Dear All
I have a problem with my Xperia Play that I have tried to search all over xda and the internet, but somehow cannot find a solution. I am a newbie but have done very basic stuff with a few Xperia phones before - rooting, unlocking bootloader, installing CWM, and installing a custom rom or an official rom that is not yet released in my country. I have never encountered any out of the ordinary situations and usually just followed tutorials and got my way around until now. Your help will be greatly appreciated with this slightly complex (for me) case!
I have a Xperia Play r800a that had Android 2.3.3 which was purchased in USA through AT&T and officially unlocked after obtaining the code from the AT&T support team. When I moved to India however, the phone did not get a signal all the time. I'm no expert, but somehow, I managed to root it, unlock the bootloader, and flash an official Sony Ericsson stock R800i 2.3.4 firmware on it - build 4.0.2.A.62. All was well.
Now, I would like to flash CyanogenMod 9 on it which wasn't available at the earlier time for Xperia Play phones. First step I thought would be to root the phone, but since it is .62 build, I have tried various methods but just cannot get it to happen! I did unlock the bootloader anyway using fastboot and the instructions on the Sony website (however I think the bootloader was already unlocked so nothing changed). Now I don't know whether to treat my phone as a r800a or r800i, and have run out of ideas for how to root it to install CWM recovery to be able to flash the cyanogenmod 9 firmware on it, or if there is any other way that I can do this.
When I search on xda or on google, I find situations that are close to mine but am not sure if I can follow the same methods or partially follow steps from 2-3 different tutorials, because of the r800a/i confusion...
I know this sounds very noob but please help! Thank you!!
Incase it helps my phone shows the following info -
Model number: R800i
Android version: 2.3.4
Baseband version: 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-23028D-64
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-perf
[email protected] #1
Build number: 4.0.2.A.0.62
Just flash a custom kernel...flash superuser...then u are rooted..
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
For rooting .62 firmware use eroot
But that is only for rooting stock firmware and have nothing to do with flashing CM.
To be able to flash CM, you need to flash kernel that is compatible with CM and have recovery in it. On xperia models, kernel and recovery is on same partition, so nowdays when we say "custom kernel" it means custom kernel + recovery.
Now, since you have unlocked bootloader, there is no problem for you to flash custom kernel.
Just download flashtool, install drivers for fastboot and flash mode from flashtool folder and start flashtool
For flashing kernel, all you have to do is choose fastboot mode (power off, hold search button and connect phone to pc) in flashtool (lighting icon), choose kernel (img) file from pc and it will be flashed
Some r800a model don't have fastboot mode after unlocking bootloader but you can still flash custom kernel in flash mode (power of phone, hold back button and connect to pc), choose flash mode from flashtool and select kernel in ftf format
Done! Now unplug phone, start and when it vibrate keep pressing volume up/down/back button (button is specific to each kernel - read in kernel thread which one)
Best place to start searching (CM) roms and kernels is at Xperia Play Index - ROM'S, FIRMWARE, KERNEL'S, GUIDE'S, THEMES, MOD'S
and if you are having trouble with fastboot mode, kernels in ftf format can be found at [Depository]FTF Kernels
Also, check Cyanlabs ROM Kitchen & Windows Helper Application thread, maybe that one is best for you (it doesn't use flashtool, and have automated process of flashing kernels/roms)
Wow...didn't know that was all I had to do...thank you decualion77, and thanks Bakisha for the steps!
Also, I will check out Cyanlabs it looks pretty cool
You have both solved my problem that I just couldn't figure out, thanks again!

Hello Guys !
I wanna try some custom ROM so before doing that want to backup my Kernel & ROM. If anything gone wrong so I can revert back to original ROM.
My Cell details:

Android Version 2.3.4
Baseband Version -64
Build number

Please someone guide me....
Thanks in advance...
If your bootloader's locked then you can't back up. You can only reload(repair)it from PC companion.

Thanks sinkster !
Ok done unlocked bootloader.
Then advice the further steps...
XPERIA CWM AUTO INSTALLER
download this app and install CWM recovery on ur phone...
Then reboot ur phone into recovery mode...
TO DO THIS, LONG PRESS BACK BUTTON WHILE THE PHONE RE-BOOTS
(OR)
KEEP TAPPING VOLUME DOWN BUTTON...
After it boots into recovery, go to BACKUP & RESTORE and Select Backup...
This will create a NANDROID BACKUP on your phone exactly as it is...including apps n contacts n all other data..
you can find it in SDCARD/Clockworkmod/Backup/
Good day...
If you wanted to take a backup without installing CWM you can use fastboot to boot (not flash) a kernel that has CWM built in.
thanks amulbaby
I will try and get back here with comment ...
EDIT:
I tried that steps but it will works only on rooted phone ..., can not enter in to recovery mode by pressing any key, it normally boots up and appear home ...

Why don't you root it with flashtool then?
But for that u wud have to downgrade to .42, with flashtool before rooting
Hey I am also wondering about this. I have lt15i flashed with Official .562, locked bootloader and CWM installed via flashtool.
Which ICS roms will work with official .562 and locked bootloader? I have been searching all morning but not a lot of updates regarding this since the official .562 release.

Here is the point I was looking for these alternative . . .
I have STOCK ROM with 4.0.2.a.0.62, actually I want to backup these stuff, I read about that downgrading via flashtool and root, if I flashed via flashtool that STOCK ROM will wipe...
Anyway here what I did to make a copy of my stock firmware & upgraded to ICS firmware & rooted.
Repaired my phone using Sony update service to download and backup STOCK firmware
Flashed with flashtool official firmware LT18i 4.1.A.0.562 NCB Icecream Sandwich Official
First you need to download a kernel that has cwm built in, I would search for recoveryARC.IMG then you also need fastboot from the SDK.
All you would do is connect your phone I'm fastboot then run in a command prompt fastboot boot recoveryARC.IMG. Your phone would then boot using that kernel and you can enter cwm by pressing the vol down several times. This process wouldn't flash your kernel only load it temporarily.
I would try and find a guide about them but I'm on my phone.
Sorry just noticed you've already done it, congrats enjoy ics.

Thanks bro ...
I already upgraded, anyway I want to know the process, you mentioned here this process wouldn't flash kernel only load it temporarily, I am confused...
Could you describe in details .. ? Actual what happens if we flash recovery img...
Well you can use fastboot to install the kernel which overwrites the previous one, or you can use it boot the kernel which just sends the kernel to the phone which the boots and temporarily uses the kernel. However when the phone next shuts down it will return to normal use.
If you flash a kernel it writes the .IMG to the boot partition. So if I wanted to use a kernel that stayed between reboots I would use 'fastboot flash boot kernelname.IMG'
However if I was running stock I could use recoveryARC.IMG with cwm, and do fastboot boot recoveryARC.IMG then run update.zip as normal. Then all you have to do is reboot, you'll be back to stock but the update would still be installed.
Sorry if it's not cleat, the best I could do on my phone.

Can you please give me details on you did this? It is precisely what I want to do (ie. Backup the stock carrier rom on my Xperia Arc before flashinging an old ROM in order to root it).
Did you use the "repair" option from "Sony PC Companion 2.1>Support Zone>Phone software update>repair phone"?
Or did you use the software from here: http: // w ww(dot)sonymobile(dot)com/gb/tools/update-service/
Can you please tell me the whole procedure on how you did the backup of the STOCK ROM? Thanks!

ROM backup OK; How to take backup of Kernel
I am using Sony Xperia Ray ST18i
used it for a year with stock kernel and ROM
rooted it long ago, but was afraid of custom ROMs
last month I unlocked bootloader, flashed ROM and custom ROM (beanstalk 4.3.075), enjoying it but obviously not so stable like stock
Now if I wish to move back to my stock kernel and ROM
what steps are required.
I suppose
1. flash the stock kernel
2. restore from backed up ROM (I do have nandroid backup of stock ROM)
but how to achieve the step 1, as I learnt nandroid backup doesn't backs up ROM.
My collegue is having same phone still on stock, Can I use his phone somehow to extract kernel. I searched and found a zip to be used through CWM which backs up kernel it was meant for some samsung phone I tried but failed.
Thanks in advance.
Do I need to supply some more information to get help?

CWM is for flashing ROMs. You don't install it, once you've unlocked your bootloader and downloaded your sdk's etc, set up fastboot on your PC to boot custom kernels which contain cwm.
Your phone won't be blank, just user data(not sdcard)will be wiped. Follow the instructions on the SE site, or here.

How to install latest Recovery?
Hi guys. I have just one simply question. I just unlock my bootloader at my ARC S with installed latest Android 4.0.3 4.1.A.0.562. My question is:
How can I install CWM Recovery on it?? I'm asking because all of these tips were written for Android in version 2.3 and I don't want to brick my phone during using wrong guide.
If it's not a problem redirect me to proper Guide and tools.
Thanks
Like I mentioned, CWM isn't installed, as such. No matter what version of android you're running, if you've unlocked the bootloader then, using fastboot, you can boot a kernel that contains CWM.
My LT15i got upgraded to .62 version via OTA and I wanted to downgrade it to .42 to root it safely and easily. Something didn't work out and after flashing the downgrade my phone got bootlooped. I downloaded different official ROMs to go back to, but I can't flash them

Any ideas what can I do? I didn't use fastboot since I'm not sure what should I do with it, just flashtool.
Just keep flashing it or use Update Service to repair it.
There are dozens of generic ROMs.
e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1491066
Use Flashtool repeatedly.. doesn't always work the first time around..
Does the LED indicator change after a while of being plugged in in flash mode? Check this, as I kept having the same issue. I just kept yanking the cable out and plugging it back in and repeating the procedure over and over until it fianlly flashed the kernel for me.
Was using arcknight kernel when i got stuck in bootloop, flashed to stock kernel and repaired over SEUS before unlocking BL and rooting once again using zergrush
Follow these steps.
pre requisites - Rooted/Bootloader unlocked.
1. Download the Flash tool.
2. Download the generic global rom - LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.42 (.ftf) [Search in the forum]
3. Flash the ftf using flash tool. (google how to flash using flash tool. There are numerous threads)
4. Once you successfully installed .42 firmware. [Using flashtool root the mobile using zergrush method. if u want]
5. Install busybox using flash tool.
6. Install x-parts from play store to install the CWM.
That's it.
Let me know if u have any problems.

The problem is, I used to have root and CWM installed, but now I can't enter it, because when I flash the ROM, it gets stuck in certain moment. I'm stuck somewhere between 3 and 4 point, where my flashtool doesn't correctly flash the ROM onto my Lt15i. From this bootloop I can't reach CWM or normal system to enter the google play or something.
I'll keep on trying flashing it, I'll also try to flash it from another computer
Is it possible that flashtool is being blocked by certain application like, I don't know, PC companion?
Additionally, I can't go back to the stock ROM via PC companion or SEUS, because when I'm in flashmode and phone is ready to flash, the PC companion says that my phone is already upgraded and there are no new updates to it, so it can't be upgraded, even tho there is some old flashed ROM inside ( I think PC companion reads the old ROM, that I used to have before bootloop, I believe it was the 4.0~~~~.62 version)

Disable antivirus and run the flash tool with adminstrator. Try to refalsh the .42 firmware.
Try to flash the .42 ftf with old version of flash tool. I saw some cases where with new flash tool, .42 is not flashed successfully.

How ever that tutorial covers 2.3.3, and im running 2.3.2 Stock Rom, also when going to sonymobile and following the steps to unlock the bootloader, itsays to dial *#*#7378423#*#* and check for rooting status, my device dosnt have that displayed ( as a side note, i rooted my deviced almost 2 years ago).
However, I Continued with the sony steps and when dialing *#06# , the cellphone does give me my MEID, i continued with the tutorial, and so far, i got in my mail, my key to unlock my bootloader.
My question is, can i proceed with unlocking my bootloader? i would like to install a custom kernel so i can overclock it, to play games a little more fluid, my current room its a Stock Rom, however ALL the bloatware apps are gone now, my phone just have about 12 apps, and its using 80 megas out of the 300 the xperia has. is this good or i can go better with a custom kernel and a smaller rom?also im from mexico, when doing this im gonna need to reactivate my cellphone or something on the company?

You can unlock your bootloader with flashtool. Doublecheck your unlock code you got from Sony. Make sure you have correct drivers installed. Verizon kept the root status in service menu hidden... But it will work.
Yes it will work but as lordomn said check and make sure all your drivers are good then do it and you should be fine

Yeah, thats easy saying lo, but im particulari new to this.. theres alot of stuff involved, for example, im on 2.3.2 stock rom, i made a revocery image using CWM, and saved it somewhere safe, so here are the questions in order, ( if you can answer them in order would be great ):
1.- im on 2.3.2 stock rom, and i saw a kernel named 2.3.3 stock kernel with overclock, can i flash this with my stock rom and keep my stock rom, or i would need to flash first a 2.3.3 stock rom?
2.- when i want to test a new rom, do i need to flash the kernel first, or the rom?
3.- am i totaly safe with CWM and a nandroid backup?
4.- testing kernel is something safe? i mean can i go back?
5.- if something goes REALLY WRONG, can i flash the stock rom/kernel using flashtool?
6.- i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605631 wich is the stock kernel 2.3.3 overclocked, but im on 2.3.2, can i flash it and stay on 2.3.2 or i need to flash the kernel and then the room, or first the rom and then the kernel?
7.- can i install CWM recovery on all the roms? i pretty much want to be safe, in case something goes wrong, or can i just use FLASHTOOL, to flash the stock firmware / kernel 2.3.2 and start over again?
8.- unlocking bootloader makes the xperia play able to use the flashtool, right? like, whitout unlocked bootloader, how does people flash roms for locked bootladers? using CWM recovery menu, the update .zip function? im pretty confussed right here, like, i unlocked my bootloader, so, i can use flashtool right, thats what unlocking the bootloader its for?

i think you can find the answer to alot of your questions here at FMA's thread it has a very good Q&A.... but anyhow ill answer them to the best of my ability.
1. im not sure as i never messed around with GB but i believe that 2.3.3 kernel will work on 2.3.2, but why would you want to stay on 2.3.2 when 2.3.3 has better performance?
2. Yes always flash the kernel first then the rom.
3. A Nandroid backup does not back-up the kernel as the partion its on CWM cant see... so if you get a faulty kernel flash or you flash a wrong kernel just use flashtool to get a working one.
4.yes you can always go back from flashing a kernel and yes its pretty much safe.
5. yes you can always flash with flashtool unless for whatever reason you damage the bootloader or the Trim Area then you have to seek for more advanced methods to recover the phone, dont worry tho if you dont accept an official update after unlocking the bootloader you will be fine.
6.i would be safe and upgrade to 2.3.3 using a .ftf so that you dont have any headaches.
7. yes you can flash CWM on all roms, however CWM is not part of the rom but the kernel and almost every costom kernel already has a recovery.
8.no everyone can use flashtool, unlocked or not except r800at models, no thats not what flashtool is for, flashtool is built to flash .ftf files to Sony Ericsson phones, it also has other functions like unlocking a bootloader and other things

Hi,
I'm new to rooting and flashing custom ROMs, so any help will be greatly appreciated
I'm using an orange xperia lt15i, that I've decided to root and on which I want to run CyanogenMod 9.1
Here's what I've come up with :
flashing a generic ftf to debrand my phone, in orded to unlock the bootloader
install recovery
unlock boot loader
flash CM
The catch is, flashtool (0.9.16.1) can't read any of the ftf files I put in the firmware directory..any idea ?
Did I get the steps in the right order, is there any way to achieve this at all ?
Thanks

maybe file is wrong download here a new one. this works 100% LINK
also use normal flashtool not 64bit.
install drives from flastool install dir/drivers for your phone
install android sdk (just leave all like it is & press install)
now to the process:
flashing a generic ftf to debrand my phone, in orded to unlock the bootloader i dont think this is need. on sony bl unlock site theres mentioned how to get in service menu & look if bootloader unlock allowed: yes or no. if yes just proceed. any way, CM requires flashng stock ics ftf b4 so do it after unlock...
install recovery no need if you flash CM's kernel later it was recovery built in (all custom)
unlock boot loader
flash cm kernel via fastboot
flash CM dont forget gapps! (google apps)
