Ok first off I've researched and studied this to hell and posting is my last resort. I'm rooted, use vpn shields, have tried several top rated tethering apps from the play store and a proxy. None work, once I try to load a website on my PC the t mobile web page pops up about tethering and such, I am unable to tether. Anyone with suggestions?

in order to have Tethering work, you MUST Flash the Kernel with a "Tweaked" version that allows Wifi Tether.
the file I got downloaded, I forgot where from is named, SetUIDRestrictRemovedKernel.zip
If you do a google search using the filename I provided above, It should be the second choice. ( I just did the search)
it'll download when you select to....
You can also try here: http://d-h.st/GcM
Aloha and good luck!

if you're using the included Tethering app it works right out of the box! It's the "Trev_E_Mod" tethering and others that are not possible to enable without the Kernel patch......
Ya it seems all the custom roms I tried I could not for the life of me get wifi tethering to work. I had to go back to stock TW for M919 and now it works perfectly. I wish I heard about the tweaked kernel before. Will try the tweaked kernel when I get an itch to flash something new hopefully 4.4 real soon!

Ok I am on the new unlimited data plan that just came out. I was rooted on the stock rom.
T mob pushed me a text last night saying wireless tether has been blocked for me. I was using the wifi tether app from the play store and it seems I cant use it. I also tried foxfi and its not doing anything.
So I flashed cm10 thinking I could get around it and I saw I couldnt tether still with it?
Edit using uvlh2 radio
Was still using stock kernal
Any ideas guys?

Which radio/baseband are you running? If you've updated to the newest leaks, ie. LI2 or LI3...somehow wifi tethering isn't working. But i've gone back to LH2 and everythings good.

I had the WiFi Tether App v3.1 beta working on H2 on ICS. It will not work on any JB with the same radio.
On frosty's JB ROM, hotspot in settings wanted to start up, but it immediately tried to get me to upgrade to tethering plan - and then would close when I wouldn't.
It only FC'd on Xquizi JB, and the beta will not work there either. The beta had worked on the ICS ROM's I had tried - including Xquizi's. Did not use it enough to be sure TMo would not block it though.
Are you saying it functions but ur getting the upsell page? If that's the case the baseband shouldn't matter. They block ur tethering based on your user agent. Make sure ur not using internet explorer. Best way around it is Firefox w/ the user-agent switcher add-on.
I'll keep that in mind. I however had the text from t mob saying its been blocked. It can still connect to the net but I get the up sell page.

WiFi Tether from the market works best for me!
I am seeing a lot of negative comments about this app 'wifi tether' and gs III stock. It seems to indicate that it does not play well together. This is why I was asking, because this was my experience today: No consistent connection, it simply drops the tether and the app stops.
Sent from my AT100 using Tapatalk 2
Better get used to it if ur stayin stock. All that works unless u have the means to Bluetooth tether. If u can do it with Bluetooth try foxfi. Normal tether doesn't work with it yet. Also if u haven't done so, in addition to setting gnex profile in the tether app and unchecking the disable wake lock option, delete ConnectionManager.apk from /system/app. Probably the cause of your tethering woes
Thanks for confirming

WiFi Tether works for me just fine (gotta select the GNexus CDMA/LTE profile).
The only hiccup I've found is that before I activate tethering, I often need to do a fresh reboot on the GSIII, or else it will claim its broadcasting, but it really isn't.
And, of course, root IS required for this particular app.

I don't know enough about the rules on posting links so................
I did a google search for "wifi tether versions"
Down toward the bottom of the results I came across a page from the androidpolice site.
Right above the row of three screen shots is the following sentence: (If it does get pulled, however, you can always grab the apk from Here).
Click on the word "Here" and it will take you to the android-wifi-tether project home page.
Click on downloads and that will get you to where you want to be.
I am running Jelly Bean on my GS3 and have yet to be able to get wifi tether or foxfi to work at all.
I am about to start at the oldest version of wifi tether and work my way forward until I find something that works.
Until I find something stable, I will be using pdanet for wired tether. Hey, it works all day long for me.
On EDIT.............
Ignore most of the above and just google "android wifi tether project"
It will cut out most of the steps and is the first result on google.
Dang, I've been here almost two years and still considered a new member?
Had to wait 5 minutes before I could edit the post with better info.
Trust me, I'm a real person........not a spam bot!
Sure it has something to do with post count.
Any luck with older versions of wifi tether?

Not yet.
Work got real busy right after I made the post and I wasn't able to go through the apk's.
I have to go over to another house and do a few hours worth of work before I can really get in and mess with these.
It may be late this evening (for me) but I am still going to try and run through them.
Sorry about the delay.
I wasn't able to do anything with this until this morning.
I was unable to get any of the versions to work with JB.

Thanks for the info.
ok so i live and breath tethering so when i upgraded to the 4.3 rooted TW rom i was about to kick myself for not making sure I had tethering. But then I found this zip, tried it, and it failed... at first. So here is how i got it to work, on my phone and my wifes (both T999's).
*-All credit for this goes to Jovy's extensive work and abraham.ramirez for the flashable zip I am just bringing this to the masses
1. D/L android terminal emulator
2. D/L this zip and get it onto your phone somewhere you can flash it
3. open term emu and enter these commands
su(grant/approve)
mount -o remount,rw /system
rm /system/app/Teth*
exit
exit(closes app)
4. reboot into recovery and flash zip
5. after reboot go into settings/More Networks/Tethering - enable tethering
6. hit back button and then go into Mobile Networks/Access Point Names
7. press the circle next to Tethering APN
8. quickly before it jumps to epc automatically hit the menu button(bottom left of hanset) and while the circle is still next to Tethering APN press the Reset to default button that popped up.
9. DONE!!! - Native tethering now enabled... no more TMobile browser popup or user agent changer - connect your laptop, tablet, or whatever and away you go
took me a minute to figure it out on my phone but my wifes went within 2 minutes of having the zip on the handset. Hope this helps.
Same thing was happening to me. Did what you said right here and guess what? IT WORKS!! Thank you so much

just wanted to point out, this is from the UVUEMJ4 leaked rom, in my case it would not work on UVUEMJC (tmos latest ota) i had to pull my framework-res.apk, decompile, mod, recompile and push it back to get it to load and not freeze at boot.

Im on a T-mo stock, rooted, T-999, GS3 and on the suggetion of ther I bought this app to no avail... after listening to others suggestions, and even the dev suggested settings, nothing I do work... I have been able to get it to so my network ssid on bot my N10 and my xbox360, but the times when its connected...t theres always an issue where the is no data(internet access) on tethered devices... the xbox goes as far as to tell me its an issue (error) having to do with the IP ... and once you get past the initial settings process.. Dev hasnt been ( or hasnt tried) much help or assistance since.
After I flashed the zip I'm stuck in a bootloop. Any ideas why?

What exactly is happening when you start tethering ?
Are you getting "error" or you can start tethering but no data is transfered from your device ?
My post solves the "error" problem as described here

Other posts here indicate that in some cases tethering won't work if you don't have a plan for it.

It will tell me my phone is in an "unknown state" if I try to stop and restart the tethering process.

Im trying to get the native tether with security check bypassed.. i found the code but of course when i debloated i dont have the files, so i got to wait 3 hours to dl the rom with the file ..ugh useing th previous rom files i can get it to launch and run, and show up but going into settings crashes settings
I'm stock rooted except running ObOne kernel. Didn't think the kernel was the problem but didn't run tether on 4.3 before flashing the new kernel. When I ran into the tether problems I wasn't debloated but since then I've dumped some stuff.
Based on the error messages it seems as if the app can't write to the directory but have no clue why. Tried OpenGarden and it had the same errors.

It seems it was hit or miss with the tether apps. and it seemed that a reasonable fix was to use native tether with security bypassed. Does anyone knows if tethering works on Verizon HTC one after root with Firewater ? I want to make sure before I start messing around with my phone
You need to flash a Rom that allows the native tethering to work. Viper one , santods Roms and ecliptic (sp?) are just some of the more popular sense Roms. Really reading any Rom op will tell you if native tethering works or not. I am running viper one but know with 5.0 some people are having tethering issues bit a fix is on its way. 4.3 works flawlessly
