Rom review - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

For this thread, I'm just going to summarize every Rom i used so far and write a review on here. This is just my opinion and my preference. I respect each rom and thank each developer for making these Roms. I'm creating this thread so that people can decide what rom they want to use depending on what they need. Also, this thread is targeted to people who are new to this forum and doesn't want to try out every singe rom that's out there. I usually look for performance and battery life. The kernel setting for each rom is the same. The setting I use for each rom will be:
Min: 192
Max:1200
Govenor: Samsung/HYPER <---- depends
Scheduler: cfq
Now, I use these roms for days, I don't judge on each rom by using them for a few hours. I use them for at least 4-7 days before changing into a different rom.
Just to let you know: I use the kernel that comes WITH the Rom. If I do install a different kernel, I'll post it up on this thread too. Scores are going to be between 1~10.
1. PsiRom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2496210
-Honestly, out of all the 4.3 rom i've used, this is the best for me. Never lagged a single bit and battery is pretty decent for a 4.3 rom.
-Decent amount of features, but not as much as the other 4.3 rom's I used.
-Because this is a 4.3 rom, there might be some issues: SD Card problem, Gallery issues.(Not the Rom's fault!!!!)
-It has Viper Audio, WHICH IS AWESOME~~~!!!! Depending on what setting you use, your battery life might vary.
Performance: 9
Battery Life: 8 for a 4.3 rom
2. Jedi Mind Trick 8 :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818305
- Best 4.1.2 Rom out there.
- No issues whatsoever, but I sometimes I get this weird animation lag time to time.
- Jedi Kernel is awesome whatsoever, but if you use Tiberius 2.3, my goodness... battery life is insane!!!
- A good amount of feature for a 4.1.2 Rom.
Performance: 8
Battery Life: Jedi Kernel: 7 Tiberius 2.3: 9.5
3. Hellybean 4.3 :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342057
- UPDATE! love the updates in this rom. It's sooooo active and an update comes out every week at least.
- Not that many issues with this rom and decent speed.
- Everybody said that this rom is awesome with battery life, but it didn't surprise me as much as PsiRom.
- A lot of features!
Performance: 8
Battery Life: 6
4.SlimBean: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428553
-Feature madness! So many features and i love it for that
-Not as fast as other 4.3.1 rom, but it's decent for what it has.
-Battery Life is not the best feature of this rom, can't get through a full day for me.
Performance:7
Battery Life:6
Features:10!
5.MIUI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2308946
-Totally different from other rom for those who don't know what MIUI is.
-Battery hungry Rom and decent performance.
-Features are slightly different from other roms.
-Beautiful design and awesome themes!
-It has a little bit of issues for me. Some apps crashes instantly.
Performance: 7
Battery Life:4.5
Appearance: Beautiful!
6.Shadow:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2401000
-Very debloated=more space
-Very good battery life with stock kernel, but I say that Jedi+Tiberius is better, never tried Shadow+Tiberius
-If you want something like stock, but faster, this rom might be for you.
-Not that many tweaks.
-Very Stable
Performance:8
Battery Life:8
7.United Basics :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2481542
-If you want the 4.4 experience, This is the one.
-Smooth with all the 4.4 goodies, but not 100%stable.
-Got some RR's.
-Some performance lags
-Decent Battery life.
Performance: 7
Battery Life: 7
8.D.I.R.T. : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2374223
-Buttery Smooth~
-No RR's so far! No Sd card issue, no Gallery issue(at least for me).
-So many features......
-Battery Life is amazing with the suspend action in Rom control!
Performance: 9
Battery Life: 8.5
Stability: 9
Now, these roms are just what I've used so far. I will try out different roms time to time. For right now, I'm switching between Jedi Rom and PsiRom. If you want me to try out a rom, leave a post below and I'll try it out for a couple days. Again, this is just my opinion. Your opinions might be different for each rom and I respect each opinion. I will keep this updated every time I install an updated rom or new rom I've never tried.

Even though it's your opinion. Will give you first thanks for the effort.. Keep it coming.

[Q] Rom and Battery life

Hi. I'm thinking about flashing my first ROM on the Droid Incredible for my wife. She is having terrible battery life with her phone, and I'd like to try and help her out. I really am not looking for much though. My order of prefs are:
Stability > Battery Life > Performance
Mods and tweaks and things of that nature are not really a huge concern for me. I just want everything to work well, and have great battery life. I'd love to hear some suggestions.

I'm running OVORene Community ROM and my battery last all day with GPS on internet on and 5 apps syncing all day everything on. Super stable I have no problems so far no force closes. Give it a try

But having sense 3.0 is a closer look too stock incredible and have great battery life

Nobrainer, the newest leak 2.3.4. Its only sense 1.0, so it would be familiar to her, no lag, no issues at all, and the best battery life for me on any sense rom.
If ive helped you, please hit the damn thanks button!

I'd go this route or something VERY similar to it. Just don't flash the RUU. Try to find a rooted version of the ROM.
As for AOSP, I've flashed about 5 different AOSP ROMs on my dInc and none of them have been what I'd call stable and reliable. I'm NOT a fan of any of the launchers and I do NOT like having to spend days trying to dig through the Market and threads trying to find the stuff to make AOSP do most of what Sense does right out of the box. My girlfriend likes AOSP... and I just can't understand why, but I'm always messing with it trying to figure out why it's restarting, being all herky-jerky, not responding, doing weird things for no reason... And frankly, I don't think the battery life is all that much better on AOSP than Sense.
I don't know what about CM7 or MIUI isn't stable or reliable? What doesn't work on those roms that works on sense roms? IMO, sense is bloated, slow, and outside of social networking (which I couldn't care less about anyway), adds no real functionality when compared to AOSP. Also, AOSP roms are infinitely more customizable than sense. For people that like to mess with their phones and make them their own (which being XDA, I'd think a lot are in this category), there's just simply way more you can do with AOSP, and better kernels too!
Again, some of this is just my opinion, but I fail to see how our AOSP roms can be called unstable or unreliable. It all boils down to personal preference but to say that AOSP is not stable or reliable is simply not a true statement.

Going thru the miui or the cm7 nightly threads lately, it does appear that they also have their fair share of issues. The fact of the matter is, the leaked/rooted ota is very stable, very fast, and has great battery life. It also would have no learning curve for her and she could set up her screens to her liking with whats already familiar to her. Thats why i said no brainer. Aosp is nice, ive ran them all, but it really is just personal preference. Aosp battery can be just as bad if not worse than sense. I also found my self trying to make it look like sense, so now i use sense pretty much all the time. The diffrence between sense and aosp is preference and preference only.
If ive helped you, please hit the damn thanks button!
I definitely wouldn't hesitate to recommend the stock rom for someone that doesn't really mess with their phone that much and needs it to work without issue. I personally like to have a bit more control and feature additions. I mainly posted because it was being stated that AOSP roms were unstable and unreliable, and that's simply not the case. I have recently run CM7 nightlies and MIUI (current rom) without issue. I keep up on new features and bug fixes, and there isn't anything "buggy" about either of these roms. Pretty much the only things you're gonna be missing out on are 720p recording and tv-out functionality, but for me that tradeoff is well worth it considering the other benefits.
I can't really speak on battery life comparatively, because my phone hasn't seen a sense rom for more than a few hours since I got it, but I think the difference is mainly in the kernels. There are simply better options for AOSP (right now at least), the kernels have more battery saving features than what is available for GB sense. I see that they've gotten smartass working on the new GB sense kernel though, so I would think that would help. I imagine a lot of it also has to do with your accounts and sync settings as well, for example, I'd imagine if you had two phones (one on AOSP, one on stock sense) with the same governor settings and sync settings, battery life would be pretty similar.
I would think your probably right on that. I personally have had no issues with aosp roms or any of the new gb roms. I run basic configurations with minimal apps and minimal syncing. I only install 4 apps, so i can get a rom runnin pretty good for what i need.
If ive helped you, please hit the damn thanks button!
Im using the latest OMFGB nightly, no problems, no issues, everything works.

OP you will be flooded with opinions going in all directions, it depends what you want. Pretty much any ROM here is noticeably faster than stock with better battery.
If you're looking something closer to stock, but faster and with better battery life than I would suggest Skyraider:
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?t=1314
Agreeing with nivesout, Sense adds some bloat to your phone- but some people just like the UI and don't mind whatever minimal extra lag or battery loss they get from it.
CM7 is a great AOSP ROM and just in general one of the top choices here. If you get this then you should probably download Launcher Pro (from market) instead of using ADW, but it's up to you.
MIUI is more appearance based and offers lots of theming options, however the luancher that comes with it is not as smooth as other launchers (can always be changed like you can do with CM7)
All of these ROM's are stable and well polished.
I would also suggest that you use chad's incredikernel for a custom kernel (saves battery and increases performance) and also flash the latest radio because it's trending that most people get better battery and faster speeds with it.
It seems like people are just reading his op title. Paragraph 2 states mods and themes are not what he is looking for. Its for his wife. If you go thru the new ota threads you will find people stating excellent battery life. The ota's are debloated and can be even more reduced with ti backup. His wife will have no issues with this rom, nor will she have to search market for apps, theme section for themes, install new kernels, yada yada ya.... The leaked, debloated, pre-rooted ota is a perfect solution for what he is looking for. Op, you can pm me if you have questions about which one to install.
If ive helped you, please hit the damn thanks button!
Thanks to all of you who took the time to reply. I appreciate everyone's input.
@donnyp1 Thanks for your suggestion, and if you want to put your recommendation in this thread that would be great or PM works too. What you said is pretty head on, keeping it simple and similar to what she is already used to would be great. Just need to get that battery in check.
The new OTA has given me the best battery life of any ROM I've used. However, HTC's kernel dislikes my car's Bluetooth module, so I'm back on CM7 for maximum compatibility till they or a kernel dev releases one that works with my car.
My vote is on the OTA. Fast, long lasting and very stable. As a second choice I say CM7. Only thing about CM7 is that she would have to spend more time setting it up.
The sense 2.1/3.0 and 3.0 roms still have some bugs and general performance issues without no real boon to battery life. Lockscreen and quick settings sure do rock though.
Sent from my Droid Incredible using the XDA app.
I have run all 3, and liberation beta 4 is really working well. I had no issues with any though. I used ti backup to remove the rest of the verizon stuff, it eorks fantastic. Display at 30%, i get great battery life on my phone. I also flashed the newest radio.
If ive helped you, please hit the damn thanks button!
Godsmacked's senseless 2.0 is a great blend of sense and aosp. Battery life is awesome, it flies, and I haven't had a single fc yet.
Maybe I'm wrong but I was always under the impression that Kernel effects battery life not ROM. I have been going between CM7 Nighties and MIUI.US, with their kernel only get 6 to 8 hours. But if I use incredikernel with incredicontrol I get between 18-27 hours depending on use. Incredicontrol enables fast charge and sound boost, also allows you to set min and max volts. I'm undervolted min 750 and stable with CM7 Nightly 173. I loved Nils' Business GingerSense 3.0 but I personally decided I can't live without incredikernel, so I will wait until he releases a gingersense kernel.
http://www.incredikernel.com/
I have not tried but there are mod's for Gingersense for better battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216306
For choices on ROM's best to go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969371
I've been running MIUI for about a week now and I can't believe how great the battery life has been.
I personally have been using gingerbread-inc-deck with chads incredikernel as my daily for over a month now. It's stable and I've had great battery life. I've tested a few sense 3.0 roms, but the battery just doesnt seem to last as long for me.

[Q]Which ROM are you using?

Hello All!
I started this thread a while ago on the SGSII so I thought I'd take the liberty of creating another for the GNexus!
Its simple, answer the poll and tell me how the ROM is performing and WHY your using it.
Got it? GOOOOOOD
Not yet decided mate, but I would love to get some other peoples opinions so cheers for this thread
Eaglesblood because I love me some kernels and the smartass governor. I want to try AOKP though, whenever a smartass kernel becomes available for it.
Does anyone think any of the ROMs have a lot better battery life than stock/the other ROMs?

If anything it would worsen battery with all the mods added but I haven't seen a vast difference in battery
I've tried all these ROM and this is my take on them.
Android Rev. - Lightweight and fast. Features were boring for me.
MoDaCo - Interesting features, huge battery drain.
EaglesBlood - Didn't spend a lot of time with this one, the red border flashing bug was annoying.
AOKP - I liked the features but need to fix the market license bug.
Now I'm on stock ROM, i9250XWKK9 build. Hope battery performs well with this build.
I'm on a stock rom that's rooted, busy boxed, and deodexed by bigxie. I'm however running frqncos dec13 test kernel, he_stheone64 apm+back light mod, and a 5Hx4w grid modified stock launçher.

[Q] Fastest thing in Galaxy Nexus

Hi!
Do you know what ROM is the fastest (with better performance) for our Nexus? I don't care if it is Stock or Custom, all I want is the better performance/battery life rom possible.
I am now with CM11 unoficial by playfulgod and I like it because it is 4.4, but the phone takes too long to open the apps and lags a little bit in fast transactions....
EDIT: I also don't care about the version, 4.4, 4.3, 4.2, 4.1, anything... the changes are minimal from 4.1 to 4.3 and 4.4 has its pros and cons
Flash and find out. Thats your best option.
Edit: Wrong section. Sorry. How the h*ll did i end up in Galaxy Nexus section.
I'm using CM official nightlies and find it quite good. I found 4.3 faster but like others have said it's a case of trying different rom / kernel combinations. What works well for me night not be much good for you and vice versa. A lot of different factors come into play. Apps used, background apps etc.

I have just flashed Gummy's 4.4 rom just trying it out from BelieveRom. I was looking for something faster with some of the new features and this had most of them. Real smooth so far with steady battery use on stock kernel. Will try some other kernels to see if it will add the butter.

Care to lay out all the tweaked build prop, performance scripts? How big is this extended battery? Is it the one from Verizon that Samsung made or is it one of those big 3,000+ sized ones that makes the phone super thick? seeing 4 hours of screen on time and only half battery used seems too good to be true.
thanks guys!
I will try a few roms here and give you the feedback later
The performance were only good on 4.1.2

im use the super big extended battery.. 4000 mah.. its big but worth it.
i dont like to use power bank as alternative.
im using pure performance™ scripts.. but carefull in scripting, it may cause overwrite the existing build.prop.

Thats pretty nice. It seems way big for me though. I'm not a make the phones a slim as you can kind of person, but i do like a happy medium.
Vanir is pretty smooth and fast. Battery isn't greatest but performance kicks ass on my toro. 4.4 flies but still has black boxes
Yes, Vanir is very smooth. But the most important is to install custom kernel. For now the best are ASKP and Mpokang SuperRAM. If you install one of these kernels, i think every ROM will be smooth.
I suggest to try MetalOmni - very fast 4.4 ROM.
ITS ALL YOUR OPINION. FLASH AND FIND OUT. These threads arent even allowed. And on top of that: how would you feel if you had put alot of effort into making a ROM and people dont like it because its "slow". Just try and find out seriously. Youre maybe the 100th with this thread. This will probably be closed in a couple of days.

well, then I will have to flash all the roms there are to see for myself which one is the best in terms of speed. considering that there are at least 5 different roms just for 4.4 and for 4.3 (and previous) there are much more roms... I would need to flash about 20 roms (or more) and test them at least a day or two to see which ones are better... By my calculations, I will need at least 1 month. Considering that android isn't my life, I have many other things more important to do, I will spend more than a month doing that testing thing...
So, do you really think I can test them all for myself? Shouldn't I ask here for names of the best roms in terms of speed that many members have tested? This way I will only test the 3/4 most mentioned, not the all 20. I know that the developers do a lot of work in their roms, but there are ones better than others for many things, I don't think the developer of rom X would mind if I prefer the rom Y from other developer because it is faster. Maybe the rom X has more options and other things, but lacks in speed, so the developer of rom X isn't interested in making a rom for speed, it isn't inferior to the other rom, just different.
If this thread is locked, even finding it unfair and kind of stupid, I don't really care. I already got a few opinions and I'm testing some roms here. Thanks a lot for the ones who helped me and aswered this thread.

Well, you got me curious.
I am currently testing SlimKat ROM and it looks fast enough for me.
Unfortunaly, it's still on beta (4.4 KitKat), so you might expect a few bugs.
Still, it's a good ROM, in my opinion.

Looking for a rom..

Hey, I'm looking for a ROM that has the following features:
- NO bugs
- Must be stable, very fast, and good battery life
- It can be any version (4.1.2 up)
- Must be rootable and without knox
(I saw cyanogen team made a kitkat rom for note 2..how is it?)
Currently I have 4.3 deodexed, pre rooted, deknoxed rom with note 3 spen features but it is slow, has relevant bugs, and it crashes often.
I looked in the android dev section but there are too many rom and I dont know if they have the feature I'm looking for.
Thank you!
There's no such thing as 'bug free Roms' especially for custom Roms since even the ROM developed by the manufacturer has bugs in them.
But if you want to have a 'stable' ROM, you might want to stick to 'stable' or RC aka release candidate. These Roms should have noticeably lesser bugs than nightlies even though nightlies are quite usable as daily drivers. 'Fast and longer battery life' - Disabling animations and other unnecessary widget and apps like halo will make a ROM faster with longer battery life. Customs Roms are all rooted and knox free.
I'm currently using PAC rom and on a good day I'm able to make it last for about 14 hours or more depending on usage. CM is a no frills type of ROM. It should be fast and decent enough when it comes to battery life but its quite subjective and varies from person to person.

Try Illusion. It's wicked fast and amazing battery life. (Use plasma kernel, stweaks and undervolt. Makes it even faster.) No known bugs. (Except for the thousands I'm experiencing that no one else has.)

Thank you!

Did you go through the Ditto Note 3 (DN3) page??
Suggest you give it a shot. However, please confirm the compatibility with your device.
Agree with all above comments regarding the bug thing. But IMHO I thing Slimbean or Slimkat are really good choices, if you are looking for AOSP, that is. If you are looking for TW roms, Jedi roms are, again, IMHO, the most stable out there. All of them had good battery life and are speedy too....

Well there are many other tweaks for an optimized battery life, which can be managed even without a custom rom

[Q] help me choose a ROM

I need some help choosing a new rom. This would be my first custom ROM on my GN2.
Currently in running 4.3 stock and it has terrible battery life and is slow. Stock 4.1.2 was actually way better.
What I'm looking for is:
- touchwiz features. I don't want to lose s-pen
- stable for DD usage
- good battery life. At least a day on moderate usage
- good performance. At least equivalent to stock 4.1.2 or better
- note 3 features would be nice but not a requirement
Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks
You just need to test each and see what you like. Go see development thread and test some.
Touch wiz ones are MeanBean,sky note,ditto, stock 4.3 rooted,alliance

My votes for Mean Bean....
But agree with eZ,,,, No one but yo,u will know if your satisfied with it.
And no one will be running the phone the same way you do, ie: sames apps, same wireless use, same texting, on and on and on.

Research and see what best suits what you want. If you are looking for stability then a stock based rom would be best. If want more vanilla android the a CM based rom is best. Its all about what you want. I personally use the Jedi Roms cause I like the stock stability with the extras thrown in

Agree with all of the above.. Gotta test and see....
I am on Ditto Note 3 with Agni Kernel and it's smokin' hot! Blazing fast and great battery life.
But still you gotta test them out for yourself.
I would say MIUI, after testing many many ROMS which all in the end was quite a like i found MIUI roms to be devoted to appearance and (perhaps mere coincidence) better battery time.
This is really not a question others can answer for you, as eZ says, test and see, you will in the end find a sweetspot.
Miui= ijunk look/Crapple IMHO
What's best there's no best like all the previous posters told you.
Everything is in my One stop shop for you to choose from!!

I'm not going to recommend anything but you test what appeals to you liking. Cuz we're all different!!
