Best ROM purely for Emulators/games - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
been a little while since I've looked around on the play forums, I was wondering if anyone had developed a lightweight, purely game playing ROM. No radio, or much in the way of background services, purely just for playing games. It seems a good way for this phone to spend its twilight years so thought id ask, thanks again.

Depends on your make of play a,I at, x there's a CDMA ROM called cola for GB that fast and very lightweight the same with xperiance it ROM both ROMs are in nandroid form so you just restore using cwm on ,2.3.3 GB as for gem side of things I'm not sure since I have a CDMA phone

Hmmm.
I think it's subjective, according to your needs.
If your play is r800i, it is a lot more easier(although if you don't need data, you could flash i to x and x to i)
But you could search for gaming roms in Android Development.
And, a rule of thumb by fma965.....
Q15: Whats the Best ROM/Kernel for Battery Life/Gaming/Performance etc.? (Question not to ask)
Again these are not the sort of questions you want to be asking. Try some out and see what you like and how each performs for your needs.

I have tried a few roms and my favourite for emulation is Racing Xplay with the Retro arch emulator. Some of the Snes emulation is a little bit jerky and the touch pads don't work, but overall this is excellent. The only downside of the ROM is that is has a bug, so not all apps from Google Play will install.

Their is no "best" ROM/Kernel threads allowed on XDA. Head over to the development section and see which one "best" suits your needs.

[Q] Advice regarding the Xperia Play.

Hi Guys and Gals,
First post here for me =) so ya new noob in town. And before i get blasted, I tried searching for something of a similar nature but the search was down and because i am looking to pick this up tomorrow for £100, thought i would post. If there is a similar post and you are privy to the url, please post below =)
Like everyone here no ICS is disappointing however the fact that GB seems to run the phone in general better, is there any real reason to upgrade the OS on this particular device?
I am aware custom ROM's for ICS and i believe JB? are available, but do these hinder, performance, compatibility, the game pad use, camera? What is the disadvantage is there to upgrading via custom ROM?
Sony puts a wealth of bloatware on their devices, but I'm told that the Walkman, Sony Movie among others actually are useful apps and are liked among the community. Do we get the option of keeping these?
In Feb/March i will be looking to get a Nexus 4, so this phone will be a secondary in the end. However how does it hold it self for web browsing and gaming? I know the resolution is pretty low for today's standards, but i am seriously considering it. Obviously if i could upgrade the OS version and keep full functionality that would be ideal, but i have seen no such confirmed reports.
Finally with the above mentioned, is there still enough support from developers to purchase this? or should i just wait and save the money for the nexus come feb? Any constructive input would be appreciated, and please if your going to bash it, follow it up with a reason that is not Sony is Lazy and because this phone is rubbish.
Thanks everyone

GB is the most stable and offers the best performance for games. The disadvantage is that you'll lose your warranty. I really like the new features ICS brought, but I'm going to keep on GB, just because I use it for gaming a lot.

Warranty isnt a issue as its second hand over a year old anyway. so upgrading to ICS or JB from what ive been reading around the site removes game pad or touch pad use. does g2ics or was it G2JB? this from what i gathered remains on the GB kernal but imports ICS/JB features? Does this also remove pad functionality? shouldnt if its still on the GB kernal?
My main use will be for gaming (no brainer ) and web browsing, till i get my Nexus anyway then web browsing will be on that.So for gaming purposes stick to GB, leaving GB will only worsen the gaming capabilities on the device?

Yes, leaving Gingerbread will most likely not be beneficial for the gaming experience, as the newer versions of Android are more demanding in terms of processing power and ram memory. Gin2ICS and Gin2JB are Gingerbread roms with an ICS or JB theme and some features, so it will be very close to the performance of stock Gingerbread. You will still be able to use the touchpads. I have read that there is a fix for the gamepads on Ice Cream Sandwich, not sure about Jellybean though.

Thanks so much. The Gin2ICS sounds sweet if the slide out controller has full functionality.
OK so i found the following links which i thought was useful. Have you had a look or attempt at these?

and

Seems to have everything and erything fully functional and running smoothly. Might be worth a try? If one was to flash their device and didnt like the result, could they revert to stock without difficulty? or would they need to manually find the stock files off the internet?
Thanks

The rom does seem like it's running okay, especially with the drivers, but they seem to be included in the rom:
Changelog:
New Bin files ( higher preformence and game combatiblity )
New Andreo Drivers for 2xx
Increase Ram without swapper implement
New Framework files ( increase Preformence and gamecompatiblity )
New Lib Files ( increase Preformence; app and gamecompatiblity )
New Sony ICS Gamepad and Touchpad drivers ( get it from Sony )
New Build.prop ( be not afraight there are 2.3.4 at build.prop its for game Compatiblity and Apps Compatiblity they was Xperia Play Optimized )

Might be worth a try.
To get back to stock you can flash a .ftf file, plenty of guides about that on this forum.

[Q] Gaming ROM (R800i)

My poor Xperia Play is getting on a bit and I think it's time to put it into retirement. I'm hopefully getting an Nexus 4 soon, but I want to hang onto my Xperia Play as a pure gaming device. Mainly emulators and such, but also supporting the touch pads if possible (particularly FPSE).
I want to give it the best ROM for this purpose, with a good balance of speed, stability, and support. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Any Gingerbread rom with a custom kernel capable of overclocking will probably be fine for gaming. ICS and Jellybean are more resource-intensive, thus decreasing the in-game performance on such roms.

All my games have ran perfect since switching to NXT Light Edition.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into the ROMS suggested so far.
What's the situation with the touch pad controls in FPSE these days? Last I heard, a long while ago, they worked provided you were on an ICS ROM?
FPse touchpads work on GB/ICS now. Probably JB too
Just read my signature... No lags any more!!
I tested all roms for locked BL and that's the ONLY ONE that gave me the required performance!
Just thing what can you do with an unlocked BL!!
Cheers mate!!
Cola rom. Not sure if it works with 800i but if it does you'll love it.

What is the best rom for gaming? R800at.

I am curious what people feel is the best rom for gaming and speed on an r800at, guess that part doesn't matter as long as its a GSM Rom.
Thoughts and if you can detail why you feel said rom is the best. Again I am looking for best gaming rom, speed and available memory.

[ROM] DiXperia 2 'Everlasting' | Performance. Stability. Experience. | 04.09.2012
I used a lot of GB ROMs but I always return to this.
I believe it's smoother and more stable than others.
Cant believe u open a thread just to ask this Q. Scrolling down my xda app there's a bunch of thread asking the same. Not to mention in the general sect.
But since u new to Gsm i like to point out to ur Q that ALL GB ROM can gme & they hav their own pros/cons. So to know which suited u best, u just gonna hav to try it. Coz we may hav the same phone but our taste & view are totally diff. Cheerio.

Sdojoin
Normally I balked at these threads, but okay. I like NXT Lite rom and Doom kernel, though honestly I find all gingerbread roms to be good with gaming performance.
You can check here on explanation of the cpu governors and and i/o schedulers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369817, it might help with tuning between performance and battery life. I'm using 'smoothass' and 'bfq' @ 250-1000 and it's very smooth, as far as this old phone goes.
Thank you everyone for the replies. As stated I am new to the GSM xperia play but have been on the CDMA for 18 months. I pretty much stick to my own stock VZ rom but heavilynmodded and debloated. So I am just trying to determine what are some users preferred choice(s) of roms as I have been limited to choices of roms when compared to the GSM model.
I guess I should also ask as I have been on 2.3.3 since pretty much the beginning but with the recent release of JB for the PLAY I would imagine that the xperia games launcher doesn't work as these roms are not built on Sony framework, am I incorrect in this? And also how people rate the gamepads on JB? I pretty much play some of the following
Shadowgun,
asphalt 6, backstab,
modern combat 3. (want to play 4 but its not smooth enough for me to play it emjoyably.)
NFS most wanted. (If you want to add me - ozzmanj1)
Order & chaos
The built in PS1 emulator
Other emus
Bards tale
Dead space
All kemco RPGs
Nova 2.
Sorry for the long list. But if someone sees any games above that don't really play nice with JB can you state below. Thank you

Thank you. I game a lot (when I have the time) So I would prefer something that would be best with the following features:
Excellent for Gaming
A Rom that has the most available memory.
Is DiXperia and/or NXT2JB / NXT Lite good with these above perks? Again sorry for all the questions its just that now that I have all these choices of ROMs I cannot decide and thought I would pick everyones brain on it.
My vote goes toward jokawild. No titanium backup issues, great on gaming, better wifi strength, xperia stock look. Best of all its based on stock gingerbread.

[Q] Any game oriented Rom for the Defy?

Hello guys!
So, not long ago I started "modding" my Defy. Things were not that new to me, since I used to "mod" my Xperia Mini Pro).
The main point is, Xperia Mini Pro had a Game oriented Rom named Gingergames, so my question is, if is there anything similar to that for the Defy!
I took a few searches but could not find any so far.
For the record, I tried Quarx 4.2.2 rom, but it doesn't do good at games even though its looks are fantastic!
Thanks a lot!
some states that stock rom is good for gaming..

This is actually true, but I was hoping for a rom with especifical game optimization.
Well, after looking the internet up and reading a lot, I came to the conclusion that White Rabbit Next Gen ROM would have a good performance on gaming since it was deemed as very light, fast and reliable and the final fact is that my Defy is running all 3D games I have tried so far without barely any lags or slowdowns. I have tried Asphalt 7 and Contract Killer 2, and both run just smooth.
So, in case anyone else is wondering, I am not sure if White Rabbit Next Gen is the BEST Rom for gaming, but I can assure it is a pretty good one!
Well, I'm on Quarx's cm10 20130326 ROM and gaming is buttery smooth. I have been playing FIFA 12 and Need For Speed Most Wanted with no lags. I still wanna try GTA III and see if passes the test. However, I had to over clock. Here are my settings
300/16
600/28
900/42
1250/58

[Q] Best rom for emulation right now?

I've decided to unearth my Xperia Play for some emulation (N64 and PS1). It's currently running Aurora Play 1.1, a GB based rom if I recall correctly. I have not used it for about 1.5 years, and was wonder what is the best rom now with the greatest performance with emulation for N64 on Mupen64Plus AE and PS1 on ePSXe. My phone antenna is broken so I will not be making any calls or texts, the device is purely for gaming/emulating.
I'm open to GB, ICS or JB roms but the touchpads need to function perfectly with no lags (I remember trying ICS roms and there was lag whenever the pads were used). Thanks for everyones feedback, I look forward to see what ROMs people are running and do the same things I do

High-five for being an Aurora Play user.
To my knowledge, for perfect functionality and performance, GB roms are still the best. Aurora Play is a little outdated now, especially that version, although there haven't been many fantastic advances since that rom was made in terms of GB rom performance. Vokal's GB to KitKat rom (something along those lines) is quite good, whilst I've not used it personally it was a damn good alternative to AP (better in some ways too) back in the day - I can only assume it's gotten better in the past year or so. I recommend giving it a shot.
I don't personally recommend any other Kernels aside from Doom and Wedges Kernel's to be honest - any others have originated from theirs anyway, and if they could've made them any better than they were they would've.

Thanks for your reply. I spent the last couple of days trying various ROMs. Tried xElite Gamer 2.0, but for some reason the touch pads were not functioning, as well as a couple of other ROMs. I've ended on Gin2KitKat which is what I think you're mentioning + extremekernel r3. That kernel interested me with its extra VRAM and higher OC if I needed it. This is perfect, the ROM is super fast and it almost managed full speed PPSSPP with 0 frameskip on Burnout Legends (and some games it does run). N64 is also great, SM64 runs full speed. On the previous ROMs, it gave me some stuttering sounds but that is totally not present on this ROM. I expect that the results with PS1 will be similar.
Yeah that's the one I was talking about. Nice one.
I have to say though, not so sure on the vram thing. Nice one anyway lol.
