Hi !
This website has tons and tons of guides on how to build ROMs and kernels for devices.
You can try to use this thread to look for various types of guides , from theming to using the repo tool.. it has a link to a guide for almost everything : Guide Ride by NickHalden
Alternatively you could try learning about android development from the xda-university ... which also contains various guides about ROM , kernel compilation and their development.
Also you can Search for whatever guide you need.
Next time around whenever you are asking a question related to android please try to post in the Q and A section cause it may attract more answers to your question than this forum which is for topics related to the xda-developers' site as a whole which includes development for a huge variety of devices.

I'd like to start poking around a bit with the Android source; but had a few questions and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I just watched XDA's blog regarding compiling Android, but it was all for devices that are made for the native code - and as we all know, the Evo is not one of those.
So I figured before I jump into this and go through all the trouble of setting things up and all, I wanted to ask - what would I need to do differently to compile a flashable zip for my Evo? Obviously I can't go straight from the 4.0.3 source, so where would I be able to find a compatible repository for the Evo?
If I could find something that would work to begin with without any tinkering then that would be great (And then I could break it later while I learn and play around a bit )
Search for a thread in the dev forum by lithid-CM. Its a guide and a good place to start.
Good luck.

I have searched and perhaps I am blind but, can someone show me a link to rooting a sprint gs3 using a Linux machine?
I feel like it is right in front of me but I'm missing it somehow. Thanks in advance.

Very first sticky thread under Android Development, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680
Read the entire thread. Rooting with Linux distribution is discussed. I searched within the thread and found several posts referencing "Linux."

I think their is a great need to have a sticky made as a directory for information regarding the how to's and don't do's of Rom building, development, and troubleshooting :silly:. It would be really nice to clean up the forums with guides on common errors and the like so we don't have so many open posts of "hey, its not working". :highfive:
A mix of chef central, android q/a, android general, and misc Android development have this pretty much covered!

I really don't think people, especially beginners, know that these things exist. I think if we had these sources all in one spot we may even have more well built roms for our phones. More like a directory of sorts than self made tutorials.

Hello everyone,
I'm interested in building my own ROM for my phone and would love to build directly from AOSP source. I've done some research about setting up the build environment and everything, but unfortunately all guides I have read and found is for the Nexus set of devices. I have also read about cooking and building from CM, AOKP, RootBox, ect... But I would much rather build straight from AOSP.
Can anyone give me some tips/links on where I can start?
Thanks!
Re: [Q] Where should I start to build from AOSP
Google has a bunch of great information on the AOSP website. Guides and everything.

I am aware, I have been primarily searching Google but the only results I find are for other phones. I don't seem to find any information for this phone, and that's what I'm looking for. =)

I don't think you're quite understanding me. The main aosp website has a section that tells you all you need to know about how android is built from the ground up and how to get started doing that.
Edit: at least it did when I started looking into it. Haven't been to that site in a while.

I found somewhere in a thread here in xda someone had put together a pdf that explained how to develop specifically for the I747. Search around. I've been trying to look for the thread but have had no luck so far

Your motivation gave me the will to find it lol. Knowing that it was there I spent about an hour searching and combing these forums to find it, and I finally did! =D
Wasn't the title I was expecting it so I probably overlooked it a few times lol.

Thanks a lot man! Ton of good information I get to look over now lol.
Hey now.
I offer guidance/support rooms and themes for a phone that is not in xda's list.
First thing I did was try to find my device (LG ms910) in the phone list.... and she is not in there.
I imagine other people may be looking for support/mods/etc for this phone which is not easily found on xda's forums.
So the big question... "can this phone be added to xda's support list? If not, what is the best way to go about sharing my work and opening discussions on pertaining to the LG MS910 (Esteem)
Thanks in advance
Dover (xda noob, sorry)

You can always post your stuff in
Miscellaneous android developement section if your device is not listed here. That is the best place to share your work.
You can request a separate forum for your device if developement goes high.
And sorry for yesterday's misunderstanding, you language was foul, better take care next time. And oh, welcome to xda, yesterday's welcome was not so good
