[Q] Ace II stock unbearably slow. Kernel/ROM suggestions? - Galaxy Ace II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey people,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 I8160 last Christmas for my girlfriend. A couple of months ago, I updated it to 4.1.2 stock. The phone is rather slow and every now and then is freezes for some seconds. Sometimes it loses the data connection for minutes and doesn't come back after restarting or airplane mode.
I was looking for a possible custom ROM, but nothing seems very stable. The problem is that we live far from each other to let her have something that could break any moment. Does anyone has any suggestions for an alternate Kernel or ROM which is stable and possibly fixes these problems?
Cheers guys.

You wont understand what's stable until you test, most likely cm10/10.1
Sent from my GT-I8160

You should read all ROM topics and than select which ROM's and their bugs acceptable for you. Some bugs are common some problems ROM specific.

If you have a wifi connection-
Try every rom and choose what best suits you. That's how you find 'your' best rom/preference

According to my personal experience and taste, KyrillosV9 + the old version of D-Kernel for stock roms gives the best combination of features and stability (all hardware working, font replacement if you can still find the megapack, as fast as stock Gingerbread with 624MB of RAM plus app compatibility...)
Close second candidate would be Cyanogen10.1, the 2013/10/17 release is stable and uses even less RAM, but I don't like the AOSP theme and the final perfect version is in the works!

Use touchwiz 5.0 theme
But true, a themechooser theme couldnt replicate a toucwiz feeling
Sent from my GT-I8160

I also have basically the same question. I'll consider the ROM suggestions above.
I have never rooted a phone before or installed a ROM.
I also have a sometimes very slow phone. For example Tethering seems to bring everything to a crawl. This is solved by rebooting the phone.
I've been looking at ...
* Cyanogenmod 10 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342997
- Low in-call volume
* CyanogenMod 10.1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2452315
- Requires I8160XXMG2 firmware. Phone is currently I8160XXMF1
- Low volume on calls awaiting fix
* CyanogenMod 10.2 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2495541
Is, 10.2 for example, ready for prime time ? How serious is this low volume problem ? I am considering installing but if I can't hear calls then there's not much point. A fix appears to be in the works which is dependent on CM source. How long on average might that take ?
Lastly will CM solve the problem with the Ace II of having a very small storage area for installing protected storage apps ? Will I be able to install anything on my 32gig external SD card if I have CM installed ?

1: Not really: still unpolished and with significant GPS problems.
2: I don't experience that bug, and anyway the temporary workaround is simply pressing volume down then up each time.
3: Not by default, but it can be done quite easily by adding 2 lines to the build.prop file :good:

Can you clarify a bit what you mean by this ? Is this a way to fix the GPS ? If so then I may install, especially if the volume problem can be fixed by just adjusting the volume control.

Quarx will solve that in the next build don't worry. It's not working for anyone. It's just a Demo rom so please wait until master quarx releases a daily usable rom.

New unofficial version
After install some times in nany ways and settings I confirmed that new 4.2 version is good for defy hardware and custom kernel.
I still worry when Quarx2k implements the CM feautures if this is bug the rom.
But now...
1 - With or without gapps (4.2 or 4.1.2) the initial settings show erros.
2 - GSM signal is very weak, but phone tottaly functional.
3 - Widgets are not full sized on screen ( all go to left on screen).
4 - Phone with lot of memory and flows very good.
Where can I download gapps 4.2?
I hope the data dropouts i have in CM10 will be solved in CM10.1 but dont have my hopes up to high because they been there so long now that i dont even know when they started, might have been already on CM9 but im not sure.
Another thing that worries me a bit is that the system space is not big enough while internal storage atleast for me is on over 1GB, possible to make the system space bigger?
Cheers?

We can't resize system rom, because we have locked bootloader & i think 2ndboot will not help. Solution - unistall not need system apps, hint: unistall CMWallpapers - it will free about 10MB in SROM
Could this app solve the SD problem?

What's the point of this question??
You are in a stupid confusion!
Both are UNOFFICIAL ( Who cares though )
I don't want a tapatalk sig!

What I would like is a simple ICS rom, but there are none!

Yep.
I just wish there was stock ICS for the HOV. Vanilla ics rom is close but it still has sense left over.
cm9 is far too unstable, and all my attempts at flashing various roms of JB are instable/not daily driver ready.
There don't seem to be any truly usable roms for this device. Stock sense is the only build in which everything works.
It's either one thing or another. If the camcorder works, the build might not work with simple apps like voxer. If voxer works, then mms won't work. If JB runs perfectly stable, then maybe the camcorder doesn't work. Does a rom that works without bugs like this exist? Here are a list of things I would need in a daily driver rom:
1. Camcorder- I'm a skater and I like to film fun edits of me and my hoodrat friends doing hoodrat things on our skates.
2. MMS - Such a simple necessity.
3. App compatibility -It drives me crazy when my important apps like voxer, instagram, facebook, and launchers lag badly or crash every time I open them
4. LAG - this is why I can't upgrade to JB, I thought provision Rom was AMAZING until I started using my apps (see #3)
5. Simple Multitasking
6. Random reboots - doesn't bother me too much but I could see it happening in some situation where I would need the phone immediately and have to try and explain to someone that "Herp, muh super custom droid phone likes to reboot so you'll just have to wait."
So far the only thing I can think of doing is building a stock ics rom (which I have no idea how to do). Any tips, first timer here.
Right now I just flashed back to stock and am going to run the de-sense tool. Why must OEMs ruin everything we love?
I hate to complain like this and I'm very glad there are devs working on the problems I describe. I guess I'm just venting my frustration. I love this phone but I have spent so much time trying to get a stock android experience that works. I would just buy galaxy nexus or an S3 but I'm a college and pre-paid cheap phones are the only way to fly right now, man. Sorry to sound so negative throughout the post but these are simply my observations in contrast with my needs and wants.
BTW first post on here. Don't hate me plz.

ok thanks! The only cm9 I could find was on the cdma dev forum and it said a number of things including the camcorder didn't work.
...and then I googled it and found exactly what I needed. Flashing now. We'll see how this works. Was there something I'm missing? I looked at this one [CDMA/PRIMOC][ROM] Unofficial CM9 for PrimoC Beta
480p video recording kind of suck but it'll have to do I guess.
Before u go knocking on peoples stuff how about u make a effort to fix it ur self and u can't say well I don't know how. Well sir u know that little company that bought android os yea sell they Also have a easy to use search bar and so does this little site u are on

Don't know about comatibility/stability. Using CM10 from Lloir and works flawless for me, and yes, I'm using mms, camcorder, apps of a wide range, and yes, this is my primer and only phone, so I can say that it is stable too. Only camcorder problem I found that autofocus is somehow misbehaving in video recording.
Full wipe is essential for stability if you flash a rom that is based on something else, than the last one you used. I even erase sometimes the sdcards android and secure partitions if must. I tried Lloir's slimbean just this morning and seems promising enough, really thinking about to change to that rom permanently.
Full wipe means:
Factory reset (this will delete cache and dalvik cache - this will also remove the .android_secure folder)
Wipe system
Flash rom
Flash the correct kernel in bootloader
Reboot your phone
Voila, rom without any issues at all!
Don't tell me you did all these and you still have problems with JB and other custom roms. I just don't buy it. Everyone here that uses a custom rom are so enthusiastic about them, they don't even wanna get back on sense. I am having Paranoid Android on my One V from the moment I started making the rom for us, since August. From then onwards, I've only used this rom. I don't think that there are any kind of instability with it, because I test my roms before releasing them so if it was unstable, why should've I used it for more than 4 months now?

1. I do all those. This is is my third android device. I used to have a galaxy tab 2 rom'd with cm10 and it was awesome. But even it had some problems with app compatibility. I got my learning in on that device. I nearly bricked it 3-4 times haha.
2. We use our phones differently. There are probably a ton of apps I use and a ton you don't. I know for sure that draw something is incompatible with JB itself.
I'll probably flash PA soon if some issues pop up with the cm9 build I'm using now.
Draw something is compatible with jellybean no doubt since I installed it on my HOV and it works.

UNOFFICIAL CM10.1 for Intl Optimus G (E975)

Hi everyone, at popular demand, here is the CM10.1 rom for E975.
What is working
Everything.
What is not working
You tell me.
Here are the repo needed for our devices :
https://github.com/TeamLGOG
Using google URL short link because our organization name is not a safe word. Not to say that I didn't choose the name.
Of course, you have to be rooted, to have bootloader unlocked and a working recovery to flash this custom rom. I will post a first rom soon, it will be really early alpha tho and bug reporting is welcome to make a good list of things to fix. Any help is also welcome.
DO NOT FLASH NEXUS 4 KERNEL MADE BY 3rd PARTY. THIS WILL MOSTLY PERMA BRICK YOUR DEVICE.
This is simply because people tend to use partition number and not by-name and our partition is different than nexus 4 ones. i.e. The rpm partition on our phone is the boot partition on nexus 4. So flashing a custom kernel will flash a boot.img in your rpm partition and then you are bricked. You have been warned.
Like usually, i can't be hold responsible if you damage your phone during any of the process described in this thread.

All the downloads will go here :
ribs.bbqdroid.org
(If a rom is labelled notouch or donotflash, i recommand you to not flash it.)
Gapps package :
http://goo.im/gapps
Modem :
There is a newer modem now available (From JB update. Houstonn and I extracted each of them and made flashable so you don't need to do the painful process of kdz only to get a new baseband)
MAKE SURE TO NOT FLASH KOREAN MODEM.
http://downloads.codefi.re/houstonn/lgog/modem
This require you to have TWRP or CWM already installed on your device. I recommand the former. On our device, this mainly mean you have rooted your phone and unlocked the bootloader.
Apparently, it seems these instruction where not clear enough. So I'll try to make them dumbproof. If you are not following these instruction and it doesnt work, dont expect support. It's like buying a cake mix where you only need to add milk and call the company saying their product is bull****, you added water and only got a brick. To add to this metaphor, Asking if it's because you used CWM instead of twrp or reverse is like saying : Did it didnt work because i used a fork instead of a whip to mix it ?
Download file in the download section.
Put the rom AND the gapps on your internal SDCard.
Reboot into recovery.
Flash CM rom.
Flash Gapps package.
DO A FACTORY RESET (EMPHASIS HERE)
reboot into system
First build uploaded. I see download but no feedback. Does it work ?
Will test it when ill be home.

telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1
ro.telephony.default_network=8
ro.ril.def.preferred.network=8
ril.subscription.types=NV,RUIM
2)Factory reset. Actually that was what he adviced, and that didnt work lol.
3)So i moved to mobile network settings, changed the subscription from NV to RUIM/SIM
4)Reset
5)Profit
P.S. Im very happy today!

I loved the CM for E973 and I really hate to use the stock ROM at the time.. it so ugly, buggy, slower and uses way more battery (of my experince)
Nevermind, solved
By ghe way i believe there a bug with main camera, the scenery options doesnt work, and seems like instead of auto its set as a lamp or something like that. And u cant change it lol

I actually use the W6MP, i want widescreen photos - is that an option here?
@tim, on galaxy note it took alot of time to improve the camera.when 4.2.2 first hit the note, the camera was crappy.and samsung has alot of support from CM.Now,with lg, not so sure, there aren't many devs,so it will take time.Better fix the kernel and we can use 3rd party apps to take photos and videos.
@nick, yes, with lgcamera pro you can take widescreen photos.Besides,it has alot of features.you can try the free version before buy it.
@chad,if you ever need a guinea pig to test things, let me know .
Hi, Does this rom goes for the L-01E?
Chad,like i said,great job and thanks.
Some issues though:
1.dialer error, when i'm initiating a call,i get "call ended" message and the dialer exits almost instantly, but the call continues and it's shown on statusbar after 2-3 seconds.
2.when i open stock dialer,i get a fc on contacts.if i open contacts from app drawer,i don't have option to initiate call.
Btw,this happens with any dialer from playstore.
This is it for now, will report later.

Well I am not aware of any 4.0 or above ROMs that can be flashed via ODIN. I am sure if any developer wants, they may be able to do it but I really think that flashing via recovery is always a better choice compared to ODIN. I see no advantage for ODIN flash...
Do you mind telling me why do you need odin flash???
Well..

Well, I'm more familiar with Odin flashing compared to recovery mode, and it's a whole lot easier compared to other flashing methods. I don't find that the recovery mode is easy to understand, so you mind to provide me the steps (better if they are easier to understand and follow) and also a link to a stable Android 4.0 Rom?

Do you have root access on your phone? Every step is actually quite easy to follow. There are really good guides on both general and development sections. But beforewe delve into howto's you should clarify what constitutes STABLE for you...
We have ICS (4.04) as well as JB ( 4.1.2 and 4.2.2) in the development section. All are pretty good but here and there they may have some bugs. Just go to their threads check them out. On the very first page of a ROM thread what works and what doesn't are listed. Decide whether you can live with one of them then we can talk about howto's.
I recommend CM9, CM10 and CM10.1 all from the developer arco68...
OHHH with a custom recovery, you don't even need a computer to flash a new ROM. That surely is a bonus...

I have root access on my phone. Well, I don't see the ROM thread that you mentioned. Stable means that the ROM is not easy to crash or eats up my RAM even when I'm not using it, while common bugs are still acceptable if they can be fixed (I can't find threads from arco68, so I don't know what you mean by his CM9 and all those so...)
Hope you can enlighten me more about this recovery method and the difference between the CMs (if possible, also include any differences between ICS and JB b'coz I don't know which one to choose)
Recovery is super easy:
Download the zip and put it on your SD (internal or external, makes no difference)
Then turn of your phone
Press and hold Volume up + Power button + home button
Once the screen turns on, release the power button, but keep holding onto the other two
Then the recovery menu shows up
choose install zip from SD
select the zip and hit install
finished
Here are the links, with more detailed instruction on how to do it

Ups and downs?
Are there any down sides regarding the CM9 mod? And can I change the shortcuts on the lockscreen if I install CM9?
And also, what is CWM actually? I don't understand from the FAQs in the forums or other sites, so can you tell me what CWM is (CWM5 or CWM6) and how to access or install that?
Sorry, I'm really considered a total newbie in this sort of stuff 8(>o<)8

Its a kind of recovery, called ClockworkMOD. Now its the 6.0.3.0 version if I'm not wrong...
Linky: here
Okay, the process of installation of a custom recovery is tedious. Link: here DO NOT USE THE FILES IN THIS PAGE. JUST THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Now, flash the ROM (any of the three is fine. I personally recommend CM9 or 10 cus its in its RC stages, which means Resource... something)
The instructions is on the ROM page itself. And you're done. I or arco are not held responsible if your phone is screwed up in the process (very little chance) or
if your heart fails because its loading for a longer period than it should be.

In CM9, I see that the ClockworkMod needed is 5.5.xxxx, so wouldn't CM9 crash if i use the 6.0.3.0 version instead of 5.5.xxxx?
And also, does the CM9 have any bugs? Because I saw some in the posts by people about CM10 but not CM9 (refer to links of above comments)
Anyway, it is a pleasure to receive help from you and the person above.

Well obviously, since its a custom ROM, its bound to have bugs. There's no such thing as a "perfect" ROM. And I have 6.0.1.something CWM and I have flashed every single ROM, from 9-10.1. So it shouldn't be a problem.

I believe I have caused some misinterpretation here. What I mean is that I want to know if there is anything that's not working in CM9. The stuff below is found from the CM9 thread.
What's working:
Audio
Receiving and making calls
GPS
Compass
Proximity sensor
Wifi
Bluetooth
USB mass storage
HW accelerated gui
HW accelerated video
Camera
Torch
Wifi and USB tethering
There isn't anything that's not shown as "not working", so I'm asking you about it just for confirmation.
If there isn't anything, I will flash CM9 soon.

I just noticed something in your post. Just to clarify, RC mean "Release Candidate" not resource something... Just so you know. First alpha's come, then beta's, and right before a FINAL version is released in which most of the bugs are squashed, a release candidate comes to make sure everything is working. If for example, no bugs remain in a release candidate, it is renamed to FINAL as far as I know
However, there are different understanding of these names on the internet. For example, for some, once a product is in a BETA phase, no more new features added from there on. However, that may not be true for CM releases here, I am not sure.
and @zacszy, both CM9 and CM10 are pretty stable. I have not encountered any show stopping bugs but that maybe because of the way I use my phone, as I dont play games. I use it mostly for productivity, internet surfing, couple of youtube videos, music...
Try them all. I am sure you will pick one that suits your needs..

Thanks for the definition. Just saying, you can't call it fully stable cuz .... well that's impossible. It is only nearly stable.... you may have not said it but I'm just saying. Haha

For memory management, i trust it to NX engine tweak and sreeder in int.d folder, u can try it. dont forget too make bakcup firts, ( but you have to install int.d first), for facebook some times i got lag on it . but not often.
i've tried many roms n tweaks, GB is still the best (least bugs).
minimalist stock GB, ie. removed all samsung bloated apps, add my own tweaks and use black wallpaper. :good:
I flashed back to stock (then rooted and debloated it) just for "old times sake"............
Might flash to KitKat if there is an option to swap storage partitions.....

Dark CM is based on CM11 = KitKat.
KhaN is compatible with arco's BUT arco's doesn't support swap and also was kinda buggy for me. But Arco is really great as all builds are based on his work
Most reliable release yet for me was Mokee OS
Just flashed Dark CM........
Seems kinda strange (in a good way) to see those three little numbers.....
4.4.2
being displayed on my W......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
best is still rooted stock rom without samsung bloated widgets, add my own tweaks (with init.d support).
no fc, no bugs (compared to custom roms), longest battery operating life (if dun play power hungry game like candy crush).
normal usage, ie. phone, messaging, listen to music n radio, battery at 50% after 2 days 10hrs. :good:
play power-hungry games (candy crush sage), last 3~4hrs.
edit:
charging was due to transferring of video clips when usb was plugged, ti also charge the phone.
anyway, it still is far better than buggy custom roms, ie. i have to charge my phone every day.

rooted stock rom with superuser, busybox, root explorer and init.d support (do a search in xda forum) or a script manager.
remove all tweaks or enhancement apps, no need any.
i find tat most dont work becoz they r directed at non-existence, non-changeable, non-rewriteable or non-virtualise parameters.
a placebo effect(s) if u believe their tweaks really works or it works on benchmarking but severely lagging in real life usage or at random, sometime good and sometime bad, unknown and uncertain.
i complied tweaks tat i find it works and re-direct parameters so it will work properly.
note: not for any other phone (not even gw custom roms), strictly for rooted stock rom gw only.
.
attached is rar (zipped two files), one is an add-on file for build, prop and a script file (these r not flash-able files).
unzip and copy to your phone sdcard.
add-on file, open build.prop.addon file, copy all texts and close.
open build.prop in /system and paste texts at the end of file, save file.
script file, either use init.d support, copy n paste script file to etc/init.d, change permission chown to root, shell
or use script manager to load at boot.
done, reboot.
note:
use it at your own risk, it's working great on my phone.
always do a nandroid backup, just in case u screw it up.
