Do you use Nova Launcher? If so, then this is easy - I have my brightness slider set so that it pops up if I touch the home key when i'm on the home screen, but you can allocate any custom action to it (i.e slide up on home screen) - you can also just put a shortcut to it on the home screen or use something like widgetsoid to place a shortcut in your notification shade.
If you do use Nova Launcher, here's how to do it:
To activate when swiping up on home screen:
go to Nova settings
gestures and buttons
select 'swipe up'
choose 'shortcuts'
choose 'activities'
choose 'settings'
Select 'BrightnessPreferenceActivity'
Done. Now when you swipe up on the home screen, the brightness slider will appear.

Anybody notice that it's not quite as responsive as, say, TouchWiz?
Like there's a tiny delay when sliding screens..
How can I add an application into the home screen folder? I cannot seem to drag it directly into the folder.
Yeah I haven't really found a launcher that's as responsive as touchwiz... MAYBE launcher pro but I think touchwiz is the smoothest and most responsive. If only it had all those other features =\

Touch the app in the apps drawer, then drag it to the bottom of the page all the homes screens open, simply drop to required screen.
To change dock apps, touch and drag them off the dock drag new app on.
Apps in the dock, can have a second app added by long touching one and selecting change gesture, this enables your choice of app when you (not touch) slide your finger up the icon.

Can Golauncher create shortcuts to specific Settings screens etc like LauncherPro+?

doesn't work. To clarify, the screen is already packed, with 16 folders. If I just drop the app onto the page, it says operation failed becoz the page is full. I need to drop the app into a specific folder but it doesn't allow me to.

That wouldnt work as that would only be for horizontal orientation, cylinder doesn't show when using vertical orientation

Move the folder to an empty screen, then drop the app where you want it and then put it into the folder you want. Yes?
I have a couple of questions (sorry, new to GO Launcher) -
Can you boot straight into GO Launcher..???
Also, is there anyway of stopping the main menu button going back to the default Samsung menu..?

Start home switcher, in the bottom left corner click 'clear default' it will take you to another screen, at the right hand side of the screen look for 'Clear defaults' click it.
Now when you press the home button you will get the choice, before selecting check the 'Set as default' box then select Go launcher EX.
Note; to return another launcher as default repeat above...
Enjoy

To hide and / or replace the navigation buttons on Xperia M I would like to recommend GMD AutoHide Soft Keys.
I have installed it and it works perfect
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/themes-apps/root-gmd-autohide-soft-keys-t2253770
It is highly customizable
You can set the bar that appears when you slide from the bottom and hide by tapping the side
This lets you use the phone with the slightly larger screen
regards
Nice
Works great
Thanks for the tip. One problem I keep having is hitting the home key instead of the space bar while texting. Very annoying! I will try this app and see if I can solve this problem and report back.
Edit: Okay, after a few hours playing with it (pro version) here are my experiences with it with Xperia M:
1) Changed my wallpaper without asking
2) Removed alarm notification from top notification tray, had to reset (turn off then on) my alarms to get it back
3) Removed battery percentage symbol from top notification tray, had to toggle it off and on in settings to get it back
4) "Spoof Soft Keys" option does nothing. What's it supposed to do? I am assuming it would make a clear space where the regular softkeys would be in effect pushing everything back up but toggling that option does nothing at all.
5) The quickbar does not work (cannot be swiped or tapped into view) when the far right icon "Recent Apps Button" is selected. You have to tap somewhere on the screen in order to back get out of recent apps view (the small apps launcher is probably too blame)
6) The selectable Xperia icons in the app are not the same as our Xpermia M icons
Edit 2
7) App doesn't work automatically on reboot with Xperia M. I had to actually click on its icon to get it to work again after a reboot. No good, uninstalled it
theres an alternative for hide nav bar, using UDN lite
original thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2270198
use xposed to work properly
works great on stock and cm 11 beta 3

Yes, after two days of testing UDN is working fine for me too. Just sucks that you have to install a seperate module (Xposed) to make it work

You can use build.prop to hide the soft key navigator, so Xposed is no need. But I don't like this method, this seems to be a pain when undo if this UDN suddenly stop working
Hi
Is there a way to add quick buttons to the notification drawer (the one you open by just swiping down on the screen, I mean), instead of tapping the upper-right button first?
There are very few options I use very often (like wifi on/off, plane mode on/off, rotation on/off) and I wish I could have those buttons directly in the notification drawer, instead of doing one more tap on the related button.
Any idea?
I've looked over the Internet but I can mainly find either apps that include other apps in the drawer or development explanations. I would just like to have a "widget" at the top of the drawer.
Thanks

This doesn't really answer your question, and you probably know this, but there are certainly widgets or mini-apps or something that would let you put something on your home screen (or a different screen) to control those things.

Yeah there's a native widget doing this, thank you.
Yet I'm looking for the same thing in the notification drawer.
In the meantime, if you know a widget that I could freely customize, plese feel free to tell
Nova Launcher might make things easier

So this is not a complete solution, but it will get you closer to what you are looking for. The pre condition is that you have to be using Nova launcher or any other launcher that supports gestures. So in case of Nova, you change the swipe down gesture to "Expand Quick Settings". This way at least when you are on the home screen, you can quickly get to your settings by swiping down or whatever other gesture you use.
I frequently do things on my phone while it's lying on it's back on a table, rendering the lock button and volume buttons on the back useless. Is there a way to add a lock button to the home touch buttons or notification panel?
If you're using the default launcher, double tap on the screen to lock.
If you're using another launcher, such as Nova, double tap the notification bar at the top of the screen.
You can also use Tasker to create a lock shortcut action and icon.
And if you have Tasker AND Nova, you can assign a double tap gesture on the launcher to start the shortcut action.
If you're using a third party launcher that supports gestures, you can use this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
This all is also really handy:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures
Double tap the notification panel without expanding it and it will lock or a blank spot on the home screens/lock screen.
I use greenify, if you swipe up it gives you the option for Google now or hibernate+lock screen, its nice because my fingers are usually right at the home buttom

+1 super simple. Works from any screen.
With the G2 you could swipe up from the button and acces quickmemo.
There's only a google search option with the G4, any way to change this?

Not that I've found. there are two other good options:
1) Add QuickMemo+ to your quick shortcuts in the notification panel
2) add a shortcut to your lock screen
This should work.
Settings > Apps > (Menu) Reset Default Apps
Clear whichever one it is, and redo the action and you should get an option to reassign + some other options
Mine gives me the option to call out a tasker task or greenify screen off+lock which is what I do so i can turn the screenoff even from a full screen app without using the button on the back.
