With all of the issues I'm reading about with the Nexus 7 and ghost touches, WiFi and GPS, I'm incredibly nervous about purchasing one of these tablets. I guess I'm just looking for assurances that Google/Asus have solved the ongoing problems with the latest batches, or that they aren't that prevalent.
Are these touchscreen problems really that common, or is it a small percentage of units affected?
Has the GPS signal issue been corrected by the Google OTA patch?
Has the WiFi connection issue been improved at all?
Thanks in advance!!

Eesh. This doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence. And I just got done reading a few pages in the "random reboot" thread. What the heck is going on with the Nexus 7?!?
I don't know if I am just one of the lucky people. But I have had no issues with any of the issues that I have read on these forums. I have had no touchscreen issues, no wifi issues, and I don't really use the GPS that much but the few times that I have used it the GPS has worked fine, and I use my tablet quite a bit. I think it is a good little tablet.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Maybe I'll pick one up and give it a test run... does anyone know what the return policy is at Best Buy?

The less you use it the less probabilities of you finding issues with it, however that doesn't mean every single Nexus 7 have issues, that's true. Some don't, some have small issues, others have really big issues like mine.
Sometimes the way people use their device allows them to never really know if they have issues, again, sometimes it simply doesn't have issues. My best advice, buy it, try it really hard(do everything you can) before the warrant goes off, if you don't have any issues then you'll have a really nice Nexus device.
I picked up mine from best buy and they give you a 15 day return policy for any reason. That's where I got mine and I love it. I had a 10 inch and finally tried the nexus 7 and now I'm happy I did.

I've had one since the day it was released and I love it still. I don't know what the multitouch issues are, maybe I'm not affected but the GPS is fine on mine too. It finds my location in my house and car. I don't use GPS much on my tablet so thats not a big issue anyways. I've never had it random reboot and no WiFi issues either. I'm rooted with TWRP recovery, but stock OS.

Sorry, None of that makes any sense to me....I don't get what you're at.
I personally have not been having any problems. I highly recommend it.
Buy it locally. Then if you do get a bad one, you can just take it back.
I received mine a few days ago from the $199 sale on eBay and mine has the touchscreen issue. I contacted the seller for an exchange but they said they can only offer a refund at this time. I'm not against flashing the zips that people say can fix the issue, but it's a matter of principle. If I'm going to spend money to buy a brand new product, why should I get a defective product and try to fix it myself? Make the manufacturer deal with the issue, send it back. Which is what I am going to have to do.
For those who does NOT have an issue, did you buy it recently or during the first 60 days of launch date?
I am trying to figure out if Google has at least recognized the issue AND fix it in the next batch of production..
---------- Post added at 11:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:38 AM ----------
I went to Google Product forums and there are tons of people having this problem:

Although some reported they don't have the issue, it is a BIG GAMBLE for me and quite a hassle. If I have to keep returning it 2-3 times, it'll give me more headache....
Man.. I am on the fence now.. I don't want to plunk down $400 (N7 LTE) for soemthing that I have to keep returning..

I've had 4. 1 for myself, for the rest of the family. They're all from early manufacturer dates and they work fine.
Honestly I'd go for it, typically the people who have problems will always be the loudest.

Yeah, the one that had the problem are the loudest. But when I bought my N7 2012, I had issue too and had to return it. Although I only have to exchange it one time, but it's hassle. Send it back, wait, Google received it, wait, Google send it, wait. I am an impatient Gadgeteer!

I bought one brand new recently from Amazon, came with ICS. You can't buy the GNex from the google store in the UK, only the Nexus 7. It's a superb phone; I've had a GS2, Motorola Defy, iPhone, Galaxy Note and this is SO much better than all of them. It's all the great bits of Android with the simplicity and clean look of iOS (but it actually does stuff). I quite liked what Motorola did with Android almost better than Samsung but there's a few good bits on touchwiz. There's no doubt in my mind though that plain Android is LOADS better.
I wish some other manufacturers offered pure Android phones. WHy don't they? I don't particularly want to root my phone and install custom firmware and I really like the GNex but it'd be nice to have a choice of handset...I feel like from now on if I want to stick with neutral Android (which I do!) I'll only ever have 1 choice of phone! Why can't HTC, Motorola or Asus make a neutral Android phone?
Yes
I bought mine just a few days ago, owned a SII but wanted pure Android the Nexus
is fast and sleek with JB glad i bought it.

Probably be a while before they come with JB. They're not huge sellers (I see people with S2s and S3s every time I go out in London but actually have never seen anybody with a Nexus) and it's doubtful that Google would open all the boxes to upgrade them...
I just got mine from the play store the other day. as others have stated came with ICS and was immediately able to upgrade to JB. performance is very good, although first thing I did was install CNA 3.5 and franco nightly kernel
I bought mine last week from the Play store, which stated that it comes with JB. The unit arrived Wednesday and had ICS. It immediately began downloading the JB update. A little irritating that they do that, but eh, it was over soon enough.

Petty to complain about paying $350 for something and finding out it wasn't what you paid for? Most people would complain if that's what they got on a $5 purchase...
Nonetheless, it's not a "I'm going to call Google and complain" type of complaint. It's more of a "buyer beware" issue. It's good to give the market feedback so people know what they can possibly expect.

Whether an ota or not its the same jb. It was what you paid for a gnex that is running the latest jb available from the carrier. There is nothing for a buyer to beware about. Jb capable doesn't mean preloaded. Should a waited a few weeks or a month longer it would be preloaded once old stock sells. Just to be clear I would be the first to complain if it said that and there was no ota.

There's absolutely a Buyer Beware issue. You (and many others on here) probably have reliable, fast internet. I don't. I, unfortunately, live in a very rural area with unreliable dialup. I tried a few times to update via an internet connection share, but it kept failing. Since I didn't want to load all my work onto it without first updating, I drove 35 miles to the nearest free wifi spot and sat for an hour to get it. All said and done, I'm out several hours, plus about $15 in fuel, and an evening doing that when I could have spent it doing any number of more meaningful things.
Now you may think "who cares?" Anyone else in the same situation, of course. Which is why I posted that information in a forum where someone had asked for our experiences. Because, to someone in my situation, that's pretty useful information.
I'm sorry I don't happen to be exactly like you. Everyone is different, and just because it is no big deal to you doesn't mean it's not a big deal to anyone else. I downplayed all that in my original post because it wasn't really relevant. It's enough to tell others "It doesn't come preloaded with JB the way they advertise it" or some such message.
---------- Post added at 07:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:22 PM ----------
I should probably add that they don't advertise it "JB ready" as you say, but rather (from the website):
OS
Jelly Bean (Android 4.1)
That's from the specs on the phone. Not "soon to be 4.1 with a minor update." Again, I think it's entirely okay to dislike lies in advertising.

Soon enough, or 35 mile drive and an hour wait? Are you just annoyed somebody disagreed with you so decided to make up a little story to make your complaint more valid?
Anyway, if you can't even download a 100MB update what's the point in having a smartphone anyway...do you have to drive another 35 miles every time there's a 10MB maps update? Sometimes where you live precludes you from having the latest technology. That's just how it is. My Dad can't get fast enough internet to stream Lovefilm or Netflix, but he just deals with it, he doesn't buy a Google TV box then start complaining about it.
There should be no buyer beware on this. Nobody thinks that as soon as software is released you'll immediately get it on all the sealed brand new units. It's a BIT dodgy to actually say 'it has JB on it right now' when it doesn't, but 'have JB' and 'will DL JB soon as you turn it on and connect'...is that really that much different? I get what you're saying but when you buy a brand new Windows 7 laptop you have to install updates as soon as you turn it on...not quite the same but I think you're being pedantic.
And no...I have no home internet or 4g I downloaded my ota over 3g.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. What I really wanted to know was if the newer ones available from the play store came preinstalled with JB. Guess not.
Furthermore, I also wanted to know if any of you people noticed THESE issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1394358
Current 32Gb owners feel free to aviod this topic if you wish, I know you're answer will contain bias
Multitouch issues, GPS issues, random reboots. All making headlines in the tech media. When I see this I have to ask myself do I REALLY want to entrust this company with the higher priced model? I mean it's $40 ok I get it. But when it comes to customer satisfaction and not wanting to get burned you have to draw the line somewhere.
No matter what, you're not going to get burned.
They have a 1 year warranty.
The extra memory, given non expandable storage just makes sense.
If your that concerned about quality control, why buy it in the first place ?
Personally in going for more memory, because I think I may need it.
Also yeah, warranty is included (and you can always flash stock)

Just like The_Zodiac said. If you are that concerned, why buy it? You're not buying a faulty tablet. You're buying a tablet that has a possibility of being faulty. Let's just say that there is something wrong, why wouldn't you just exchange it for a new one?

No, I wouldn't trust this thing if it were given to me for free. Like most of you, I'm on my second one. Some of you are even on your third or fourth one. At that point, why not just return the thing for good or deal with the issues? You shouldn't have to return a tablet this many times in order to get a properly functioning one. This is absolutely unacceptable.
I'm worried about quality control because bad quality control shouldn't exist on such a large scale with these tablets. ASUS has had plenty of time to make a tablet properly. From their own Transformers to their other tablets all the way to the first gen Nexus 7. All of them have problems and it's annoying because you'd think after making so many, you'd figure out how to do it right, or at least bring the problem rate down low enough.
You pretty much of a 75% chance of getting a tablet with some issue that manifests itself only after you really start using the damn thing.
Come on Google, get Samsung on this.
Still on my first 32gb, no problems at all. No multi touch issues, no reboots, no dead pixels. I think one of the big problems is that you only hear the bad stuff, you don't hear from the satisfied customers.

This is the problem with these forums.. people come here to complain but don't post when they are satisfied with the product.. as such every little problem is blown out of proportion.. I have this tablet for the past 5 days and yet to face any problems.. All in all highly satisfied with my purchase.. 32 GB is a good option if you keep a lot of media or a heavy gamer.. otherwise 16 gb is good enough ..
First and foremost there is no product released till date that doesn't have some problems... if you are worried about it that you might get a faulty product then you should not buy any electronic item as there is a negligible chance that it may be faulty..
So, if you really want enjoy the nexus experience trust your gut and go ahead.. you will never be able to understand whether you will get a good product or a bad one by asking these questions in a forum

I have run it though all of the faults my original nexus 7 had like the flickering screen at low brightness etc etc and its not given me one single problem.
I say if you have a 16GB or God forbid the 8GB 1st gen like I pre ordered GET THE 32! I did and I love it.
Rooted it and put TWRP on it as soon as I got home running the Cyanogen nighties now.
I have no problem here. Work flawlessly. :good:
We have 2 of these 2013 32GB N7s at home.
None of them have shown any of the issues mentioned.
GPS works flawlessly on both of them(use mine daily driving around Houston)
Screen had been impeccable - no light bleed, no dead pixels, no multi-touch issues.
Having been burned before by ASUS on the Prime and disappointed by the Infinity, I bought this with a very critical eye on everything hardware related. That's why I skipped on the first N7. If there was just an iota of something wrong with the unit I have, it would have been returned in a heart beat.
I ended up buying a second one for the rest of the family. This one's mine
Glad to see ASUS finally step up...and hope it lasts longer than a device life-cycle.

I do have the GPS issue and a reboot usually fixes it, at may or may not stop working the rest of the trip.
The touchscreen grounding issues is annoying. If it laying on a table or mounted in my car it touch screen may become unresponsive at times. Picking it up in my hands and it seem to work fine. This issues are annoying, but I'm still keeping my tablet.

Same here. On my first 32GB model that I bought from my local Best Buy 2 days before the "official" release date. No issues whatsoever with mine! I completely agree that happy customers don't get on the Web to praise the tablet for working good, where as unhappy customers do get on the Web to discuss the issues that they're having! Also, I don't know of a single electronic device that doesn't have some issues with some of the products that made their way to the general public's hands! I simply don't think it's possible to have 100% perfect Quality Control for any company...

Isn't it unfortunate how some people just assume that if they're having a problem then everyone MUST be having the same exact problem! Lol
Anyway.
OP, your question should have been - Do you trust this tablet enough to spend ANY money on it. If you don't trust the device then you shouldn't spend a dime on it! As others have already said, if you're willing to spend $230 for the 16GB model, then spending $270 for the 32GB model is a no-brainer on a device that doesn't have removable storage, IF you need the storage. If you're willing to spend $230 for it, then $40 more isn't a problem. Plus you do get a 1 year manufacturer warranty with the device, so that will take care of natural issue if by chance you do have one. If you have the option to buy at a local store, then I think that is your best choice.
What I'm trying to say is this - You SHOULD NOT be contemplating the $40 difference in storage options based on trust. You SHOULD be contemplating making the purchase at all if you're concerned about it.
That said, I have ZERO issues with mine and couldn't be happier! I already have a 10" tablet and a 5.5" phone, but this 7" tablet fits nicely in between and serves it's on purposes for different scenarios. I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!

Exact same thing here (GPS every now and then... been a few days now) and unresponsive multi when ungrounded. But I have to believe Asus/Google will swap it out f they decide it's not a software thing.
If you are somewhere where a swap would e an issue though, I don't know OP. Check it out thoroughly before taking it too far
My first device had uneven gaps on the bezels. My 2nd one has been flawless. I have had no issues at all.
I've been reading up on all the possible issues so far and the list goes on and on. Is it worth the risk? From random reboots, to even wifi range.
IMO, I think it is worth the risk. I think all the problems are addressable and will eventually be solved either by ASUS/Google or our intrepid developers here. It is really an amazing piece of hardware. It is just going through some teething pains at the moment.
Also, even if you don't like it and even if you exceed the take-back period, I think you would be able to sell it for enough to come close to recovering your cost, so the risk is minimal either way.

No problem with mine. Poor iPad is gettin dusty though!
No need to worry. I would recommend only buying the tablet from a place that will allow you to easily exchange it. In case you get a unit with dust under the screen or light bleed. I personally had to go through 4 until I had gotten a perfect unit. Hopefully they have worked out the kinks with the new batches shipping out. Just note a good amount of tablet manufacturers, not just Asus, seem to skimp on the quality.
I am really happy with my tablet! It is everything that I need it to be for the price.
Bought mine from Amazon on release day and it's had no issues. I wouldn't be worried...remember that usually the only people to speak up are ones that are having problems. Most people aren't going to come to a forum just to post that their device is working as it should.

Agreed. Mine is working great... although my first unit did have faulty speakers... Returned it and exchanged at BB no problem. So not really much to worry about as the return/exchange policies at most reputable places are very good.
From what I've read GPS and multi touch issues might be fixed as long as they're not hardware related. It's very much possible that there are different hardware combinations for different batches of the n7.
How do I know if my unit has a wifi problem out of the box? I live in the Philippines so it's a long way from the US if I have to return it lol! But aside from the note 10.1 2013, there arent really any alternatives to good high end android tablets.
I ordered one a few days ago. But since I ordered it I started reading about all the issues it has.
Is it really THAT bad? Now I'm thinking of selling it as soon as it arrives and getting an HTC One A9 =/
I really thought nexus phone were supposed to be the best of android.

No, it is a great phone, period. And a fantastic phone given the (U.S.) price.
The folks with problems will always be more vocal than the folks who don't have problems. But, for example, check out the heavy upvoting on reddit when people post that they are not having problems. There is a large (but mostly silent) majority of folks who are simply enjoying their phone and have no reason to post to internet forums looking for advice.
Also, note that what appear to be the two most common issues (slowdown/lag after long periods of uptime, and battery issues) also crop up in the 6P forums. I don't know why some people have these issues and some (like me) don't, but I am not convinced that they are phone-specific even when they do occur.

I do not have an issue when opening the app. Also, the stock app was just updated in the play store and I think I have seen some reports of people commenting favorably on the update.
In the interests of full disclosure, I should say that I am not a heavy camera user (though I do take pictures). I use my 5X mostly for e-mail, texts, voice calls, playing/listening to music, web browsing, and navigation.

Never read about issues before you get the phone. I got one a couple days ago and it is just as good as my Nexus 5. No screen issues as all. The device is physically perfect. However, if you go read about all of the stuff people have issues with you start dissecting your device and finding problems you normally wouldn't have noticed or that aren't real problems anyway. I bet if you went to the HTC A9 forum you'd find all sorts of threads with people reporting issues. People tend to report negative issues vs reporting on the positive.
Every new phone has issues. Only people who have something to complain about are going to be vocal. There are many, many happy users out there who haven't made a peep about their phones at all.
I've had my N5x for over a week now and am very happy with it. No issues, except for the very tight and stiff headphone jack.
Thanks for the replies guys
Same here, zero issues have been noticed by myself.

I found the camera lag seems to be related to AUTO HDR+. Camera seldom lags now after I just leave HDR+ off or on, instead of using auto.

No issues opening the camera here. It opens faster than the Nexus 5 camera.
Most of the issues people have are related to one of the apps or services they installed. Being a new version of Android with new features that need to be coded in (permission sets and doze) means there are lots of apps that can have incompatibility issues at this time.
Folks tend not look to their apps and services for their issues even though they're the cause of 99% of them. Instead they instantly blame the hardware for software problems.
If it makes you feel any better, I've had my 5x for 3 weeks and haven't encountered any problems. Only real disappointment for me is the speaker. But that's mainly bc I came from the M8. Nothing can really compare to boomsound. 3gb ram would be nice but its not like this phone is laggy with 2 gb or anything

I think you're right about that. I've just left it on and seems just slightly less laggy. Also, could be the updated app a week or so ago. It's not quite as smooth as I would like it but still good to know of that it can be improved.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
had mine a few days now and it's not a bad phone. Battery life is worst than I was expecting and I have an issue with the hall effect sensor locking the screen when I use the magnet dock in my car (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=196357)
No the issues aren't as bad as people make them out to be. I suspect if there was no Nexus 6P, people wouldn't be complaining about the 5X so much. The phone is a solid performer. I'm not sure why some are giving this device a hard time.

I have zero issues, except for the cheap back plastic picking up stains. What bad issues are you talking about?
And I agree that people who complain about lag have some app messing up their phone. I have always used System Panel Pro to diagnose stuff like that. Without it, I would have thought every phone I ever owned had problems. With it, I almost always see some app stuck in a process using up cpu and making things lag. Kill it, problem goes away.
Overall I'm pretty happy. Coming from a Nexus 5 the Nexus 5X is an improvement(although not HUGE). The only issue I could really think of is the less than impressive battery life.
So... My Nexus 5x arrived yesterday... There is a black spot in the camera I think I'm gonna have to trade it for a new one but have no idea of how international returns work xD
Wish me luck

Are you talking about after you take a pic and look at a thumbnail it had the spot? Or in the viewfinder live there is a spot? Have you changed your DPI by chance?

So after months of fighting with this i have finally found out something and narrowed it down some, wifi works flawlessly with my bluetooth enabled yet when disabled it works like crap for some reason, and i always leave bluetooth disabled, is there any sort of log i can send to developers or someone that knows what they are looking at to possibly fix this? im running the latest Ressurection rom right now, and on my 5ghz network at home custom channel set.

This phone is riddled with bugs, and new updates only introduce new ones. It's a piece of crap phone with a piece of crap hardware (zero cool features) and a piece of crap software (zero satisfaction). Just accept it! I've been saying this since I got it 4 months ago. But the vocal minority of crappy fanbois will always try to shut you up. Even though I'm keeping this pos only for Project FI, because I pay $25 a month to have a cell phone through it, I'm seriously considering paying $15 a month more with USC prepaid and getting a phone that I actually LIKE. THE BUGS ARE RUINING a decent phone but underwhelming phone. And Google does nothing to fix this.
Well it's on 2.4ghz band also workaround
So I was experiencing this problem on the 2.4ghz band as well and found a workaround is to enable Bluetooth then connect to the network and then disabled Bluetooth and it works well after that...Man I bought this phone for the unlocked bootloader and superior gaming performance. Pretty overwhelmed with the bugs Android Or looks promising though.

Hello,
You could try to log your activity with a logcat.
How to make a logcat: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=Logcat
Reproduce the issue while logging and once you finish, stop the logcat and send the file to the dev and ask him to take a look... :good:
Good luck...
thanks will try because my little enable disable bluetooth trick isnt working anymore, now i have to constantly leave it on for it to work good
has anyone else experienced this problem?

OP asked for help logging his issue. If at least you read his post you would have known this... You are just here doing what you do in any other thread you opened. Crying that your phone is buggy and crap. Get it replaced or sell it and move on. Problem solved.

Did you already log your issue and report it to your ROM developer?
Also, have you tried switching ROM and reproduce the issue? Just TWRP backup everything and try another ROM. At least you'll know if it's an Android or ROM specific problem. Resurrection Remix is based on a lot of different sources + their own code.
So... Try latest 7.1.2 factory image and try reproducing your issue. If it is persistent, at least you'll know it's an Android bug. If it's solved, then a ROM issue... :good:
Good luck...

I know that no one like complainers but complainers have a reason to complain - in this particular case, incessant bugs from a company who promised frequent updates, only to be thwarted by bugs introduced by their Team B bug hunters.
What you don't have is a reason to complain about complainers. That's just petty and unproductive. Yeah, sure - you love this phone because you bought it for almost $1000, but that doesn't mean that it's perfect. Be a man and stop complaining! Hypocrite.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you here. If you didn't understand yet, my only complain is:
You provided no help to the OP. Just saying this phone this, this phone that, blah blah...
Did it help him resolving the issue? Not at all. This thread is not a debate, if you don't have anything relevant to help the OP, your posts are just useless.

I got the phone for half the price on eBay.de, since Google decided not to sell Pixel devices in France. At least I saved 400 bucks. Still good for a non perfect device.

So you confirm latest 7.1.2 public release doesn't fix your issue...? Personally, I don't have this bug. As far as I remember, I haven't seen the same issue yet.
Since you're on stock firmware, contact Google and report your issue. If it can't be fixed, ask a replacement asap.

Wow, stop crying and sell your damn phone to me. I'll give you $150 since it's such a piece of crap. I've yet to experience 1 bug with this phone, especially the ones you've stated. My wife would love to have your phone, so sell me yours on Swappa or eBay so you can get ready for that crud S8 from Sammy.
