I must be stupid -- I cannot flash KitKat on my 2013 N7 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Note: everything stock on my 2013 N7... locked bootloader, stock recovery and not rooted...
Followed the instructions for downloading & manually flashing kitkat OTA here:
www.androidpolice.com/2013/11/13/yo...4-4-ota-update-krt16o-for-2013-wi-fi-nexus-7/
Noted this from the instructions:
"You don't need a USB cable if you're just planning to download the OTA zip directly to your device and flash it from recovery."
When I booted into stock recovery there is no option to flash the update.zip... only option is to sideload update via ADB..
What am I missing

Sideload. Do you have the Android SDK installed? If not, do you at least have the basic tools? ADB, Fastboot, etc? If so...
Enter sideload mode.
put the update.zip file in that folder ( with the adb exe) and open a command window (with nothing selected, hold shift and right click in the empty area in that folder. Click on "open command window here"). (Windows instructions) type adb sideload <filename>.zip <Enter>
That should push the file to your device, and immediately flash it.

Yes, if your bootloader is unlocked and you have a custom recovery installed. You should be able to download it to the device, then flash it with the custom recovery.

How to install Clock Work Mod on a100 with unlocked boot loader !

DISCLAIMER
Thank you to all the DEV'S who have made this possible BIG UPS TO YOU
This worked for me, and in theory if my instructions are followed carefully it will work for you.
However if your results are not the same I am in no way responsible for any dammage done to your tablet!
THE GOOD STUFF
This was tested on Acer A100 on the latest ICS LEAK found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510706
Also my PC is running windows 7 x64
(Follow install instructions carefully)
First install the latest ICS leak http://vache-android.com/v1/index.ph...files&file=148
Once complete do a factory data reset on your device from the settings/backup and restore menu on the tablet
When that is complete, Root your Device using the method found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531646
( again Follow instructions Carefully )
BE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOUR DEVICE IS ROOTED BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!!
Unlock your BOOTLOADER using the method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557445
(Really be careful here!)
This is where it gets tricky download http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=369 for your OS and extract recovery_thor17_403.img to the root of your platform-tools folder for instance mine is C:\android-sdk\platform-tools
Once completed on your PC open a command prompt as an administrator and navigate to your platform-tools folder from cmd prompt e.g. cd c:\android-sdk\platform-tools and hit enter
next type the following commands:
adb reboot bootloader
once in bootloader mode type:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_thor17_403.img
and hit enter you will see it flash to your device within a couple of seconds.
once complete with the tablet in upright landscape mode ( home button on the right hand side ) power the device down and power it back on while holding the leftmost volume button firmly when it vibrates you may release the power button.
continue to hold the volume button until you see Booting recovery kernel image on the screen.
if all went well you now have cwm on your device
now for rom manager!
boot back into android OS and navigate to the google market, search for rom manager in the upper search pane.
download the app and install
open the app and press ok
next press flask clockworkmod recovery
next confirm your phone model
a popup will say your device is not officially supported press yes
next confirm version 3.x+
and you should be good to go

Download the updated file from the above website, extract it to your desktop, and run acera200simpletool.bat and follow the onscreen instructions.
Once complete download the rom manager app from the market and install it.
Once installed open from manager and choose flash clockwork mod recovery from the top of the list, then confirm your device is Acer a100. It will say there is currently no recovery for your device and ask if you installed a custom one, choose yes and select the second option it should say 3.x.x or something to that effect. Again confirm your selection and tada you now have cwm and a working from manager. I have tested this and made a complete backup already. Cheers

hello masterpcker...Did you install anything else first? Were you just using the standard a100 root? Also, did you unlock your bootloader beforehand? thanks so much friend
Yes I unlocked my boot loader first, and my device was rooted so all I did was run the .bat file from the above website and choose option 3 install recovery only. I am about to try a modded a500 from and see what it does.

I will be eager to hear how that comes out! I wish you the best of luck, but I'm not real confident. let us know the outcome if you don't mind....good luck!
For some reason I followed the directions to install CWM and it doesn't work.
When I try to boot to recovery all I see is the android mascot on it's back with a warning sign. If I press the home button it brings up the Android System Recovery, which I believe is the stock recovery. I'm not even sure how to select the items. I can only highlight the menu items using the volume keys.
It doesn't look like the cwm that I have flashed on my atrix.
Any ideas?
Edit...
Btw, I did unlock my bootloader
Well the a500 modded rom was a bust, it just booted to a really colorful screen lol. But my Android backup worked great for reinstall

What's the syntax did you use to dd to the device?
I found this dd syntax in the other thread. That the same one you used?
Code:
su
dd if=/mnt/external_sd/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
-Extract the zip folder "recoverycwma100" ( It's a recovery into Acer a200 simple tool )
-Copy ''recovery.img'' into your external sd card
-open a terminal emulator to your A100 ( root acces !!! )
- Write the following commands :
su
dd if = / mnt / external_sd / recovery.img of = / dev/block/mmcblk0p1
-wait a message '' xxxx bytes transferred in... ''
-exit terminal
-open root explorer with a mount system
-rename the file '' install-recovery.sh'' into /etc/ it '' install-recovery.bak''
Reboot into recovery with volum down + power , and Enjoy

Can't we just go into fastboot and use fastboot flash recovery recovery.img?
If you're running linux or just want to use adb it's way more simple than it looks.
Code:
Adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot
And if you brick your device by accidently installing the wrong boot.img
find your respected rom .zip file that you are currently using and use this.
Code:
Adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot

I can confirm that I have already flashed the recovery.img via fastboot, however cwm still fails on my particular tab. I did a full factory reset and flashed the entire new ics through recovery with the exact same results. I will be investigating the cause of some tabs doing this later tonight when I get home from work. If someone figures this out please post. I have gotten the recovery.img to flash via the a200cwm, however android exclamation upon recovery attempt. i have tried all three paths with no success. I am almost certain that it is a problem with the rooting method, but i won't have time to have a look until tonight. thanks and goodluck! I think the problem could be because of installing different rooting methods in the past, however I have yet to find a way to solve it.

Need urgent help, lost and confused.

Hello XDA, I got my Galaxy Nexus stock and OTA upgraded it to 4.1.1 Jellybean. I unlocked and rooted the phone and while installing roms I accidentally formatted and factory reseted my phone. I can get into boot loader, and I have CWM installed. If I could just move a rom onto the phone I could boot it. Problem is I cant figure out how to. Keep in mind I am also using a mac. Can anyone help me figure out how to push a rom zip onto the sdcard? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You can abd push from a custom recovery
Alright so USB debugging isnt on but I can still use adb commands? How?
You have to boot into a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and use adb commands.
for ex. adb push NameOfRom.zip /sdcard/
I just tried that and my terminal returned
device not found
Don't mount anything don't do anything special in recovery at all.
You're booted into recovery?
Also...I found when I wasn't using naked drivers that it took ~30 seconds for ADB to actually be recognized.
Maybe wait a minute and try again.
If not unplug and plug in.
I can use fastboot commands and it it recognized in fastboot, can I flash a stock rom from this mode?

If you're using fastboot...that means you're not in custom recovery.
Navigate to recovery in that menu.
Or use fastboot boot ______________.img to boot into a custom recovery if you have one downloaded and in your platform tools directory.
But yes, you COULD do that.
But I wouldn't yet.
You'll lose all of your data/apps/etc.

You don't flash fastboot images via CWM. If you have CWM installed & you're booted in to bootloader (fastboot) mode use the volume keys to reboot into recovery

Thanks for the info and link. That's very helpful.
You can also temperary load and use TWRP in stead of flashing it permanently. That's how I root and still keep stock bootloader/recovery.
Just follow steps to install TWRP, but use command 'boot' and not 'flash' TWRP.
(' fastboot boot twrp.img' is than commando with the correct name of twrp.img).
My personnal saved instructions for easier future (re-)rooting (after OTA's) using temperary loaded TWRP. Off course with help XDA-topics.
Temperary load and use TWRP (and in the proces keep stock bootloader/recovery):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Off course Nexus-bootloader must be unlocked already and correct hardware drivers installed on PC.
1. Copy the zipfile(s) you want to flash with TWRP to internal SD of Nexus. (For example latest SuperSU, download: http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip)
2. On PC download and extract to folder latest Android SDK. Go to folder 'Platform' or 'Platform Tools'. (Folder including adb, fastboot, etc.). ( Android SDK download: https://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html )
3. Download and extract latest TWRP(.img) for Nexus 7 Flo and copy to folder Platform/Platform Tools (with adb, fastboot, etc. in it) You might want to give 'recovery-twrp.img' a shorter name. (TWRP download: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/flo )
4. In the folder with the platform tools while pressing <SHIFT> on keyboard click right mousebutton and click with left mousebutton on 'Open Command Window Here'.
5. On Nexus switch on 'USB Debugging' in System settings-> Developper options. Shut down Nexus.
6. Connect Nexus with Usb-cable to PC. Start the device untill Nexus 7 folder opens on PC.
7. In earlier started Command Window type 'adb devices'and push <ENTER> on keyboard. (If all is well you will now see that Nexus is connected in Command Window. (If says device offline that means missing/incorrect hardwaredrivers or USB-cable broken/not connected)
8. On the Nexus now appears the messagge 'Allow Usb Debugging'. Tap 'oké/yes' on Nexus.
9. In Command Window type 'adb reboot bootloader' and push <ENTER>
10. To load TWRP without flashing for temperary use now type in Command Window 'fastboot boot twrp.img' (with correct name for twrp.img) and push <ENTER>
Now TWRP loads and can be used without losing stock recovery
-------------
Flashing with TWRP:
1. The zip(s) you want to flash must be copied to internal SD in advance. (for instance latest SuperSu.zip)
2. In TWRP tap on 'install'
3. Browse to the zip you want to flash and select by tapping on it
4. Now 'Swipe to confirm flash'
5. After reboot
--------------------
Finally I want to mention I bought Pro version of SuperSu for the option 'OTA Survival Mode'. Worked great. After last 4.4->4.4.2 OTA I still had root and did not have to reflash latest SuperSu.
Also before applying new OTA first check SuperSu-topic if latest SuperSu is compatible so OTA will not fail. If incompatible follow instructions there. I thjink than you must remove/switch off SuperSu first within app itself. Or flash new SuperSu, flash OTA and flash SuperSu again in same flash-session I was told on a Xda-topic and aplied once succesfully.

ultra fail... root process

i have tried way to many times to root this phone and have failed over and over. atleast once every 3 months i try with zero results. the phone is unlocked using the OneX v2.5 tool kit here. when i try to do perm root it says " User C not recognized as an external or internal command, operable program or batch file". ive tried putting the tool kit directly in C: and 86x. nothing works. what do i need to do to root this freaking phone. im fixing to get a bat to this phone!

Do you get any output with "adb devices"? When you don't (and your phone has debugging enabled), it may as well be a driver problem.
(quick tip: add the antroid-tools folder to your PATH)
I personally can't find my phone on Windows anymore after the 4.2 update, so I just use an Ubuntu liveUSB for adb/fastboot purposes.

That seems like you're not in the correct directory.
To get rid of that error forever just put the contents of platform-tools in your C:\windows\system32 and C:\windows\syswow64 folders
Then you can run the commands from anywhere.
Now:
Install HTC sync drivers.
Put your phone in fastboot mode.
Put a recovery image in the path that the cmd shows when you start it (eg. C/users/USER/) or "cd" to the recovery image.
Then:
fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img
When that gives decent output we're getting somewhere.
In that case put the supersu zipfile on you phones storage and flash it from recovery.

screw this. phone works great just wanted to root. mint condition, will sell cheap. pm me if interested.
it isn't due to the phone...it's because windows don't know for what this command is...so install again the latest java for your win7 ....you are definitely doing something wrong...you could also try to google that error which you get after typing fastboot bla bla
it works for all other ppl so should also work for you even with my non genuine win8.1 pro it's working fine
