra Fit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EV8Y50S/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2SFKRF5TPZMT5
2. Ringke Slim: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPLTC1I/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A8YCUEQIOX5AP
Complaints for both seem to be the same with respect to sharp angles, and most seem to fix it with a nail filer.
Are there any others out there that are minimal cases for the Nexus 5?
Anyone else who wants minimal protection and got a case? Which one did you go with?

Speigen Ultra Fit
I hate cases and love how the phone looks/feels but just feel like I need at least some protection on it. So I ordered the Speigen Ultra Fit and have been happy with it overall so far. The edges on the bottom are a bit sharp but not bad enough that I have felt the need to sand them down at all. The case feels almost exactly like the back of the actual phone which is a big plus. It adds minimal amount of bulk to the phone. I also ordered the Speigen Neo Hybrid but took it off after about 3 seconds and sent it back cause it made the phone feel huge to me. I would definitely recommend the Ultra Fit if you are looking for a small case. I may end up ordering the Ringke also just to compare but for now I'm happy with the Speigen.

I have a Spigen Slim armor case and it is very slim. I have small hands too. The phone does not have the "Naked" feeling, but its not super overkill like an otterbox monstrosity. I personaly dont get bumper cases and low profile cases. Those offer little to no drop protection. If you want a slim option, why not go with a full body film protector to at least prevent scratches? The bumper and slim cases seem to be "Faux sense of protection in a box"

I would not recommend the Spiegen Case. It's left scratches and scuff marks on my phone. I had a case from them on my Galaxy Nexus and it didn't do that.

Spigen Ultra Thin Air (Crystal Shell) is actually thinner than the Ultra Fit. 1.0mm vs 1.2mm thick.

It's all personal preference but for me I don't like full body protectors cause no matter how well they go on they start peeling pretty quick and that just makes the whole phone feel cheap when you hold it. I usually go without cases but with the Nexus 5 setting the phone down with the camera bump just scares me. No idea if it actually does any damage but it feels that way to me. Having a slim case means I'm more comfortable setting the phone down on hard surfaces but doesn't make it too bulky.
For the record - I have taken the Ultra Fit on and off several times and not seen any scratching on my phone.

It's actually in the same link as the ultra fit, just click the crystal shell 'color'. It's a completely different case and covers the from on all four sides (not just two sides like the ultra fit).

I have this case. It rocks so far. Perfect fit, almost looks naked still. Very thin. Good feel to it. Tastes delicious!

Best minimal case would be the 0.3mm ultra thin hard case found on ebay. Very slim at 0.3mm.

Burgerpimp, Spigen's eBay store is slightly cheaper than buying it from Spigen via Amazon: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spigen-Ultra-Fit-CRYSTAL-SHELL-Case-Google-Nexus-5-/271319918154?pt=US_Cell_Phone_PDA_Cases&hash=item3f2bed664a

I ordered mine on amazon for 6.99 + 3.00 shipping. Same as ebay, just not 'fullfilled by amazon'.
Thanks though.

FWIW, I just got a Spigen Ultra Fit delivered and was concerned about the "sharp edges" people kept reporting. No sharp edges here. Fits great. Slim profile (I also have a Neo Hybrid that was too bulky for my taste). This should do the trick.

I placed an order yesterday for the Ultra Fit clear that burgerpimp posted above. Came out to $10 shipped. If it's a bust, then i'll probably give something else a try.
People seem to be saying good things about the Diztronic thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490294

I was looking at the clear as well. Looks a bit slimmer too. My only concern was whether it would be too slick. The black has a similar feel to the N5. I'm curious to know your thoughts when you get it.

I got mine today and can confirm the flash issue. Other than that I like it. It fits a little looser than the black ultra fit, but still snug. The ultra fit is pretty tight. Surprisingly it doesn't show much fingerprints and grips decently. Also, all the edges are smooth.
It's good enough that I will try to fix the flash issue myself by making the hole slightly bigger. This will be a great case to show off a dbrand skin.
I will post pics once I receive my white carbon skin.

I like the Slim Ultra Fit Black and Crystal Clear case both and think they are the best cases so far from what I've tried.
Other cases I have are the ultra hybrid, neo hybrid, slim armor, caseology slim fit, and official bumper.

I may end up with the Glas tr nano once Spigen works out the issues with the glass screen protectors. I really like the feel of this phone without a case and that may be a viable option if I'm confident the screen is protected.

Tight fitting case for the S3?

So far i have tried case mate barely there, nice but little protection and the edges wear very quickly and SGP modello which is nice, but would be perfect if it were a tighter fit.
I wanted to try the neo hybrid but from what ive read the fit isnt any tighter than the modello.
Is there a case in the modello, neo style that is a proper tight fit?
I'm not sure what you mean by a "tight fitting case" beyond one that fits securely. With that as the criterion, I can recommend two cases:
Less protective, and currently significantly less expensive (because only shipping is being charged), is the ZooGue, which is available for the cost of shipping. I paid just under $6.00 for two cases shipped within the United States. The cases are well-made and at least as protective as the basic black cases my wife and I bought for our Vibrants back in July of 2010.
More protective is the two-piece DBA Ultra Complete, which I received last night from Amazon. The fit and finish are excellent. The inner layer is TPU. The outer layer is a flexible polycarbonate.

Don't ever Buy the case-mate Barely there. It's horrible quality. I've heard the SGP Neo Hybrid is good
I second the ZooGoo. It's pretty slim and one of the tightest cases I've used. The UAG and Casemate Pop are both tight but not as slim as what it sounds like you are looking for. I too have the Modello and loved it until I got the ZooGoo. I just wish I got Black and not Red.

The OP appears to be concerned about protection as well as a "tight fit." The more protection is an issue, the more I think I'd recommend the DBA Ultra Complete. But until last night, I was using a black ZooGue. It looks great with my PB SG III.
The Cruzerlite cases are awesome. Definitely tight fitting as requires some lining up to fit properly...can't just slap it on!
Buttons easily accessible, grease doesn't tend to build up like it does on my SGP screen protector either.

For protection, now having an Ultra Complete and reading the Acase description, I'd go with the Ultra Complete for protection. The Ultra Complete has hflexible, high-quality polycarbonate and TPU versus PCM and silicone.

yes its free, i just got mine yesterday. thought it was 2 weeks before it arrives, but hey, it took only around 1 week(i guess). what i ordered was red, which i thought ill be giving it to my wife as i plan to buy her a red S3; but i instead bought galaxy note 10.1!! lol... now i have this as my spare case (together with CM phantom, otterbox commuter and metal slim(white) ) hahaha

DBA Cases is a new company that makes the Just Like Glass screen protectors and Thin Grip and Complete Ultra. There are threads discussing the Thin Grip here, the Complete Ultra here, and the current production screen protector here. (I have no business connection with the company. I came across it in my search, as a new Galaxy S III owner, for a case and screen protector. The CEO has been an active participant in the discussion of his products. In response to complaints about the coverage of his screen protector, he had made and sent to seven testers, a larger trial model. I'm one of the lucky testers. Mine came yesterday. My initial impressions of the larger screen protector, which I'll expand on over time, are in DBA Cases supersized me.)

What case should I buy? (Otterbox Commuter, UAG Case, SGP Neo Hybrid)

Hello guys, so I recently bought a AT&T i747 SGS3 and knowing how picky I am with my electronics I started to look right away for a case.
The case must not add bulk, must offer great protection against scratches as well as the case not scratching the phone in any way, must offer camera protection and must have at least a small lip on the front.
So far I have come across these 3 which are:
Otterbox Commuter
SGP Neo Hybrid
Urban Armor Gear Case for the SGS3
As far as the otterbox commuter, I had it on my atrix 4g and loved the protection it offered but a few months later it just gets old, attracts lint on the borders and overall takes the beauty and slickness of the phone but I must mention protection was great and that is the most important feature for me.

The SGP Neo looks very promising offering a good quality screen protector and overall a great case all around but what has me worried is the direct contact of the TPU with the phone, specially the camera area and bezel as opposed to the otterbox which has a rubber sleeve, I had a blackberry about a year ago and the phone scratched badly on the bezel from dust getting under speck TPU case and acting as sand paper.
The Urban Armor Case seems like a very well rounded case, offering some type of rubber/soft TPU inner lining on the inside and a very tough poly-carbonate shield on the outside. What I like is that both pieces are bonded together offering a seamless design but what worries me a little is the X pattern on the inside which seems to be part of the outer hard layer which goes all the way to the top of the camera/flash/mic opening which could potentially scratch those components down the line.
Which case would you recommend and why?
Other case recommendations are welcome.
I wouldn't recommend the SGP Neo Hybrid due to the issues regarding sensitive buttons which many/most people are experiencing.
To make things harder for you, I'd also recommend looking at either the Incipio Silicrylic or the Acase Superleggera.
Edit: I also hope you realize you're in the wrong device forum (but accessories are all the same so doesn't matter)

Otterbox no longer attracts lint.
Otterbox is the biggest and has the most sturdy feel to it.
UAG feels really good in the hand. Less slippery than otterbox.
SGP still has button issues. It is super thin but feels as sturdy as a gel case.
The speck case is nice.

I have the UAG & Neo Hybrid, both are going back.
UAG isn't bad at all, but I'm not a fan of the stiff buttons...that being said, the Neo Hybrid buttons are atrocious. I can't believe they even released this case with all the issues I've been having.
Will probably try the commuter case next, as people seem to be having less issues with the power button.
Hey guys,
I have all three cases. Hands down the feel and the buttons go to UAG. what r u guys talking about the UAG buttons feel crappy?'honestly they feel better then any case I have ever tried for the gs3. The protection , otterbox wins this by a hair. Look goes to sgp but its very thin, buttons feel like crap and you can't buy the plastic bands seperate.. plus customer support is crappy. I love sgp ultra clear screen protectors though..
I'm just giving my honest opinion and in very anal on cases.. the gf gives me verbal treatment for buying all these cases
Thank you guys for your sincere opinions, so far I am leaning towards the UAG in white. I never drop my phones or anything and they are always over some layer of rubber or cloth when out of my pocket but I know accidents happened and that is why I need a case to at least cover it from getting scratched or dinged.

i have this case and the otter box (defender and commuter)
i like the defender because it has a protective screen the protects the entire front screen... the bad, obviously the size.
I like the commuter because it doesn't bulk up the phone that much, a bit slipper though at the back.
the original front flip case looks the best... but offers the least protection
Get the Commuter case! It's add a little bit bulky but the protection was MAX! I did few drop test in front of my friends to show off. It's drop from about 1.2 meter height and the case and phone survive it. I would recommend UAG case due to special design..^^
Commuter = Max protection + Keep the round shape of the phone
UAG = Less protection than Commuter + Makes your phone a bit square + nice design & less slippery.
Final decision still yours. Both case almost at the same price(UAG at Amazon.com, now only 21.99!!). Grab one of this and you will not regret for it. If not, grab both cases..xD

I'm waiting for mine to get here, just ordered one myself. As for drop protection, I would assume it offers as much protection as the spg or uag cases, if not more. There's a DBA thread where there is a picture of the outer plastic part of the case being bent almost in half and it still doesn't break so it's got to be pretty tough. The otterbox is pretty much max protection as far as drops go but it is also bulkier than any of the others mentioned.

Review: Poetic Slim Palette

Lately I've grown quite fond of hardshell cases for my Nexus 5 as they keep the slimness and aesthetic of the phone. I've already tried the Nillkin Frosted Sheild (gibsonflyingv posted a great review here) and the Ringke Slim, and while they're both decent, I thought I could do better and felt like the Poetic Slim Palette might fit the bill. Does it? Read on!

Right away, I'll tell you that I really, really like this case. It's just as thin as some other slim cases (if not thinner), but it's the finish that's the real takeaway here. The Slim Palette is what has been referred to as a "sandpaper" case in that it feels like a low-grit sandpaper, but to me, it feels more like a really rough cotton. The feel is a little jarring at first, but after you get used to it, it's brilliant. It provides excellent grip without the rubbery feel of the Nillkin case or the "stickiness" of a TPU case. And whereas other cases claim to be (and are often not), it's also 100% anti-fingerprint. I've been handling it like a lover, and it still looks like I've never touched it. I love the finish of it.
The fit is also another bright spot. As I mentioned, it's just as slim as competing cases, if not slimmer. It's so slim in fact that I wasn't sure the camera lens on the back was going to be protected (it is). It has a lay-on-the-table design and it hugs the phone well and doesn't feel loose anywhere. The corners are nicely rounded and avoid the sharp edges that are common on many other cases. In short, it's a perfect fit.
Another nice thing about the case is how it wraps up and around the back and around the corners. Other hardshell cases offer minimal protection, and while this case isn't going to save your phone from a massive fall, the protection it does offer, at least comparing to the Nillkin, is a bit more stout and should be sufficient from an accidental drop off a desk or similar. It's also much, much easier to remove than other hardshell cases. If I have to watch a tutorial on how to remove your case, then you've failed in the engineering department. This case snaps on and off easily while still staying extremely snug.
Overall, this is easily my favorite hardshell case thus far. It offers excellent fit and finish, and for only $5 on Amazon, the value can't be overstated. It's easily better than the Ringke and offers the slimness of the Nillkin with better protection. I can't recommend this case enough to any Nexus 5 owner who wants a minimal case with better protection than most hardhsell cases offer.
How sad, this case is $20 in Canada. I'll debate about it though, since this sandpaper like texture is intriguing!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I have this case in blue and agree that the feel is wonderful. I bought it so I'd have 'something' while I waited for the limefuel battery case to arrive - and the limefuel would benefit from the textured surface and from the slightly taller 'lip' over the screen that the Poetic has.
I have one of the Spigen glas fronts on the phone, and that front felt recessed in the Poetic and almost flush in the limefuel. Jury's very much out on the limefuel right now, especially since I installed the Uber kernel which seems to have outstanding battery life.
I'll wait for Mr. Bacon to confirm this but I suspect this is the $1 QuickSand case people have been buying from Ebay. Ships from China for free, has extras included and has been reviewed quite favorably.
The $5 price point kind of confirms it in my mind and the Bear Motion branded ones also look the exact same.

Yeah, they look like the same $0.99 ebay ones. Even the mold line that is apparent on the right side vs left. They do have a darker blue and a yellow choice for colours, so there's that. But yeah, it appears to be the same case. Here is my comparison of the bear motion vs generic ebay. Identical everything, even choice of backgrounds haha.

Here is the mold line comparison on the right side vs my lime green case. You can see that the mold line is on the exact same spot on the right side on both cases, and not on the left side on both cases.

Does it? Read on!

Why do you think this is better than the Nillkin? I have it and it's really great with its textured back. It's thin and doesn't scratch the phone. I'm just really not keen on the sand look. To my eyes it removes the sleekness of the phone, whereas the Nillkin has some character.

Honestly I like it more because the grip is better and it's easier to remove. There's also a small lip that goes over and under the top and bottom of the phone that would protect it from impact if you dropped it straight down whereas the Nillkin wouldn't since the Nillkin stops just short of the top and bottom of the phone. Granted the Nillkin looks better and I wasn't a fan of the sandpaper cases for the same reason, but unless you're looking at it up close, you really don't even notice the texture.
Anyone know if this case/quicksand is compatible with wireless charging? Seeing conflicting reports.

The Poetic is. Can't speak for any other sandpaper case.
I strongly dislike this case. It's so slippery.

Can anyone pls tell me if this case enhances or cuts off the vibration? Or it's the same without a case?
I've been looking for a minimal case lately due to being tired of having my nexus completely covered up.
Does this case leave any marks/scratches on the phone like the SGP ultra fit?

This has to be a troll post. This case, and sandpaper cases in general, have the best grip of any case I've ever used on any phone.

Not at all. I made a habit of cleaning off my phone every week without the case and I've removed it many times (without much issue I might add). There isn't a mark on it...and I have the white case.

You obviously haven't used it. How is it 'sandpaper'? You're pathetic. Try a Ringke slim for grip. You'll be blown away

Hybrid Case Showdown! Supcase vs. Spigen vs. Rearth (video, pics, Q&A)

Made up a quick video review to compare 3 of the top hybrid cases for the Nexus 5. I had a real hard time finding just the right case for this phone and purchased a couple real duds before discovering I liked the hybrid style. (I tried another Ringke case and a chinese Cimo knockoff)
Video:
Heres the quick rundown on each case. (each case was $7-10 from Amazon)
Supcase Unicorn Beetle - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FN13QH0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Pros:
Great construction. Fit and finish are very well done.
Frosted back hides scratches easily.
Feels "tougher" than the other two cases.
Cons:
No bumpers on the back to protect the case from scratches. A minor con since the frosted texture hides scratches very well.
Headphone opening is the smallest of the three.
Buttons are VERY firm. Didn't soften up after a week of use.
Frosted back distorts color of the Nexus back.
Spigen Ultra Hybrid - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJJ38HY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Pros:
Very premium feel. Soft texture on the TPU sides, most pleasant to hold.
Bumpers on back lift case and protect it from scratches.
Comes with free screen protector.
Cool engraved buttons.
Buttons have good response and are fairly clicky.
Cons:
Easy to accidentally press buttons. Frequently hit the volume buttons while trying to push power.
Rearth Ringke Fusion - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EPLTFIS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Pros:
VERY slightly slimmer than the other cases.
Same soft feel as the Spigen, just a hair inferior.
VERY clicky buttons, excellent response and no accidental presses.
Similar bumpers as the Spigen though not as pronounced. Still effective.
Hole for lanyard.
Cons:
Buttons are not fully sealed, possible entry for dust/dirt.
Overall finish is less than Spigen or Supcase.
I should note, there appears to be another decent hybrid case out there, the iBlason CandyGel Hybrid (http://www.amazon.com/i-Blason-Google-Nexus-CandyGel-Hybrid/dp/B00FOW4KNC/ref=sr_1_6?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1393007496&sr=1-6&keywords=iblason+nexus+5). I have not tested this case but if there is enough interest I will pick one up and do a quick review.

Supcase:
Great pics and comparison! I was about to settle on the supcase, but I don't want to think about that back every time I set the phone down. I had discounted the other two because of their finicky buttons, but it appears that you may have received an updated Ringke case with its slits? Earlier, many complained about its overly stiff buttons with their lack of feedback, probably similar to the Supcase. Some had remedied this by making lengthwise slits with a precision knife with very good results. Looks like they're doing this at the factory now. And, just for your knowledge, in the Supcase thread, there are many who have made invisible slits in the button areas with improved results.
Thanks for the comparison! Can you confirm if the gap behind the USB port of the spigen case is there? Dust and lint gets inside easily is that fixed in your case? Thanks?

Thanks! I am VERY happy with the Ringke case. It must be the updated case since I have had ZERO problems with the buttons. It's nice to see the manufacturer incorporate the aftermarket "fix" and improve their product. If Supcase does the same thing then I might have to give them a second try. I wasn't too interested in modding my case since I already do a ton of fiddling with my phone as-is, this time I just wanted to buy something off the shelf that just works.

I did not notice a gap on my Spigen case though I may have just overlooked it. I left the case at work so I will have to get back to you on that. I'll upload pictures once I get a chance to check it out.
*UPDATE*
There is almost no gap on my Spigen case. My version of the case clearly has an extra bit of TPU moulding, making the gap maybe a little less than the thickness of a credit card. You can kind of see the the extra moulding on the group shot above (picture #4).
I'll also note that the Rearth case has almost NO gap by the power cutout. It's pretty flush with the back of the phone. I forgot my tablet at home today so pictures will have to come a bit later.
Thanks for the great side by side comparison,
Just bought 2 Spigens Clears off Amazon because of the great comparison.
Thanks Again
Heeter
Here's an extra picture comparing the power/speaker/mic cutouts on the Spigen (top) vs the Ringke (bottom).
i read a lot of reviews on amazon saying the ringke case scratched the phone in just a few days of use, stuff like corners getting worn out very quickly etc. what can you tell me about this? i was really looking for a customizable back type of case so ringke and spigen are really the only choices i have, since the supcase back isn't really all that clear.

Yup, don't use hard cases. Choose plastic or rubber cases .
By any chance does anyone know whether a QI charger still works correctly with the Spigen case?
does this mean that if i want a customizable back case without damaging my phone's corners the answer is there's none? or is the spigen a lot safer?

?? You're confusing these hybrid cases with the hard case. This OP is comparing the hybrid cases, not the hard slim cases, which have been reported to scratch corners. The ringke hybrid is just soft tpu on the border.

Well, there are multiple threads over the Ringke hybrid case here, and I don't recall anyone ever complaining about scratched phones with the hybrid case. It's a soft rubber TPU material after all. It often happens I've noticed in Amazon reviews that some go back to review something but they don't enter under the correct product. I can imagine that's what happened.
I see the review you're referring to on Amazon about the corners. If you look carefully in small print, the review is indeed referring to the slim hard case, not the hybrid case. Amazon has bundled all the reviews for the hybrid and slim cases all together. You have to read the fine print where it says "slim black".
Thanks for the answers. Yes, it didn't seem to be logic that 90% of the people had no complaints about scratches or whatever and others have loads of it, i just wanted to make sure. I think i'm going for the Spigen case anyway, as it looks more sturdy and the front has a bigger protection. Plus, bring a screen protector.
It's not only the hard cases. I have a tpu case that caused scuffs in only two weeks of use. And I promise there was no no dirt when I put the case on...

I can confirm that none of the cases reviewed seem capable of scratching the phone just by themselves. As with most cases, however, it is possible for small pieces of dirt and debris to get into the case and may cause small scratches or slight wear. I had my old GS2 in a SGP (Spigen) TPU case for two years and it ended up with some very light scuffing on the corners where dirt and dust would tend to collect. Even with taking out the phone and cleaning the case every week or so it still ended up that way after two years of constant use.
Are these cases better protection from scratches vs hard/slim cases? Undoubtably. Will they protect your phone 100% and keep it good as new after prolonged daily use? Of course not.
That being said, I don't think ANY case is capable of providing 100% protection in that sense.

Thanks for compiling this. Are there any slim cases with a bit of a lip around the screen? I have the official nylon case, but it has absolutely no lip, so much so, that I'm afraid of putting the phone upside down on the table.

The KuGi TPU Case has a 1.2 mm raised edge. I flagged the case as having clear fake reviews but that doesn't make it a bad case.
The Olixar Leather Back Case and Olixar NovaShield also mentioned a raised bezel to protect the screen. Though the NovaShield might not be "slim" really.
Thanks. I was looking more at the more known brands.
Was looking at either the spigen rugged armor or the nillkin nylon case. But don't know for sure about the lip.

For now, it will just be cases, once we get more reviews and testing on tempered glass protectors a list might be made.
I bought 4 cases and this is the one I like the most, as for as ruggedness goes:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RFSRQXX
Only problem is the charge port plug doesn't stay in all the way. After charging a few times it only closes 3/4 the way and stays bent out a little.
Can someone help me with the difference between a poetic revolution case and a guardian case? Other than the back of the case it seems the same. Does offer something different than the other one? I'm leaning towards the guardian just because I don't want to hide the back of my phone.

For the cheap price and fast shipping, it looked fine as a tempary case tell we see more offerings. Bought a set of magnetic DASH charging cables for my OP3 so I ended up cutting off the port cover and putting the adapter in, lost WARP charge but I can live with that for now.

The Revolution has a full built-in curved screen protector that adds a layer of protection without affecting screen responsiveness. Also, the corners look a bit more rugged but barely, the back has a stand built in as well.
