[Q] - SD Card not working now - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hey I know I maybe left with no choice but to format it but I thought I would ask anyway. I pulled my 32gig card out of my TF700 and put it into my note 3 and everything was fine. It saw the card and life was good. Now I powered it off for the night and turned it back on this morning to get it saying the SD card is damaged and needs to be formatted.
Is there anyway to get the data off at this point and also why the heck did that happen in the first place? I just want to avoid blowing it out again if it was something I did.

You can try putting it in an SD adapter and plugging into a computer and see if the files are accessible. Try more than one adapter if you have it. If you can't do anything on a comp or your tf700 with it you're Sol and need to format it if you can even do that still.

Thanks, I was just surprised to see it work fine in the TF700 and in the phone till I powered it off and on again. It's just weird.

I actually just got off the phone with Samsung. I had gone thru 3 64 GB cards. He told me I doing it wrong. Said I need to get brand new card format on pc then install in phone and format again then it will work flawlessly. Dunno why but I gonna do it and I asked about fat32 and he said that also corrupts the card. Some more then others.
NOTE 3

Lol. You got duped by a ding dong making up stuff. Never had a fat32 goes bonkers. All my cards have lasted long enough where I feel I got my money's worth, at least 3 years.

Do you take your cards in and out a lot? Even though they're hot swappable it is not a good idea. Always uoumt the cards first, or even better turn off the device when possible.

Only time cards come out is when they corrupted. Other than that the battery cover does not come off
NOTE 3

Hmmm... Running any app2sd apps or any other scripts that make use of SD card? Could have something rogue corrupting it. I've had a couple sandisks get corrupted in the past but they were recoverable. Recoverable as in I was able to reformat. Haven't had a sandisk burn out on me yet. Other brands yes.

I don't care about data lol how do I reformat it? With what program

1. If you can still get into recovery, you can navigate the menus and format it there
2. Plug it into your computer via micro sd adapter, right click it from my computer and click format, it'll warn you about losing data, click yes, may take a minute or 2 either way.
my computer wont read it but i will try through recovery

Im having the same problem as you bro except its with a 2GB when I put it in my phone it automatically says "blank sd " and I try to format it but it stays unmounted. And tried a microsd card reader and it will pick up but makes the computer super slow and unresponsive and can't get it to format there either.

Try rebooting your computer, give it 5 minutes to run, try inserting your sd card, and give it some time to load. If the memory card is corrupted, it takes extra time to read...that worked for me regarding that problem.
I had this happen with my Wintec 16GB card, I managed to find some recovery software online (can't remember the name right now, sorry) and used that to recover some stuff but I couldn't get everything. I ended up formatting it with this from my PC and sent it back to Newegg.

Sd card problem!

Blank SD card.(unsupported file system)
i try re-format it. but after awhile the problem just keep coming back.
i think the problem is the phone ( XPERIA ION OF CAUSE ) is putting something inside that cause it to have problem.
Note: i format it...(start from clean)
put some video inside. ( cause it happen before so i don't want to put a lot of things )
works fine for about a day?
i try to open the video by the photo widget, fail. video cannot be played

Are you formatting the card with the phone or in your computer? Have you tried you phone with a different card? Maybe you have a damaged phone, same goes for the card. I got a 64 GB card for my phone, and had to format it with the phone before being able to use it, after that I haven't had any trouble. The only thing is that every time that I connect my phone through USB to my PC (Win7), it tells me the card is damaged and gives me the option of scanning and fixing it or ignore it. I choose ignore, but it a bit annoying to do it every time.

Your phone came with a memory card?! Mine didn't.
Back on topic, I have had similar issues. I found that is I keep the phone in mass storage mode, and dont allow the internal memory to connect to the computer my issue goes away. I have ICS installed. So long as my internal memory does not connect, my issue has not come back. Give that a shot and see if it works for you as well.

me too , i have this probs
I had this issue once with my OG Dinc. The card just stopped working in the phone but still works fine in the computer to this day. I would bet on your card being faulty.
As for the Ion sd card I feel cheated as mine came with a 4gb card. ?? Got it at Boo Buy also. Lucky for me I had just picked up a 8gb card for another Dinc I acquired.
I too, have the same problem. I have to reformated my card a few times since I got the phone (just about a month). My card is fine, but after using a while, it became unuseable even in my computer. Reformat it, everything's fine but a week later, it came back! I'm on 2.3.7.

Could just be the card. I've had bad ones from the start, had good ones go bad, etc..
I have a generic card that would not work at all unless it was put in to an adapter, and then only sometimes. I've since put it into my Zoom H2 recorder where it seems it's the only place it wants to work full time.
I personally won't buy any off brand SD cards anymore, Sandisk only for me, have yet to have one of these crap out yet.
Make sure you are unmounting the phone in windows before you unplug it. That is what corrupted my card on my incredible.

I see. I'm living in Vietnam, those brand-name cards are so expensive. This card I've used for more than a year with my old Arc, class 10, without any problem. Since it goes with my new Ion, there comes problems! I'm saving money to buy a new card based on your advice! Thank you so much!

Yes, I did it all the time and sometimes I turned off the phone to take the card out for safety. Thank you!
Mine didn't come with sht! wth???
Probably is the card though, I've had similar issues in the past, none with Ion though. Sdcards can be rather fickle and hidden files can get stuck on there much like on a flash drive. I have a box full of flash drives that are irreparable.
Try replacing the card first. Also I usually let Windows repair mine when it asks. Seems to help. eb

Galaxy S3 Won't recognize any sd cards

Not sure if this is common or not but I have tried everything I can think of, and I don't see anything.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s3 (brand new, stock build) but everytime I put in an sdcard The settings>storage still says I need to insert it.
I have resigned myself to it being a hardware issue, but I would really like a more pragmatic response
WTF man after 4 years I break with my n1 for this?!?!?!

I came here looking for answer to this issue and laughed before blowing in the slot fixed problem. Now why didn't I think of that?
Got a pre used Galaxy Appolo 15800 and it will not read from sd card. It knows the card is there but will not mount/unmount or format.
Went to shop and tried other cards but still the same.
I am told the phone was on contract to 3 network and althought it has been unlocked the shop man wondered if there was a feature set into the phone by 3 so that reader doesnt work when the phone is unlocked form their network.
along the lines of blowing into the slot, I cut a strip from an old credit card and wiggled it about inside..
Bingo........ all systems go!!!!!!

I simply cannot believe this!!... I searched and read countless XDA, AndroidCe*tral forums and tech (C-NET) blog entries just to find countless posts of failing/corrupted SanDisk 32GB Ultra cards (as mine) inside S3's guts. No other card was working either and was resigning to reflash stock ROM and take it so tech support.
An additional search try and came to this post... And still cannot believe a simple (but powerful) blow inside the SD card slot actually solved the problem!! Thanks man! You saved my day (and my S3, my SD card and a week using a crap replacement phone)! :good:

Blew in it. Couldn't help but think of this https://xkcd.com/218/

External SD card disappeared...

So I woke up this morning, phone says SD card unplugged, please insert new...knowing that I obviously did not remove my external sd card I then proceed to check
Settings, Storage --> (nothing shows up)
Boot into recovery --> can't mount external SD card
plug it into PC --> nothing shows up
So now the question is, do I have a bad/dead micro SD card or else?
I am on CM10 which is updated nightly, that might have something to do with the SD card, I dont know.
Edit-- missed where you said you already tried directly from computer.
Might just be a dead card.
Unless it is just not being assigned a drive letter on the pc, the card is toast. If you are using windows you can got to the disk management snap in from the administrative tools and see if it is listed at all, if it doesn't show there it is fubar. Easiest way to get there is right click computer, manage, disk management. For linux or mac im sure there is a similar tool but i couldn't tell how to get there or use it.
Which recovery do you have? Same thing happened to me on 6.0.1.4 Touch. Computer still saw the card, so i pulled everything off the card, reformatted with the computer, then changed recovery. Phone saw it after that and no more problems since.

Thats just the nature of flash memory, eventually it does go bad and unlike mechanical drives which often give plenty of warning of impending failure flash rarely does. Granted 2 months is obviously not acceptable it could be just a freak thing or maybe just an inferior brand. It is also highly susceptible to static discharge, especially in a SD card type format where the pins are exposed. Although possible, i doubt a static shock happened inside the phone but it could have possibly been damaged and just took a while to completely fail.

Get a new card...i would also check on any warranty offered by the manufacturer, that goes for OP too. Depending on the brand there may be a 1 year or even lifetime warranty, some of the lesser brands might not have a warranty at all. Although i haven't followed my own advice in this category as the last 2 16 GB micro SD's i've purchased have been fairly cheap class 10's, you more often than not get what you pay for. I would also recommend going for the class 10 cards, not only do they have the fastest transfer speeds (and maybe because of this) they seem to be more reliable then their slower cousins.

Although i've never had one of their SD's, Kingston is one of the top tier memory companies and carry lifetime warranties on most (if not all) of their products. At the very least i would expect a year.

In my experience SanDisk is considered a cheapo brand but they have been around long enough to have overcome that reputation. I would imagine they also have a warranty program although i can't speak from personal experience, definitely worth checking into.
Im quite sure that my kingstone sd card is genuine..
Any possibilities that my S3 killed it?

Sorry for my bad english n grammar lol

I don't think SanDisk is a cheapo brand since they have been making great cards for a long time. They have a great warranty program. They will replace anything within a year for sure. I had one that you couldn't read the serial number on so they still replaced it.
SanDisk has a problem by being the most well known microsd, they are faked by chinese companies all the time and those fakes look just like the real ones. Therefore, you buy a fake, paying real prices, that looks real, and you blame SanDisk. I think that was what happened in my experience with a dead card, and they still replaced it.
Wait a Minute same thing happened to me just right NOW!
I saw my phone screen showed that MicroSD was removed and them I reinserted it on the phone and nothing nothing
Put it on the PC it shows Drive letter but cannot format
OMG this is CM10 Damaging microSD Cards? My sd card was 32gb San disk class 10 full of data

You can't just format it from "My Computer". You will have to go into device manager and find it, then format it that way. Otherwise it will not work.

Sd Card pop up message

Constantly getting sd card pop up saying click here to transfer files,
despite swiping it away, closing it down, it keeps reappearing every 20 minutes or so!
It seems a problem on some Samsung phones inc Note 10 Plus 5g, but despite trying
most things people have suggested on the net, i cant stop this buggy pop up !
Have even factory reset phone again, and sd card, both in phone, and on laptop
Any one got any solution for it, or have i got a faulty phone?
Card i'm using is a brand new, Integral 256GB Micro SD Card 4K Video Premium High Speed Memory Card SDXC Up to 100MB s Read Speed and 50MB s Write speed V30 UHS-I U3 Class 10
Thanks in advance for any help

Never heard of the brand of SD Card you're using.
My guess, since it's brand new, it's defective at best.
I'd return it for a refund & get a better known brand such as SanDisk or Samsung.
My guess is that you have a faulty SD card. I would return it if I were you or get a new one. Cheap SD cards malfunction often. I've been a victim myself. That's why I only buy reputable names from sources that will accept returns if damaged. I've lost precious memories due to this issue.

Thanks for replies, i actually reset phone and card again this morning
thought i fixed the fault, but after 2 hours it came back!
So back to Amazon ,and back to Samsung sd card! lol
Just put the card back into my old Note 8, just to see if it happens on that phone,
as Note 10 is a refurbished like new, and need to see if it the phone or card thats actually faulty,
otherwise retailer is gunna blame the card, and not their phone, and Amazon are going to blame the phone more than likely ! lol

A hard reset (OS reload) of the phone effectively addresses viruses, trojans and old OS loads but little else.
Many times the same settings issue remains to be toggled or triggered again.
Find and address the core issue directly.
•Clean card contacts with a tissue and 97% isopropyl alcohol.
•Do a low level format on card if this doesn't resolve the issue, replace the card.
This card works perfectly out of the box:

Integral are a good quality lower cost SD card supplier in UK
Not sure how to help the OP out but I have the same card and no issues.
Well i formated old Note 8 memory card
128GB Micro SD SDXC Samsung EVO Plus UHS-I U3 Card
Been in phone now for nearly a day, and no errors or notifications have popped up on my Note 10 Plus!
Obviously the phone didnt like something with this certain Integral card, as it worked back in my old Note 8 without any problem?
One of lifes mysteries, but now gone back to Amazon for my £28 refund, and hopefully no more hassle.

Do a low level format on the computer using a apk like Lexar's designed to do a low level format. Simply wiping the card isn't enough sometimes and without a low level format it will remain corrupted.
Sharing a card between two devices can cause card corruption, try to avoid doing so. Usually you can swap between two Androids but be very wary of swapping with other devices like cams etc. Do a full format in the new device to ensure compatibility and stability. Not doing this can result in corrupted card even if it may seem to be functional at first.
You can lose all the data on the card like this and even if you can recover it, it will be in bits and pieces... more or less a useless heap of disjointed data.

I did all the low level format, on both cards, but it still didnt stop the card playing up in my Note 10, and actually corrupting 2 pics,
so i wasnt going to risk that, just needed to make sure it wasnt the phone at fault, as it was only a few days old, but guess it was the card!
lets hope it goes ok from now on! lol

Sorry to hear that.
I've never blown out a ram stick or SD card.
Remember they can be destroyed by one ESD event; their data ports have limited ESD protection. It can happen instantly or fail weeks even years latter, multiple smaller ESD insults can cause accumulative damage over time as well.
•Never touch the contacts.
•Keep static charges low by keeping RH at 50% or higher in the room.
Lol no wool sweaters.
•Touch yourself to an earth ground to discharge any static buildup or use an ESD strap/mat to keep everything near the same potential.
A little extra care can avoid a lot of cursing latter on...

If you play with a good ESD meter you'll be amazed how much of charge you can build up on almost any nonconductor. Once the RH drops below 20% ESD becomes very problematic and widespread.
High G impacts ie dropping a chip onto concrete from 3 feet can also kill a chip.
ESD is what kills most of these cards and ram sticks though. If you can see, feel or hear static it's already enough to damage semiconductors. Punch a microscopic hole through an insulation layer only a couple microns thick (doesn't take much voltage to do that) and it's a done deal.
Their service life is tens of thousands of cycles so it's doubtful one will wear out prematurely if used with care. High cycle usage though can wear them out.
My oldest flash cards are 16 yo and still functional.
I've had multiple SanDisk cards fail and a PNY. I've had really good reliability with the Samsung EVO Plus and Select cards.
You can pick up a 512GB Samsung EVO Select from Amazon for under $80.

Same here, sandisk cards I have used failed miserably, also kingston ones, I ended using ADATA cards, not a single one has failed, ad for speed, I really find them adequate, at least for normal std uses

When you say "fail" what do you mean?
A low level format couldn't recover it?
Showed multiple bad sectors?
These cards can be corrupted fairly easily but can be completely salvaged with a low level format.
Without it they will be inaccessible and seem to be "dead". Even new cards can do this.

I mean as completely dead and unusable. It would not recognize the partition. Sandisk had released a bad batch of 128GBs a while back. They were unreadable on multiple devices.

May have been dead but a corrupted card will behave like this. A 3rd party PC low level formatting app can access these corrupted cards and repair their file structure.
Normal formatting tools like Windows one will do nothing if it even can register their presence at all.

When I mean dead, I mean DEAD. I was unable to do ANYTHING. The partition was not even readable. I used different tools like Recuva and EASUS and got nothing. I've been using SD cards for YEARS. I know how to fix them.

If the computer software can't read what's there you won't see any partition. Androids wuv to do that.
That doesn't mean it's dead... as long as you have a low level formatting tool that it shows up when connected it probably is salvageable. Make sure any needed Window drivers are loaded...
If you've had multiple failures it's time to reexamine what you're doing.
I have close to 2 dozen flash cards with some dating back 16 years and no unrecoverable failures. Data was lost but not the bloody card!
