To start, I have done some digging around, but have not found any help.
My s 3 has become really sluggish, although the task manager shows no abnormal ram usage. I can not install apps from the play store, i CAN download them however. AVAST will not advance on it's scans, it stalls at 5%. The red LED light when charging will not appear as well. and like i mentioned earlier, the phone overall has been acting strange.
I did root my phone, but flashed it back to stock about 7 months ago and no problems have happened until this one.
This issue has affected me before, while rooted, and a factory reset solved it, but i am wondering if there is an alternate way to fix.
Can anyone offer some insight?
EDIT: The problem seems to come and go, sometimes the led will light up and i will be able to install apps, and then the problem will come back.
sometimes a funky sd-card will cause really strange problems.
You might try to backup your internal storage and sd-card files to a pc, format the internal storage and sd-card and copy your data back.

i removed the external sd-card, wiped the system cache, un-installed all apps that i didn't use regularly and that seems to have solved it. Thanks for the pointer!

I've got an issue i'm hoping you guys can help me with.
I've got a stock froyo 2.2 rooted device.
just recently i've been having issues with my apps.
I back up my SD often so i formatted it and reloaded the data.
This helped until the first reboot then i started having issues again.
The device would show internal apps only, sometimes taking up to ten minutes to load the storage apps.
In the market i cannot download/install apps, even the ones on internal
(sometimes taking several minutes to install)
I've attempted to unmount the SD card but it hangs.
t it hangs when i try to use apps2sd, using my phone as a disk drive, checking disk usuage on both internal and storage, etc.
But i have full access when i use file managers and also when i take the card out of my phone and plug it into my computer. I see everything and everything works.
i have also noticed that it reports the internal memory wrong, sometimes it'll be 50mb's sometimes 130 mb's. All within hours of not doing anything.
i made a nand backup so i'm doing that now, maybe i forgot to clear cache or something last time?
any ideas would surely help, in all honesty it sounds like my internal drive is failing and i hope thats not the case.
thank you
Just recently started running into problems with my media storage clearing data on its own. One minute everythings fine the next all my music is missing and I have to reboot the phone to get it to rescan the sdcard to get my music back. Has done this on stock sense as well as CM 7.1 so its not a specific ROM issue. Its getting annoying as it happens at least once a day and the rescan takes a long time to complete as I have a ton of music. Starting to wonder if its my sdcard going bad? Its a Sandisk 32GB that I've had for over a year with no problems, have the exact same card in my tablet with no problems. I see there is a fix for teh same problem on emmc storage but not sure if this is the same thing happening here.

does it happen ever day at the same time? or is it random just once a day. if its a set time then i would say its an app. if its random then the card might be going bad.
i have a suggestion. place the card in a reader on a pc and copy everything off of it. do a full format now just a quick format. place everything back on the card and see if it helps.

No its random times. I thought about re-formatting the sdcard but I'm at work and don't have my usb cable with me. I will try that tonight.
I've had CM7.1 installed for about 2 months and was having other issues with it. When this started 2 days ago I decided to restore a Sense backup to see if it would fix it but the same thing started happening after about 6 hours.
Okay it just did it again. HTC Music Player says no music found and when I open the Gallery there are no pictures. Right now it shows only 268 KB of data so its been cleared. Thing is I can access the sdcard using ES File Explorer and can play music with any of the players, HTC, Mixing, ES File Explorer Player, through it.
Tonight I'm going to reformat the sdcard and do a factory reset on the phone. Maybe even just down load the RUU and start over. Something is definetly corrupted.
yeah it might mean your sd card is going out. i would try the format thing first. then maybe a full wipe of the phone and a fresh install of a rom.

I reformatted the sdcard 3 times and then did an extensive wipe of the phone and reinstalled wildstangs stock 4.08 ROM and over night the media storage deleteed its data again. I not totally sure its the sdcard thats the problem and I'm going to try the fix posted for the same problem for the emmc storage and see if that works.
Edit: after reading the emmc thread again there is no fix person who posted it said teh problem came back after 2 days.
I've been using CM10 and now 10.1 for a while now. I like it alot but im having a little issue...
I've searched XDA and found a couple of mention of this issue but no workaround or more info than the usual "yes, i'm also having this issue".
When i connect my phone to the computer, the SD card and internal storage are inverted, yet they report proper sizes.
I wouldnt mind if it was only a cosmetic issue, however i'm having issues copying files on my internal memory because my SD Card is full...
For exemple... when i plug my phone i see "SD Card" with 346mb free out of 59.4gb (using a 64gb sdcard) and i see Internal memory as 8.41gb free out of 12gb. If i want to copy a file that is bigger than 350mb on my internal memory, i have to go into "SD Card" and copy it there and then it fails to copy saying there isnt enough free space.
So yeah, while the cosmetic inversion doesnt bother me, the fact that it's checking for the required free-space in the wrong place before copying is a bit annoying.
I'm using my SD Card for music storage, i like to keep things separated and well sorted... so right now, my solution is to delete enough stuff on my SD Card so that it has more free-space than the files i want to copy on my internal storage
Any workaround other than that?

I'm not sure if there's a workaround but you could try mounting through recovery?
It sounds like a ROM problem, did you clean flash CM10.1?

I did do a clean flash. Over the holidays, i played around with AOKP and CM10.1 as i had issues getting my Wifi to work on CM10.1 and AOKP was working fine (ended up breaking in AOKP after the holidays too, had to change my router's setting from simple WPA to WPA2, but thats another story). So while playing around, i ended up wipping the phone a few times.
Sadly, i don't remember if the issue was also present in AOKP or if it was just CM10.1
I'm using TWRP, nothing shows up on my computer when i plug the phone while running TWRP. So i'm not sure...
Just for reference, here's two other posts with the same issue, both on CM10.1:

I'm not having this issue on AOKP, like I mentioned, it could be ROM specific.
As for TWRP, there should be a mount option.

Yeah, im pretty sure its ROM specific too...
For TWRP, there is a mount button, but it doesnt seem to be there for USB mounting. I couldnt find the option to mount anything on USB...
I backed up everything and ill do a complete wipe now, just to see if it fixes it...

Mount storage perhaps? Or mount internal/external.
I'm downloading a big file right now so I can't check but will check later if you haven't got it.

Well good sir, it seems like your initial assessment was quite correct. After wiping everything (Factory, cache, dalvik, format internal) and re installing CM10.1 latest nightly, my issue is fixed.
Now im reloading everything using Titanium Backup, hopefully i get all my settings back, without restoring the issue...
Thanks alot!
Hi I have been dealing with this problem for awhile now and still haven't been able to find a fix (without rooting). After I updated JB from Kies when it came out my internal and memory card folders are completely different? Also it says I only have 11.95GB total in my internal memory. The internal memory folder says :sdcard0. And my memory card folder is: extSdCard? I'm not rooted. Does anyone know how to get the folders back to the regular names ext sd ect? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

That is how it they are formatted now. It's not a mistake or anything being messed up. I guess I'm just used the internal being sdcard0 and ex sd card being extsdcard. I don't use myfiles much. I use root explorer and it can displays it as storage and then inside that folder is extsdcard and sdcard. Or there is a fodler just called sdcard for the internal in the root of the file system.
What problem is it creating, other than just being different than you are used to ?

Yhea, i'm having some trouble too. After the update my extCard is totally mess-up. The folders with the pictures and songs are not recognized, and the Gallery doesn't show hundreds of pictures, but i see if i use a file manager. I've synced all my songs so far, but with the pictures is a mess: seems also the format is not recognized anymore and with Kies i'm not seeing a way for put the pictures in the new folder named "Photo". It's really frustrating.

I cannot use the Apps2sd app anymore. And basically I would just like to be like before the update.

i'll try not to rant too hard but Kies and OTA firmware updates are a joke. you are essentially dirty flashing one rom over another with no real clearing of caches, no resetting, no way for all the programs to regroup, rebuild and run on the system hardware/software properly. the thing about dirty flashing is, it sticks well with some devices but generally not with many others. you'll see these types of issues many times among the avid flashers and those that must have the latest release of a developers rom.
i would recommend backing everything up, booting into stock recovery, wiping data/factory reset and wiping cache. if you decide to perform another update via kies in the future, i would do this procedure before AND after the update.
yes, you have to start over when you perform these sorts of actions but you have to ask yourself, are you happy with how your device is performing now (before the update)? is it worth starting over? (it might be if you're going to run on the updated OS for a year or so) and how well do you want it to perform after you install the update?
cheers
EDIT: i just assume everyone accesses recovery and download mode so i didnt post the button combo. recovery is: Volume Up + Home + Power. release just the power button when you get a vibrate.

This is normal for a 16GB SGS3. 16GB is advertised but actual formatted available space is less. 11.95GB is right on par. This is the case for just about all devices that have memory that is writable, including hard drives on a computer.

Any particular reason why you are using Apps2sd? $10 to $20 will land you an external memory card with huge amounts of space (32GB at least). This is plenty to store music, photos, and other misc. files. And even with a ton of apps installed to internal, you still should have ample space left over. There is just no good reason to use Apps2sd on this phone as it has so much internal memory. If this is just to keep you from losing data, then I would suggest rooting and using an app such as Titanium Backup as it makes it super easy to restore apps and the corresponding data after anything that requires a factory reset.

Actually i did.
After the update, without factory reset, everything was (almost) fine… except a strange malfunction of the Gps (lock signal lost after a while) and sporadic reboot without reason. For the Gps I’ve found here the solution (NV Rebuild), but for the reboot… I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided for a factory reset. After that my ext card, with the ICS paths, was not recognized. So bucked up everything, format the ext card and let Kies sync my files and create all the folders needed from JB: Camera Photo Video for pictures, and media for the music. Now I’m let’s say 90% ready to go… I’m curios to test especially the Gps.
So been trying to work out this issue for past couple of days now. Galaxy W (obviously) PACman rom.
Updated to the latest version of rom, all fine but didn't go pristine. Eventually had some issues, biggest of which being I couldn't access internal SD card as storage, yet all my apps were working fine. So, tried again, went pristine, all fine for about a day, no issues whatsoever .... until dreaded internal sd unmounted. Tried again, pristine, double formatting everything and double clearing cache etc. No problems. Updated kernel to skull kernal to fix the bluetooth. No problems.
And now again, it's happened. I've tried to keep a mental correlation in what I'm doing to hopefully give me an idea of what's going on but not having much luck; hoping someone here knows what this issue is as it's driving me mad
I've changed my name in Google; could it be some sort of permissions thing?
USB; phone set to Media player, it might be it's happening after I've transferred but since everything is working fine, it's hard to tell
I've not restored anything, gone completly pristine (took hours) in an attempt to retrace my steps and not get this issue again. Part of me thinks I may as well just leave it as everything works, I can even install fine. But I can't browse it via any file manager or via USB, and a couple of programs I use (CoPilot for one) won't start properly because there is no SD card mounted.
Things I've tried -
CWM, fix permissions
Reboot
Checked Storage under settings, I can see how much free space there is etc.
Enabled and Disabled USB Debugging and tried to see it on my PC (nothing, external shows up fine)
Anything else anyone can think of before I wipe the lot and try again for a 4th time?

No idea why it's doing it, but yeah, seems to be the USB transfer. Problem solved.
So changed USB from Media Player to MTP and back again while connected to PC, internal storage now available.
Always the way, struggled with it for a few days, finally decide to post for help, and I solve it in less than 10 minutes of making the post :silly:
Knowing my luck, it's a known bug I've somehow glossed over in all information!
Edit - spoke too soon
After a reboot, same again. Everything "works", I can install and uninstall, but I can't browse the internal sdcard0 with a file manager or via PC. The above trick isn't working now.

Just thought I'd give it one last bump. Situation is that after every reboot, my internal sdcard is not mounted. I have to connect the phone to a PC via USB, then disconnect and hope that the phone mounts both sdcards. Usually works first time but sometimes I have to connect - disconnect 2-3 times before the internal card is mounted.
Anyone happen to know how to mount the internal card via command line? I could then workaround it with a script via smanager.
