Can a defective battery cause random reboots?? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a Samsung SGH I747M, that constantly reboots especially when using it, like using the camera and games..
It happens less often when it's charging, so I am wondering before I buy a battery if that could cause it to reboot....

Hey, and yes a defective battery can certainly cause havoc on your phone's ability to turn on/off, and stay on. I recently got a ZeroLemon 7000mah battery for my s3, and it seems if I remove it a certain way, it somehow completely corrupts the ssd and I have to go into recovery and format data...
Anyway, try buying a new battery and see how that goes. They're about 10 bucks on Amazon.

What is usually is the power button is maybe really sensitive to touch, or it's sticking which would cause a lot of reboots without you knowing it.

Why do you remove it? If your phone freezes, Holding the power button for 10 seconds reboots.

Well I have great news!!!!!!
Here's the story.......plz read carefully....
I have a Samsung galaxy SGH I747m originally from bell, it would randomly crash and reboot even when am not using it,It would also crash repeatedly when I use the camera or playing modern combat or temple run..I have tried about 13 different custom roms and the stock Rom(4.1.2).I tried resetting the phone.I tried the dummy file generator to no success. I pulled the phone and cleaned around the power button. I unrooted the phone, to no success.still got the annoying crashes and reboots.probably about 10 times per day...I was so frustrated and was planning to destroy the phone..to my surprise it was a simple fix..
The problem was simply the battery, I bought a baterry and have been using the phone for 3 days now without any crashes or reboots. I wasnt convinced it was simply the battery so I changed back the old battery and boom#! The phone restarted!..
So now I was 100% sure it was the battery..
So before you go trying all different manner of evil consider testing your battery first.. you can message me if you have any questions..
And remember the galaxy s3 is a great phone once its not giving any problems so don't go buy an iphone!!

This was the old battery I had in that was causing the reboots.it is made in China and was bigger and fatter than the other battery..

This is the new battery that I bought.it is made in Vietnam and is slimmer and lighter..
People just test your battery first before doing anything else if your phone keeps rebooting and crashing..

Hey mine too! Since last week the charging became extremely slow and the battery indicator is not accurate. It may take 1 hr to drop 1 % and then suddenly drops 10% within minutes. Also random reboots. Did you change your battery?

Get the battery made in Vietnam. This is likely the Samsung OEM. All ones made in China are not and may be of inferior quality and/or not fit properly.
India is also a Samsung OEM supplier but it seems all Samsung batteries I've seen are made in Vietnam.
Replace Li batteries when they fall below 80% of their original capacity ie SOT. A degraded Li is more likely to fail.
Signs of battery failure:
Swelling, replace immediately
Erratic charging
Sudden drop in capacity in a short time
Symptoms like the OP describes
Replacing the battery is not a big deal, do it before it fails. A failed Li can easily destroy the display or even the whole phone.

Is this a hardware battery failure?

Hey folks,
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this. I typically know what I'm doing, but my old GNex is acting VERY strangely. I gave it to my finance to use since I now have a Nexus 4 for myself (selfish, right?).
The first week she used it, it was just fine. The last few days, though, the battery has been absolutely tanking. And I'm at a loss for words. I've tried re-calibration, factory restoring it with stock images, running stock / Franco kernels, nothing helps. And it's deep sleeping just fine! See the images below.
Am I looking at a possible battery failure? I want to rule out everything else before I spend money on replacing it. The phone isn't even that old though... it was already an RMA replacement, so the battery is barely 3-4 months old. It should not have failed yet, but that would be my luck.

Edit: I can get other examples if need be. She's had under 5-10 minutes maximum of screen on time and seen it go from 100% to 0% in under 5 hours in at least one instance. We live in a great HSPA+ signal area (I had use 2g only checked the day I took these just to try it), so that's not it. And it's getting 90%+ time in deep sleep. I'm absolutely baffled!

If you tried with a stock rom with the minimum apps installed you have the answer. It's not kernel/rom/app related, the last thing you can do is try a new battery, as you have discarded everything else I think it could be the problem.
Best regards.

takes fuzzy picture and then shuts down

I am wondering if someone here can help me.
I have an unrooted SGIII from Sprint and have had the phone since 2012.
In the last update, to kitkat at least I have noticed some serious battery drain...in particular when I take pictures, the pictures get very grainy and then boom, the phone shuts down. Not cool.
do i need a new battery? I have read all the information about saving battery infact I can hardly see my screen my brightness is so low.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Try a factory reset after backup what you want.
If that doesn't help, try Odining the stock ND8 tar from a PC, in the development (non-original) section.

I can't tell you that a new battery will fix your problems. But, I replaced my battery after 9 months of use and I was amazed at the difference. Try borrowing someone's battery and see if it makes a difference? If you buy a new battery and that doesn't solve the problem, you've ruled out the battery and now have 2 batteries to switch between

I have this exact same problem. Any time the battery is below 40-50%, the camera could cause the phone to shut down at any time. Really, anything will cause it to shut down, but it seems like the camera will do it every single time. The phone will not stay on after that point unless you plug it in for even 5 minutes, at which point it tells you your battery is 60-70%.
This is the reason I rooted and then flashed the Odin stock ND8 the other day (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...rint-galaxy-s3-complete-boot-process-t2829181). I then flashed to Wicked X v7.3. It has only been two days, but the same symptoms persist. My wife has the same phone and experiences the same problems, which all started upon the update to 4.4.2.
If anybody has any ideas, I'm all ears.

Got the phone in December 2012, as did my wife. No hard falls that I can remember. Up until recently I had it in an Otter Box Commuter case. I took it out after I updated and started pulling the battery to try to get things to reset (never worked and like the smaller profile so I didn't put the case back on).
Tonight I installed the Xposed critical battery shutdown module and also Battery Calibration recommended in these posts http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2781926 and (can't find the thread recommending Battery Calibration by Nema, but whatever). After I installed the module (and I think activated it), I ran the battery down until the phone shut off. Will charge to 100% tonight and start calibration in the morning.
The module does not appear to be working,as the phone shut down at 28% with no prior warnings that it prevented shutdown. That's unfortunate. To activate the module, do I just click the check mark and reboot?
from what I've seen water damage and hard falls can have a heavy impact on the OS(not like crack screen or digitizer but just a hard fall and phone survives) well except on water proof/shock proof phones.....but for the most part if a factory reset/Odin/Heimdall/what ever method back to stock you use doesn't fix the problem its a hardware issue
All's better after new battery
I just wanted to post a followup to my issue. After the shutdown mod and battery calibration didn't help, I bought an Anker replacement battery from Amazon. Since my wife had the same problem, I bought a two pack for $28. I charged the battery overnight and then in the morning hit the battery calibration button.
I noticed a difference right away - I was only down 7% after a few hours at work. My goal was to let the battery run down until the phone shut off, which happened at about the 30 hour mark with my playing HD youtube videos for the last hour so it would die. The battery life indicator actually counted all the way down to 1% before shutting off, which is a stark contrast to the 30% that had been occurring with the old battery.
With the new battery, I've also used the camera when it was under 30% with no problems.
My recommendation for anyone that has similar problems is to get a new battery. They are a hell of a lot cheaper than a new phone, so it's worth a shot.

By low, the table shuts down and after starting it again, it shows between 5 and 10% battery!!
Something similar happens by charging... it shows 90% and no change... and after a reboot it shows 100%.
Is my battery dying? Should I wipe and restart from zero? Cyanogen?
The speed how fast battery drains is also extreme compared to stand-by times... but I assume this is more or less a problem of this tablet.
Many thanks in advance!

i found better battery life after i did a factory reset. i bought it new and set it up and since then had 1 Sammy update but last week i reset it and it clearly made a difference on my 10.1. yesterday i had 2 hours screen time and on battery for 2 day and some hours and had 60% left.
Add mine to the list....seems to be doing the same thing here. Haven't been able to sort it out yet.
Took the back off mine tonight and reseated the battery connector. Then charged like below. First to time in a while it charged up like this.

I just very carefully went around it with one of those guitar like plastic openers i have laying around from the many tablet/phone repair kits i have used. I probably rebooted it 5 times before i finally popped it apart... thing just did not want to charge. This was the first time i saw it ramp up 1% at a time in a while. The other thing i noticed it was doing was jumping from ~70% to 100% instantly.... The graph showed it too. I didn't believe that was really happening.
some pics would help , is it between the screen and the metallic part or the back and the metallic part ?

I suspect an app did this too. I was on cm when it started...others were stock. Chrome or some other common Google app put our tabs in a funky state.

Replaced Battery twice...strange behavior

I ordered a new OEM battery. Replaced the original. The phone charges normally to 100%, but during use it gets to 20% and shuts off due to low power. Just shuts down. You have to plug it in for about 5 mins before you can even turn it on again. when it comes on it is at 1%. I went back to the provider and complained that he sent me a bum battery....they sent me another....same issue! So I think its a calibration problem.
Anyone have ideas?

The only reference I can find to xperia battery recalibration are steps that are for versions with removable batteries or steps that don't work on the ZL (one set of actions including holding the power button and up volume for 10 secs where there is no response from the phone)
Do you know of any process for ZL that is not root required?

These 100% OEM batteries you see selling on Ebay are 99.9% fake.... its luck if you get them to work and if you do, be glad if you get more than a month out of it.... Get a proper battery from Sony... Ebay is good for a lot of things.... batteries are not one of those things, been there done that lol

i still use the original battery (not replaced it yet) and in battery health test said it's good, no need to replace it.
now i'm trying to find the fix by myself.. maybe i have messed up something with my phone..

And now "com.google.process.gapps has been stopped and i must do hard reset.
Help guys.

I have the same problem, and im on a custom ROM! So annoying
Yea me too. I guess it's my fault or something like this. Sometimes phone can handle 4%, sometimes it'll dead at 11% and so on.

The battery meter isn't that accurate, its just an estimation based on the battery voltage versus how you use your phone (and the resulting "typical" battery drain). You shouldn't expect it to be accurate to the being within the 1-2 (or even 5) percent range. Shutting off at 4 to 11% is not unusual, and not surprising.
You shouldn't be draining your battery down that low on a regular basis. Its bad for long term battery life. Good rule of thumb for Li ion batteries is short and frequent charge cycles.
However, optimizing apps and/or google process stopped after a shutdown (due to low battery) is not normal. That's a different matter.
I have this problem, plus some of my settings get reset such as my wallpaper, ringtone, notification tone, boomsound (off to on), screen timeout, screen brightness, whatsapp (keeps asking me to chose my backup options and no messages come through until then). This has never happened before and I'm not sure why it's only happening now. I'm not purposely trying to drain the battery or anything, it's just that sometimes on the road I am unable to charge it and it'll just die out midway when previously, that extra 15% could've lasted me for another 30 minutes, just enough for me to reach my destination.
The same problem.. But the bigger problem for me, it's reseting my settings..
It is a terrible problem , I return to KitKat and my battery reaches 1% , and so normal ... I'll make a test with lollipop .
Yes, same problem! So glad someone made a thread for it. It's frustrating and happens literally every time.
Experienced on both the stock and a custom rom. Any one knows any fixes? Is it because of the 'battery life reduces over time' thing? My phone is 2 years old now

That seems to be a problem with all htc ones (m7, m8, m9) as they get older, dont worry its normal
ive been experiencing this for a while, clear dalvik cache and let android do the whole rebuilding thing at the start and you should be fine...as for the battery fix ive just learnt to live with it, 15% is the new 2%!!!
I'm on this problem since a lot of time, as i was one of the first in the community to report it.
Seems like an end-of-life issue for one m8 and htc one phones line.
In my case i had a camera and charge board issue too, so in rma htc changed them, and now the phone is charging and quick-charging like it must have to. But i have to be careful when near 15% of battery because using camera, flashlight or others power-expensive features instantly turns the phone off, causing a database mismatch on the next boot (for marshmallow) and consequently the loss of data.
If the instant-poweroff occurs during boot, there is a massive loss of data and a lot of force closes on the next boot.
Nothing to do here i think, sadly.
In kitkat and lollipop battery reach at 1% ...

I have a fix for this as it happened to me and I tried a battery calibration app from the app store... I thought what your thinking now but after finding bad sectors and "repairing" it did actually work
solve the problem of battery and loss of settings , change the battery of my htc, now everything is fine , 3 days that the battery is discharged properly , I hope this information will help someone.
thats kinda "cool" to see many people have same problem as i do. atleast it wont run u crazy as before
1. sometimes phone dies when battery is 15%, and sometimes it dies when around 4% 2% or even 1%
2.resetting settings after phone dies!
so is the solution, to change battery? any better way that doesnt need to spend money?
Replace battery

Yes I've done this a couple of weeks back. The replacement is actually less hard as it seems.
But finding an original replacement battery seems to be pretty hard - Even though the replacement I bought is HTC branded and looks genuine, I feel like it's actually draining a little faster than my old original. 12€ Ebay had too good to be true.
However the instant-shutoffs are now a thing of the past along with the database corruption, so I'm going to have to live with a little less battery life.
Or does anyone know of a provider for genuine batteries?
