No Expert, but after digging I found where that wallpaper is located. As mentioned no expert but I was able to change mine, it will still show default wallpaper when setting color in accessory but the one you place is displayed. It is located in:
framework-res.apk in res\drawable-sw360dp-xxhdpi\mainbg_pattern_mainarea.png
I just pulled to desktop, opened with 7-zip, replaced, pushed.
Maybe someone with more theming experience can create a better way to mod it so that you don't have to set the color as it takes away from the actual image. Tried taking a screen shot but no go. Just using solid black background with size 1002x891and naming it the same as what it was in that dir.
If i helped, hit thanks!

Did you read what this does? Sorry, this is for sview background for those that have the sview case not changing the homescreen background, wouldn't have to edit the framework file for that.

I'm trying to modify certain icons on the status bar but not having any luck. Some files are locked when I open them up in photoshop so I can't edit them.
Anyone have any idea why that is? It isn't a .9 file...
I've attached a screen shot so you can see what I'm talking about:

This is most likely because the image is in indexed color mode. Try changing it to RGB by going to Image > Mode > RGB. Hope this helps!
Edit: I'm stealing the text from the very bottom of your signature btw
Double click the locked layer in the layer palette a dialog should pop up and hit ok that usually unlocks the layer for me.

Awesome, I ran into this problem a few times as well, some of the images in the framework are indexed and some are not, there are even a few in there that are grayscale, which will really throw you off when you are trying to add color haha

I'm not on my laptop right now so I can't check to make sure this works, but try changing the mode to indexed color and save it. Then exit photoshop and reopen it and open the file again and change it to RGB. That should do the trick, if not let me know and i'll look into it myself; i'll be back at my comp in like 15 mins lol. Also, if it still isn't being colored in RGB mode, make sure that the hue/saturation is not turned all the way down in the document itself, not just the layer.

I have not looked myself. But try framework-res.apk in /system/framework/
or if the lockscreen has an .apk in /system/app/ try that too
Looked through there and found a couple that I might work on and see if it works and also its the best quote out of all three movies or. " what do you mean just rebuild it. And who's going to give a loan? What do you have an atm on that torso light bright of yours"

Some of the images are compiled with special attributes. I don't remember what the exact extension is but it will be like .png.9 or something like that after the png. These have to be made with a tool in eclipse as far as I know. Any of the rest of the regular png files can just be edited like normal and placed back in the apk.

I would love to know if there is any way to change the background behind the virtual keys from black to something else. I've looked through the systemUI.apk and I don't see where I would do that.

Bump, if you can find this then possibly the image could be transparent then the full screens display can be viewed.
You know, I didn't think of that but that would be epic. Very epic.

It should be easy to change the icons/background. I was thinking about replacing these icons with some better ones as I don't really like black/grey theme, but couldn't find any nice ones (wasn't looking too hard either...)
You could check out my thread and if there isn't one over there you like you could request something ill be working on new ones on Monday evening

Its pretty easy to change the backgrounds really. As the thread above states, just drag out the ic_sysbar_highlight.png button. Open it in Photoshop, add the desired image fine you want, set it to the back and allign, save it, put it back in the res\Drawable-xhdpi folder and flash. There ya go.
That only changes the button press right? Instead of the blue circle when you press a virtual key you get an image? Because that's what the file they replace with the mod is for.

Seems to be a ton of requests for this. I did transparent to start, but will take requests. Please include hex codes for specific colors. I can take the lines out too if wanted.Push like a normal system app. Enjoy!

Requests are mostly done. If i get a ton more, i'll switch to a gallery view of screenshots, so as to not make a mile-long post of screens.
Def want to try these! Just to verify.. These are the widget that stays at the top of all screens right? Or is it the old Search widget that is set on one screen?
Do I just use Root Explorer to back up my current Search.apk, replace & reboot?
Thanks!

These are actually the widget, as that is what a lot of people were requesting. I guess in theory, you could put one at the top of each screen, lol. I'll definitely be doing the regular one too, though within the next few days. I always install through adb, but yes, your method works too- it's just like any other system app.

Progress update, I've been at the hospital for the birth of my second child, so i haven't had a whole lot of time. I have managed to clean up the search results (what was Google thinking with that ugly gray?), but the persistent search bar is kind of hard to find the correct files to change. Might have to poke around in framework later. I'll post the search result changes later tonight.

Sorry for the newbie question but this means since it's a system app, I would need to be on a deodexed rom as well? Thanks.

Technically speaking you don't have to be deodexed to run a themed app as long as it doesn't call on the services of other apps. If it does, you run a high risk of getting a lot of FC's so most developers just say de-odexed only. This may run on odexed roms, but don't count on it. Make a backup of your original first if you want to try it.

Thanks for this explanation, I didn't realize that.
After some investigation, it seems that the persistent google top bar is actually located in my novalauncher.apk. There were quite a few issues with installation as a system/app (had to reflash the rom to get it to behave properly) and I'm not sure i want that headache, so i think i'll just do the widgets as they are completely self contained. If you'd like to do the persistent bar, I'll attach a NovaLancher.apk that has been themed ICS blue, but be warned- for some reason, it doesn't behave like a regular system app, so be careful.

It's a system app, so you don't "install" at all. Sounds like the easiest way for you is to use a root level explorer and copy the .apk file into the /system/app folder. It should then appear in your app drawer.
i did that and now i have lost the original and yours..
i can see the app in the system apps but i cant see it either on the app drawer or inside the apps.
What are you suggesting to do?
Thanks.
I was playing around in SqLite Editor, and I stumbled upon a way to enable the grid UI in settings.
What I did was open SqLite Editor, found Settings Storage, then into Setting.db, then into System, found "settings-gridui" and change the value to "1"
I have the S5 found Note 4 and the setting menu as as a grid was pretty cool and to get it back on the Note has made me love this phone even more.
Try it out and let me know if it work a for you all as well.
Thanks for the find! Trying out now
I hate the fact that if you change it to like tab view or something, you can't go back in

Lol is this why you asked about the sqlite editor?
Grid view can be permanently enabled with xml edits. It will also give you the view options you are looking for so you can change views whenever you want. You decompile SecSettings and edit the appropriate xml file (can't remember exactly which one unless i'm looking at the files, sorry) to enable grid view and disable tab view. This combination will allow you to switch between the two views with the menu button. However it won't let you use tab and grid settings at the same time for some reason... only list and grid or list and tab.
What you are doing is editing the settings.db file which is fine but if you do a reset it will be lost.

Great find, I'll toy around with it and see what will come of it. Thanks for the info and instructions
Decompile SecSettings.apk
Look in res/values for bools.xml
I believe you will find the setting in there... i'm pretty sure.
Just remember that you can only set one of them to true. If you set grid and tab both to true, it will not work.
Save then recompile and push it into your priv-app folder then set permissions and it will stick.
