hi everyone:
I have been looking via numerous thread online on many Android forums especially here and have been unsuccessful for the past 2 days now. So I figured I would need to create a thread and finally give in and ask for some help. I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy 3 phone and I need to unlock it so that it will work on my AT&T service. Now i understand about rooting the phone and being able to play with themes etc, but its not that great if I can't use the phone itself.
Now without coming up with some kind of answer I must have watched about 40 youtube video's hoping to find out some kind of information. Mostly what I got out of it was numerous website that offer unlocking for phones at a certain price.

I think the toolkit stickied in the development forum has an option to SIM unlock the GS3. I have not tried this, and do not know if it works, but if the option is there, you might want to give it a shot.
If you're on contract with t mobile and your account is in good standing with them. Call them tell them you're going over seas and need to unlock your phone so you can use it. They will send you unlock code ... then pop in an att sim card and it will prompt you to enter the unlock code t Mobil gave you. Done

OK thank you. I followed your instructions and they said it would take up to maybe 24 hrs for the phone to be unlocked. If it isn't unlocked than she said to call back with the conformation number she gave me. If that doesn't work than they would have to give Samsung my info and could take up to 14 days. She said when you buy phones almost all stands and corp stores have already unlocked phones.
she also said it would be auto unlocked for good. Can they lock the phone back up once it is be unlocked?

edited: Once I have it unlocked ( if all goes good ) do i use the same APN settings that I needed to put into the phone in order for my phone to work on the AT&T network as I did with my S2 that I got unlocked ?
Don't they use different frequencies for HSPA+
You would be relegated to edge speeds, correct me if I'm wrong

I really don't know. That would be a great question if someone would be nice enough to help me with this information? Again i have a T mobile S3 hopefully its unlocked would I be losing speeds by being on the AT&T network?

The T-Mobile S3 has the 850/1900 3G bands so it will work on AT&T's 3G network. It will not get LTE though.
You can unlock either by paying for a code from the various resellers online or requesting an unlock code from T-Mobile if you have an account in good standing with them. If you can't get the code from T-Mobile I suggest searching 'T999 unlock' on eBay and you'll find some good options.
The tmobile galaxy s3 will work on the ATnT HSPA+21 frequency. Same frequency the International version runs on for that network.

I found an excellent place so far on eBay for buying unlock codes. they have almost 3800 sells with a 99% positive feedback. Great customer service. The guy answered numerous questions of mine and made sure i did everything correctly. Payment was $24.95 US, so hopefullly everything will go good.
He was talking about being on something called an " Edge " network which is a little slower, but he said you won't notice a difference between your unlocked S2 and the unlocked S3 now. Right now my S2 says I have 3G service when I use it. I dont understand how i had a inspire4G, what is the 4G for if AT&T only gives you 3G service? And where I am in United States I should have 4G service no matter what. I'm confused on that.,

Edge is 2G speeds, which are substantially slower than 3G speeds. IMHO, 3G speeds are livable, 2G/Edge is not.
Different phones have different radios which work on different frequencies. Some phones are not compatible with other services at all, and some will work on other carriers but often not at optimal speeds.

So than why would someone suggest that I would get "edge" instead of what i have now? I'm getting 3G now with my T-Mobile S2 unlocked on AT&T, but now I'm going to have an unlocked S3, why wouldn't it be the same?

Because he/she doesn't know what he/she is talking about. You will be fine with a T-Mobile S3 on AT&T.

Voice willl work fine you will not see HSPA+ speeds on At&t with a T-Mobile Galaxy SIII.
If the T-Mobile SIII has the hardware capability to support the At&t HSPA+ bands you would need modified radio software to unlock this ability.
I believe this was done on the Galaxy Note to tun on T-Mobile HSPA+ network before it was officially launched on T-Mobile.

I unlocked my t999 and am using an att straight talk sim getting HSPA speeds. Going to switch back to tmobile prepay because it is way faster than att HSPA with better latency. Although coverage may be lacking, i may just switch to an att ST sim.
To answer your question, a Tmobile S3 will work on ATT HSPA+ network with the HSPA+ Speeds of up to 6-7mbps in NYC area. The average I've been getting is around 2-3.5 mbps. With the tmobile prepay sim I have, it's usually around 2-18mbps down in NYC area.
The T-mobile S3 will not work on the ATT LTE network because it lacks that radio (or so they say for now); there have been other threads suspecting it's just a matter of flashing the right radio to "turn on" the ATT LTE radio. However, if all you want is HSPA+ speeds, rest assured it will work fine.
The ATT S3 is lacking the AWS bands for TMobile so it will not get the HSPA+ on Tmobile.

radio issue
First off, I would like to thank everyone who has been helping me along with my issues with my phone. I appreciate it a lot and I'm picking up more knowledge more and more everyday from you guys and reading heavily on the forums.
if the hardware in the phone doesn't support HSPA+ 1) will i have to root the phone and 2) change the radio? And 3 ) if I change the radio does that mean I would need to install a custom ROM i order for it to work properly?
Also, from one of the post they said "The T-Mobile S3 has the 850/1900 3G bands " - of that is true will than I should be able to have the 3G speeds correct?
I really hope I am not making some people angry, I'm new to this and trying my hardest to understand everything so I don't make mistakes. Please bare with me. Again, thank you so much everyone who has contributed so far. I still have a lot to learn. The reason why is because I just don't want it to work ( I do, want it to work ) but I want to understand why everything is working they way it is and I've over the past almost month have been picking up a lot of knowledge. No, actually, you are wrong. The T-Mobile S3 does not need any modification to work properly on AT&T's HSPA network. Seems you are confusing something else with frequency. Quit spreading bad information.
OP: Don't worry about it. Some are making this way more complicated than it needs to be. As said before, if you have the T999, you will be fine on AT&T's HSPA network without any modifications (other than an account...lol). Just get the phone SIM-unlocked, pop in the right SIM, you are good to go. Seriously, it is that easy.

To keep things short, I'm a noob to most of the phone things. I have a HTC Google (T-mobile) G2 which is unlocked and has an AT&T Sim card. Right now it's running the Virtuous Quattro RC3 ROM. I did a full wipe of the phone and the ROM has been working great (despite the camera problems), but I noticed the phone would disconnect from the AT&T service every 10 mins or so. After using the phone all day I realized that everytime I unlock the phone, the phone disconnects from the service for about 1 min and then re-connects along with random times while I'm using the phone. I didn't have this problem with the last ROM (Virtuous Unity). But I know it's a problem with the phone because my house has perfect reception and I have never had a connection problem in the house. However, I do not know what could cause this problem and not sure if it is the Radio since I have read about alot of people talking about that. I have no idea what radio I'm using now and have no idea how to find it.
In addition, the phone cannot recognize my phone number in the settings and requires me to program the voicemail number (which of course I cannot figure out). Both of these were automatically recognized by my previous Virtuous Unity ROM.
Anyway, if someone could tell me what is causing this connection issue on my phone and how to fix it, I would be sooo grateful!
Please let me know if you need more information.

That seems to be the easiest solution, but I have been using this unlocked phone with AT&T service for a month now and can't change service providers at the moment. Since I know the phone can work with AT&T I would rather try to find a solution to this problem.

I just did and it works perfectly in an AT&T phone and an Unlocked Nokia phone.
Try a different ROM.
Thanks for the advice. I started downloading the Affinity ROM to fix the problem. Just really liked the interface for the Quattro, but the camera bugs are annoying anyway.
you do realize with a tmobile branded g2 you won't have the proper cellular bands for high speed data? also you will need to change the apn to get things working. but yes changing radios may solve the dropped service I just couldn't tell you what radio works best, maybe test a few out... but as always be extra careful when playing with firmware

I got this phone from a friend when I badly needed a phone, but now that I can invest in a new phone, would any non-AT&T phones allow me to have high speed data? I don't want to pay for the smartphone plans, so I need something that is unlocked to stay on the cheaper plan.
I have tried to do some research on radios before and was having a hard time, but I will look again since I like the Quattro ROM much more than any of the other ROMs I've tried.
some will work some won't, try a wesite called gsm arena, this will give you phone specific radio bands

I installed a few verizon roms. I can change the network setting, but always get an error when i search for net works.
I only have 2 sim cards to test it out so I am not sure if there are bad sims. One is verizon LTE and onther is from an overseas gsm carrier tigo.
What more can I do with out bricking my phone?

I finally received the part from china. I installed it fairly easily. I did have to cut the back cover and pat of the metal plate from the reader.
Sd card works and reads fine. I only have have a verizon LTE and a tigo sim card to try it out So I am going to try flashing different roms soon, I am on Blazer. Nothing seems to happen when the verizon sim is inserted.
you are still be able to use sprint LTE, since the sprint sim is built into the main board and not the sd/sim reader.
Any have advise on how i can check if it know a sim card is inserted?

It should be as easy as unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one. You would also need to get a verizon back plate. But this phone is super easy to open and change parts, minus the screen.
You will lose LTE, unless there is some way to get a sim from sprint (the Iphone 5 has one).
Does anyone know a res eon this will not work? I plan on ordering one later today.

Sprint LTE uses a different frequency than every other major carrier. You're not going to pop in an AT&T (or any other) card and use their LTE, and you'd still be tied to Sprint CDMA unless I'm mistaken.

I believe he stated his goal is to put a SIM slot in his s3. No where did he mention AT&T or using it for any other companies. He said he would need a Sprint SIM, and no others. He did say something about a Verizon backplate though

What is the point? Most carriers that use SIM cards(if not all) use GSM radios. This phone has CDMA radios, so it wont pick up the signal.

I can see it's pointless for most. But for those who travel and don't wanna pay sprint ridicules roaming rates, like me. It does have a cdma radio but the LTE part of the phone has gsm capabilities like the Verizon version.
It's more of proof of concept more than anything.
The Sprint SGSIII uses a RUIM that is hardwired to that board. A RUIM can do what a SIM can do as well as handle CDMA subscriber information. An early manual for the Sprint SGSIII showed instructions for SIM removal/installation, but it was changed before launch to be a non-removable component. Likely why the phone was delayed; they changed their minds on making it a fully-fledged World Phone in lieu of other models like the new Photon.

The S3 would have to have another Radio hardware installed to be what you are talking about as in Travel.
That's one of the Cool features on my line 2, Motorola Photon.....World Phones is what they are called.....Sim cards most useful purpose is to move data from one phone to another, contacts etc..
I spent hours researching this as well, not to try and enable GSM for global roaming, but to maybe, possibly get LTE from Cricket working. I looked at a few pictures of the main board from Ebay auctions, and while I think it's possible to do what the OP is proposing, our main board is not the same as other GS3s. I'm no expert, but the components that are under the microSD and cover plate aren't the same, even compared to a Verizon board. On top of that, the embedded SIM card is located on the skinny side that runs up the side of the phone, next to the battery.
I can't say with certainty, since I haven't scoured every single thread on the subject, but I haven't seen anyone provide the ability to bypass the embedded SIM. Well, maybe they did when they hacked the Photon. As far as the radio goes, it would seem that flashing new radio firmware might work to get the radio operating at the right frequency. Again, I make no real claims on this, as I'm no expert. LOL But from the info I can find, the radios are the same, at least on the dual core variants across the board, and are controlled by firmware. So, in the OP's idea, this would be less than ideal, unless someone could write a custom radio version that would retain CDMA voice and EVDO data for Sprint, as well as pointing the LTE/GSM side to the appropriate frequency.
Looking at Sprint's Galaxy Note 2, the embedded SIM looks to actually be on the metal cover that houses its microSD slot, so at least that part of the equation seems like it would be easier to accomplish with that phone.
For my part, I figured that even if Cricket would allow me to buy an LTE SIM and attach it to my ESN in their system, it would still be a major pain to try and overcome the embedded SIM hurdle.
In closing, I hope that no one interprets my ramblings as me being negative. When I saw the Photon hacked, I quickly realized that it was well beyond my comfort zone seeing as I don't have the funds to replace my phone when (Not if!) I destroyed it! I'm sure that it could be possible, especially given the talent of a lot of the members of XDA. I just wanted to put in my 2 cents, and point out that there is a lot more involved than just plugging in a new component and popping in a SIM card. Hopefully people here will rip apart my thoughts and prove me wrong, as I am very interested in trying to convert my phone to use Cricket's LTE.

a Sim toolkit is included in /system/app/
All you need i a launcher or an app that lets you create shortcuts to Activities, and you can then point it to the Sim Toolkit.

I'm sure the way to enable LTE will include flashing a new radio, though I'm not aware of any that will enable LTE without bricking the phone or killing data communication on the SGH-T999 specifically.

I've spent probably two hours in the last few days purely searching and reading whatever specs I can grab, including for FCC ID A3LSGHT999. Every time I'm sure, something knocks me back down to unsure status. It's especially confusing when Samsung, the maker of the phone and the Snapdragon platform it runs on, says it does support LTE - then T-Mobile comes in and says nope (and that it's based on the Snapdragon MSM8260 instead? wtf?).
While they are contradicting their hardware vendor, they have support reps saying both yes and no. No wonder nobody knows anything,
but I'm determined now.
Unfortunately for me I'm not as privy as I should be to the massive amount of terminology and mobile spectrum standards that have been bestowed upon us, but a little more research should bring me up to speed.
My answer until I have a better one is that yes it very much is an MSM8960, and yes, it does support LTE.
No, the LTE this hardware supposedly supports is not using the same frequency spectrum that T-Mobile in the US eventually will (like snoopy1e11 said in this thread).

Of course T-Mobile says it doesn't support LTE. They'll do what they did with the Vibrant. Sell a boat load of them and then release a slightly updated version with full LTE radio. I trust Samsung before TMO anyday.

For all of you saying it's going to support lte, and that our chip is the same as att, answer me this:
Why can we not unlock our device, place a att SIM card into it, register it on att network, and access lte on att network? If all our devices have that same chip that supports lte as you all are claiming, why can't we do this?

Your first three points have no influence from the chip design; The (in)ability to unlock a device is controlled by software, the (in)ability to use a SIM card from another provider (which is generally the exact same hardware) is controlled by software, and the (in)ability to register it to another provider's network is controlled by software, as long as the hardware radio chipset can speak the network's frequency and mobile protocol.
I don't know off-hand why it won't connect to AT&T's LTE. I'm also not an electronics expert but I can imagine that these chipsets can be controlled with firmware to restrict the frequencies the radio may generate or receive, effectively locking it to a provided number of frequencies assigned to the mobile operator.

100% agreed.
The best arguments for and against have already been made. All i see this doing is mirroring all other threads on the same topic. Tempers may flare, infractions might be made, all because no one wants to be wrong and cant wait a year or two when the subject actually becomes relavent.

It can be disabled on both the hw and sw side. In the end it doesn't matter because the T999 was never certified/cleared by the FCC for LTE. So they'd either have to go back through the process or be fined for breaking the law.
I'm convinced it won't happen, but to each his own opinion.

The only reason that the tmobile t999 has any LTE files in it is because all the carriers have the same base rom then stack their crap on top of it! I know how to read code and if you break down most of the apps in the phone they will have provisions for all carriers, not just tmobile. Tmobile doesnt even have LTE towers yet so the answer is still no

In a few select places, T-Mo has LTE. In fact, they'll be sharing towers with Verizon.
But, the true answer to whether or not the T999 can get LTE or not is, gram crackers and apple juice. Yep.

You're way off... Verizon and T-Mobile are two completely different technologies when it comes to their towers.. unless there is no difference in GSM lte versus cdma lte,

Yes, I know, as everyone else, that one is GSM and another is CDMA.
But, fact is that T-Mobile are Verizon are swapping frequencies with one another. What I'm confused about is if this means they're literally using the same towers or if each carrier has so many licenses of certain frequencies and now they're giving up some of those licenses.
I'm confused.
But, what I do know is that:
1. The two are swapping frequencies with one another.
2.Verizon does use GSM LTE.
3. Gram crackers and apple juice determine whether or not the T999 can get LTE.

Its simply a spectrum swap. They're not using each others towers. At least not for anything other than roaming services. Tmobile and Verizon will both be able to use this to provide better and more widely available service and coverage to more people. But they will be using tbe newly aquired spectrum on their own towers and equipment. Not each others.
Its one if the conditions Verizon agreed to for FCC approval. Tmobile swaps a small bit of their licensed spectum along with "cash and other concessions" in exchange.
Good for Verizon, good for Tmobile, good for consumers is the reason the FCC made it a condition. Thats how I understand it anyway.

So, then it's a matter of each carrier having so many licenses to certain spectrums... Like I have 600,000 licenses of something and you have 700,000 of another and we give each other 300,000? Is that kind of what's going on here?
Sort of, but Im not sure it works entirely like that.
I do know that Tmobile received enough to support approximately 60 million new customers in 15 of the top 25 markets, while Verizon received enough to support 22 million, plus cash and such.
I don't really know how the licensing works, but I don't think it goes by the number of users or anything like that, but by frequency ranges. Id imagine theres more to it than just you give me x and I give you y though.

In short:
No there is not a way to enable it, as it has not been implemented by t mo just yet.
Yes it will require a radio update.
Yes the s3 (even the t mo version) is LTE capable.
Was that it or did I miss another question?
Is there any way to use an unlocked tmobile s4 on verizon???? Can you flash a certain modem to make it work?

No. GSM phones are incompatible with CDMA networks.

I have a stock sgh-m919 and I gave my imei to Verizon over the phone, they stated they could not use my phone on a prepaid plan, but I did not inquire about a contract plan. Visit a store and ask questions.
I realize Verizon is CDMA, but I have seen those radio ROMs somewhere to change the frequency of the radio. I think it would require more than that, perhaps even an imei change, I don't really know, I'm just going out on a limb here.
From what I understand Verizon does use the 700Mhz band like AT&T but they use a different portion of the band, the upper is what I read. Google 700Mhz LTE, I think that it will come up.

A Verizon model will work on T-Mobile, just not the other way around :/

Well I've been traveling for a while now with T-Mobile service with my T-Mobile s4 *cough* *unlocked* *cough*, and it does pick up Verizon service and I am able to call and text due to the agreements the carriers have. So I don't see why not. And as to activating any phone on Verizon prepaid, you can't .only have the options they have.
