With the old note 10.1, you could draw a shape on the screen with the s pen to capture that part of the screen. If you didn't want to send it straight to a particular app, you could save it to the clipboard by clicking on it and then access it later.
With the new note 2014 edition, you can only save it straight to a particular app. Clicking on it no longer sends it to the clipboard.
Anyone know of a way around this?
Thanks

I usually s pen capture and then press the scrapbook app. This will save it to the clipboard. I then cancel saving it to scrapbook but it is maintained on the clipboard where it can be accessed at a later time to insert.
It is not ideal but it seems to work.
Thanks for the reply, I'll give that a go....

Is there any way to get an app like s memo back? I'm feeling that the new S note is too bloated and an overall hassle to even open a new clean page.
If not, is there any way to retrieve and view my old notes from my Note 1?
Not sure if this will help you or not but this is what I do. Settings> spen> check "open pop up note". This is a memo note and you can expand it if you need to.
How do I move all my snotes from my note to note 2
You can "share" the note from your Note 1 via SMS or save it to the SD. It will save it as a JPEG. Then you can drop it into a new Note on the Note 2, and you'll be able to draw on it like you would a picture, but you wouldn't be able to erase or directly edit it. Better than nothing.
If you Double Tap the S pen with the button on the screen it will open Memos as a floating window like it did on the Note 1. If you expand it it will open in Notes.

Ah, I do have all my notes saved on my SD card, but... they aren't jpegs
Try sending your old notes WiFi Direct, maybe that would work, I'd try it.
I have to admit it, I like using my S-Pen with S-Note on my Galaxy Note 2, unfortunately it only works in TouchWiz and not CM, AOKP, or Stock Android custom ROMS. And it can be excrutiatingly sluggish even on my Galaxy Note 2.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT SAMSUNG'S S-NOTE app:
1. You can call up a floating pop up note from any application so that you can start taking notes with the S-Pen or with the soft keyboard if you so choose. This has proven very useful during a call when you have to jot something down.
2. S-Note Widget. I like how you can select to see the notes and folders list, or a list of templates to create a new note.
3. I like how you can use the S-Pen whilst pressing on the S-Pen button to freehand selection, capture, and sharing of anything on the screen from any app and then save/share with other compatible apps. Very useful feature. Of course being able to import images into the note is very important.
4. Tagging notes
5. Syncing notes (albeit to Samsung's servers)
OTHER FEATURES REQUESTS for my perfect Note/stylus app
1. In S-Note, list view, I wish we could drag and drop (single or multiple) notes and/or folders into folders with the S-Pen, or custom rearrange them by dragging and dropping. It would be much more intuitive and less cumbersome and tedious. I could take hundreds of notes but then to have to individually menu click on them to move and organize them is just toooo much work and really overweighs the usefulness of the app with the more notes you take.
2. In S-Note, I wish to remove the file name overlay on the note icons, I would rather see the full contents of what I wrote on the note, and the overlays never are able to show the entire file name anyway, so basically useless and in contrary to the clarity of the user interface.
3. in TouchWiz I wish the pop up note (or any pop up window for that matter) could be resizable to a custom size on the screen by clicking and dragging the corners. Right now you only have the option of full size or part-sized.
4. I wish we could call up a pop up window of a selected note from S-Note, so that we can reference it while we are doing other things like dialing a number, or checking something on the browser.
5. CUSTOMIZABLE TEMPLATES, come on, just give us option to make custom templates, and the ability to apply that template to every new note, even pop up notes. Right now I dislike all the ruled and graphed templates so I have to click and select a blank page every time I make a new note. ARGH
6. PAGE SIZE, come on Samsung, the templates should have a page size option, or else infinite (like Papyrus)
7. I wish to have size customizable text boxes and placement.
8. SPEED. the S-Note is SEVERELY LAGGED in my opinion. I mean I'm waiting at least 1 second for each creation of a new note, menu clicking to fix my template, menu clicking to select my pen type, etc. AWFUL SAMSUNG AWFUL.
9. VECTOR based strokes and drawings. This is not a feature of S-Note BUT one of my BIGGEST WISHLIST features. VECTOR graphics for S-Pen drawing/writing (like in Papyrus app). I NEED THIS SO BAD. It is just so much faster, cleaner, and RESIZABLE without destroying the quality of the line/stroke
10. I wish there was a DIRECTLY EDITABLE WIDGET for S-Note OR ANY other S-Pen note app that you can directly write onto from the homescreen without needing to press any other clicks other than to choose finger, pen and finger, or soft keyboard input (but with SPen as default). After writing a memo on the widget (with choice of S-Pen, finger, or soft keyboard) you would just click on a save button or something similar, and that memo would just be saved, the widget would then clear itself and be ready for the next note to be inputed. It would have to have option for palm and finger rejection so that you don't accidentally write a note when you are trying to swipe to another homescreen.
11. The ability to open and annotate PDF files that could be saved and seen from other PDF apps crossplatform
THE OTHER APPS I'VE TRIED:
Papyrus
(actually my favorite for actually writing and drawing with the stylus and it is super speedy and accurate, there is no lag at all with this app. But because it lacks the more robust features of the S-Note ie. No widget at all and no sharing to the app, no pop up memo, etc etc). If the developer of Papyrus is reading, my above features requests would make you the #1 note taking app.
Memo
meh
Lecture Notes
meh, I don't know, is this what college kids are going for these days?
OneNote
whatever, haven't really tried it
GNotes
I like how it auto syncs with Gmail account, but the features are too rudimentary and basic, and well, useless to me
A BIT OFF TOPIC, CLOUD NOTES ANNOTATING & BOOKMARKING APPS (no hand writing features)
Evernote
meh, we know it's the most popular and polished one, but it still lacks my most wanted features concerning bookmarking and annotating for cloud based apps that I haven't even mentioned in the above.
Catch
I tend to switch between Evernote and Catch a lot, I don't exactly know why. But even though Catch lacks even more features than Evernote, the simplicity and immediateness of it is compelling.
Power Note (Diigo)
In my opinion, Diigo is actually the most USEFUL web annotating app out of all the apps I've tried so far to date, and trust me I have wasted much of my time trying to try all of them. The Android Power Note app however, is pretty useless other than to reference your Diigo library. I wish they made a better more polished Android app so we could also highlight and annotate webpages from our Android and other mobile devices, and just cleaned up polished up and leaned up in general across the board. If they implement that as well as PDF annotation, and a more robust free note taking like in Evernote and Catch, they would be supreme. And if they went as far as allowing web app cloud based syncing of hand written vector based OCR page layout notes from any platform and device, eh, FUGGEHDABODIT. It would be #1.
I've found S-note and papyrus both to be quite good for note taking. nothing beats ezpdf for pdf annotation. skitch in combination with evernote is also pretty nice for annotating web pages if you want it saved in evernote (or you can share it to s-note or save it as a pdf to use with ezpdf if you don't care about it being in evernote).
Honestly S-Note is pretty good. The one thing I'm dying for is for the handwriting input to automatically enter a space after recognizing a word.

+1 sometimes remembering to put the space is annoying. But the handwriting recognition works pretty well. I also would like to be able to add more fonts (like a handwriting font) to the handwriting recognition.
I use the asus supernote app. Jusslt google an apk of it. Lots of features that nake it easier to use in class... for me at least.

One of my concerns with S Note is that I will be stuck with Samsung Touchwiz and Galaxy Note to use it, it will be hard to be available on other phones and especially if not Touchwiz.

I've been using LectureNotes for the past week or so in my Organic Chem and Physics 2 classes. I've compared it to S Note, Papyrus, and a couple others..
This is the only one that meets most (nearly all) of my needs, and the developer is extremely quick with responses/feature additions/problem correction.
Right now the default program is Paper Artist, which I don't care for, specially since I don't know how to disable all of those fruity filter overlays. I'd rather open it with something different.
Ideas?
Update: just froze Paper Artist with TB, looks like it might be hard coded to use that app

Clear defaults for that app. You Must have set it as a default. When I do a screen shot I get like 6 options. I never set a default app to handle screenshots.

You are wrong. No defaults is set for note2 and it will directly open paper artist without any choice. The edit key is junk and you must open the picture and select edit. Then you can use your own editor.
spent over hours and still cannot find a solution to make the "edit" button on notification bar to work with other app. giving up and wait for a patch
Not the best solution, but this worked for me: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/29473/ok-android-jelly-bean-reset-app-preferences/
As the OP realized, the Note II is hard-wired to launch Paper Artist by default in that instance, even when no defaults are defined in that particular app. Put another way, it's in the stock ROM.
If flashing another ROM outright isn't desirable ( and is likely overkill ), there are still a couple of options. For the benefit of future readers who stumble upon this page :
• See if there's an Xposed Framework module that takes care of it, possibly as part of a package along with other mods. If unfamiliar with Xposed, take a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/framework-xposed-rom-modding-modifying-t1574401
• If the device is rooted and Paper Artist will likely not be used in any context, the app can be frozen—or outright uninstalled—using Titanium Backup. Titanium will issue a warning if uninstalling, because Paper Artist is a stock app… but it's also a standalone app and will not cause problems if uninstalled. That said, freezing is of course the safer option. Either way, the impact will be the same : the post-screenshot message in the notification panel from then on will change to "Screenshot captured – Touch to view your screenshot". Tap it and it will open in the stock Gallery, and from there the image can be taken anywhere by tapping the Share symbol at the top ("Share via…" pops up followed by a list of every app on the device that can open that file type ).
That last option may look more involved than it is, but it's only one extra step : instead of screenshot direct to editing app, it's screenshot to Gallery to editing app. Also note that whenever the editing in question involves only very basic functions ( cropping, markups, framing ), it can be done directly in the stock Gallery app, without necessarily taking it further.
When I select an area of the screen with the S-pen lasso, I can copy the image to the scrapbook.
However, this image doesn't show up in the gallery. (When I do a whole screen capture, it does show up there).
Is there any way to make the image captured show up in some folder on the gallery?
The reason I ask is that I'd like to import these images into Papyrus, and the image importer there only allows a limited number of apps to choose the image. One of them is gallery, so if Icould make the scrap appear in the gallery, that would solve my problem. Or, maybe there is some other app that works with Papyrus. For now, the best I found is exporting the scrap to Dropbox, and then pasting from Dropbox - a bit too coomplicated...

I use the Share Via function to put them into either LectureNotes or Snote. Papyrus doesn't come up in the window. If you are not "set" in using just Papyrus I'd give LectureNotes a shot

Nice! So I have to do the following operations:
1. Laso
2. Select scrapbook for receiving the image
3. open scrapbook app
4. long click on image for save in galery
5. open papyrus
6. select image tool, galery
7. import image from Scrapbook folder.
Almost bearable... is there any shortcut one can make (I notice you have scrapbook in a window. Maybe if I had scrapbook in one window and papyrus in another?)
I guess best is if Papyrus would accept scraps...

I use lecture notes quite a lot. But try this: download Adam Smith's "the wealth of nations" in pdf. Then import
it into a lecturenotes note. Painful It is 786 pages.
Import into Papyrus is almost instantenous. I think Papyrus keeps it in vector form. Which also means you can zoom in and still see nicely formed characters.

Can't you "copy" from Scrapbook and "paste" in to Papyrus? Failing that, see if "clipboard" is an import option in Papyrus. That's where the image will be after you copy it from Scrapbook.

Maybe it depends what apps you have. Perhaps instead you could take a screenshot and crop it before you save. my gallery has a folder for edited images where these go if I do it that way.
Put ur image into Google drive, then import from there

Saving to Gallery isn't an option for me either.
Old note app
After reading all of these posts I am wondering if anyone has used the old note 10.1. I used my old note 10.1 for school. It worked very well but the digitizer broke and I upgraded to a 2014 version. It is a total disappointment. In the previous version when I last lasso'd something like an equation from a textbook all I had to do was wait a few seconds and the lasso'd image disappeared and saved directly to the clipboard. Then I could just go to lecture notes click Import image and it would be saved right there in the gallery. Why have I lost functionality with a newer tablet? Will a root fix this? Can I use the old note app and settings on my tablet? S note itself is garbage but the pin is awesome when it actually works. It just seems this Samsung is unlearning how to make tablets. All I want to do is lasso an image and have it saved directly to the clipboard.
@sendeth: The `lassoed´ material should show up when you select `Paste from non-standard clipboard´ in LectureNotes' `cutter´ menu.
?
First, I don't see that option anywhere. Second, pretty sure that won't matter since my issue is with saving, not pasting or recovering. To reiterate, this is something the old note did automatically.
Edit: I found the menu option. I will experiment with it. Still much clunkier than my old note.
Hi all,
I'm hoping there is a simple solution to my issues with the Quick Memo shortcut, when using this facility either via the back button or the home page button I can write the memo, hit the save icon and I get 2 options, save in Gallery or save in Quick Memo, only the thing is which ever one I choose, the memo page closes and the memo isn't saved in either location, I doubt it's a settings issue because it randomly works,
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
PS I have had a look to see if something similar hyas been asked before, apologies if I have missed it,
