[REQ] Guide for using heimdall for I9082. - Galaxy Grand Duos i9082 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello mates, has anybody here tried using heimdall for our device?
Recently i want to learn some development on ubuntu and have little space on hdd(culprit:android source code ). So i plan to completely remove windows but then i can't use odin. Also, we all love open source
If anybody knows how heimdall works or already using it...please make a guide for it.
I actually tried it myselves by reading documentation but while selecting firmware it searches for .tar.gz in stead of .tar.md5.
I also renamed it to .tar.gz but then it freezes and then force closes(atleast on ubuntu).
So i think some changes are need in firmware package?
If anybody knows how to flash, please share the knowledge.
Thankyou in advance.
And for those who dont know what the heck heimdall is, look here

[Q] Up to date root procedure

I'm new to the process or rooting android phones, and I just purchased a T-Mobile G2. I've been searching around for a rooting procedure to follow, I found a lot of ways to do it, but some of them are either too complicated for a noob myself, or it came out couple of months ago. I wanted to know if there was a up to date rooting process, and if it would be some what easy to follow.
Check the Wiki, that is the most up to date and safest method to root your phone.
Alright, I'm trying to download all the files necessary but when I try to download "gfree_temp-root.zip" theres no file to be found, is there somewhere else I can download this file?

I just tried as well and the file is no longer there. Can someone post it to this thread?
Edit: The link in the wiki is back up.
When trying to extract contents of gfree_temp-root.zip, I get the error message cannot open file: does not appear to be a valid archive. I have tried a number of download sources. Can someone put a valid archive?
EDIT** Please ignore as it was an issue with my work environment not downloading the complete archive

no counter root for sgs3 att is odin 100% necessary?

Hey guys, I'm on linux here and unfortuantely I do not have a windows computer. I'm pretty new to the android game, sgs3 is my first android phone.
My question: Since I don't have windows will mounting my phones internal flash drive and then using dd to flash the stock image with root enabled over to my phone work the same as odin? or does odin do something further? Also will heimdall work for this purpose? I suppose I can always bring up windows in the hypervisor but it seems like this would be easier. I am also just curious as to what odin does.
Odin is used to flash firmwares, modems, kernels, and recoveries. As far as I know, Heimdall doesn't support the S3, unless it's been updated and I don't know about it. That would be up to you to find out.
As for your first question about using dd, I haven't got a clue. Best wait for someone more knowledgeable then me to come in and answer that one.

Thanks for the reply, in linux dd is a terminal program that writes images to disk, among other things, be it usb, flash drive, hard drive etc. Like if you downloaded the ubuntu image for your computer and then wanted to install it to usb drive for a live image from which make an install on another computer you would use dd if=/image_pathway of=usb drive or flash drive or whatever media you wish to install it to. I have a pandaboard, and have actually used dd to write linaro android to the pandaboard's flash drive before, but I figure theres a good chance that the phone is more complex and may have hardware/software to prevent someone from simply using dd to write a disk image to the phones internal flash drive.
Actually, I believe I've heard of people being able to dd custom recoveries onto the phone. I don't remember where I saw this though.

I think you need an unsecure kernel to the dd thing. I think.
Thanks for the replies. I just loadedup windows in the hypervisor and rooted that way. I wish I had a second phone to test stuff like this on lol. I have pandabaord to test software on but it's not quite the same.

Does anyone know who develops odin? Is it someone on this forum? Was thinking maybe they'd be willing to allow me to port it to linux.

Heimdall will work for you.
Life is a prison, death and release.
Odin is leaked software from Samsung.

Anyone else confirm? I can use heimdall to flash roms, and the root injected stock image to my sgs3 from within linux?
Odin is samsung software. We have a few samsung tablets that come in for repair where I work and Odin is what samsung gave us to flash their software onto the tablets.

[Q] plz help....how to root at&t gs3 on linux

please help i have been looking everywhere to find out how to root my att galaxy s3 on linux. i have only been able to find instructions for int. version or using windows. link to a thread or anything will help. thanks in advance
Maybe use wine... Not sure if that's safe though. Search for running Odin with wine
You can try to search for Heimdall, witch from what I understand is the Linux equivalent to Odin for Windows. I actually just removed Linux from my computer and reinstalled Windows specifically so I could root. I wasn't happy about it but I figured I would go with the tried and proven method to avoid any possible headache. I can say that mrRobinson's no flash counter trip method worked flawlessly for me on Windows though. I can't say anything about Heimdall though, as I was too nervous to try it.
Heimdall will handle it; I've done it myself. See here for how to use it in this case.
thanks

Yes, considering that set of instructions was developed based on my own device.

[Q] Need a Windows 8 Guru to help solve my rooting problems on Sprint SGS3

I have a Sprint SGS3 and Windows 8. I cannot seem to decompress the files in order to use ODIN. I have tried everything from 7zip to a few other zip type programs and nothing I do works. Can someone please help me? BTW, I have read numerous XDA posts and researched other sites and still cannot find a solution.
So your saying you can't click on the file to open it and pull the tar file? Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34579827

Question factory firmware

hello!
I have been searching for the proper factory firmware for this phone. I found one but was missing the xml file or scatter file to flash with SP tool
I managed to unlock the bootloader using this tool
GitHub - bkerler/mtkclient: MTK reverse engineering and flash tool
MTK reverse engineering and flash tool. Contribute to bkerler/mtkclient development by creating an account on GitHub.

but i didn't go any further until find proper restore firmware.
You haven't gotten a hold of any firmware for the 5+ yet? I should have done a lil research before getting the 6 Pro!
It's bull**** tmobile or wingtech whoever it is isn't looking out for Jr. Dev crowd, which i am.

Were you able to do anything with it? I tried every available method on Windows and Linux and I failed to flash with adb fastboot, failed with SP flash, failed to install TWRP, even though I followed every available method online. I tried to port TWRP, failed. Failed to do a ROM dump. Failed to extract payload.bin and/scatter file. Idk what the folk is up with this phone, but it's locked up tighter than a constipated nun. The file set is unlike anything else I've ever seen from mediatek or anyone else. People have made suggestions for this or that, but nothing has worked and there are no known working methods that I know of. I am not about to pore over the source code and meticulously comb through the code until I figure it out. This phone will likely be obsolete by then. Sh!t, we'll have flying cars and space travel by then. Apparently I'm not allowed to offer to use view bots to boost their ad ticker to make them money, but it's perfectly okay to solicit help for donations. One is spamming and the other isn't. But help is help and we're a 'community'. You figure they'd make enough with marketing as mainstream as they are. But apparently they don't want their ad ticker going up because they want people like is to take a hike. No help for us. Even though people with crappy phones make up the VAST majority of phone owners. Far fewer people are walking around with an s22 than they are a REVVL 4. I bet my last dollar. Xda really has changed a lot. I remember when I first started doing this I had an LG l38c Optimus dynamic. Xda was SO helpful then. They helped me figure out odin, got me into Android kitchen, adb etc. Hell, I fell in love with android development and hacking all over again because of this site. Now I can't even get a reply from anybody. Not even to tell me to go **** in my hat. This is just unreal. Thanks for all the help guys! You fell off, big time! I'd downvote you if I could. Sorry... I'm rambling... Anyway, if you figured out how to flash back to stock then please let me know. Thanks
