Need help regarding SD EXT - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i've partitioned the card and stuff, am S-Off and on mildwild, i wanted to ask that does removing the battery corrupt apps? i was running vj's 4.1.2 rom and when i removed the battery and reinsterted it, it caused all the apps to malfunction, they were kinda greyed out, what's the theory of this?

Hard to know the exact 'theory', also depends on what you were doing when you removed the battery. Things just get corrupted sometimes, was it all your user apps?
On your previous thread you stated you used gparted to partition the sd card, so this shouldnt have caused any issues as long it was just a FAT32 and ext4 partition, no swap.
Anyway, try not to remove the battery unless there's no other option..

Probably wrong installation caused a misunderstanding between the phisical memory and mounting point for the OS. Another possibility is that the OS change, by a fail, the name of the SD card.
Try to no retire the battery unless it's completely necessary

thank you guys, yes, i partitioned using 4ext this time, and i had to remove the battery to change my sim card, it corrupted all the apps, the ones which i installed myself like outlook, whatsapp and stuff, the ones in the phone's system were ok

As in you pulled the battery while the phone was on, just to change SIM?
Next time power off the phone properly before you do this (hold down power, select power off). If you did that probably wouldn't have caused any issues..

Thanks for replying dude...I did turn off the phone before removing the sim card. I think it's just a faulty rom... can you suggest me a stable, fast daily driver ics rom? Tired of being on gingerbread now... need a fast and smooth ics rom that is stable, ics everything working and can be used as a daily driver

Not sure you can conclude it was definitely the ROM unless lots of other people have the same issue on reboot, but still does sound strange.
Never used an ICS ROM myself, though I don't think it ever reached fully 'stable' as development shifted more towards JB. People still swear by whichever ROM they settle on to be honest: what is "fast, stable, smooth, daily driver" requirements differ between people.
I'm still on GB ROM personally. Don't think all JB ROMs will have the same problem as you, and like I said may not have been due to your ROM. Read a few of the threads and try a few, is always the best way to find out yourself. Sorry can't give actual experience.

ALL AOSP Roms FAIL, Help

I don't post here often, but I am on IRC all the time for those of you that do know me. I have been having serious issues with the AOSP Roms. Cyanogen, Ruby, and Incredible Does all either freeze on me or reboot sooner or later. I've went so far as to install nothing else except the Rom and it still freezes or reboots. I've done this test with all three, I even dialed down the processor while on them and still NO DICE. I'm not an Android expert, but I do have a bachelor's in IT so I feel I'm pretty tech savvy. I was told on IRC that others are having similar problems with all the AOSP roms. I'm trying to get a consensus of who else is experiencing this and some more suggestions on how to fix this.
I appreciate all the help
~Thanks , AnthonyKash
Yeah this is very odd. A couple of us in ##incredibleroms have been working with AnthonyKash to figure this out. So far we have had no luck at all. No Sense UI ROMs do this to him, it seems like it's only vanilla ROMs. Very strange............

I know you posted this months ago but was wondering if you figured out what is causing this? I too can't use ANY aosp Rome because they all end up being unusable after a couple of hours. It's almost like the CPU slows down to a dramatic crawl. Only way to fix is to do a battery pull to reset. I have cleared cache, dalvik, uninstalled setcpu, all with no luck. Anyone have any insights?
Check integrity and space of SD card - maybe even remove, copy contents to PC, reformat to FAT32, copy a few nandroids back to SD and reinstall in device. Also make sure there is ample space on SD.
Absent that, have you tried a different SD card? AOSP ROMs interface w/ the SD considerably more than Sense ROMs.
Also, check radio version - recommend at least 2.15.xx
HBOOT version may come into play as well.
+1 to the above post. Seems like some sense files are bring left somewhere.

I don't think its my SD Card, I just got a new one a month ago and the same thing happened with my old SD Card. I have 4 gigs left empty of a 16 gig sd card. Would it make a difference if I installed from EMMC using RA recovery?
Hboot 0.92
Radio 2.15.00.09.01
Am on the latest versions of Hboot and radio right?
One thing I do find very weird is that even after doing full wipes of user data, cache and dalvik, when I boot up on CM7 my wifi settings still work. I would have expected I needed to reenter all of those settings. Or does this stuff get saved to the SD or internal storage...normal? If it is not, then why are data wipes in Recovery not cleanning up my files?
I've not had this problem.

Yep, those are the latest versions.
AOSP ROMs offer automatic reinstall of apps and data to Google when flashing, if that option is checked when flashed. That's where/how/why settings and/or apps still appear as before.
So, if Sense ROMs are not wonky, maybe it is an app you have installed on the AOSP ROM?
Long diagnostic road, (well understood by us IT folk ) but perhaps uninstall apps in reverse install date order of the app, reboot as you go thru, see which one may have been a culprit.
Absent that, perhaps factory reset in recovery, install an AOSP rom w/out choosing to reinstall apps.
Maybe try another different AOSP ROM?
I know the SD interacts quite a bit more with the SD compared to Sense ROMs - again, maybe copy SD card contents to PC, reformat SD to FAT32 either on the PC or in phone, maybe both - then d/l an AOSP ROM on a clean SD, see if it's still wonky.

Sense ROMS work great, its AOSP roms that are giving my phone fits lol. Well last night I tried something new.
-I changed my radio from 2.15.00.09.01 to 2.15.00.07.28 Official Froyo radio.
-Installed CM7 #14 from the EMMC versus SD CARD.
-"Hit Wipe All" in recovery about 10 times in a row before I flashed CM7
I hope changing the radio to "official" is what does it. Anyone running AOSP roms using the leaked radio 2.15.00.09.01 ?
Radio?
Yes, do let us know whether the xx.09 radio was the (a) culprit.
I run the older 2.15.xx.07.28 one, never had issues w/ AOSP ROMs.
I had an issue with this using cm7 nightlies, and I WOULD post it there but the new, ~totally awesome~ rule they are implementing (can't post in the dev forum w/ less than 10 posts) prevents me from doing that (Which means I have to spam the other sub forums?).
ANYWAYS, I got a bigger sd card from a friend, and I went to erase it under the sd card settings. Then i got a low space notification, saying I had 9 mb free of 7 Terbytes. Rebooting the phone caused it to go into boot loop. If your situation sounds like mine then do this
Boot into CWM, and from there you can mount the SD card and format it, as well as copy any backups.
I did not have any luck with restoring the phone to a previous AOSP rom, even after wiping the cache/dalvik. Maybe there's another one that could be wiped that I didn't do. Anyways, I installed a Sense based rom, and from there I was able to install Cyanogen mod.
Good luck.

Well it turns out that the radio version I was using was not the issue because the phone became unresponsive this morning when I tried to wake it up. To be specific, it does allow me to swipe to unlock but painfully in slow motion.
So that rules at the radio...which leaves me with its either the ROM/Kernel or some rogue app.
So this morning I wiped all user data in recovery and reinstalled CM7#14 but this time I did not log on to my google account during setup and have not installed any apps. So far no issues, but the true test is trying to wake the phone up tomorrow in the morning. If there are no issues, then that solves it (ITS A FREAKING APP).
If it is a rogue app that has been haunting me these past couple of weeks then who has the best way to identify which one is the offender? Why would a rogue app only affect me using AOSP roms and not Sense?
My suspicions are with..(Locale, Beautiful Widgets, ADW EX, Swype, CardioTrainer, Handcent) but I guess process of elimination is what its going to take.
Thanks to all for the help and recommendations.

Good stuff. Glad to see it all finally worked out.

[Q] newbie has rooted, which Rom is best for a newbie ?

Hi all, my first post here, i cant help it but i am nearly 65, bald and retired !.
I treated myself to a Desire last week, un-branded, £10 month with Tescos.
I have been Rooted a few days now, i want to Flash a Rom next, but with so many out there, where do i start ?.
At a guess i do believe i should try CyanogenMOD 7 , but please bear in mind i am completely new to this Smartphone business and i am slow in picking things up, so is "CM7" a bit too much for my grey matter, or am i putting obsticles in the way that dont really exist !
I was very pleased with my faultless rooting, and i have rehearsed the Rom Flashing continuosly using Rom Manager which looks as if it does all the dirty work for me.
If there is a ROM for noobies i havent found it yet !!!!
Tim
You don't have to be a expert to use Cyanogenmod but i would say it's more complicated then something like Leedroid. If you flash the nonA2SD version you have nothing else to worry about, like partitioning your sd card.
One important thing to realize is that Cyanogenmod and Sense rom's are quite different, is there a particulate reason you mention Cyanogenmod? Because if there is you might as well learn how to use it from the beginning.
Also don't forget to make a nandroid (backup in rom manager) before you flash a other rom.

Hi Mr Ghost, i am well pleased somebody replied, CM7 is simply the one that crops up the most. The word Sense, does this by any chance mean HTC Sense ? so if a Rom doesnt have Sense that must mean it doesnt have many or any of the features that make my current ROM more friendly to use.
If CM7 doesnt have SENSE does that mean that the keyboard doent do Landscape mode ?
LEEDROID yeah i could have a go at that one, TA ......... i dont really want to have to partition my SD card, i read about a Goldcard if you partition etc. which doesnt sound v. good.
O yes, i found that Rom Manager Backs Up my original ROM and Wipes, does it ONLY wipe the phones memory ?
thanks for you help
tim
Yes Sense means HTC Sense and you will lose some of the features, but not the landscape keyboard. However i would say HTC Sense makes the android introduction a bit easier and user friendly.
A goldcard is not the same as a card with a ext partition, but as long as you don't run in to space issues there is no need to partition your sd card.
Yes the wipes will only affect the phone memory, the sd card is untouched. Contacts are backed up with gmail but stuff like apps, sms, wireless settings ect is lost unless you back them up yourself. (Titanium backup)

Thanks, so it is LEEDROID for starters thanks buddy, i still dont know what a Goldcard is though, perhaps i dont need to know LOL.
One small problem, LEEDROID isnt available in the list of roms in Rom Manager, i suppose i shall have download it "manually" and get it in the relevant Rom Manager Folder, great sorted i should be able to do that.
I have Titanium Backup Pro as well so its best if i Backup "All user apps" that should be sufficient, yeah ? and itll be no good Backing up ANYTHING ELSE, becuase if restored it would mess up LEEDROID, am i correct with that assumption ?
tim
Yes i would say start with Leedroid.
Best thing is to only back up user apps, i never back up anything else. Most likely it will mess something up.
The goldcard is only needed when using a RUU with branded devices, for normal flashing you don't need one.
Just download the Leedroid noA2SD version and put in on your sd, not in any folder just on the sd. Then in rom manager go to install rom form sd and find the zip file.
Edit: looks like the site went down, here's another link. http://db.tt/FBKcMZD
Thanks for that info pal, youre a star.
I havent seen any mention on this site (although i havent searched for it yet) of the battery not lasting very long, however, off topic i suppose, and you can bollock me for that if you like,:-
for internet on my Desire at home i always use my home WiFi, my off topic question is, does WiFi take more out of the battery than using my Providers GSM/WCDMA connection ? i have hardly made a dent on my Providers Data allowance.
tim
What uses more power depends a bit on how strong your 3g signal is, if it's weak it will probably use more power on mobile data and if it's strong, wifi will use more data but this is no gonne make a significant difference on your battery life.
Usually the battery life gets better after some time, also let your battery drain once until the phone powers itself off and then charge it, while it's off, till it's full. Then use it normally again.
Absolutely brilliant Pal, thanks for sticking with me answering my questions for the last hour or two, it was really good of you thanks.
I will definitely try that with my battery next time it needscharging up, thanks.
I will report back tommorrow whether or not i still have a fully functioning phone, LOL. i feel far more confident about "doing it" now, afterall i'm not likely to be "doing it" with anything else ROFL !!!
tim
phew i had difficulty in locating the file, i eventually found the Leedroid Rom here
http://leedroid.com/bravo-roms
I also saw a "radio" file for the same Rom, dam, i have downloaded the latest version and will put it on my SD card the same place as the Rom file in the ROOT directory.
Until i got an Android Phone, i had only used Windows in all it's various versions, of course in Windows, the word ROOT simply means the Top (or bottom?) of the Folder Tree
but of course the same word can mean several hundred pounds when getting it wrong
PS.. do i need to do anything with this extra feature:-
•Re-added “Mod install location” to No A2SD build•
Tim
Root of the sd means not in a folder.
If you are currently on android 2.2 there is no real need to change radio. If you do change radio make sure you are absolutely sure what you are doing.
And you shouldn't have anything to do regarding the mod installation location.

Thanks for all your help Mr Ghost, i am happily using the Leedroid Rom now, all went smoothly, the battery is still going down preety quickly, i am getting a new battery from HTC any day now, which may perform better than my original ?, but at least i shall have a spare LOL.

Hey, yeah i used the NON A2SD version and i must say it was very easy, i already had the market version of A2SD pro anyway, which works very well, if it causes so much more extra bovver, having to Partition the SD Card !, with the A2SD included in the Rom, why bother ?
What is the advantage, if any, of having this App on a Rom ?

No you misunderstand. To get more storage, there are several methods on android.
You get a froyo rom, which allows moving apps to the sd card. However not all of these apps can be moved over, and it is just the app data that is moved.
Method 2 is rooting and flashing a ROM which supports A2SD / A2SD+. This is very different from the apps to sd found on stock froyo. This allows pretty much all apps to be moved, and also moves things like the devlik cache and so on to the sd. It offers far superior storage to stock. For example on stock froyo with apps moved to sd, I can instal maybe 30 apps before I run out of memory. By contrast, I currently have over 100+ installed with A2SD running GingerVillain custom ROM with 64.9mb internal memory remaining.
I'm not the best at explaining things. Check out this FAQ, should answer all your questions.

Frozen at boot screen (htc) - CronMod 1.05

Issue to resolve: Phone not booting into ROM, stuck at 'htc' screen. Second issue is with Google Play, says "No connection".
Any help on this is highly appreciated!
Short story:
Hello everyone.
After I got my Samsung S3 I decided to play around with my old HTC Desire a little bit. My aim was to install a ROM that would be as plain as possible, visually, so I can play around with it (which I hoped would also maximize battery life) and make it n00b friendly. CronMod seemed the way to go, what with his tweaks and the INT2EXT script etc to maximize app space. Plus didnt want to go to ICS cuz of camera issues.
However, I've been struggling with it. My phone rarely boots up after a shutdown, it just stays at the opening HTC screen and nothing happens. When it does load up into the ROM, on the rare occasion, it'll Reboot fine as many times as I ask. Its just after a shutdown that it doesnt work. Since I want to give this phone to my mom, she, not being very tech savvy, wont have the patience for this. So I need a permanent fix.
The second issue I'm having is with Google Play. It works fine for a little bit but for no reason will stop working. This happened the first time I installed the ROM, then I re-installed and it again having the same issue. I tried "Clear Data" and phone reboot but still no respite.
Phone Details:
CM7r2
6.93.1002
GSM HTC Desire
4EXT recovery.
16GB class10 card: sdcard0 ~13GB, 1.5GB EXT4, 256MB Swap. (also, if someone can explain what Swap is would also help)
Apps2SD script used: Cron's INT2EXT - seemed pretty good.
S-OFF'd and all of course - Revolutionary.io used.
I did try MIUI-Au before this, which was pretty decent, and I may just give up and move on to that if no one has a solution.
Did you changed hboot? i had the same problem when i installed miui on oxygen r2, which wasnt compatible. If you didnt change hboot i think it's the rom, i suggest you flash another one. And about swap..well the point is you dont need a swap partition. It's like another part of ram, when the ram is full the system uses the swap to free it(or something similar, i'm not good on explaining so sry if you dont understand but it's similar).

I changed the HBOOT before I flashed the ROM on. The CM7r2 HBOOT is meant to be compatible with the ROM.
Thanks for the info on Swap, it does make it a lot clearer.
I'll probably wait a bit longer to get some more replies, and if I cant fix the issues then I suppose there's no option but to move to to a new ROM. [I really hope the Devs get the camera issue sorted with ICS roms then I'll jump ship "in a flash". ]
You have given hboot version as 0.93.XXX. A cm7r2 hboot ver should be 6.93.XXX.

Yes, that's correct. It is 6.93.1002.
If it is just stopping at the HTC screen then I am inclined to think it may not be a ROM issue. At this stage you are still in bootloader. Will it even refuse to go to recovery when it starts acting up or for that matter is even fastboot available? If it neither goes to recovery nor can you access fastboot then that means it is hung in bootloader.
But the bootloader should be OK since a corrupt bootloader means brick. You cant boot sometimes like you seem to.
The other reason for bootloader hanging would be I guess overheating or some other hardware fault. Does the device boot up fine after you let it cool down well?

I can get into Recovery fine every time - VolumeDown + Power -> Fastboot -> Recovery.
I cant seem to get into the ROM anymore. It does warm up pretty quickly if I leave trying to boot up but I figured that was because of the screen drawing more power due to constant white screen. What I did find earlier in the day was that if I held down VolDown+Power+Trackball (is that hard reset..?) at that HTC screen it would sometimes restart the phone and then it would load up to the ROM - but its hit and miss. Like right now it just wont work.

Maybe your Desire's partitions are somehow corrupted. Use 4ext to check partition, or do a full wipe, including sdfat32.
I would wipe davlik cache and perform a system wipe/factory reset from recovery then install CM7 as this is pretty plain and can be easily customised. Also you can install S2E from the play store to manage your A2SD with no separate script needed. Hopefully you don't have anything on the phone you need to back up. With any luck this might fix your play store issue too.

@panpjp: I did al that but it still didnt work, unfortunately.
@hans: I've given up on CronMod now. I just went with Marange MIUI. Its working fine so far but the data2ext script doesnt seem to be as smart as the INT2EXT I had installed with the CronMod. At least its working ok. The other issue with it is the Video Recorder - it's very jerky, so the videos do have a lot of stutter, as I had suspected/speculated. Oh well, hopefully an update will fix that.

I have come across this issue once with 1 out of the 4 desires I have personally installed my rom on. Change the kernel to cronmodkernel 1.2 or a kernel of your choice and it will boot and shutdown. I am working hard to find the cause of the issue

I hate to ask this question, since I'm sure you're busy fixing bigger issues, but what exactly is a kernel? I know the ROM is like an OS on a PC but then what is the kernel? How would I install it (is it just the same ol' Recovery --> Install from sd but without any wiping?) and why would it fix the issue with my phone?
Thanks.

The kernel is what runs the OS it is a Linux kernel patched for the arm architecture it contains the drivers as well as it is responsible for booting the phone and also is the layer between the hardware and software.
For a more in depth explaination PM me

To put it simply, it's just a bunch of codes that makes the link between the hardware part and software part.So without it the software part doesnt know how to use the hardware part. And yes you can flash it from recovery and since it's a part of the rom, maybe the rom's kernel it's deffective or something, it's worth to try.

[Q] Ultrabeam Revolutionary Feedback

Hello,
So, a few weeks back I moved to this ROM, the Ultrabeam Revolutionary, after seeing all the positive comments about how fast it runs etc etc.
In a point, they are right. It is one of the fastest, if not the fastest ROM I have ever set on my Wildifre S Phone.
However... Using the link provided in the forum, the ROM after installing and booting for the first time, reads in the settings "Ultrabeam GB V.03
--BETA-- which is really weird, since after double checking the file, this is not the information that it should read.
Apart from that, my phone, at random times, will lockup, start "apologizing" for core application shut down, including and/or viber, whatsapp, gapps. After a reboot, it will work as a charm for a while, until the next random lockup.
As you can understand, this is really annoying, as I do like the ROM a lot, when the phone is up and running. I am really hoping that someone from here can provide me some basic troubleshooting or some instructions on how to fix the above mentioned problems, apart from re-installing the ROM, which has already been done twice.
Thank you very much in advance for all your assistance in this small "issue" that I face.

Is there anything else you have installed, like a Data2SD/INt2EXT/Link2SD script?

This usually happens when you install A LOT of apps on your phone.............Even Data2SD has it's limits of apps on our phones
Try removing some apps you use rarely

But that's the thing.... I have a limited amount of apps that I use on my phone. Since I know of its limited capabilities, I try not to overdo it when it comes to apps. Plus, this is the first time that I encounter this kind of issue. With my previous ROM, I had no such issues.

Then I'll give 2 suggestions
1. Try reflashing the rom, might be something gone wrong at that time
2. Try a different Data2SD script(this would require reflasing the rom)

Hello Everyone, im just trying to install this rom, everything works ok.. but when the phone turn on keep on HTC Logo.. maybe i made a mistake? something about CWM? any help?

To unroot and go on stock or not?

Hello everyone.
I have this device for a long time now. And it's time now to move on.
What I wanted to ask you people is; Should I unroot and go on stock ruu or should I keep my phone like this?
Why I ask this is: I simply can't find a ROM that works without problems.
On KK ROMs I always had freezes and I have to pull out the battery.
On JB ROMs I had random reboots.
On ICS roms I had random reboots.
On GB ROMs it was always something, either freezes, reboots.
The only ROM that was lets say great is MIUI-XJ but, I flashed it yesterday but I mobile data connection doesn't work and I dont know how to fix it.
I will give the phone to my dad and he doesn't need root or anything. Just something stable that works.
Is there a custom ROM that someone of you uses and that has no random reboots/freezes? If so, could you please give me a link to it.
Or if not, should I unroot and go stock? If so, can anyone give me a guide how to do it?
Big thanks!
As a general rule of thumb, GB ROMs for Desire will be more stable. Don't know which particular ROMs you had which rebooted, most I tried were very stable, though it's been a while.
Make sure you set up everything correctly. Most ROMs require an sd-ext partition on the sdcard, should be done with gparted or 4EXT recovery only.
However, if it's now for your dad, and he doesn't really need root or custom ROM or care about any of this, I'd personally recommend the 2.3.3. GB RUU to avoid issues. On a custom ROM, he'll likely come to you for help when / if things go wrong or he doesn't understand some crazy setting
The only caveat with stock ROM is if he needs to install many apps...it will run out of memory very quickly.

Well mate I always made an ext partition via 4EXT recovery. Tried with 512mb, with 1gb but there was always somthing that doesnt work correctly >.<
The last thing I flashed is Mildwild 5.0. The rom is ULTRA but ULTRA fast, but I still had 2 random freezes.
Well tbh, he uses mostly Whatsapp. And calls ofcourse. So that with apps wont be a big problem. I might install ebay, skype and maybe one or two more apps. So I think there wont be a big problem with memory.
But still, I'd like to keep the phone rooted because its easier to fix something on a rooted phone, atleast for me.
Any tips what else should I try? Preferably GB or ICS rom. I still find those two most stable and fastest.
Although I've tried with zillion of roms, maybe I have missed one. Doesnt matter how old the rom is, I just wanna something that works and thats 2.3+.
Thanks

Good, so the partition itself was never the problem, as long as it wasn't anything bigger than ~2GB. 512MB or 1GB wouldn't have made any difference, only that 512MB would be a lot more limiting for app space.
I used that ROM myself, maybe a rare random reboot, but don't think I ever had a complete freeze. No way of knowing the cause without a logcat, or knowledge of any apps, kernel, radio version, or other mods.

I'd still start him out with stock ROM and see if it suits him first. Let him test it for a few days with his setup. At least it will be stable. To be honest I've also tried rooting other people's phones, in a lot of cases they don't really care about anything but the main apps. There shouldn't really be anything for you to fix on stock if all he uses is whatsapp
If you have tried that many ROMs there's something with your setup which is clashing somewhere. May even be the sdcard itself, don't know. Most GB ROMs especially were/are rock solid. Don't know what else to suggest apart from CM, oxygen, redux based ones + compatible A2SD method for apps space.

Aight thanks mate. I will still try few more ROMs, maybe I've missed a GB one somewhere.
But yeah, if I decide to go stock, should I do it via PB99IMG or via pc? And, which stock version should I get? Im from Europe, device bought in Croatia.
Cheers!

RUU can run by whichever method works, doesn't really matter. Personally I like the PB99IMG method in this situation as it's a big file to flash, and does not rely on usb cable or computer drivers etc. Use the 2.3.3 GB RUU, doesn't requite a goldcard
