[Solved] AOKP unrooted my GSIII? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Android: 4.3.1
AOKP: Build 10/23/2013. D2ATT
I rooted my AT&T GSIII with Causual on a Mac, and it rooted great. I bought Odin Mobile for the device, downloaded the latest version or AOKP for the AT&T Galaxy S III, and flashed the ROM. Upon booting, the screen was stuck at "Sawgger Activated", so I reset and cleared the cache via recovery mode. It worked, and the device bolted up and I could do everything, but when I try to go into any app that requires "root access" a screen pops up that says the device is not rooted. When I open Superuser, it says binaries are not installed, and it cannot download them.
Broke rule #1 of rooting and ROMing, and didn't make a backup, which I am regretting right now.
How do I get root access get back, or revert to stock?
I've rooted and romed before, put my phone on CyanogenMOD, but had to take it in to at&t, so I had to restore to stock.
Thanks in advance for the help

For those interested in the solution that I somehow didn't see before (I was also sure if I fixed the SU binary, it would fix it)
Rerooting it in Casual on Mac didn't work, I had to go over to my friends and use his Windows computer. I downloaded Causal, loaded Casual into Odin, put my phone into download mode, and it rooted successfully. I was able to use AOPK as it was intended.
I then restored to factory, installed goomanager, installed twrp, backed up my ROM, flashed PAC-Man milestone and gapps 4.3 (10/7/2013), but TWRP gave me an error when it tried to flash the PAC-Man milestone (yes the milestone was for the AT&T GSIII). I then downloaded the latest PAC-Man nightly (10/29/2013) and flashed that and gapps through TWRP. It worked, but some things kept force qutting, including the UI. I factory reset, booted up, and now I have PAC-Man working on my GSIII, fully rooted.

That sucks. Has happened to me but I could boot into recovery. Did you try downloading Supersu from the Play store? That might install the binaries you need.
You wiped cache using recovery mode? You mean the stock recovery or do you have CMW/TWRP installed?

I can't install the play store. I can't flash any zips because it says I'm not rooted. I wiped cache using stock, can't install cmw/twrp

Can you use odin to get a custom recovery first, then flash supersu?

Sorry to say, but this seems a bit bleak. It seems like your best choice would be to Odin back to stock and if you're up to it, re-root and try again.

[Q] Rooted, but not rooted? Need help...

Ive searched the similar thread suggestions and my issue seems to be different...
**BACKSTORY** So I have the sgh-I317...I rooted it a while back and had JellyBEANSTALK 4.2.2 running on it for a while...phone started randomly not waking up from being locked every once in a while so I flashed back to my stock JB 4.1.2 image i had made and flashed the counter so i could take it in to ATT...since flashing back to 4.1.2 I have not had that issue so i am assuming it was something with the ROM
**PRESENT TIME** I decided I wanted to re-root and try CleanROM out...so I got all the necessary stuff I needed (correct drivers and CF Auto Root), followed directions to a T, everything passed, phone rebooted, etc. When i try and use root checker, it just 'searches'...I dont get a 'Not rooted' message or anything...tried installing titanium backup pro root; it installs but when i open it it just says its looking for root access and stays on that screen...ALSO, i do not have SuperSU in my applications but if I go into the Application Manager, SuperSU is there...I also have cwm recovery as well...so its like it partially rooted? t mobile galaxy s4 totaly bricked

I tied to flash the pac-man 4.2.2 ROM to my rooted s4. It worked but all the Google apps did not come with it... so I downloaded an app package off of GooManeger. Anyway after reboot it was obvious the app package was not compatible. Wiped phone, then no ROM, no OS, no nothing. Device doesn't get past initial boot screen. I can get into download and recovery mode. Not really sure how to download anything on my phone right now as my computer doesn't recognize it anymore. My recovery mode is TeamWin. I'm sure there's more you want to know so please ask and I appreciate your help.

You need to start from scratch using ODIN and flash the stock/non rooted Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S4 M919 firmware.
(using download mode in the phone)
Here is the download link: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/213469534/9ff06bd/M919UVUAMDL_M919TMBAMDL_TMB.zip.html
After the odin flash you will need to root the phone unless you want to keep it stock.
Good luck!

You may have wiped the /system folder which may explain why your phone is stuck on the booting sequence. As the poster said above, use Odin to flash the stock MDL and root again. As far as your computer not recognizing it. Put the phone into download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power), plug the phone into a different USB port (and let the drivers install if it's the first time you're plugging your phone in that port for Windows users), and then open up Odin and flash the stock firmware from there. Let us know if Odin recognizes your phone.
If you can still get into download mode and recovery, you are NOT totally bricked.

Recovery is not working
Got phone back to normal, then accomplished root access. Downloaded clock work and now recovery mode does not work. I downloaded CW from hot file. I was sure to download the right one for my phone... anyway I cant factory reset at the moment, it just sticks at recovery boot screen. What I'm trying to accomplish is download CW, pacman 4.3 ROM, and Gapps.

Try Philz CWM flash via Odin

Odin back to stock and re-root. IIRC, CWM should be available from the Play store where you can then open the app and install/update the libraries. Didn't Pacman ROM include CWM?
Thank you guys for the advice. Super usefull
I was under the impression I needed to download a download a recovery mod first. Where is the best place to get my ROMs? I'm real interested in the pacman. I extracted the pacman files but it wont plug into the PDA in Odin. Also MD5 hash checker is something I've never heard of..

You need to have a working custom recovery first. Like Skipjacks stated, you flash ROM in the custom recovery.
I think you should start from the beginning and take it step by step.
I assumed at this point you're rooted on the stock ROM with stock recovery?
If not lets get to that stage and we can go from there.
-Stock ROM rooted with stock recovery
-Flash custom recovery
-Nandroid backup
-Flash custom ROM<<You are here

Derp moment. CWM != ROM Mgr. :silly: Thanks for the clarification.
I did it all with exception of flashing the ROM. Every time I try to flash the pacman 4.3 it fails. Any suggestions on how to fix that or should I turn my attention so a different ROM. I'm going for optimization and complete customization, without needing a launcher. Or maybe a suggested ave to customize touch wiz to the fullest.

[Q] Problems with ROM flashings (i9195)

Hello everybody,
I have a quite stressful situation with my s4 mini right now and I need your expertise.
It goes like this:
I was perfectly happy with my stock rom but for some reason I got this crazy idea of rooting and installing a custom rom.
So I followed the steps on this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980
After CWM was installed and before the phone was rooted, I made a complete backup via CWM (Backup1) and then installed the rootkit (as mentioned on the above post). After successfully rooting it I made another backup (Backup2), you know, just in case
Then I followed the instructions on the CyanogenMod wiki (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_serranoltexx#Installing_CyanogenMod_from_recovery) and installed it on my phone. It worked perfectly and I had CyanogenMod installed. But after playing around with it a bit, I realized that I didn't like it that much for various reasons. So I decided to go back to my original ROM. So I restarted in recovery mode and restored Backup2. Well this is where the problems start
The phone would start but once it boot up everything kept crushing. I kept getting messages every 10 seconds that gapps is not responding and nova launcher is not responding and the play store is not responding, etc. And in general you couldn't use it. So I tried once again restarting in recovery mode and restored Backup1. But again the same thing. Everything kept crushing.
What I want now is to have my original stock rom rooted. Problem is, I don't know where to find it. All I found was this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2375527&highlight=9195 but the download links don't work. Plus I don't know what my firmware's code is (eg I9195XXUAMF5)
Can anyone help?
PS. I live in Denmark and I bought here. Also the phone is the i9195 model with 8gb.
s4 mini
Go to CWM and wipe it or try to fix permissions

Thanks! That helped a lot.
So now I downloaded and successfully flashed what Sammobile.com suggests is my stock firmware.
I followed again the procedure to root my phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980) but although superSU is installed, I don't think I have root access.
What happens is that first of all superSU says that it needs to update the binary but it when I click "continue" it fails to install. Then I get a security warning that superSU is trying to access protected files and that it was blocked. SuperSU asked me if I want to disable KNOX. I said yes so I don't get those messages anymore. But still superSU can't update.
The other thing is that the apps don't actually have root privilages. For example, when I try to enable root on ES File Explorer, I get the prompt to grant root access, and I select grant. But I still can't open specific folders in the file system. For example the /data folder is shown completely empty.
Also other apps don't behave like rooted.
Any thoughts??

[Q] I747 Galaxy S3 Clockworkmod Recovery Problem

Ok guys I am a noob (also new to these forums) and I'm having a lot of trouble with my phone. The other day, I rooted my phone using towelroot and confirmed it using root checker. then, I downloaded ROM manager as advised by a friend. i followed the instructions and installed Clockworkmod Recovery onto my AT&T Galaxy S3. Feeling I was finally ready to install a ROM, i tried to download Cyanogenmod 10.3.1 only to have it be "downloading" for over 14 hours without it completing. From there, i did some research and decided to utilize the Cyanogenmod Installer. it seemed to work perfectly, even showing the cyanogenmod logo under when my devicec turned on, until it told me to reboot my device. i entered clockworkmod recovery mode to officially reboot it. when i selected "reboot system now" it said "Root access possibly lost. Fix?". i was given the options to say "No" and "Yes - Fix root (/system/xbin/su). no matter which one i try, my phone boots to the stock touchwiz OS. I have installed and reinstalled both superuser, superSU, and ROM manager to no success. What am i doing wrong?
Try flashing Philz Touch via Odin and use that to flash a custom ROM.
From what I recall, CM ROMs are already rooted.

CM is already rooted? What does that mean? I have a feeling that I will be unable to flash any ROMs due to my "possible loss of root access." Thank you for your patience as I am a noob and am very stressed out as this is my only phone.
I see two areas that are potential problems for flashing that rom. If it took 14 hours to download, its highly likely a corrupted download. But also, you may be on too new firmware. Cm uses asserts in the updater-script to check that you have the right base firmware/bootloader build. They dont update this so when newer firmware is released it will no longer flash because the script doesn't see it as allowed.
Anytime you have issues flashing something in recovery, you should copy the recovery log to sd. This will tell you what happened. I suspect it simply didn't flash, but without the log, theres no way we can tell what happened.
Also, you do not need to be rooted to flash anything from recovery. Just flash the recovery, then flash a rom from there. Nearly all roms you will ever see are already rooted. Non rooted roms are very rare and are generally only used as an alternate way to revert to stock.
I dont use cwm, but if im not mistaken, it seems to always ask to fix root. I dont know why, but I see people ask about it frequently.
I use TWRP, so try that, or philz as suggested by audit13. Just watch the flash progress for any errors and copy the log.

Confirmed Rooted, Can't flash any roms. All say corrupt.

I rooted the phone 3 times, with and without the toolkit. It says successful each time and I can use Titanium backup. I tried to de-knox (wasn't told to do so) but it says it can't find root. Root checker says I'm rooted and I have TWRP.
What in the world could I have done wrong.

So the first thing I noticed is, you listed the bold above. That means the rom is flashed? Thats my rom. Its stock and you even show the correct kernel. (although I would update to a newer one). Next thing is, after you download use an MD5 checker and compare to the rom thread or AFH next time. This will indicate if there are issues with the download or the file itself after moving it. Report back for us so we can proceed to help you further
Have you tried full unroot through SuperSU app and reflash latest SuperSU via recovery ?
OK. So I completely bricked the phone trying to get this to work.
I was able to download the ORIGINAL stock unrooted rom.
I rooted it again after getting it back up. I tried to flash a couple of ROMS, but TWRP just continues to reset back to TWRP menu when I flash. So I changed to Philz. Aborts each time
It sounds to me like the best plan at this point would be to Odin back to stock and start over. Something went wrong somewhere!
Yeah. If you can get into download mode then you didn't brick. Download the stock tar and try again.
I already restored it back to stock. I've done this 3x now. I'm stock again now, but each time I use the toolkit and reboot, when I try to flash ANY rom, it says failed or corrupt.
I've tried philz and TWRP. Both are giving the same results
I've rooted several phones and no issue. I was able to install one earlier before I bricked the first time, but the radio/data kept having issues even after I did the fix so I tried another rom, but to no avail.

Well, I just tried that also with the newest TWRP 2.8.4.0 and it didn't take through ODIN. The guy fell over when I went to see it as the the phone tried to do the update.
I used ODIN to download Philz and it took.
I then tried to flash Liquid Smooth and it aborted saying it can't open /storage/sdcard1/LS-LP-v4.0-2015-01-16- liquid_trltespr.zip (bad)
The I tried to /storage/sdcard1/cm-12-20150116-UNOFFICIAL-trltespr.zip (bad) and it aborted again

Now that none of these options worked (for some strange reason), I went back to the toolkit and re-rooted the phone and got rid of knox, added busybox, etc... Now I AM rooted again, but none of the roms will install.
I have a rooted phone that can't flash.
I tried all of the roms that I downloaded to my sd card, but none seem to work.
Even though I have a new 128 gb sandisc ultra, is it possible that I have a bad card??
I'm just baffled. I've been rooting phones for years, but this one is strange.
Is there a way to use odin to flash a rom?? I know it would have to be a tar file
Definitely yes... Put the rom on the internal memory and you will be good to go!

Unless your card is bad (or your drivers on your pc) the problems you are experiencing are still unfortunately most likely internet connection or user related errors. You don't detail your steps carefully. This is important in this situation.
Try downloading a ROM to your computer and transfer it to the internal storage. Also, how are you using philz recovery, I thought only twrp worked for our phone. Download the right recovery here, flash with Odin in PDA slot from download mode. http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/266
