Pick up a USB OTG Cable and get a flash drive (flash drives are preferred over actual external hard drives, unless the hard drives has external power).
Buy the Nexus Media Importer app ($3 or $4, cant remember).
Done!
If you only need to read to it, then having the USB drive as NTFS is fine. If you need to write to it as well, it'll need to be Fat or Fat32 (keep in mind, it's a little tougher to format anything over 32GB to Fat32. Usually need a 3rd party program)

If you use Nexus Media Importer, no root required. If you are rooted, you can use Stickmount (free I believe).

Yeah, I know it does, but I was hoping I could get it under settings too, to see how much of music, apps, etc are taking it up.
Or maybe a way I can even mount it as a SD card.
Ahh I see then I have no answer

[Q] USB OTB/Micro SD Card Reader

Question question regarding USB OTG Cables/Micro SD Card Readers. I know you can view content on them (movies, music, documents, etc). However, can you write to the flash drive/micro sd card? Basically, I'm curious because I know I could store roms on the flash drive or micro sd and play them from there, but I would like to store saves to it as well (so saves would not have to be stored on the Nexus 7).
I'm interested in the Meenova MicroSD Card Reader (I go for the card reader over a USB OTG because I do not need a large flash drive - a 64GB micro sdxc is sufficient), just curious if I can write to it as well or only read.
Thanks!
I've had no trouble writing to my Kingston 16GB SDHC through a usb reader.
The only thing I would mention is that you'll need a custom kernel to access NTFS file systems. Also you should note that the kernel in question needs to have write enabled for the NTFS module. This had me stumped when installing a kernel without it enabled, and it only ever mounted it read-only. Of course, if you're using FAT then you don't need to worry about any of this.

I'm close to purchasing the Nexus 7 2013. The one thing holding me back is the USB drive issue. I want to be able to access the drive via the microUSB port and read&write to it like I would on a PC. You know, open an excel file, modify it, and close/save. All on the USB drive. Are you saying that can be done easily enough? I don't mind rooting, either. Don't want to but can if necessary.
Thanks. So from your post and reading a few other posts, unless you're rooted, you cannot write to NTFS (only read), but you can write to Fat systems. I really don't plan on having any files greater than 4GB so I believe Fat will work. Thanks!

I can use my WD USB HDD mounted via OTG and formatted NTFS using paragon app to mount (root required). This is tested with my SkyHigh kernel.
I don't know if device natively supports it with stock kernel, but should be able to mount at least fat formatted USB HDD without root and visible with Samsung file manager.
Not real sure about the battery, but would obviously use qite a bit. I haven't tested to quantify the "bit".

I have a pair of 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus drives that I use with my tablet. I formatted them as exFAT on a Windows computer and they automount on the tablet when connected. The tablet does not provide enough power to spin the drive. I use a USB Y cable to supply extra power from another power supply.

Could ANYONE please confirm that ?
If it's true it means that a fix is possible via system files.
THANK YOU A LOT

[Q] Does the 8.4 model support OTG read and write?

I found this tablet on sale at best buy and am wondering if I can use it to back up my files from a micro sd card to an external hard drive or flash drive.
I am hoping to do this without rooting the device.

Yes it does support otg.
Writing to external drive won't work without rooting the device because of the limitations in KitKat.

Well I have a 64 gig card and regularly transfer files back and forth using my otg cable or otg memory stick with no problems but in order to write you have to use the pre-installed file manager.

That wasn't the question what format is the HDD in like NTFS or FAT32?

Ok well you can try two apps one is to mount the drive and the other to read it both are on the play store.

I think it had something to do with debug settings in development options. I had installed Andromeda and left it checked. All working fine now. Thanks for your time :good:
