Hello
I'm kind of in the market to buy a new smartphone, but i would not have any problems waiting if something where soon to be out.
So my question is, should i get the Galaxy note II now or wait for the Galaxy Note III?
Any concrete rumors about the Note III, or any rumors about a release date? Is it going to be fall before we see a new note?
Oh and one last question does the Note II support USB OTG?
Thanks

Don't expect the Note 3 to be released until Q4 2013. The Note 2 does support USB OTG.
I would recommend you buy the Note 2 now unless your current phone is less than 1.5 years old.
Note 2 its just a key to the technology the best smartphone on the market.

I just bought the note 2 and will buy the 3 if it is a worthy replacement

There is no assured information on the Note III, all we can say for sure is that Samsung will try to make the Note III much better than the note II. If you're in a hurry to get a phone I'll highly recommend getting the Note II. That's the best phone I've ever used and I've used quite a few including the Galaxy S III.
Yes the Note II has USG OTG
I currently own a Note II and and like it very much. If the Note III turns out to be much better than the note II in certain ways, I'll be getting the Note III too.
Here are some features that are expected to be improved in the Note III.
1. Better resolution screen, maybe 1080P
2. Better camera, maybe 13MP
3. Better and faster processor, likely the Exynos octa
4. Hopefully they make a 64GB and 128GB internal storage options available.
5. I'm also hoping they will redesign it and make it look more premium
6. Expect updates in the software department with a lot of improvement on the current features and addition of new features
7. Hopefully much better batter life (the Note II currently has the best battery life of any smartphone I know of except the Razr Maxx)
As to when it will be released, not one really knows for now. I imagine if not delays ensue, it should be released any time from the 2nd to the 3rd quarter of this year.
If you play the "wait for the next model" game, you will never buy a new phone.
Get the Note 2.. You will not be disappointed..
The note 2 is one of the best devices you can get right now in terms of screen size, CPU/GPU speeds, Innovative and usefull features an functions like the Spen and its apps..
Get the Note 2 now and sell it when the Note 3 is released that's if its worth upgrading when the Note3 comes out < Thats what I'm going to do... Plus high end Samsung devices hold there price well

This and also, I've read somewhere (sadly don't remember where) that there wouldn't be much differences between the note 2 and 3, slightly larger screen size and a few minor improvements but nothing big really. At least nothing that will render your note 2 obsolete.
Two rumoured release dates for killer Note III
I’ve read two lines of rumours for the Note III release date: one would be the expected release time about 12 months or less after the release of the Note II. The release date is likely to be announced at the Berlin IFA in September.
The other line of rumour, which I even read late in 2012 is that Samsung was pushing the Note III release date early in 2013. IBTimes.com has this to say today “Samsung recently tweeted that the Galaxy Note 3 official release date will occur during the annual Mobile World Congress this February 24 through 28 in Barcelona, Spain.”
I would wait until that event is over to make your decision. I am (and S IV memory size as a predictor).
I’m personally waiting for a 64 Gb or 128 Gb internal memory model. If the Note II had that, I would have bought it already. If the Note III still doesn’t have decent memory, I’ll may buy a cheap 6’’ quad core Chinese knockoff for around $250 and wait for the Note IV. I’ve read sad rumours that Samsung is going to stick to the current 16 Gb or 32 Gb memory sizes for the S IV and Note III. This is surprising because Samsung produced new 64 Gb and 128 Gb chips late last year. (I’ve read the 64 Gb Note II sold briefly in Korea had technical problems, it didn’t sell well too for poor Koreans).
The Note III is rumoured to have a 6.3’’ screen, two quad cores for performance & considerable battery saving, and a bigger battery anyhow. Samsung also have stated the S IV and Note III will have the best camera ever on a phone. It’s a big chunk, that wasn’t ready for the S III and Note II. The Note III will be a killer – if it has big memory. Yes it will be worth waiting for.
Wait if you not in a hurry. Else get Note 2 now.
Same here, buy now---think later.

It all depends on whether you can hold on to a device even after a new and better version of it comes out. If you really like the Note 2 just get it. The Note 3 will be amazing mostly... and all of us will be tempted but not all of us can shift devices. Technology is so advanced when the Note 3 comes out, and after 3-4 months of using it, there will be rumors of a Note 4 or maybe even better.
Personally I am going to stick with the Note 2 for a very long time. The perfect device at the moment - for my needs atleast.

Bought note 2 two months ago and I never looked back since then. Best buy I made so far regarding cell phones. I'd suggest u buy something when u need it. Postponing purchase based on whats coming wont make u happy really for in the end of the day even if note 3 comes out tomorrow u will still argue with urself if u should wait for the next note 4 and so on. And again u will know that all u have will be maybe less than 8 to 12 months before the even newer model comes out. Meantime while u will be in anguish of what to do and when to buy, which model, those of us who are lucky enough to have this brilliant smartphone will be happy owners and feel joy with our device.
Best regards.

Every day you wait arguing with yourself whether to get it or wait, you are losing its novelty. Get the Note 2, and use it enjoy it and you can even wait for the Note 3 while you're at it.

Well, the thread title says all.
I'm not a developer and don't know if will be easy or not.
I ask for the experts, it will be easy for we get Note2 updates from the Note 3 or it is a different hardware and cannot be used the software from it?
Thanks
No, the update isn't from anther model, it's from Samsung,I mean, if Samsung want give it for us, it will be very very quickly, but Samsung do not want, because if note 2 get 4.3 too quickly, some people well not to but the new one. All about marketing.

The device it is the easiest to port from is the Note 8.0 I think. They are very similar. Almost identical.
Though its still hard..
why is mod locking up all Note 3 threads?
Because they don't have anything to do with the Note 2, what is also considered as "off-topic" in a section dedicated to the Note 2.
To OP. Why do you bother even think about this?! As soon as Note 3 comes out you'll get an update. These threads will get locked soon.

Note 3 have nothing to do with Note 2? What?
Note 2 has several variants but none of their roms can be ported/flashed to either device..so Note3 rom will no way be ported to Note2
Also Note2 will get update after months of launching note3(because of their marketing policy-no need to explain)

I think that my next phone will not be a Samsung. When i bought i choose it because Samsung said Note 2 was getting all the updates till Android 5.0, so i thought that they have good update policy (my previous phone was a motorola defy, and same thing there, no updates).
And about the "As soon as Note 3 comes out you'll get an update" citation, i think your wrong. Samsung is pushing everyone to buy a new device and not to make a good update policy for old devices

Oh, c'mon. Of course they wan't you to buy their newest device!! That's business 101!! What do you complain about? For companies doing marketing?! And we don't even need to discuss wether the Note 2 will get future updates or not. Given that even the S2 will get (or got?) 4.2.2 (delivered with 2.3 and got updated to 2.3.6>4.0>4.0.4>4.1.1>4.1.2) that's 6 updates including 4.2.2!!! Evene if it'll be late, im pretty sure it'll come.
what's wrong with buying new phone? You're getting both a hardware and software update.

ancient galaxy s i9000(s1) has more 4.3 custom ROMs than our note 2

I was saying that when JB 4.3 can be ported in old galaxy s with limited hardware and RAM then we can expect 4.3 for our note 2
It's called software optimization. ..
Not easy. .
And the note 3 is getting new s pen features in 4.3. . So Samsung does not want to release those features to note 2 before note 3 is launched.. plain simple. .just got to wait .

Back in the fall, I think it was expected we'd get it in February. Any new word?
My guessing is somewhere this year. I own a tab s and reports from sammobile say that the Tab s gets it somewhere in the spring. Im not sure about the tab pros though
Any such predictions are pure speculation and are pointless. Make up what ever date you want. It will be no more or less accurate than any other random XDA member.
Today samsung show lollipop on galaxy tab s (8.4 and 10.1) running 5.0.2 . So we know know the modification of touchwiz for lollipop tablets its almost finished . I suppouse it was easier to bring lollipop for smartphones and also tjey are their most important product so its easy to see why tjey wanted to update them before tablets.

Personally I can't see any Lollipop 5.0 version coming to the Tab Pro soon, Samsung have been rolling out T320XXU1BNI1 for 6 months now which is 4.4.2 update.
As this is still being rolled out then this will delay any 5.0 version coming to the Tab Pro, why spend time and resources rolling out an update to 4.4.2 if you intended to roll out 5.0.
Be nice if 5.0 did come to the Tab Pro but if it is, don't think its going to be very soon if at all.

I probably read similar articles as you but I think that they tended to say Note Pro, Tab S and Galaxy Note 2014, as getting it but any other Tabs are unlikely, whatever does happen is out of our control anyway all we can do is wait and see what Samsung do.
if we dont get official we can hope someone port those lollipop roms to tabs pro (like it was done to give touchwiz kitkat to the s3 or lollipop to the s4 using a note 3 rom)
spoke with Samsung rep..
I spoke with a Samsung tech 2 weeks ago and she told me the Tab S will be getting the upgrade in the spring an tab pro was not on the update list yet...but probably would get it..

Can anyone here say they're really surprised?...
Not surprised at all, guess it's time to get a GN5 or a GS6. :good:
Figures.
Well, unless Sammy puts the micro SD slot back in the Note devices I'll be jumping ship.
Not surprised, but sad! Maybe its time to try the Motorola X pure 2015 edition or the Nexus 6P.
Honestly, it would be nice to have, but this phone is now a full two years old. I think it's time we stop expecting Samsung to spend time upgrading us to the latest version of Android. They upgraded us to Lollipop, which I think they had some obligation to do, but I don't think we can expect them to keep doing so indefinitely.
As for my Note 3, It has started to show its age. I think I will be retiring it in the next few months. I have no idea what phone I'll get next. Maybe the iPhone 6.
LOL j/k.
I'd be happy with a damn 5.1 update to address the memory leak. It's insulting to stop updating on such a crappy revision.
As long as other snapdragons 800 keep getting updates I dont see any problem.
Paranoid, AOKP, Cyanogen, Slim, OmniROM, Dirty Unicorns, Darklord's ports! Who need Samsung? N3 is 2 years old, but it's still a beast.

I guess I'm not surprised, but I am very disappointed. The industry is really bad right now. I mean you only support one year of releases? The current Note 5, and last years Note 4? Sad. With how good phone have been in the last three or even four years they are more than capable to support a new OS. The Note 3 is still a powerhouse, and will probably be so for another three years at least. I'm thankful for the dev community, so at least we can still get the latest OS/ROMs with custom ones.
There is to be a grain of salt taken with this info, but...
http://www.justaboutphones.com/galaxy-s5-alpha-note-3-s4-android-5-1-1-lollipop-update/
According to the image, the 5.1.1 update is in testing for the Note 3 and will be finished sometime in November. I realize we won't get Marshmallow (which is fine with me, even though the Note 3 is more than capable of running it.) I'm just glad (hopeful, more like it) that we'll (maybe) get the 5.1.1 update. Once that gets old and the phone is truly non-supported, then I'll consider rooting and installing a custom rom on this unit.
Fingers crossed!
It pisses me off, is what it does, no 5.1.1 yet for this high $$$ device, its all about the damn money. I am not phone hopping any longer. My wife still has the device, and I can do nothing with it.....sad is what it is......

I just upgraded to the Note 4 for far less than $800 dollars. You don't have to get the newest released device in order to upgrade. And the Note 4 will get Marshmallow.

The note 4 will get marshmallow when android "N" is on the corner. So why spend money to upgrade from note 3 to note 4 if both of them are not getting upgraded to the latest android before android N is released (quater 2 or quarter 3 2016), when there would be a new wave of devices? Only newest samsung device can get upgrade in a timely manner.
So for those who are desperate for newest version of android, either get a nexus phone or upgrade to the newest device every year. Otherwise just stick with the old phone for two or three years and then buy the newest phone.

That's not really true. T-Mobile released the Lollipop update for the Note 3 only 6 months after it was announced by Google. And don't forget that the T-Mobile Note 3 got the Lollipop update before the Note 4 did. That's pretty damn good in terms of supporting older devices. And I totally expect the Marshmallow update for the Note 4 to be in the same time frame.
So I'd rather pay $400 every two years and have at least one upgrade to the most recent Android version, rather than wait three years and pay $800 to get the same version and then have the same problem of waiting three years again for the Android update cycle and the manufacturer phone release cycle to line up again.

Option 1(your option): upgrade from note 3 to note 4 and paying $400, you get a note 4 which can get the last upgrade to marshmallow around April, then become outdatrd again in September, you can enjoy 4 or 5 months of latest android. Marshmallow will be the last update for note 4, just like lollipop is the last update for note 3.
Option 2: hold the note 3, then next year around April, you can upgrade to note 5 for about $400, which will have marshmallow already. So for the same $400, you get a better phone which can be upgraded to android N in 2017.
Which option is better? Clearly, no point to upgrade from note 3 to note 4 at this time, Nov 2015.

Again, assuming that there is a similar upgrade cycle for the Note 5 as there was for the Note 3 vs the Note 4, the Note 4 will get Marshmallow before the Note 5. In addition, the Note 5 won't be $400 in April. That would still be 6 months from the release of the Note 6, so it would be around $600. So you pay $600 for a Note 5 when for 6 months and $200 more you can get the Newer release? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense now, does it?
In any case, the point is that people in this thread are complaining about not getting Marshmallow on the Note 3. Well, if you want Marshmallow, then you have to upgrade. You're going to have to do it eventually. That's why I would rather upgrade now, and get a better performing phone in addition to the comfort of knowing that I will in fact get Marshmallow. Or people can wait and keep whining about what they already know they aren't going to get.
Since Note 7 already dead,so note 4 deserves the Nougat.
I think Samsung should do that, except if Samsung want to kill note series.
I hope getting it officially from Samsung or unofficially from devs.
If there's a ROM already available let me know.

I was terribly disappointed by the debacle of the Galaxy note 7 as I was due for an upgrade this October and there is no other phone I would even consider (and the Note 5 is unacceptable with its lack of microSD card support). Thankfully, Samsung has already announced they will release a Note 8 next year but I doubt we will see any further attempt to get the Note 7 back on the market., so it will be a long wait for the next truly big thing from Samsung. They announced previously that the Note 4 had reached the end of its support lifespan but I do hope to see an exception made due to the debacle that was the Note 7. Perhaps some of the Grace UX from the Note 7 will find its way to our Note 4s along with Nougat. Here's hoping.
The Note 4 is already officially at EOL for Samsung. They have moved on, though I'm 100% sure we will see Nougat unofficially from the awesome developers here on the XDA forums! They have already tested and got Nougat to work on the Verizon Note 4. So its only time that us Sprint users will get to use beautiful nougat!
There probably won't be a Nougat update from Samsung, but there is a Nougat AOSP ROM in the works!
