If you use search on the 2014 Note 10.1 forum you would find that there already was a topic about this. The digitiser according to Wacom should not suffer permanent damage through closeby magnets. A residu magnetic field in other internal components of the tablet could be disruptive. It is unclear if Samsung avoided magnetisable parts in their design of the 2014 Note 10.1.
If it damages the 8 it makes sense that it might damage the 10.1 as well

It was designed to turn on and off with a magnet book cover for a reason.
The note 8 was not designed for such an ability. Lastly, there is no hard evidence of the magnet actually causing damage. There are people who have had magnet book covers since the note 8 launch with out problems. There are people who have never had a magnet cover have problems, and a combination of the two.
So there is no solid evidence.
The official Samsung book-cover has magnets...I would say no to them damaging it. I've used my MoKo case with magnets for around 2 weeks with no problem.
I'd be very surprised if there were any permanent damage. In my humble experience the interference with the pen desists once the offending cases are removed.

The Samsung book cover uses a magnet in the cover but it's much weaker then the ones in the poetic slimline case which are pretty dam strong, I wasn't comfortable risking a $600 tab to find out if the $10 case would ruin the digitizer since I've voided the warranty already. I figured it's a sure bet that the official Samsung case is not going to harm the device it was designed for by Samsung so I ran out and grabbed one from BB, glad I did, $60 is worth the piece of mind.
I just found this topic after noticing this problem on my 10.1 2014. I've had a Poetic keyboard case on mine for over 4 months, and I can confirm that the problem disappears when the tablet is removed from the case.
Using the poetic slim case since 5 months without issues here.
We will add a fifth to that.

I just purchased a new Note 8 and looking for a slim case like the original cover or the poetic case on amazon.
But reading about the magnet got me concerned. Will a slim case with magnetic mess up the unit?
Can someone recommend a good case that will not harm the note? Something inexpensive hopefully. I do like the sleep/wake feature but concerned that it will destroy my note.
Thanks for your help.
I returned the OTG Samsung case and ordered Otterbox Defender. I had the OTG Samsung case for the 10.1 for about 6months without an issue and sold it to upgrade to 8.0 LTE. Although I didn't have any magnetic problems in those times, who knows if problems would start after.. like 1 year or 2 after the warranty ends. I didn't want to take that chance. Plus all the magnetic cases are cover cases which looks cool but when using it it's a hassle to flip the cover back each time I need to use it.
My recommendation: get the Otterbox Defender. It is expensive but way worth it. But to be honest, I got it half off original price on sale for back to school sale on NCIX.com. I doubt it is still going on though. Or the Poetic Revolution, I was going to buy that one and I kind of wish I did because it has a kickstand but it's only in black and I have a white tablet. It was same price also (on sale).

so far it seems that Samsung covers are safe - I recall only one reported incident here, and it was probably hw fault, not really related to case, also use those on both our devices at home with no problems whatsoever
custom cases are more risky - depending on model/producer, not sure about permanent damage, but improper magnets happen to impact digitizer performance and/or accuracy - there's been few threads on this in Accessories forum

I bought a generic slim book cover case from eBay. It had a magnet in the back which meant the pen didn't work at all on one region of the screen. No permanent damage as far as I know, though. Presumably Samsung's own book case doesn't have this problem, but it's a bit expensive.

I preordered this back in August and finally got it from the mail this week, the build quality of the case is OK, except there's a problem with its magnets. At certain standing positions, the magnets would interfere with the smart cover receptor and shut off the screen when I don't want it to do so. I contacted the seller and got a replacement today, which does the same thing as the original product. Well....for $5, can't complain much.
It looks nice and I don't use the stand much and been looking for a soft touch case. Does it ad a lot of bulk like some of the people complain about?

I have both Poetic and this Roocase.
The Roocase's front cover is thinner --> flimsy.
Roocase still has a magnet issue --> turns off tablet when folded back.
I think you should spend a few more $$ for the Poetic.
I have the poetic right now and hate it since it feels so cheap from the fake leather material they used. Really prefer the soft touch. Just ordered it will let you know how I like it lol.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I just received mine yesterday. Overall, the case feels extremely nice - especially the softback material. The cover is thin, but that's okay for me since it does not add bulk and it allows the cover to fold in many ways.
I've only noticed the magnets activate standby on the tablet when it is in one certain position (not folded behind). It's not something I am worried about because there's no reason for me to orient the tablet in such way.
It's an extremely thin case that's definitely worth $5 if you do not get one that has the magnet issues.
I have the LTE model.
I spent half an hour with a dremel tool to modify it to permit changing the SIM card without removing the tablet from the RooCase.
I am generally pleased with it, but I think the corner protection is substandard.
The corner protection does not go all the way up to the top of the tablet.
Regards
I figure as long as it sticks out more than the tablet around the edge it's nothing to worry about on a flat surface. And as was said the thin cover wouldn't be a problem since it doesn't add bulk and if your not too rough with it it won't be a problem lol. One question though is the magnet right on the edge of the cover? Amazon pics weren't great

Well just got mine today and the difference is night and day. It doesn't creak or squeel and it doesn't feel cheaper than dirt. Love this case

if you have issues with the magnets in the case turning your screen on and off in various positions, you can disable the magnet wake feature using Elemental kernel (assuming your rooted) or you can contact the seller and they will send you a free replacement ( supposedly tested by them to be working properly) I got my replacement a few days ago but I guess I've been to lazy to reflash the kernel and select the magnet wake option to ON and verify

I purchased this case when I had my Nexus 7 on order, It took three weeks to arrive. In the meantime I got the Poetic Slimline also. After receiving the rooCase, I immediately noticed the poor fit and rough edges on the case. I also noticed the same issues with the magnets as some of the other people. Bottom line I would not recommend this case at all as it does not work well and is of poor quality.
Try ands see if you can't get a replacement mine was fantastic and fits better than the poetic case.

Dang, that's really an extreme solution. People shouldn't have to mod their kernels just to adapt to a poorly designed accessory.
Its not really an issue since it doesn't stand like the regulate cases since its the oragami and works just fine like that.

I just received the Moko case and it has a magnet that turns our device on and off. But I've heard talks of the magnets ruining the digitizers.
I don't understand how this can happen if the Samsung covers have magnets in addition to our tablets having a setting to interact with magnets. Perhaps it depends on what the magnet is rated at?
Could anyone share or educate me on any risk I have using the Moko case that has a magnet?

Place the tablet upside-down? Ahh! I see now. You just blew my mind! So there's not supposed to be a magnet on the upper left corner? I feel a indentation there, and it would probably help hold the cover closed, but nothings there. Thanks for the help. As simple as flipping the tablet over is, I might not have realized it for days.

I don't have a magnet there either
I was afraid of this problem as well and I also just received the Moko case. The first thing I did once I got the case was remove the magnets using an exacto knife. There are 5 in total. There are 4 rectangular magnets where the case flap and the case touch (2 on the edge of the case flap and 2 on the edge of the case itself). I presume they are there for keeping the case closed. Then in the center of the case flap there is a round magnet which I assume is used for the actual wake/sleep feature.
I understand removing the magnets was a little extreme but I only plan to use this case until there is an otterbox defender case made available for it.

Aren't you guys acting a bit paranoid when even cutting the magnets out of the case. I yet have to find the fist discussion thread or post in which someone confirms permanent damage. And I did quite some extensive googling on the subject. So just post the sites/threads or stop scaring each other.

Did you not read the 4th post of people showing the note 8.0 with dead spots where they can't write?
I had the note 8.0 though and from my memory since it didn't have options and settings to utilize a magnetic cover I think that is the reason why some note 8.0 are getting messed up.
I don't know what will happen but that's why I have a free 2 year warranty so I don't really care.

Interesting read.
Wacom says no permanent damage is caused by magnets, but it could very well be that parts of your device can be magnetized and with that the problem would be (at least) somewhat permanent.

If I read that post in the referenced thread right - those "dead spots" were not a demonstration of permanent damage. The poster mentions placing the screen next to the magnets in the folio to achieve that effect.

Could you post pictures of where those magnets are located? I'm going to cut mine out as well. Zenus will start shipping at the end of November so I'd rather play it safe and just get rid of the magnets.
Update. I got out the magnets. The circular magnet was partially covered by the card flap for anyone else interested.
I just recently bought the poetic slimline case and as much as I love it, the magnetic field created by the magnets in the case is 500ut which the Android Sensor Box app is showing anything over 150ut is bad . Will this cause long term effects on the hardware with that strong of a field? I have no idea about any of this other than strong magnets are bad on any electronics. I just want to know if anyone who has used this case for a while if they have noticed any problems with their device? Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Edit: I did a little digging and i found some good stuff. First off a field of 500uT or 0.0005T is about the strength of an ordinary fridge magnet. Tech these days need to be within about 1.25T or 1350000uT (the strength of a magnet inside of an HDD) for any damage to occur. So I guess we can rest assured that the only things these magnets will do is confuse the sensor. Im sure no magnets in any case are that strong so I wouldn't worry about it anymore. Thanks everyone for the help!
I guess no one has had any issues then? Thanks for everything

I have been wondering this aswell.
If the magnetic fields created by the magnets would cause screen issues.
I have an Asus VersaSleeve for my Nexus and it has magnets...
I am noticing screen sensitivity issues when my tablet is laying flat and resting on the folded up cover... Hmm... Guess I'll take it off and if they go away it's the magnets.
If I hold the tablet in my hand there are no issues even with the cover on

The magnet shouldn't cause any problems.
Jfriend, the problem you ate experiencing is a problem with the touchscreen itself. There's a thread on it somewhere around here.
I'm using one of those Poetic cases with no issues.
The Google Play Store is also selling their Folio cases for the Nexus 7
with the Wake / Sleep feature.
They probably wouldn't be selling it if they thought the magnets would be a problem.

I would agree with you but with the 2013 nexus they moved it to the lower left side of the device. Its on the opposite side of the battery. The magnet inside the device doesn't even get picked up by the sensor so its placed in a spot where it wont do any harm. The issue I'm talking about are the 2 magnets that hold the case shut. I dont see any on the official folio. They are strong magnets and they work well for their purpose. Im just curious what kind of effects this has on the device long term. I guess ill find out eventually if its harmful lol.
I've also been using a pouch with a strong magnetic closure on my cellphones for the past few years. Never had any problems.

I've been experiencing exactly the same thing. I also have a case with magnetic parts on it, it's a blue-tooth keyboard case and there are 4 small magnets that hold the keyboard in place and 1 on the back that hold the stand in place.
When I have the tablet flat or on the stand I quite often have problems with touchscreen response, however if i pick the tablet up and hold it vertically it's fine. I am as yet undecided if it is the case or the tablet itself. I have heard of screen issues with the N7. but primarily the issues seem to be multitouch and ghost touch related.
I did have a case for my Galaxy Note that has a strong magnetic clasp and that did effect the screen, once I dumped the case for a non magnetic one it was fine.
It stands to reason that magnetic fields will effect electronic devices given their operation and the fact that any electrical current creates a magnetic field and two opposing fields... well we've all done the reverse poles trick with magnets haven't we.
Just got a Nexus 7 and a Poetic Slimline case for Christmas.
I don't know about long term issues, but I do know it does affect the functionality of some apps. SkEye is nearly unusable with the case on.
Are there any risks attached to using covers with magnets in them?
Just bought a cheap knock of of the origami case , and noticed two small but powerful magnets. Haven't noticed anything yet ( had it a few days) pen accuracy is still great.
On the other hand I'd rather not find out in a few days that I have managed to do permanent damage to the note's digitizer or something to that effect?
Heard stories regarding other cases with magnets and potential long term risks.
Anyone?

Even the official Samsung case has strong magnets. I've been reading the forums since December and nobody has reported long term damage as a result of a cheap case. If yours has an issue, you'll notice it fairly soon (screen refusing to sleep, auto brightness issues, areas of the screen that are difficult to write on etc.) First thing to try when something goes wonky is remove the case and see if it makes a difference. If you don't notice anything amiss, pat yourself on the back for finding a cheap case that works just as well as an expensive one.

There is no risk.
Tablets are designed to work with magnet covers.
I have an orginal samsung cover, and have used it for 6 months now with no problems
Knock off Original Book cover.
I have this knock off of the original book cover ($5!), The thing is it has eight magnets! Four on the lid and Four on the bacck so it can become a stand.
It is harmful or not? Shall I use it? It does have good quality.
Link to where you bought it?
As for mine, been using it for a few weeks with , at least as far as I can see, no issues
