"Not Found" error message when attempting to push file via ADB

I'm using Cyanogen Mod 6, the most recent nightly build. I want to push the Sense UI notification sounds to the android notifications folder. I attempted to do this via terminal emulator via the following:

$ adb push /sdcard/HTC_Audio_Files/notifications/Ascend.mp3 /system/media/audio/notifications.mp3
When I did that, I get a "not found" error. I was thinking I didn't have permissions, so I did:

$ su
# adb push /sdcard/HTC_Audio_Files/notifications/Ascend.mp3 /system/media/audio/notifications.mp3
I got the same error.
Then, I decided to copy the files I wanted to push into the tools folder on my computer, in the Android SDK. I did the adb devices command, and I saw my device listed. I did the same code as above, and still get the "Not Found" error. I'm sure it's something very simple that I'm missing. I made sure the directories are correct, even making sure everything was case-sensitive.

You're entering the wrong command(s).
Place your notification sound into your AndroidSDK\tools folder, then run:
Code:
adb push name-of-soundbite.mp3 /system/media/audio/notifications/
This will place a .mp3 called "name-of-soundbite" into your notifications folder. You then need to reboot your phone in order for it to work.

Thanks for the help. I was still having the "not found" error, after your instructions. I figured it out, though. I had to run the "adb remount" command, to make the system partition writable. After I was finished, I ran the remount command again, to make it read only.
So, for anyone who has this error later here's the code I used (I did not need to go into the adb shell to do this):

adb push name-of-soundbyte.mp3 /system/media/audio/notifications/
adb remount

It's fine. I'm a newb/noob, so my adb skills are almost non-existant, but I when I saw the error about the system partition being readonly, that triggered something I read in the adb wiki. I found the remount code there, which paved the way for my success.

[MOD] 3-Click QuickTempRoot TerminalMOD :/

Alright all,
I know there's another thread about "easier" method, but this is easiest for me. 3-Clicks after installation.
I was really tired of typing the same crap over and over after rebooting just to get my temproot back to do more testing/playing.
So I redeveloped this to be quicker/easier upon reboot. Mainly I altered the Term app to be have a scripted start-up on the 1st 3 launches.
I also updated the su/Superuser combo with ChainDD's latest stuff.
Here's how it works, after it's installed.

Now on each reboot, it will be simply 3-clicks (running terminal app 3 times).
Finally ... any executable script placed in /data/local/tmp will be in the path of the new terminal mod. This makes running other scripts very easy.
Installation
Download the attached QuickTempRooter.zip and place it in a directory and unpack it.
Turn on USB debugging and install through adb ...
Here's the adb installation snippet ...

adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage
adb push root /data/local/tmp/root

adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/rage
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/root
adb shell 'pm uninstall com.android.term'
adb install Term.apk
Has made my life wayyy easier when playing with this phone while we wait for the real-deal!!!

NOTES
If you get a permission denied on the ''adb shell 'pm uninstall com.android.term' '' ... this is normal if you don't have a terminal already installed or have an alternate terminal app (using a namespace other than com.android.term.
If you have another Terminal App installed, you may want to uninstall it first, to avoid confusion.
Also, you may need to reboot after the initial installation for it to work properly!

If you didn't already have a terminal app installed that error is normal. Also you may need to reboot once after the initial installation for it to work properly.

good to see you on this side.... i have terminal app installed rebooted but still get this denied when running adb shell 'pm uninstall com.android.term
Edit: fixed it uninstalled the Android Terminal E,ulator and just ran the setup now have root thanks

I've searched XDA, Youtube, and web to ADB and SDK. I've downloaded it and it's installed. The only thing I don't get is when you said to

You mean place the extracted files into the sd card correct? That's why the command is "adb push su /sdcard/su".

No, he means on your PC. You are running adb to push files contained in the zip to your phone.

If you have better terminal, you can also add the rage and root to specific keys.

Unplug then plug ur phone back in then try again also make sure u are in usb debug mode

Quick question, ok I was able to get root for a few mins, then it went away I guess I have to have the terminal always open or ignore so my taskiller doesnt terminated it?

Don't use task killers. (IMHO)
But I tend to have to reboot every once in a while to keep root in tacked within terminal but all my apps seem to stay with su permissions until reboot (or sometimes 12 hours)

how to get root shell after inputting "adb shell"?

Hello everyone!!!
I want to know if there is a way to get a root shell after obtaining shell prompt using "adb shell".
I tried pushing some files, moving directories into "/data" and type "ls" but linux always gave me a "Permissioin denied" error.
What I want to do is to run a console program which is compiled by ARM compiler in a console mode. So I need to get an access to run a program in console mode of HTC Desire HD.
If you let me know, I will very very appreciate your help.

It will give you root shell if you have a rooted phone.

Um.. I already installed VISIONary. So I guess the phone I got is a rooted one.
Actually I'm a kind of outsiders about smart-phones~~!
So do I need to install some apps to make a rooted phone?
Just installing VISIONary doesn't seem enough.. right?

Visionary temproot or permroot is enough, just type "su" in adb shell.

Despite that I installed VISIONary, run permroot and reboot my phone, su doesn't give root shell.
I don't know why

do you know what root shell is? when you type su if a # appears on the next line ur logged into root

[Q] How do I use adb in a linux terminal?

Hello all,
I want to know how to use adb.
It seems pretty easy but I just can't get it to work. I'm using Ubuntu... I've already installed the android sdk.
So where do I go from here.
## WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS THIS: ##
I want to (among other things) push a new boot animation to my phone from my Ubuntu laptop...
____Of course I could flash it but I want to learn how to push____
I have the "bootanimation.zip" on the root of my SD card.
NOW WHAT? In terminal?

First, put bootanimation.zip in the same directory as ADB
su
cd <enter directory with ADB here>
./adb remount
./adb push ./bootanimation.zip /system/media
And you should have your new boot animation.

Ok, after I enter "su" it asks for my pass and then says "su: Authentication Failure"
Is there another way like with sudo perhaps?

Ok, I did "sudo su" to become root... I think..
Then did "./adb remount" and it spit out "error: insufficient permissions for device"
Then i did "./adb devices" and it said "???????????? no permissions"
Any Ideas?
My EVO is connected via usb and I have usb debugging on and USB storage ON.

when you do the "su" command, you will need to allow superuser permission on your phone

"sudo su" first in ubuntu

in fact, ive pushed many files to my phone using ubuntu without running as root. if you are new to linux though, be advised the characters will not show as you enter your password, but dont worry, they're there... oh and what he said, you need to be rooted and make sure you can gain root access on the phone, type "./adb shell" and you should see a # sign; meaning you have root. if you see a $ sign you do not have root access. also you can type "./adb devices" to see if you device is 'online' with your computer

[HeLP] USB debugging not working

Hi, i install cannot turn on debbuging usb mode in my Defy 2.2 froyo movistar argentina.
Does anyone have any idea why? i turn on but when connecting to the PC no (!) icon shows.

btw, i belive is a device problem because before i install froyo work fine. And my drivers worked fine till i install froyo

Can you post the link/thread from where you downloaded the froyo ROM. Also ignore the ! icon, just check in ADB if debugging is working or not. Enable USB debugging in Settings and after plugging in the USB select "Charge Only" mode.
Open adb and type "adb devices"
if it shows one device, then you're all good.
PS: make sure you have Moto Driver v4.9 or above.

There's nothing wrong with USB debugging or your cell. It's just that you're using the wrong command syntax.
once you type "adb shell" you DO NOT have to type adb before every next command because you're already inside adb prompt.
Just write "push Xyz.apk /sdcard/Xyz.apk"
or
write this command when inside windows prompt , i.e when not inside "adb shell"
C:\>adb push xyz.apk /sdcard/xyz.apk
(notice it's C prompt)
Skip writing 'adb' before each command once you are inside adb shell
also, are you trying to root your Defy?
