Looking for a desktop dashboard - Nexus 7 (2013) Themes and Apps

Looking for an app that I can leave open on my N7 when its on my desk that does a good job of showing me lots of info and refreshing at regular intervals.
Anyone have any experience with Chamelon Launcher? I see mixed review but looking to see if anyone has anything else to recommend.
Thanks!

I don't know if it will be what you want, but what I do is go to Settings | Display and set Daydream to Currents. When you set it there are some tabs up top and one of them says "When to daydream". I pick "either" but you can pick when docked or when charging.
If you have Currents set up to do news you care about, it works well.

Well Currents can read any RSS feed. So I would think you could set it up to weather, social media, etc. as long as you could pull an RSS for it. Now, granted, things that are formatted for Currents look better....

Dashclock widget. It comes with plugins which support a lot of apps you probably already have, supports daydream mode and looks good.

Replace "Google Mail" Application

Is this at all possible? I still want to have my contacts, etc updated but I feel the interface is somewhat primitive!
Replace with what?
An alternative ...
K9 Mail maybe or better ...
You can't "replace" it you just start using something else.
Are there even Amy advantages to using the gmail app?
Any suggestions on alternatives? K9 Any good?
Ah gmail will be the best gmail tool you will find on the android lol. You don't mean Email tool? Do you use Gmail??
Yeah I maent the GMail application (it refers to itself as "Google Mail"). I'll just have to bear with it then till they upgrade it . I am though over the moon with the device the text input ROCKS! I do have a list of applications I need suggestions on though ... I'm used to the following on Windows Phoen so I need an Android variation ...
G-Alarm - A Comprehensive alarm application
G-Profile - easily change my profiles from night, work, home, etc, this would be great as a widget
Task Facade - A general task manager that will show all my running applications and let me close/switch
Wake On Text/Email/etc - As it says ... and stay awake until message has been read!
Lock Without using Power button - easy ...
That's about it for now

I know what you mean about the GMail app, if it's the same as in Android 1.6.. Ugly, flat and boring interface. Some customisation or nice animation wouldn't go amiss. I think the problem is that the Android team at Google don't really view the product UI as a whole, but instead as a load of separate modules that they can just chuck together. No time to make the GMail app look nicer for 2.1? No worries, just stick it out as it is. Media player still the worst/most basic there is? We'll worry about it another time, just stick it in, as is.
Depending on what you've come from, Android can seem amazing, or quite basic in it's vanilla form. I realise the intention is for manufacturers to add their own custom touches to the OS, like HTC have with Sense, and Motorola have with MOTOBlur. But really I think Google should be applying a bit more spit and polish to it's own core apps - the ones that come installed on all/most Android phones, and won't be messed with by handset manufacturers.
By this I mean GMail, Maps, Market, Browser, Gallery etc. Some of these are pretty good efforts (Browser), while others leave a lot to be desired compared to those found on other types of (non-Android) handsets.
I realise that they have to code for the lowest common denominator (low-end handsets) and not every handset can have a 1ghz Snapdragon in it, but I also feel that they are failing Android a little bit, by not ensuring the the latest hardware is taken advantage of in it's latest OS.
How hard would it be to tart up the GMail interface a little bit, while still keeping the same functionality? Not hard.
I know Android is about power and flexibility - don't like the Google way, then design or just install some other developers app instead. And that's great, but I really think there's something to be said for making sure your core experience is great, not just ok.
Disclaimer: I am basing this opinion on my experiences of Android 1.1, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 (2.0 admittedly is limited, since I do not own my own phone with Eclair yet, just flashed custom ROMs).
Feel free to flame away - I may flame myself when my Desire turns up by 1pm today, and I realise I'm tallking a load of BS when I'm presented the all singing, all dancing, beautifully animated new 2.1 apps from Google! But I doubt it...
BTW, don't get me wrong - I love Android, and I would not consider buying any other type of phone!
Why use the gmail application? I'm using the native email application and it works fine with gmail, lets me move all my mail to archive etc, receives it when its received (through push i think) and there is no reason why i would wantto use the local gmail application. In fact. It hasnt even been loaded up. lol
So I don't actually "have" to use th GMail application? I can just add the GMail account on Exchange/ActiveSync on the mail application? Sounds like a good idea! What are the disadvantages?
Any advice on the other applications I wanted?

Go in the Gmail application, settings, disable notifications.
You've pretty much turned off the Gmail Applcation then. Start using the other mail application or download one off the marketl.
I will give you some suggestions for your apps when I have time.

THANKS! I was kind of pissed when I notced you couldn't send bbc emails with GMail app ... madness ...
Is there a way to have a Gmail, Google Apps and Exchange all on the same device? Also does the mail app use IMAP idle I don't want to drain the battery by checking mail every minute ...
What uses more battery, gmail app or using HTC Mail to check for messages every half an hour?
Likely mail as GMail is push.

My bad ...
Still, I have a list of applications that I need asap .
So far, I've not found anything that even comes close to Galarm in terms of quality. I'm using Gentle Alarm though, which is really good compared to most other alarm apps for android.
Check out a program called Locale. That's meant to be really good for profiles and even does it location based
EDIT: Don't use a task manager, it's not good for your phone! There's an article that was posted up on here about the way android works, you don't need to kill tasks and reboot, etc. like you did with WinMo.

[Q] Can anyone recomend a good RSS reader?

Hi,
I've tried a number of them so far and none of them are what I want:
gReader for whatever reason deletes a post as soon as you've read it return to the list of articles it didn't do that until this version and I can't figure out how to turn that off, there's no OPML import or export and it seems to not find a single URL I feed it for any new valid feed.
I've tried others but so far none has done what I need it to do, just download feeds, and images, if associated, have links showing, be customizable in that it can be organized into folders for feeds, not take over the entire device while sycing as gReader now all of a sudden does. it's become a huge CPU hog while syncing.
Any and all suggestiosn would be most appreciated.
NewsRob is what I've been using since I got my first Android phone, sounds like it should do what you're looking for and it can sync with Google Reader as well.

I have looked extensively for a good rss reader. I found Newsroom to be the best out of all of them. Personal opinion, but give it a try. Its functional, pretty, and works well.

I appreciate the recommendation, only issue with Newsroom is that it doesn't have gReader support. there is a four-month tech support thread that has the devs at the trileet company saying because the back end of Newsroomis proprietary and google reader isn't, that they would lose major functionality.
If they can't support google feeds then it's just not worth it.
I think gReader works great. I was one of the people who pushed for 2 way syncing and he made it happen. As for the article disappearing after you read it and press back, it's been like that for a while. If you want to save it, mark it as unread or star it. This is exactly the same way it works in Google Reader. I add or subtract rss feeds maybe once a year so I don't care how well gReader does it. I can just wait till I get to a real computer and do it there.
I use Greed (Lite) - free in the market. It integrates nicely with google reader, has the ability to follow links, and filter read/unread. Also has widgets that can be placed on your homescreens. No importing/exporting required... just provide your google account info and it syncs all of your feeds/folders.
Its worth a try... doesnt cost anything
Been using FeedR. It does cost some money, but its a very good reader with Google Reader support. Works fast, and looks great.

I currently use gReader. The problem you're describing about articles disappearing is that the app is set on default too only show new articles. The circle icon toggles between showing new articlesand showing all articles. Just toggle that and it will give you back your read articles. The check mark icon is to mark all articles as read. After I'm done skipping through the articles I don't want too read, I mark off all the remaining articles as read so it doesn't show up anymore

Oh, and seeing as I don't have a WP7 device (yet), what are the current Facebook frustrations so I know where to attack?
The one issue with the current Microsoft supplied Facebook app is that when you click on a youtube video is sends you to the regular youtube page and not the mobile version...so without flash it won't work. The only other thing would be a live tile that shows number of new notifications.

MS could of made it open an installed Youtube App as they have native code access. Not sure there are API's for this to a Marketplace Developer. Just a thought anyway, I could be wrong.
As for the Live tile, I would love to see a double wide live tile with more than just a number of notifications. I'd love to see more app actually have a true live tile with some of the notification text in the tile. Is this possible with the new Mango API's for a Marketplace Developer though?

I believe double-wide live tiles are still not available to 3rd parties, but certainly much more informational live tiles are available with the use of the back and front of the tile now.

Getting back to this app, while its nice to see someone trying to get a better Facebook app up and running, I hope that it doesn't end up looking like the Android or iOS Facebook app (as pictured in the screenshot).
Metro is a very capable design ethic, and the general design of Windows Phone 7 and it's apps lend themselves very well to presenting information in both an organized and beautiful fashion. Please make sure to take advantage of that. That being said, I of course only have this one screenshot to judge off of, so don't shoot me. XD
I agree with prjkthack, stay with the Metro UI look. The picture above does not look good for a WP7 app.
Things missing in the current Facebook app...
Can't see who liked status-update/picture, (you can see a few in notification area but not when looking at the actual update/picture)
Can't like Comments to updates/pictures
Annoying...
When looking at a picture you have to press comment button to see/add comments (it switches to a comment view where you don't see the picture anymore), why not show comments directly below the picture?
Everything just loads so slow
Does the current Facebook app from Microsoft have the Places or Check-In feature?
Honestly, since I put Mango on my phone, there's no need for a dedicated Facebook app. Notifications are on the "Me" tile, Status Updates in the People's Hub, and chat is in the Messaging hub...
Well the most annoying thing is not having a seperate fb messaging client.
And i think its better for you not wasting your time on doing a full fb app, but rather make a messaging only app which is quick with push, so people can actually use is since this is missing from the os integration.
However with Mango we can probably pin the fb inbox to our startscreen so this will cancel out the need for a facebook messenger client. And deep linking will add the desired speed to it.
Good luck anyway thank you for the effort, i hope it will come out nice.

Soooo true ... I use m.facebook.com ..
Between the Mango integration and the FB app, we have 90% of what we need covered. I'm not sure its worth the effort to create a new FB app honestly.
One of my biggest annoyances with the Microsoft Facebook app and alot of the apps that have been released is there smoothness and scrolling speed. We have this wonderful smooth and efficient operating system which is plagued by i suppose poorly coded apps that are trying to bite of more then they can chew.
The Facebook as is very sluggish to Navigate which really annoys the **** out of me. Another problem i have noticed is with the tile notifications, when you have a notification it displays on the tile as a number then you click on the facebook and and navigate to notifications, click on the notifications then exit and the counter has not updated. I disabled the push notifications and it still has a stupid number. When you open the app it should assume you have read all the notifications like on fb when click on the notifications button. So if you can manage to fix the notifications and the scrolling speed id be a very happy man.

What about Facebook Mail/Messages (not chat, the other ones)?
There is still enough feature disparity to warrant the need of a real App.
Also, does the new "integration" update in the background? For Twitter especially, since the lack of background updates would make that useless for me.
Thank you for all of your feedback!

I actually don't have much experience with WP7 and the Metro UI (other than the emulator). I will be upgrading my WinMo 6.5 to WP7 once my contract runs up, and so hopefully by then I will have more knowledge of what metro looks/feels like.
One thought I had was instead of making the 3x3 grid of pictures, making a 2xN set of Live Tiles for each of the different areas. Then do a pivot for "Pinned" friends, etc. Thoughts?

Hmmmm.... I'm curious about this. I would much rather spend my time developing something useful rather than copying integrated features.
Now, I know that on the HD2, HTC added a "Facebook Tab" that did basic stuff, but clicking into any of the different messages launched the m.facebook.com. Is this the same as with Mango?
Also, I know that some people like a consolidated feel when it comes to things like facebook. The integrated features sound great in terms of "Glance and Go", but how are they in regards to general Facebook Browsing? Do you get the full Facebook experience?
I would really like some more information about these comments. If there is no need for a dedicated app, then I won't make it.
Also, I know that Facebook limits what 3rd party devs can do, where as 1st party apps (Like the iOS and Android app) don't have those limits. Examples of this are adding places, sending messages to Inbox, Poking, etc (these CANNOT be done on 3rd party apps!) If the integrated app can do all of those, then there might not be any need to have a limited stand-alone app.
Any feedback about this would be excellent!

Mail/Messages cannot be sent by 3rd party apps... It is a terrible terrible thing I know. They had enabled it in 2009, but it got abused so they took it away. I've seen apps that work around the limitation, but I haven't found out how.
As for background apps, there is support for background threading in Mango so that should be possible!
Thank you again for all the feedback!

That makes sense, sounds like a good place to start.
So the "home" pivot would feature Facebook's main features (like feeds, photos, etc.), and then a "favorites" pivot would be custom pinned features like friends, groups, etc.?
Makes sense. Sounds good.

I wouldn't personally use it, the FB App itself and Mango has all I need. But competition is good and it'll be nice having more than 1 facebook app in the market.

Best New Launcher to Check out!

So I have found a new launcher that has great potential. Kind of reminds me of Wisbar Desktop from my WM days as you can put items anywhere on the screen and they are not locked into a grid like every other launcher. Besides swiping your pages side to side, you can also scroll down on each page like WP7.
Has lots customizations and the developer is extremely responses. Received a email back from him within 15 minutes after contacting him. Still has some bugs and he is aware of them and is constantly working on it.
I am running my screen at 720p and I totally recommend that as you can get lots on your screen!
It is free as well!

because its a launcher/app. If you were to set a contacts icon on the screen for direct dial or something like that, you would not be able to make a call because you didn't want that permission.
I'm pretty sure every launcher needs that permission.
I can't believe I didn't think of that. I don't add contact shortcuts, but it does make sense. I think I'll go download it now.

The developer is aware of the issues and is currently working on fixing them. I run into problems editing pages after I add a lot of items on the homepage.
Totally agree this can be the best launcher to date with as little more work.
If you haven't tried yet, drag items to the bottom of the screen as fat as can go and you will see you can then scroll the page down. There are probably so many cool things to do in the launcher. If anyone figures some tricks out, post it up!

Another cool trick I just noticed for lining up apps and widgets on the screen...
Hold down whatever you want to move. Then let your finger off of it to bring up the little menu that says edit, etc. Then either click the back button or touch somewhere else on the screen and it will leave your item highlighted. In cse you didn't know, at this point you can re-size your widget but if you move the whole widget around you will see red lines show up when it is lined up with other items near it making it simple to know where you are placing it.
It is kind of hard to explain but try and and you will understand what I am talking about....
Its pretty cool and has A LOT of potential.
pretty cool but could've been better

Some Ideas for Google Now

Google is probably holding back with Google Now, not wanting to scare people away by releasing too many features too soon that show just how much it knows about us. Here are my ideas:
1. Send to Now – As you browse the web or read a book, you could highlight words or people’s names to Google Now so it loads up information about them for you to read through later.
2. Photos – when you take a photo of a landmark, Google Now could load a card with information about the landmark. I think Google Goggles already does this but now would be a better platform.
3. People – when you take or scan a photo of a person or their business card, Google Now could load up a card in the background with their LinkedIn or G+ profile.
4. Things – scan a barcode or object and Now loads up information (price, retailers etc) about it. Again, just like Goggles but better.
5. Rules – Google could let us write rules to trigger cards. For example, I could ask Now to pop up a card reminding me to take my groceries from the fridge in my office when I start my car (connect to my car’s Bluetooth) at work on a Friday evening. I already kind of do this with an app called Automate It by the way – it’s similar to Tasker.
6. Networking – Google Now could load profile cards of people nearby who have opted in to the networking feature.
7. Second Screen – Google Now when prompted could listen to what’s playing on your TV and offer more information about the programme. It could even offer links to purchase products advertised on TV or radio.
8. Related Articles – As you browse the web, Google Now could build up a list in the background of other articles related to those you have read and you could later review the list at your leisure - rating, reading and/or discarding the suggestions as you see fit.
9. Conversations - This one is a little scarier than the others and I’m not sure I would opt in to it myself, but Google Now could listen in on your phone and email conversations and provide related information – links to products you discussed or articles about concepts or news mentioned. As I say, I think I’d pass on this one.
10. Custom Cards – Google could let retailers or even websites build custom cards that are loaded when you check-in to their stores or visit their websites. These cards could include special offers and promotions, best-selling items etc. I imagine Google could even charge businesses for such a service if it were so inclined.
In all of this it would be important that they are opt in only – opt out wouldn’t be good enough. Also, Google Now should always remain non-intrusive but perhaps one should be allowed to set which cards should pop up as notifications, cause the phone to vibrate or simply load in the background. I might want a reminder to trigger a notification by the way but for others I may be happy to ignore or review at my convenience. By the way, I haven’t seen or used Google Now yet so if I’ve completely misunderstood how it works or could work, this is my excuse.
Oh and I apologise in advance if this is not the right forum – I couldn’t immediately find a better one and I see others have posted about Google Now here too, I guess since the G Nex is one of only two devices with it on at the moment.
What are your ideas for Google Now?
How about more integration with GAPPS? (I'm looking at you Calendar!)

Isn't Calendar already integrated? I see reminders for my calendar entries in Now. Don't know about setting events via Now though, since it isn't completely functional in German / other languages than US english.
On topic, OP has some great ideas! Hope to see some of the less scary integrated
Really? I thought reminders were only within the alarm app... I will have to double check...

I see a reminder for this evening right now, it's definitely integrated
there was a interview with matias, and he confirmed that there is calendar feature, only reading from it.
there isn't any feature to create a calendar entry from NOW. but he emphasise that the API exist and all down to developers.
maybe hinting that its possible for 3rd party developer to write some custom card that can be installed?
I would love to be able to teach Google Now how to pronounce my name, placenames in my area etc. so that dictation works better.
Having said that, I find the accuracy of the dictation to be outstanding for most other things. I love GN!
There are so many possiblilities to this feature. I can't wait to see how it evolves over time. I actually use it quite a bit more than I thought I would. It makes a simple task so much easier, such as setting an alarm! Being able to set calendar appointments would be amazing though!

I think they're referring to that you can't use now to create a calendar event. If you want it to remind you of something, it can only set an alarm for you.
Music, it should tell you when an artist you like has a new single or album coming out, and if they are going to be playing a show withing X miles of your location. Or have just announced a tour etc.
Media, it should tell you when a new movie or video game is being released and give ratings for it and such.
I like idea number one, maybe adding in a dictionary for certain words, although that may be part of what your talking about.
That's one of the nice things I like about reading books on my Ipad. You can highlight a word in a book you're reading and, it will define the word.

Well for the concert notification, I stumbled upon an app called song kick. Which will scrap your Google music and pandora ( maybe something else too) and email you when an artist you liked or own content from is touring near you.

It should show a card every monday, wednesday, friday morning when I first unlock my device with the day's XKCD comic and the mousover text.
Keeping tabs on movie releasedates would be nice too. Google "The dark knight rises" and on the release day it shows up on a card with the theatre times for your cities movie theatres.
Connect with (Google) TV to give you a tvguide card when your watching tv.
Shows a card with directions to the nearest florists on your anniversary

Excellent idea. The more media related info the better imo.
One more feature I'd like to see is the ability to send a time or location based reminder to someone else. The person can then choose to accept the reminder or not. I suspect Apple will do this soon if they haven't already. The reminder could then appear in Google Now along with any notes the sender included.

Integration with Tripit.
Integrate with Tripit directly to send reminders of all the little tripit events you have, check-in, check-out, flights, etc.
I want there to be an actual notes app for which Google Now can create a note and save it.
