Does anyone know what the power requirements are/will be for the XOOM? I expect it to have a good battery, but I still want to set up or simply buy a solar charging system for when I am not home. I might utilize the barometer to try geocaching.
Also, will it be trickle chargeable over USB?
I have the same question on USB charging. We know it has its own AC charger and special port. I asked on another forum this question and will post back if I hear anything.
Xoom manual is out on the web and it clearly states no charging via USB.

I guess the question now is what is the voltage of the charger. It has a car charger so the voltage is hopefully not high. I want to be able to charge it with my 6.5w solar panel.

If you have not yet tried the iGo tips/chargers, I strongly recommend you consider. Instead of a gazillion chargers, you change the tip. I picked up one for my laptop that works both in my car and house. It came with tips for almost every laptop imaginable so I can let others charge in my car, too. I am guessing one of my laptop tips might work for the xoom. Also the laptop charger has a USB port so I can charge my laptop and a device off so USB at the same time.
It would seem 5V would be the norm. Its the amperage that I am wondering.
We know the ipad in which this tablet draws its battery comparison uses 5V and 2.1amps.
We will find out soon enough

The charger is a 12V 1.5A charger. The tip is not a common one; definitely small and looks like it will break easily. I hope decent options come soon for using the contact dots.

I wonder why they went with this kind of connector. Too bad they didn't spend the money to include some kind of inductive charging system. It wouldn't have increased the cost of the tablet that much, maybe $10 in parts.
I just checked EBay and I found combo silicone case + "micro USB car charger" for the xoom. I wonder if the car charger is legit.
Anyone bought a car charger yet? Motorola's is a bit pricey at $30.

i didn't even know there was one... vz/bb didn't have it when i picked my xoom up. i have an inverter but might be good to leave charger at home and just use one in my car. link? 30 is a bit pricey, but in line with what they charge, usually you can get the same thing for 5 on ebay/amazon after a few months. link? all i see are usb car chargers.

Its just on their accessories page for the Xoom:
http://www.motorola.com/consumers/U...toid=8159a96331fec210VgnVCM10000081bbb00aRCRD
Picking up my phone on Monday, and was planning on getting the car charger. But before I spent the extra $30 I figured I would ask you guys. Is it just a standard mini USB? (not sure if mini or micro is the right term).
For instance I found one on Amazon (I can't post the link because I've only been a lurker here until this point). It's called "Premium Car Charger For HTC ThunderBolt"
Product Features
Brand New IC Chip Controlled Plug in Car Charger
State of the art Intelligent Chip circuit prevents overcharging
Conveniently charge your HTC ThunderBolt battery while your drive
Non interrupted charging, even while the HTC ThunderBolt is in use
Essential accessory in case of car accident or another emergency
Thanks in advance, I'd just rather not give Verizon any more $$ then I have to
micro usb is what you want (different from mini), and the home charger outputs 5V and 1A (same as
1000 mA) so you want a car charger that will output the same voltage and close to the same amperage. i used a 750mA car charger for my evo and it was a noticeably slower charge.

anyone try one of these with the stock cable? Or with a $1-$2 replacement cable. Or this Micro car charger they sell
I know monoprice has great quality on their items and the output says 5v and max 1A
According to this, they work just fine http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001962
So the charger + a 6'+ cable will let you go anywhere in your car and more for a little over $3, prolly 5-6 after shipping.

Another +1 for the Motorola charger. Its high quality. I have noticed the plug gets a little loose after a lot of use and wont provide a good connection. I just squeeze the Jack a little with some pliers and that tightens up the fit again.
I use one brought.from att and.its speed for charging is pretty.good.

I want that charger, but not at the $40 price tag.
I bought 2 refurbished at&t chargers ( micro usb) on ebay for $5 from one of those daily deals offers. Been using them about 6 months now, rock solid. Charges most phones faster (imo).
I have the Kensington K33497US PowerBolt Duo in both of my cars as well as on my ZX14. It has 2 USB outlets, a 1 amp and a 2.1 amp. On trips it has no problem keeping our my phone, my wife's phone and/or wife's iPad at full charge. Note: this is with both devices in use (display on and running apps)...

That sounds like a good option for you (albeit expensive), since it sounds like you were using an apple device (the iPad) on the 2.1amp outlet and an Android device on the 1 amp outlet... but it seems that this particular charger is not the best choice for non-apple devices, based on this review. This guy sounds pretty knowledgeable on the subject, and reviewed a few different similar products too, so it's some good reading.
To summarize his reviews across some of the different products he reviewed, it seems as if he has yet to find a 2.1amp/1amp combination charger that (a) supports Android devices out of the box AND (b) can deliver the full 3.1amps at once. He seems to recommend this one (with a little modification) or this one.
Of those two, it seems like latter is a better all-around choice, especially for people who own a mix of apple and non-apple devices. From his review:
"The 2 Amp port appears to be using the Apple protocol for USB power, so that port will only provide 0.5 Amps to most other devices. The upside of this is the 1 Amp port somewhat over delivers, and can source 2 Amps if nothing else is connected and 1.5 Amps if the 2 Amp port is sourcing 0.5 Amps for a non-Apple device. Thus this product can support one-high power non-Apple device (in the 1 Amp port) and one lower power device (in the 2 Amp port)."
Click to collapse
So, my advice is the following:
Understand the differences between the Apple protocol and the non-apple protocol (or at least understand that there is a difference)
Know what types of devices you will use with the charger
Know what protocol the charger uses, and make sure it aligns well with your planned usage
Find out whether the 2.1amp and 1amp ports will work to the full 3.1 together, or if it's capped at 2.1
Read the reviews
But, as I said, that last like I posed above seems to be a good all-around charger at a good price ($9.99 + prime shipping)

Battery Monitor Widget should do what you need. It displays the current current and charge (yes, I made that sound redundant on purpose) for the battery.

Also, as I'm thinking about this more, it seems like ANY app would really only be able to give me NET current, that is... (input)-(amount being used). That wouldn't really allow me to find out how much the charger is putting out, right?
Thank you for all the input.

Yes I believe for the galaxy s3 it only shows the "estimated" amp draw of the device, which is given by that expression.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
After reading the OP on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1754102 the phone will draw either 500ma or 750ma. The type of charge is determined by how the charger handles pins for the USB cable. I wonder if some of the chargers that say they provide 1+ amps have the USB port setup in this manner so that the S3 thinks it's in AC charge mode.
He was talking more about his SGS2 I think. The SGS3 is 750mA or 1A I think.
The 500mA is inline with what I've previously heard about the amount of current available over a single USB port. I re-read his post and it does sound like he's making the assumption that the S2 and S3 are the same.

So no matter where I look, I cannot find good chargers for my GN2. Here I was thinking that I'd be able to use my 10+ white brick crapple charging blocks at 1A and here my awesome GN2 uses a 2A.
Now I understand that Apple swayed away from yet another standard and the pins need to be shorted in almost all car chargers in order for anything other than an apple device to accept an AC charge. Awesome.
I'm very happy that this huge battery needs a 2A charger but I'm back at square one. I need chargers... I need a lot. Please somebody point me in the right direction on what every android peep is doing to charge their phones on fast chargers... I am mostly in need of a car charger. FYI, I just received my new phone, Seidio Surface case and holster. I had the same setup on my original Pixel XL and it worked fine. However, for some reason the bottom of the Pixel 2 XL case is thicker, causing the USB C port to be recessed too far to connect to the plug on my Seidio USB C dock.
I will be contacting them for suggestions, as the two Seidio products should be compatible with each other.
USB C charging for the Nexus 6P was 15w. Power Delivery for the Pixel and Pixel 2 are 18w. Some laptops and macbooks can charge at even a higher rate
I cannot believe that USB type C PD has been out for years and there is not ONE usable dock.

I've never used a dock, but I can't imagine buying a dock like this where all of the phone weight is propped up on the charging port. Those things aren't welded in like a car trailer... they snap all the dang time. I am currently in the market for a USB-C dock, but am specifically looking for one that has a "rest" for my phone.
I've seen a couple out there, but one is Samsung and the other looks identical, but with a different name.
It seems we just need to create our own and we'll sell millions...
I ended up buying this dock. It's great so far even though it doesn't fast charge. I just have it on my night stand so I don't really care about fast charging there. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071HFM217/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ycgdAb6TYTBSR

As theBeachBoy said, that's not a dock, so it's not what people in this thread are looking for. But if anyone is looking to buy a multiport charger that supports PD, I've owned that Anker one for a year. I have it setup near an older iOttie car mount that I use as a dock on my desk, and it works great.
